Subject: Greetings! To: elp-request@xero.cbm.dec.com Hello, I have just recieved my first ELP digest, and I will get right to the point... WHAT E.L.P. REUNION ALBUM????????!!!!!! I am an avid fan, and have been waiting for this for years (A radio station in Pittsburgh said that they would almost certainly tour last summer, open for Yes and other rumors). Is this one finaly true? The last Emerson activity I have heard of was with The Best in 1990. PLEASE get back to me on this so that I may sleep at night! Anyway, I was really excited to hear about this list and I look forward to hearing from other ELP fanatics. I am especially interested in rarities and unreleased items (audio, video, paper, anything!). I have a fairly extensive collection myself, so send me a message if anyone wants to see a list. Also, include a list of your own rarities. Bye for now, Chris Dixon stu891695@gcc.edu ------------------------------ To: "A prisoner held against his will by a computer!" Keyboard magazine has been reporting for the past 3-5 months on progress made for a real all-3-members reunion album. It's going to be out on the Victory label (supposedly the label that Tim Machine (Bowie's new band) is on but I haven't verified this). Allegedly, Victory is distributed by Polygram (the ELPowell label). In fact, there have been reported sightings of a re-release of the ELPowell album with 2 bonus tracks left over from those sessions. I don't have it yet but have seen one copy in a store that definitely had the 2 bonus tracks on the outside box. That's about all I know about it. Should make for an exciting next few months for us ELP fans. I, too, am interested in ELP rarities. A godd way to maybe get some discussion going would be send a message to me for inclusion in the next newsletter emntioning some of your favorite rarities and seeing if we get people to talk about what they've got. Hope this helps you out. Thanks for the message. Glad you like the mailing list. - John Arnold - P.S. Subject: Rarities To: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Hello! John recommended that I start a discussion of rarities by giving a list of what I have and asking others to do the same. Here is a list of some things that I have, but I'm sure there are others I'm overlooking: Video - ----- The Nice - BBC appearance (B/W Rondo, America, Ars - Very Interesting) Pictures at an Exhibition (including 1st album tracks) Belgium - 1971 (One of my favorites - good camera work) Knife Edge Video (Killer version of song - filmed in studio) Tour Doccumentary - 1973 (Some interesting concert footage) Montreal - 1977 (Motion Picture with orchestra - GREAT!) Fanfare for the Common Man Video (Shot outdoors in Montreal) Emerson, Lake, & Powell - 1985 (shot from audience - sound is good) Emerson on David Letterman (supporting ELPowell - plays America) Emerson & Palmer - Atlantic 40th Ann. (Great version of America/Rondo) The Best - Japan 1990 (Emerson, Joe Walsh, John Entwistle, etc.) ....Also bits and pieces of other things Audio (all tapeed copies) - ----- Belgium - 1971 (Same as video, I think) Chicago - 1971 (Tarkus Tour) Tour of the Americas - 1972 (Trilogy tour - Great!) California Jamm (Very poor sound quality) Works 1-1/2 - (Great music, again poor quality) Emerson, Lake, & Powell - 1985 (Radio broadcast) I would be very interested to see other people's similar lists so that I know what's out there. I would be especially interested in knowing if any CD bootlegs exist or if there are any videos of BSS or Trilogy tours somewhere. Please Reply! To: elp@xero.cbm.dec.com Date: Mon, 17 Feb 92 8:21:43 EST I heard that Keith Emerson wrote an apology letter to fans for the "Love Beach" fiasco which was published in Keyboard Magazine sometime in 1980. I checked Keyboard's back issues and there is a Keith Emerson article from this time, but unfortunately it is out- of-print. Does anyone have this particular issue, and could perhaps summarize what Keith said? I've always wondered what the band were thinking when they made that album. I do know that Greg Lake stated they didn't want to do the album, and only did it under contract obligation to Ahmet Ertegun (sp?). The track is "White Noise" and here's what the liner notes say: This tune was originally written in halftime with a funk groove, but didn't really come together until we doubled the speed and rearranged it with some key suggestions from Ronnie Montrose -- one being to start the song off with the middle guitar riff which, as a result injected more adrenaline into the whole song. One night, Keith Emerson of ELP happened to be in a club where we were playing and, upon hearing it, offered to play piano on it. The result is what you hear. My guess is that it was probably a San Jose club, since Kevin Gilbert (who produced it) and Bonilla (who together comprise the band Toy Matinee) are from the area, and Emerson has been known to hang out in the area (it's where he teamed up with Robert Berry to form 3. - -- Scott Lindsey ------------------------------ Return-Path: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com To: Scott Lindsey Cc: elp@xero.cbm.dec.com In-Reply-To: Your message of "Mon, 17 Feb 92 05:13:13 PDT." <00119.2781191205.5934@qm.claris.com> Date: Tue, 18 Feb 92 09:36:17 -0500 Subject: re: New Emerson From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Scott: Thanks for the info about Keith Emerson on the Marc Bonilla album. ("Weaver in >>> the Web that He Made".) Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt on this but, alas, it was not as intentional as you think. As verified in the Tarkus sheet music book that I have, you are correct that the words to `Mass' (in Tarkus) are `the weaver in the web that he made'. I did NOT know these were the words until I found that sheet music book many years ago. I `grew up' (if you can call it that) thinking that the words were `the weaver and the weapon he made.' I must have thought it was some obscure reference to the (Jacquard, I think) looms with `punch card programming' that became an inspiration for the Hollerith code. And that computers were `the weapons' (foreshadowing of Karn Evil 9 3rd impression, perhaps?). Anyway, an over-active imagination and too much listening to Tarkus on poor quality car 8-track tape players leaves me with a confused memory. Since I'm sure someone will ask, the Tarkus book is out-of-print. But I can tell you (in case you begin a search for it) that the cover looks like the album cover so it's pretty recognizable. It was published by Warner Bros. Publications, Inc. and is catalog number VF0752. Given the copyright dates on the sheet music, it looks like it was published in 1980 or 81. Thanks for the correction (and I'm glad to see that someone reads my lyric reference that I try to remember to put at the beginning fo each issue). - - John - ------------------------------ Return-Path: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com To: Gregory (G.R.) Those are the only 3 sheet music books for ELP that I have ever seen or heard of. I consider myself fortunate to have copies of all three since they are very hard to find now. The only other ELP-related music I've seen are: * occasional snippets from pieces that appeared in Keyboard magazine back in the late 70s or 80s. Does anyone have a definitive list of these? I recall an Aaron Copland tribute `Happy Birthday' piece that had Happy Birthday layered on top of part of the Concerto from Works, Vol. 1 and a few others. * There is a dissertation (Doctor of Musical Arts) available that includes some hand transcriptions of small chunks of Keith Emerson's compositions. The dissertation is called `Keith Emerson: The emergence and growth of style. A study of selected works.' written by Blair Pethel. It is available as Order Number 8923915 from University Microfilms International, 300 N. Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48106. Phone numbers are 800-521-0600 or 313-761-4700. I think it costs around $50 but I could be wrong. * Presser Music in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania (I think that's where they are) has a hand-transcription of JUST the piano part from the Concerto on Works, v. 1 available. It's about 25 pages and seems accurate so far. I think it cost around $20. I can get the exact details about address and phone number if you want to buy it. * I've got a book called `Space Rock' from the early 70s that has `Lucky Man' in it but it's a pretty simple arrangement with no added value other than the chords (which aren't that tough to figure out). * `Guitar for the Practicing Musician' had an issue in late 1991 (November 91, December 91, or Jan. 92; all I know is that I bought while I was Christmas shopping in December 91) contained a trascription of `From the Beginning' (well, the guitar part anyway). I haven't gotten around to learning yet so I can't vouch for the accuracy. Date: Tue, 18 Feb 92 11:26:13 -0500 From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com In ELP Digest v2.3, Jason Giles asked about the Keith Emerson Honky CD. Well, I've got it and I'm listening to it on my workstation's CD player now. I'll list the details for that and `The Emerson Collection' below in case anyone wants a comparison (you'll see some similarity). I like them both and have found the quality to be fine. (Though, admittedly, I don't go over my CDs with a finetooth comb looking for mastering problems.). Neither package contains an address of Chord Records though I believe they are a British company based in London, England. Hope you find this useful. - - John - ============= Keith Emerson `Honky' CHORD Records catalog # CD002 no date on package Title Composer Time ----- -------- ---- 1. Green Ice Keith Emerson 6:06 Notes: THIS IS NOT THE NUMBERING/ORDERING AS PRINTED ON THE DISK LABEL. I've done some detective work (see the disk below) to match what's what and think this is a more accurate labelling. Corrections are welcome. On the original `Honky' CD, Bach Before