I have an ELP CD boot entitled "Smashing the Piano" which was recorded circa 1978 w/o the orchestra. They do Fanfare and The Enemy God, among others. The quality is superb, almost as good as Welcome back... This is the only ELP CD boot I've ever seen but I know that several taped bootlegs exist... -Mike ------------------------------ Return-Path: teradyne!rogoff@ism.isc.com Date: Fri, 15 Nov 91 14:59:50 PST From: teradyne!rogoff@ism.isc.com (David Rogoff) Subject: Piano Concerto music In a message a few weeks ago lmt@loral.cts.com (Larry Taylor) posted a list of ELP sheet music. He gave The Music Store as a supplier of the Piano Concerto. I got the phone number (1-215-527-4242) from information and ordered the music by Visa over the phone. It was about $20 with shipping. It's hand written and only the piano part (lots of measures with rests where the piano isn't playing). I haven't tried (not that I could play most of it if I tried) most of it, but it seems accurate. It also had Christmas songs by McCartney, Elton John, etc, about 18 teacks. I want to know if this is the single version of I Believe in Father Christmas - different than what is on Works Volume II. Does anybody have this CD? I have a similar UK CD, that has many of the same tracks, so the main reason for me to buy it would be for the single version of Father Christmas. -Andy ------------------------------ Return-Path: amix@gvlf6.GVL.Unisys.COM Date: Wed, 27 Nov 91 09:58:17 EST From: amix@gvlf6.GVL.Unisys.COM The new ICE Newsletter mentions a revised Emerson Lake and Powell CD that contains two bonus tracks - "The Loco-Motion" and "Vacant Possession". The tracks were listed on the inlay card and back panel and printed on the CD, but the tracks were not on the CD. ICE contacted PolyGram, and their representative said people could exchange their CD - only if it listed the bonus tracks - by sending the disc AND jewel box to Bill Levenson c/o PolyGram, 825 Eighth Ave., New York NY 10019. -Andy ------------------------------ Return-Path: amix@gvlf6.GVL.Unisys.COM Date: Wed, 27 Nov 91 14:42:38 EST From: amix@gvlf6.GVL.Unisys.COM (Andy Mix) Can I answer my own question? I went to the CD store today, and I saw that Christmas CD with Lake's I Believe in Father Christmas. I think it's called It's Christmas. The store owner had a copy of his own open and he played it for me. The version on this CD is the one with the orchestra. If memory serves, this is the single version that is different than the one on Works Volume II. -Andy ------------------------------ Return-Path: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: ELP Japanese Laser Disc... Date: Wed, 27 Nov 91 15:39:47 EST From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com re: the EL&P laser disc I mentioned in the last digest... I was able to get a copy of the laserdisc. It is called `EL&P: Pictures at an Exhibition'... The Good News ------------- Unlike the various American videotape and laserdisc versions I've seen, this version actually has the entire 92 minute concert that was originally released in theaters under various names. (I recall seeing it in the mid-70s as `Emerson, Lake & Palmer Live'. Others have referred to it as `Rock and Roll Your Eyes'.) This means that you get: The Barbarian Pictures at an Exhibition Take a Pebble (The improv in the middle bit includes your typical Keith piano solo that evolved over the years. At this point in the ELP career (only Pictures and EL&P had been released when this was filmed, I think), the solo includes the usual blues jam but also includes some parts of the beginning of Tarkus done in the context of the piano solo! Great stuff.) Knife Edge (The end of this devolves into `Rondo' from the Nice days including the expected stabbing of the old Hammond.) I have the 42 minute American LaserDisc that's called about the same thing. This version is much better (twice the music) though `Pictures' is the same. The Bad News ------------ You still have to live with the bizarre 1970s video effects. (I wish this was a straght concert film without the effects but I'd rather have it in this condition than not have it at all.) Those of you who have seen the Pictures part will recognize this complaint. Luckily, most of the really awful effects are on the Pictures part so the additional minutes of music you get with the import version are better. I got this from a place in Boston (West Street, I think) called Laser Craze. Being a Japanese import disc, it cost $58US (ouch!). But, I think it's worth it. (Though I may be selling my US disc to help defray the cost.) - John - ------------------------------ Return-Path: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: ELP discography in progress... Date: Wed, 27 Nov 91 15:51:07 EST From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Mike Borella (borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu) is working on an ELP discography. I've seen a draft of this and it's coming along nicely. Rather than just a list of albums, it's got details about track names, timing, etc. The draft is ~40k characters and I think that might be a bit bigger than people expect from the digest. Feel free to contact Mike for a copy. Once Mike thinks it's pretty complete, we can try to find an ftp-able location where people can get it off the net. Till then, I hope Mike doesn't mind the publicity here. Mike and I will keep the Digest informed as it is updated and if we find an ftp site for it. - John - ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest *****************
