You see, I'm really thrilled about the idea of another ELP album...to a point. The same question keeps running through my mind: "What if it sucks?" There's a good chance that it will. Why? Well, let's think about the past... What has Keith Emerson done in the last 10 years that's all that spectacular? A few soundtracks (very uninspired) some guest appearances (big deal) and a Christmas album (nice, but it's not Tarkus). Before that he made Honky and Inferno, both good but nowhere near Brain Salad Surgery. Palmer's stint with Asia was disappointing though not outright bad at first. Lake hasn't done much during this period of time (I haven't heard his solo albums). ELPowell was pretty good, but can you compare it to Trilogy? And let's not even talk about 3... Now think of the other dinosaur prog bands, contemporaries if you will. They've had their comebacks and "Unions" but can you compare the newer material to that of the 1970-1975 period? I know not everyone listens to music the same way that I do, but I'm pretty sure a fair share of you do. I like to be challenged. I like to hear something new every time I put the CD on. I like to be able to isolate each instrument, follow how it's played, then merge the sounds together to see how they fit. I like to listen to music that makes me think, "There's no way I'll ever be able to play that!" I can enjoy ELP for that reason. I like every album (except for Love Beach :-]) for that reason. This isn't just talk with me because I very rarely hang on more than a few albums by any specific band; I stick with the ones I like best. To sum things up, I don't want a bunch of lame trash passed off as a reunion album. Most rock-n-roll reunions and "supergroups" have been lame so far. I'm hoping beyond hope that ELP will be different. But I don't think it will. If it isn't obvious, all of the above is IMHO. And on a somewhat related note... Ever wonder what would have happened if Keith had written more than just one Piano Concerto? I really like #1 and it makes me think of what might have been if he'd pursued a classical career in his time off from ELP. Even if he'd just recorded some solo piano, I'd like to hear it. -Mike Borella borella@cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ From: gt0473c@prism.gatech.edu (Chris Giddens) Message-Id: <9203030526.AA03528@prism.gatech.edu> Subject: Rockline...I WAS ON! Here are some quick notes from the show: The album is now scheduled for a May release, and the band will be touring in late July and August. They're mixing it now. Greg will have a song called "Affairs of the Heart." Keith said that he doesn't think we will be disappointed. It has a very live sound, with lots of improvised interaction. He's brought back the Hammond organ, in his most advanced keyboard setup yet. Carl said that they tried to look at it as if they had never stopped playing together. They intend to play only ELPalmer songs on tour together, in an approximately 2-hour concert. The longest song so far on the album is 7 minutes. A couple of hours before the show, a DJ on that station said that the new album is to be called "Unconditional." They didn't play any new songs on the show. They played: Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression Part 2 Lucky Man Hoedown, live, from "Welcome Back..." Stones of Years >From the Beginning an excerpt from "Fanfare..." Still You Turn Me On. Carl said Asia is still working. He said that his first band, when he was 14, was the "King Bees." He started playing drums at 11. Keith said that his main classical influences on the piano and organ were Bach, and the French composers such as Ravel and Debussy. He said that he liked the sound of the new Hammond/Suzuki XB-3 organ, and thanked Suzuki for giving him "a lot of them." He also thanked Korg. Greg said that Atlantic will be releasing a digitally remastered compilation of earlier ELP recordings in July. It wasn't clear whether or not this will be a boxed set. It was announced that ELP will be back on the show in May, and that they will play cuts from the new album then (Those of you who listen to Rockline regularly, please let us know when you hear a date for this!) The trio seemed at ease, amiable, and enthusiastic. I'm certainly more optimistic now that this may be a great album than I was before. - Jim Smith smithj@hpsad.sad.hp.com Yupatupata da yupadupa chickida, Icktang icktang, Ickitack tangdow, Rickitickatar ticka chingtar da. ------------------------------ Return-Path: gcc!gcc.edu!stu891695@vax.cs.pitt.edu Date: Tue, 3 Mar 92 18:56:32 EST From: "A prisoner held against his will by a computer!" Subject: Rock Line, etc. To: elp-request@xero.cbm.dec.com Hello, Well, I'm sure there will be a number of reactions to the ELP Rock Line appearence. Here's just a few thoughts and observations I had while listening to it at about 2 am last night (on tape): 1. Asked, but never answered: Was Trilogy ever played live? Anyone know or have a live recording? [ Which reminds me, I still want your rarities lists! (what you have or know about). If I get enough response, I will compile a list!] 2. When asked if any long songs: only one that approaches 7 minutes?? That's not long by ELP standards...but let's wait and see before I criticize. 