For those of you who missed the Friday, April 10, 1992 edition of ABC's `In Concert', here's a really brief summary: * New album will be released in May 1992. Title appears to be `Black Moon'. They showed a picture of the cover: It's a blue, sky background with tilted old-fashioned, carousel (or merry-go-round) seeming to be lifting off from the ground. At the top in Old English-type letters appears Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Under that, the title, Black Moon. * ELP's publicist seems to be getting pretty good exposure for the revitalized ELP. Through the ELP Digest, we've heard of mention/interviews (even though some recycled old ones) on RockLine, In the Studion, and In Concert. That's a good sign that someone is trying to get the word out. (Certainly this is better coverage than I call recall ELPowell or 3 getting.) * ELP received about 20 minutes of the 60 minute `In Concert' show. The bulk of this was an artist profile consisting almost entirely of interviews with ELP. Thus, no new music. There was new playing, however. The only new playing was a few minutes of them working through Fanfare for the Common Man. The interviews that comprised almost all of the 20 minutes, however, were all new. Apparently recorded in a rehearsal studio and recorded separately. To give the feel of a conversation, they interspersed cuts from each of the 3 interviews to let the profile be topic-based. There still was a Keith segment, a Greg segment, and a Carl segment, however. * The setup for the playing was typical ELP. Keith off to the left with the usual stacks of keyboards (no GX-1 apparent). When asked how many he'd have on the road, he said he didn't know yet. Carl in the center on a drum riser. Playing a red, double-bass setup with his Remo (a drum head manufacturer) endorsement prominently displayed. Greg off to the Right with an array of bass and acoustic guitars. (Couldn't tell if there was an electric 6-string or not.) During Fanfare, Greg was playing either a Fender Jazz or Precision Bass from the looks of it. In the background during the interviews, there was a prominient display of Mesa Boogie bass amp and Bag End speakers. * Greg claimed that this ELP reunion first started because they'd been offered to do a film score (didn't say for which movie). When they got together, they played and `heard something they hadn't heard in a number of years: the real power of ELP.' This blossomed into the new album (no mention of whether the movie score got punted along the way). Greg claims that he's looking forward to touring even if it's not stadiums, etc. Just wants to give people a chance to enjoy the music. * During the interview parts, most of the old footage came from Brain Salad Surgery-era promotional films. Then there was a bit of Tiger in a Spotlight that, I think, was filmed at the 1977 Montreal Concert (it was dated 1977 anyway). Those clips and the new run-through of Fanfare was about it for the music. In summary, it was good to see ELP getting some exposure in places where people will hear about them. It was especially good to hear each of them talking with some enthusiasm about being back together and playing/writing again. I am hoping the ability of their publicist to get pre-release exposure will be followed up with a push for airplay once the album actually gets released. - John - J.Arnold@bull.com ------------------------------ To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: ELP mentioned in Notes From The Edge #36 Date: Tue, 14 Apr 92 09:09:23 -0400 From: arnold@thira.ma30.bull.com I've attached some articles that were in the Yes Newsletter (Notes from the Edge) related to ELP. If you already subscribe to Notes From the Edge, I apologize for making you wade through this twice. The 2 articles relate to a new Asia album (that has some Palmer presence and a song apparently co-authored by Greg Lake) and a person who would like to see Keith Emerson in Yes, respectively. - ------- Forwarded Message ASIA - AQUA: ============ Date: Tue, 31 Mar 92 22:47:50 CST From: Lewis Beard Track Listing: Aqua Part I (Downes/Payne/Howe) Who Will Stop The Rain (Downes/Warman/Woolfenden) Back In Town (Downes/Payne) Love Under Fire (Downes/Lake) Someday (Downes/Warman) Little Rich Boy (Downes/Payne) The Voice of Reason (Downes/Payne) Lay Down Your Arms (Downes/Payne/Hart) Crime of the Heart (Downes/Warman) A Far