It was at a show and therefore overpriced, so I didn't buy it. :-) (some dealers think they can pass off junk for $25-$50 just because someone famous was on it when you can usually find the stuff in a cutout bin for $2.) Supposedly the album's "different" (i.e.: sounds nothing like ELP) and "not that good". Whatever. I was wondering if anybody on the list has heard of it. BTW, a new Asia "Live in Moscow" CD is out, featuring tracks recorded on the last tour. Beside the usual there are a few rarities including "Kari-anne" and a couple of Crimson tunes. This is another one I haven't heard yet. The only thing I know is that it's a Japanese import, which means I'll wait til someone else gets it! :-) - -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Return-Path: borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu Date: Fri, 20 Dec 91 14:56:23 PST From: borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu (Mike Borella) Message-Id: <9112202256.AA26528@toadflax.cs.ucdavis.edu> To: elp@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: Fanzine for the Common Man I received an issue of David Teravolarro's (sp?) Fanzine for the Common Man the other day. I wasn't expecting much more than a small group of die-hard fans fawning over their favorite group, but I was pleasantly surprised. The mag was a decent mix of news, reviews, commentary and tidbits of info packed in between photos. Not bad at all. It's a good job for a low budget production and it shows that David really knows about ELP. Some of the news included word on the new album. There ARE recording right now and it might be out as early as March. They're also looking to tour, but nothing is set as of now. But at least a new album has been confirmed. Along with the magazine I ordered the Keith Emerson Rarities tape. For $5 it's not bad but some of the tracks are poorly recorded and the overall quality is low. It's interesting to hear some of the strange stuff Keith has done over the years but none of it is really fantastic. - -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Return-Path: claris!qm!Scott_Lindsey@decwrl.dec.com From: Scott Lindsey To: elp Date: Fri, Dec 20, 1991 5:28:19 PM PDT Subject: ELP Reunion Subject-> ELP Reunion > A word from the digest moderator: > ! > I'm hoping that 1992 finds you all happy and healthy. I'm also hoping > that 1992 really is the rumoered year in which an ELP reunion album will > be out. Is it too much to ask for a tour, too? I just heard on the radio (right after having heard "From the Begining", "I Believe in Father Chrismas", and "Karnevil 9 (1st Impression) [pts 1 & 2]" that ELP has re-formed (again) with the original line-up, with an album due out in May. One would expect that if they *do* put out an album a tour would surely follow. I mean, ELPowell and 3 both toured... - -- Scott Lindsey ------------------------------ Return-Path: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca Subject: It's official! To: elp@xero.cbm.dec.com Date: Fri, 20 Dec 91 21:21:17 EST X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL11] I was speaking to some people at Polygram today, and they confirmed that the new ELP album "No Surrender" will be released in February on their subsidiary label "Victory" (same label as Tin Machine). I don't know if this is old news, but the beginning of the last digest said "rumours" of a new ELP album, so I guess this makes it official! Somehow, I get the feeling you shouldn't hold your breath on the February release date though... Who knows, maybe Emerson and Lake will have another fight and the daggers might go through Lake's gut instead of an organ... Why are they doing this anyway? Whoops! Sorry, dumb question, money of course. No actually.. they're doing it for artistic purposes only... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Right.... It's probably gonna be AWFUL...... we can always hope it won't be though. ======================================================== Anil Prasad || Progressive rock is alive wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca || and well -- and living in Ottawa, Canada || Claremont, California. ======================================================== ------------------------------ Return-Path: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: Re: Carl in PM (and Asia) Date: Mon, 30 Dec 91 09:57:44 -0500 From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com X-Mts: smtp My brother and I have the PM album. I think we listened to it a fwe times and, since then, it's been in the collection as a `collectable'. For the diehard fan, I guess it was worth buying at regular prices. In my opinion, it is not that memorable and is not worth $25. As I recall, most of the band was from Germany though I'll try to dig out the album and report on the band members, songs, etc. - - John - ------------------------------ Return-Path: BORY@CORNELLA.cit.cornell.edu Date: Tue, 31 Dec 91 13:41:58 EST From: "Jeffrey T. Anbinder" Subject: Rarities search To: "Emerson, Lake and Palmer Discussion" I produce (and host) a local radio show here in Ithaca called "Rock and Roll Family Tree," on WVBR. The show has a chronological/genealogical format, in which I trace an individual artist through all of the "groups" he's been involved with. I already did a show on Keith Emerson a couple of months ago, covering his time with The Nice as well as ELP, ELPowell and 3. I've got a show on Greg Lake coming up soon, and one on Carl Palmer a few months after that. While WVBR's music collection is second in New York State only to WNEW in New York City, The Gods (with Greg Lake) and Atomic Rooster (with Carl Palmer) are not to be found within. I'd like to track down vinyl copies (not cassette), or if possible (yeah, right), CD copies of any albums or singles by these two bands. If anybody can help me out, please e-mail me. - -- Jeffrey "BJ" Anbinder bory@cornella.cit.cornell.edu The Sexiest Man in Ithaca Radio bory@vax5.cit.cornell.edu "Because I'm Jewish, a lot of people ask why I killed Christ. I picked up a book of art by H. R. Giger this week. For those not familair with the man, he painted the Brain Salad Surgery cover, among other things. The book (can't remember the exact title right now) mentions the fact that Giger did the cover and shows a picture of it. As far as I can tell, there's no other "title" for the painitng. Tangentalizing, if you were stricken by the style of the BSS, here some other works that Giger has done. The classic movie monster of Alien was designed by Giger, as was many of the sets. His dark brooding style fit the movie perfectly, as did his twisted sense of horror. Although Giger had nothing to do with the sequel Aliens, he is currently working on Alien III. Back to album covers; remember back in 1986 when the punk group Dead Kennedys was sued for distributing pornography to minors? This case made major waves and was the beginning of the free speech vs. PMRC battle which is still going on in one form or another. You guessed it: Giger painted the insert "Penis Landscape" which got the band sued. I believe he also worked on a Blondie cover but it never got published; something about Debbie Harry getting pierced with needles turned a lot of people off. There are several large (and very expensive) portifolios of his art available. Giger's Necromonicon and Necromonicon II both come highly recommended. In these you'll see the full details of his art. The textured, shaded colors, torturously complex structures and intertwined bodies are truly a marvel. I wonder how he comes up with these superbly detailed pictures. His style is so dark and unique. BTW, both these portfolios have nothing to do with the legendary Necronomicon - it was just a title that his publishers thought suited his work. As a warning, Giger's art is not for everybody. Many people find it repulsive or perverted. My girlfriend thought it was sick and twisted when she looked at the book, but I find it fascinating. But it's definitely not for the squeamish. Pictures of multilated children and demons involved in sexual acts, not to mention that most of his work is ripe with phallic symbols, is enough to turn the stomach for even the most open minded person. But is you're looking for a glimpse into the life of a true master, I recommend checking the book out. It contains autobiographical information as well as a history of his art and is available here in the US in most book and comics stores. Sorry to get off the subject that much... Anybody know how or why ELP choose GIger to paint the cover? - -Mike Borella borella@cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ End of elp Digest [Volume 2 Issue 1] ************************************
