I was lucky enough (?) to be in Philadelphia on December 28 when the tickets for the ELP show on Feb 5 went on sale. There was no mention of the previously announced Feb 6 show also supposedly at the Tower Theater. As I didn't get a chance to see a seating plan for the Tower (and haven't been there in about 15 years!), I'm wondering if there are any Philly-area ELP fans who know what the theater's configuration is like. The ticket I got was in the 'left orchestra' area which, on paper at least, sounds good. The one think I'm not looking forward to is the 300-mile drive from Hampton to Philly on the day of the concert. But, as it didn't appear that ELP would get any closer to southeastern Virginia on the current tour, I thought that I'd try the show up there! Aghh! This is probably because the newer, shortened arrangement of Pictures is already on the "In Concert" album (though the orchestra plays in parts off that so it wouldn't be the same). A quick look at the song list of the new CD seems to indicate a preference for newer songs and newer arrangements of things that already appear on one of the other "live" albums. My guess is that Knife Edge wouldn't have been included on the new CD (since it is also on In Concert) except that Tarkus sort of turns into it in an unavoidable sort of way. I'm not certain why we get another version of "Still... You Turn Me On". Did this arrangement feature any of Keith or Carl? Or is a Greg guitar/voice arrangement as on "Welcome Back..."? - John - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 93 16:28:01 EST From: Alex Slotkin Subject: Tracks on Pictures CD I finally replaced my taped copy of ELP's "Pictures At An Exhibition" this Christmas, and much to my surprise, each of the individual songs had its own track! I started harassing the Chicago Theater over the phone and they kept denying knowledge of the show until finally they told me that the tickets were going on sale Saturday, January 16. The show is now on February 21, not February 19 like the last ELP Digest stated. I got my tickets (wow, 2 ELP shows in less than 6 months, what a country!). I was wondering if anyone out there has heard who if anyone is going to be the opening act. I wish they would just scrub the opening act and put on a little longer show. Is anyoune else aware of the set list for the tour? Just wondering. Oh, and if you are going to the Chicago show, contact me at my email address and maybe we can meet before the show. Seth ------------------------------ From: selick@cs.bu.edu (Steven Selick) Date: Thu, 21 Jan 93 13:57:29 -0500 Subject: elp article Hi guys and gals (?) Just so you know, I have nothing to do with Korg, and this is not meant to be a commercial for them or their product. Anyway, I just got a cd that I mailed away for about a month ago from Korg's 01/W ad in Keyboard Mag in December (I think). Basically, for $3.50 (American) or 2.00 (English pounds) you get a 19 track CD with Keith Emerson on track 4. The piece, entitled, "Katoh-San" is 4:15 long, and runs the typical gamut of synth brass, vocal/stringy pads, keyboard interludes, and a rather rockin' section with a hammond organ. There was also a promo magazine included with a picture of Keith on the front cover, and then a full page article on why he loves his 01/W. There's also a nice picture of Keith on a Harley with an 01/W Keyboard. So here's how to get one of these nifty CD's: Send $3.50 to: or 2.00 English pounds to: Department CDO Department CDO Korg USA Korg UK Limited 89 Frost ST The Crystal Centre Westbury, NY 11590 Elmgrove Road Harrow, Middlesex, HA1 2YR It really is worth the $3.50 for this CD, and you get 18 other tracks of wild demo stuff. There's also Rick Wakeman (of Yes), Joe Zawinul (of Weather Report) and The YellowJackets did a track too (presumably with MIDI controllers for drums, bass, and the sax part). All Very cool stuff, and a very impressive sounding machine. Disclaimer: As I already said, I have no connections with Korg, and I just wanted to provide Digest readers with some cool info. Later, Steve selick@csa.bu.edu ------------------------------ From: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca (Anil Prasad) Subject: ELP Bits 'n' Pieces Date: Fri, 22 Jan 93 2:10:00 EST I got a chance to hang out with the geezers after their recent Ottawa show, and here's some info I managed to collect: - Lake is certain he'll be involved in a King Crimson reunion of some sort in the coming years. He speaks to Fripp every now and then these days... - Lake's aborted band with Geoff Downes (Ride The Tiger) featured MICHAEL GILES (of early Crimson fame) on drums! The tapes have been permanently shelved.... - Emerson is STILL working on that bloody solo album with Kevin Gilbert!!!!! Still no label, but he's dumped the geek lead singer from Kingdom Come. He said maybe he'll release in 1993, but I don't think so personally... - Lake isn't quite certain about a solo album for 1993 anymore, in fact he doubts it. There will be a NEW ELP studio album by year's end he said! They're gonna start working on it in the early summer. - Lake said ELP is kept in the dark about many record company decisions. He was shocked to hear a new double pack CD single with alternative live versions of tracks from the new live album was released in the UK. - The Japanese issue of the new live album features different material from the Euro/North American versions. - Palmer and Emerson *don't* keep in touch with Robert Berry anymore... they don't know whatever became of him (I told Emerson he's playing ELP and 3 tunes with his own band in the Bay area though, to which he said "Yeah, he should!" and laughed...) - Palmer said again that Asia is and always will be a corporate rock band, (this is something he mentioned on Canadian tv earlier in the week) and was completely ambivalent about future involvement. I asked Downes about this earlier this week and he couldn't believe Palmer meant it, Palmer however is adamant about this. He said, "Next time you talk to Geoff, tell him I meant it in a nice way!" and he laughed sarcastically... I think there's some tension between the two lads myself. I'll also take this opportunity to say that Palmer is an asshole of epic proportions. It's rare to find musicians so full of themselves. I'm sure I'm forgetting tons, but these seem like the most important bits... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anil Prasad | "Anyhow cow and many cows floating upside ----------------------------| down mao on tao brown cow how now." wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca | -- e.e. goings ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 3 Issue 2] ************************************