Cry (Downes/Payne/Hart/Mitchell) Don't Call Me (Downes/Warman) Heaven On Earth (Payne/Nye) Aqua Part II (Downes/Payne) Musicians: Geoff Downes - Keyboards, backing Vocals John Payne - Vocals, Bass, backing Vocals Carl Palmer - Drums, Percussion Al Pitrelli - Rhythm and Lead Guitars Steve Howe - Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Pedel Steel Guitars, 12 String Electric Guitar, Dobro Simon Phillips - Additional Drums Nigel Glockner - Additional Drums Anthony Glynne - Additional Guitars John Payne - Additional Guitars Time: 60:17 (on my CD readout) Cover Art: *not* Roger Dean, but very Deanish nonetheless; it is of a Dolphin in space, hovering over a space center, with planets in background and such. Analysis: Its a good album, but would be *very* rote, blah and paint-by-the-numbers (IMO) if it were not for Steve Howe. Steve plays on almost all the tracks, just for colour and taste; he does all sorts of neato acoustic things. Some songs are straight ahead pop; some, such as Aqua Part I & Who Will Stop The Rain, are more prog-rock-pop, as the better tunes on the earlier Asia stuff; lots of mood keyboards and downes is all over the album of course; all the other personel other than Payne on Vocals and Howe on 'salvage' ( :) ) are minor; even Carl Palmer's presence is un-noticed. The percussion on the album is not at all intense, and I would guess he only put down some basic tracks before jumping into ELP again. The vocalist is a cross between the GTR vocalist and the 80s Sabbath vocalist, Tony Martin. Kinda pop, but with occasional rough moments! Well, thats all for now! Enjoy! Well first of I must say that it wouldn't really matter if the band was called Yes or not(ABWH was Yes) Bass: This is where I will start because this is where I seem to run into problems. I have heard that Squire is the man with the rights to the name Yes. Levin, however runs rings around Squire and I would much rather see Levin in the next incarnation of the band. I f Levin is in, I guess the name Yes would be out. Vocals: Jon Drums: Alan White is one of the most underrated drummers I have witnessed play. He is great!!! Bill is also fantastic, more technical than Alan but I think that Yes could do without the terrible ego of Bill. Keyboards: Wakeman would definitely be my choice( or Keith Emerson... WELL I CAN DREAM!!!) Guitars:If at all possible I would like to see both Rabin and Howe together on an album. I personally think that Rabin is too Pop-starish. Is stuff is good but , to me, kind of shallow musically. Howe is great and the man that gave Yes their SOUND for so many years. I would be most interested in seeing Wakeman and Rabin work together. About the Nice Everything... album. The trumpeter was Kenny WHEELER. He also appears on the Five Bridges suite. He has gone on to perform with Anthony Braxton, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and others in the free-jazz idiom. It fascinated me to find that this was the guy playing on those amazing Nice records. The ELP segment on In Concert was a disappointment, partly because it was so tantalizing. For a start, the show began nearly an hour later than scheduled (in NY) so I imagine there are quite a few videotapers who are cursing. They asked some very pointless questions, and then edited the interviews to oblivion. The footage was the thing that got me. Cal Jam was represented by the flying piano (unfortunately with voice-overs) They showed that Montreal Fanfare for the Common Man (even less than I've seen in other edited forms) The real killers: Emerson (at home I think) playing the conclusion to the Endless Enigma Fugue (a bit faster than usual) and notating something (not sure yet what) 1977 Works tour Tiger in a Spotlight 1973 Palmer solo 1973 Still You Turn Me On 1973 Lucky Man (with Palmer on tamborine) 1973 Emerson (L100 acrobatics) at the very beginning of the show, they talked over 1973 footage of KE9 imp.1 (part 2) The only new clip was a studio Fanfare for the Common Man that was, well, a letdown after seeing the 1977 version right before. Lake is playing a Fender (or copy) 4 string bass. Emerson has none of the good old good ones (GX-1, Moog modular, Hammond anything, even piano was not to be seen) just a bunch of new-looking synth wonder machines. (the sound he had was close, but not the real GX-1 thing) New album Black Moon to be released in early summer.