3. I was very happy to hear that even with todays technology, Keith has used the old Hammond to great extent on the new album. 4. Will I be able to wait until May for the album and July or August for the tour without going crazy? If anyone wants to volunteer for > these, start discussing them either in `the digest' or amongst yourselves. I volunteer to maintain the list of 'borrowed' pieces that have been used in songs by Emerson, Lake and/or Palmer. To save space, I won't include the full list right now. I'll get the attributed quotes off of the albums that I have. If you know of an unattributed quote that isn't listed below, send me (if you know it) the name of the original piece, the composer, what song and album (or performance) it was quoted in by Emerson, Lake or Palmer, and I'll include it in the list. I'll then publish the complete, formatted list in the digest in a couple of weeks. Here are the UNATTRIBUTED quotes that I currently know of in the format Musical Source - Composer: 3rd Symphony, closing measures of 2nd movement - Aaron Copland, 9th Symphony (NEW WORLD), 4th movement - Antonin Dvorak, In The Hall Of The Mountain King from The Peer Gynt Suite - Edvard Grieg, Norwegian Wood - The Beatles, Turkey In The Straw - trad (?), A Bicycle Built For Two - ?, Theme from Star Wars [ - John Williams, I presume. (mod.)], Lady Madonna - The Beatles, Abbot and Costello Theme - ?, The Birds - Otterino Resphighi, ? - Bernardo Pasquini, Church Windows - Otterino Resphighi, Sinfonietta - Leos Janacek, French Suite #1 (BWV #812) 1st Movement (Allemande) - JS Bach, Blue Rondo a' la Turk - Dave Brubeck, Allegro Barbaro - Bela Bartok, Etude, Opus 10 No. 1 - Frederic Chopin, Fantasia on Greensleeves - Vaughan Williams, Lt. Kije Suite - Serge Prokofiev, Interplay - Bill Evans, The Minotaur - Dick Hyman. I have some specific questions regarding this list: - What was the name of the piano piece that KE "played" at the California Jam while his piano was flying and spinning around? It's a grand piece, with big crashing minor chords going up the keyboard, and is pretty commonly known, but I don't know the name of it. Is it the Funeral March by Chopin, perhaps? - If anyone knows the song "St Thomas" by Sonny Rollins, please contact me. I THINK this is what Emerson is quoting during the leadout of "Salt Cay," because a band played whatever the song is that he quotes during a scene at a wedding reception in the movie "Risky Business," and "St Thomas" was attributed in the credits. But I'm not sure. This list is by no means complete. In particular, I have left out WHERE E,L and/or P used this music, for the sake of conciseness. I've also left out the attributed quotes. This information will be in the complete list. I also have no knowledge of music quoted by Lake or Palmer outside of ELP. If you have any additions or corrections or can add some more information to the listings already given, please contact me. Thank you, - Jim Smith smithj@hpsad.sad.hp.com >> ** The Three Fates (I would *drool* to see "Lachesis") Blair Pethel's Doctoral Thesis has a few measures of "Lachesis" transcribed in it, but not enough to really help you perform it. It also has a fairly detailed analysis of the piece which might help in transcribing efforts. > So, is everyone else hoping for a pompus, bombastic showcase of the >band's tallents on the new album like I am? Here's to overblown 13 >minute instrumentals! YES!!! ELP was never a mass-market band. They had a moderately large, loyal following. Although few of their tracks ever made the charts, their albums sold fairly well. I hope they have kept this in mind. Keith Emerson said that Three had taught him a lesson, not to go for commercial pop. I hope he was able to stick to his guns. >i dont mean to be harsh against the band >but theyll have to update their sound in a 90's way if they want to >make a lot of $, because even elpowell didnt sell all that well. I hope they don't blindly "update their sound." They could certainly take advantage of 90's technology, but I hope they realize that they shouldn't allow their sound to be homogenized the way Yes recently has. Judging from their recent interview on Rockline, it sounds like they realize this. - Jim Smith smithj@hpsad.sad.hp.com Yupatupata da yupadupa chickida, Icktang icktang, Ickitack tangdow, Rickitickatar ticka chingtar da. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1992 14:43 EST From: Rick Meyer Subject: Rockline?