the Mast (a cover tune) and Hello Sailor are labeled as `Hello Sailor includes Bach Before the Mast'. My impression of the correct labelling is listed above though the actual CD label has track 3 labelled as Salt Cay. Track 3 is the conclusion to `Hello Sailor' as well as `Salt Cay.' `Bach Before the Mast' is actually wrapped inside Hello Sailor so the track distinctions given on the label are misleading. Personally, I think Hello Sailor/Bach Before the Mast is a MUST HAVE for Emerson fans! Great piano and great Hammond all in the same cut. `Chic Carni' sounds like an instrumental version of what became `Nighthawking' on the Nighthawks soundtrack (perhaps hidden here on purpose since no offical Nighthawks soundtrack has ever been released on CD to my knowledge). I don't recall this piece being on the original Honky vinyl at all. Could be a rarity. `Intro Juicing' is actually the first minute or less of Big Horn Breakdown. It includes Keith singing snippets from I'll See You In my Dreams and Shine On Harvest Moon and giving a radio promo bite for WAJR, Pittsburgh (real? I don't know) from ``the magic fingers of Keith Emerson on piano.'' You've got to hear it believe it! (Critics of ELP never did seem to notice the band's sense of humor.) `Yancey Special' sounds like it was recorded at about the same time and with the same band as the big band piece on Works, Volume 2. `Jesus Loves Me' is Keith's tribute to the gospel music of the local churches in the Bahamas he encountered when he lived there and includes the words of Reverend Rolle from the Holiness Church of Deliverance and the Kayla Lockhart Singers. The reproduction of the album cover shows a track called `Rum-a-Ting.' I'll have to get my brother to dig out his vinyl version and check it out. Does anyone else know if Rum-A-Ting is actually ON this CD. I don't think it is. My main disappointment in the CD is that the gatefold picture is NOT included in the package. The vinyl version of Honky has a hilarious picture of Keith in a bathtub being `attacked' by a shark. A small sacrifice but it is a great picture. ============= Keith Emerson `The Emerson Collection' CHORD Records catalog # CD Coll 1 date on package indicates 1986 release Title Composer Time ----- -------- ---- 1. Corrections are welcome. Track 2. See comments above (in description of Honky CD). I don't know if `Prelude to Candice' and `Candice' are from soundtracks or not. Does anyone know? `Nighthawks' is the main theme for the film of the same name. `Inferno' and `Mater Tanenbrarum' (that's how it's spelled on the label though I thought it had been referred to as Mater Tanenbaum) are from the Inferno movie, I believe. `Starship' is from the Emerson Christmas Album but I can't recall if it's exectly the same as a track on that or a re-mix/edit. Don't know if `The Dreamer' is from a film soundtrack or not. `Playing for Keeps' features Brad Delp (of Boston and RTZ) as the singer. Don't recall if this was from a film sound track or not. =========== ------------------------------ Return-Path: UTAS@bnr.ca Date: 18 Feb 92 11:49:00 EST To: From: Gregory (G.R.) I have a copy of Keyboard (when it was called Contemporary Keyboard) that has a transcription of Emerson's "Barrelhouse Shakedown". The opening bars of "Eruption" were also quoted in Keyboard at one time or another, before the whole thing was published. I ordered the Piano Concerto a couple of weeks ago but have yet to receive it. The orchestra parts were undoubtedly written down but I guess they were never published. With publishing packages like Coda's Finale now available, I wonder how long it'll be before a lot of stuff with a low volume of projected sales will become profitable. There really isn't much missing from the ELP repertoire. Running through the stuff up to Brain Salad Surgery: The Barbarian (based on Bartok's piano solo "Allegro Barbaro", which I doubt is in the public domain) Knife Edge (based on Janacek's "Sinfonietta", with an excerpt from Bach's "Gigue from French Suite #6" tossed in; again, not likely PD) ** The Three Fates (I would *drool* to see "Lachesis") ** Tank ** The Old Castle (the rest of "Pictures at an Exhibition" ** The Sage is very close to Mussorgsky's piano solo) ** The Curse of Baba Yaga Nutrocker (based on Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite", which is PD) ** Blues Variation Hoedown (based on Copland's piece of the same name; not PD) ** In the Beginning ** the _Trilogy_ piece (I forget its name) that sounds like it belongs on Frank Zappa's _Overnight Sensation_ album ** Abbadon's Bolero (supposedly would need 16 staves, since that's how many parts it had; would be neat to see) Jerusalem (based on Parry's arrangement; not PD, but it would be interesting to see those great "trumpet synth" parts) Toccata (loosely based on Ginestera's "Varaciones Concertantes", a piano concerto with orchestra; not PD) ** Karn Evil 9 (surprising that they never published this) What can be published (**) should fit in one book.
