Hi: WNEW FM (102.7) in New York will broadcast the 7/31 ELP show from Waterloo Village, NJ on Thursday, September 3 at 8 p.m. Also, there are two excellent ELP videos out now, Hartford and Jones Beach. Both of these are very well shot and very close. Check the ads in the back of Goldmine and you will see adverts for both. Did anyone tape the ELP concert that was broadcast on WBCN in Boston last week? If so, please email me and perhaps we can arrange a trade. Bye, Damien DeSimone 71221.2364@compuserve.com [ Editor's note: I believe that WBCN aired the same concert as WNEW is going to play. Damien and I will compare notes and let the ELP Digest know if they are the same or different. - John - ] ------------------------------ From: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca (Anil Prasad) Subject: assorted stuff Date: Fri, 21 Aug 92 1:24:40 EDT First, that was an interesting interview with Triumvirat in the last issue. Second, I live in Canada where we are musically repressed and do not have access to lovely radio stations that broadcast ELP shows. So, if any of you make a hot tape of the radio broadcast of the ELP show, please get in touch with me. I've got plenty-o-ELP to trade. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Anil Prasad | "People that are really weird can get into ---------------------------| sensitive positions and have a tremendous wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca | impact on history." wcsanil@alfred.carleton.ca | -- J. I liked the >sound on the second CD of The Atlantic Years but my old Tarkus >tape sounds pretty bad (lots worse than the remix on The Atlantic >Years). I think that "The Atlantic Years" IS the remastered version. I doubt that they'll go back and remaster the individual albums. >So, buy BSS and WV1 now or later (when)? Except for "Toccata" and "Benny The Bouncer," all of Brain Salad Surgery is on "The Atlantic Years." "Works Volume 1" also has Emerson's piano concerto on it, as well as the full version of "Fanfare" and the pieces by Lake and Palmer. Depends on your taste. I bought "The Atlantic Years" yesterday. My first impressions: - A twelve-page foldout pamphlet is included, with photos of the band on one side and track listings and an article about the band on the other. - No track timings are given anywhere. My CD player tells me that disc one is 74:19, and disc two is 76:26 (!). The promotional sticker on the box says that there is "over two and a half hours" of music. That is true, with 45 seconds to spare. - Track divisions are inconsistent. For example, all seven sections of "Tarkus" are a single track, but "Karn Evil 9" is broken up into 4 tracks, even though this is not what the track listings say. No index numbers are used anywhere, unfortunately. I wish they had used more tracks on each disc. - Most of the recordings are noticeably clearer than the individual albums' CD versions ("As if a veil had been lifted from the music" - early CD promo). This is most likely due to using the master tape instead of some copy of it. The organ spit in "Tarkus" (among many other things) is better defined, and crisper. The place this probably makes the biggest impact is on the tracks from "Brain Salad Surgery." I had been pretty disappointed with the sound of the "Brain Salad Surgery" CD, but it is much better on the new disc. In general, things are a bit brighter and less smeared. Very nice. -The notable exception to this is, sadly, "Pirates," which may be no worse than the "Works" CD (I don't have it to compare), but is not much clearer than my LP. (Still sounds good, though.) -The noise floor has been reduced. I did A/B comparisons of the beginning of "The Endless Enigma," and the background noise is maybe 6 dB quieter on the new disc. There is release "stuff" on the synth part over the heartbeat there, that, while audible on the other disc, was masked enough so that I had never noticed it before. - The portion of "Pictures" that is on the compilation is the same as the second side of the original LP, minus "Nutrocker," plus the phrase "We're gonna give ya Pictures At An Exhibition." The end of the "Pictures" track ends with applause, and the tail of that fadeout overlaps with the first "heartbeat" of "The Endless Enigma." - The bleep at the end of the lead in "Aquatarkus," as it fades out, just before the recapitulation of the "Eruption" segment, is still there. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, that's okay. It shows that you probably have a saner perspective on the music of ELP than I do! :-> ) - "1st impression part 1" segues into part 2 with a barely-noticeable nod to the fadeout between them. The beginning of the fadeout and the end of the fadein are spliced fairly seamlessly together. - "Toccata" is the live version, from "Welcome Back My Friends." - "I Believe In Father Christmas" is the "original single release," with choir, orchestra, and sound effects, just like the video. - "Fanfare For The Common Man" has been heavily edited in the jam section. Although the 4 or 5 edit points may not be noticeable to someone who has never heard the piece, they are painfully evident to me. The word that came to mind as I listened is "mutilation." I think it would have been better if they had put some other track on the compilation, such as "Hoedown," rather than this hacked-up version of "Fanfare." My guess is that they wanted to include it because it has received so much airplay in the sports context. It WAS interesting, however, to hear how much the distortion levels increased as that jam went on. This was much more evident in this edited version, as the sonic context abruptly changed at the edit points. All in all, I think the compilation is a good value, and sounds great. I'm glad I held off on buying any more ELP CDs until this came out. I wish that "digital remastering" was the norm instead of the exception, though. It is unfortunate that record companies like Warner/Elektra/Atlantic allow the CD versions of albums in their libraries to be created from second-or-greater- generation copies of the master tapes, sometimes (as in the case of "Brain Salad Surgery," I suspect) with LP equalization on the tapes. Let me take this opportunity to thank Jim Smith for his help; a LOT of it came directly from his inputs or indirectly from his suggestions! See what two warped minds can do when you put 'em together!!! Hey, how 'bout our boys on "In Concert" last Friday?! (Well, 2am Saturday morning for me; that's dedication!) Not my favorite songs, and not enough Emerson, but I'll take any publicity of ELP and prog rock we can get... I *still* haven't seen the "Black Moon" video yet!!! Arggghh!!! Everybody take care and enjoy the end of ELP's "extended holiday"... ______________________________________________________________________________ Andy Moore "In the spaceship, the silver spaceship, the lion andy@ice.stx.com takes control..." - They Might Be Giants, "The Guitar" ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 2 Issue 19] *************************************
