No offense to small town papers like here in the Pioneer Valley, but they usually don't have much revelation to offer. After introducing Lake's phone interview by describing him as a member of "the fabled King Crimson before ELP formed", it goes on to talk about the fans as 70-80% old and 20-30% young. He also says that the advantage of a trio is the distinctness of each player, the disadvantage that when someone screws up it's pretty obvious. He says there is a little room for improvisation in the show but not much since the crowd wants to hear prepared music. He also expresses disappointment in modern music (yawn). "Lake said the present tour schedule will feature a show that is different from the one performed last year. The concerts will again be a mix of new and old ELP material, but the song list will not be the same." It says he will move to Los Angeles during '93 and that a new studio album is planned and that Lake plans on doing a solo album this year. Now here's the kicker, hold on to your hats... "And he did not rule out a reunion of King Crimson. 'It would be nice to make an album and play live,' he said of King Crimson. 'I've been talking to Robert [Crimson's ex-guitarist/leader Robert Fripp]. We may well end up doing something in the future. Right now, we're both busy. We're all still very friendly. There are no personal problems.'" (all excerpts unoffically but appreciatively regurgitated from Chris Hamel's article in the Hampshire Union-News 1/14/93) Well I don't suppose that this is as shocking as it seems. Fripp has said that all those "acquainted with the tradition" are potential future Crimson members, and that "all have expressed desire to work together in the future". Lake seems the most unlikely candidate, though. I mean, this article acts like Crimson never existed after 1969, which, according the Essential scrapbook, is Lake's opinion of the situation. I hope to be able to ask him about these things after the show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jan 93 16:48:31 CST From: doug@tellabs.com To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: UK Imports I just saw 2 ELP CDs in the import bin at a local CD store (I'm in the US). One was a 2-CD single with 4 selections. Black Moon, Better Days, Affairs of the heart, and one other I can't remember. It came in a standard CD jewel box and the cover was a close up of one of the merry-go-round horses from the Black Moon cover. Has anyone out there seen/heard this CD single set? And are the individual cuts any different than what was released on the US Black Moon CD. I can't see dumping $12 for four repackaged songs I already have. The other CD was a single in a yellow cardboard jacket with the ELP logo on it. It had Black Moon, Affairs of the Heart, Fanfare for the Common Man, and Jeruselem. Black Moon is a previously not released version of the song that was specially mixed for radio stationsr. Has anybody heard this version and is it all that different from the original. Fanfare and Jeruselem are the digitally remastered versions from the Atlantic Years Collection. Also just a comment. I can't wait for Feb. 21st! I have 20th row dead center tickets for the Chicago Theatre ELP performance. Which in my opinion will be just about optimum seating. Last August I had 12th row and Greg Lake's stage sound was really overpowering the mains. 20th row at the Chicago Theatre should also put me about 3-4 feet above the stage level. If anyone out there is going to the same show, email me and we'll get together for whatever before the show. I'm going with a friend who has never seen ELP live and we're going to run around the city all day. So, if you would like, get in touch, it's always fun to meet people who you've only met through their text. SEE THE SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can aony other readers help out? - John - ] An earlier posting showed ELP in Denver, CO on March 5th at the Paramount Theatre. I checked with them, and they don't know anything about an ELP concert, and they have something else scheduled for March 5th (so they are just keeping quiet about it). Does anyone have a revised schedule? Is ELP just going to skip Denver (not surprising)? On a related note, I was wondering what the number of ELP fans in the Colorado were, thinking that there probably were not many (why else do groups like Genesis, ELP, etc. always skip Denver). Anyway, one encouraging sign was that the local record store had sold out all of their copies of Live at The Royal Albert Hall by the time I got there. They only had 10, but still, I live in Fort Collins, and the store had been only open for 4 hours. John Marvin jsm@fc.hp.com P.S. All I can say is.... GREAT!!! The tracks that really stand out as being exceptional are: Knife Edge, Creole Dance, Lucky Man, Pirates, and Final Medley (Fanfare, America, Rondo). The Tarkus Medley is good too, but I think it would be almost impossible for ELP to out do the version of Tarkus on Welcome Back. I guess what I'm trying to say is go out and buy it. It's called "Alex Masi, Attack Of The Neon Shark". He said that there would be a pleasant suprise on it for me. Anyway, there is a guitar version of ELP's arrangement of Toccata. It was pretty cool. The synth-drum solo of Carl Palmer's was done with drums and guitar. It's one of, if not the only ELP cover I am aware of. And it is very faithful to the ELP version. Is anyone aware of any other ELP covers??? BTW, the CD is on Enigma Records number 7 73410-2. If you find it in a cut out bin it's worth the price. The rest of the CD is all instrumental speed guitar stuff. Only 19 more days to ELP in Chicago!!! Hello: I saw ELP in New Haven, CT on Tuesday (2/9), my 6th and final show of the tour. It was great, and after the show we followed them to a local diner where, at one point, Keith started banging away on the piano that was there and singing! Nobody even realized who he was. It was pretty wild! We also spoke with them in the lobby of the hotel they were staying at, which was a Holiday Inn! They were very friendly, especially Carl, who recognized us and thanked us for waiting (we didn't bother them while they were eating at the diner). I should also note that both Keith and Greg hooked up with bimbos after the show, which surprised me! I always imagined them being older, mellow, family men. Keith came into the hotel lobby with no jacket and his shirt open (it was bitter cold out!), drink in one hand, girl in the other. Both girls were VERY young. Upon discovering that the hotel lounge was closed, Keith and his little "girlfriend" left to go to a bar in town. I'll also note that Greg has really put on quite a bit of weight again, perhaps due to the fact he is trying to quit smoking. He carries it well, though! So, we had a great time, and it was a lot of fun seeing them after the show. BTW, Carl told me they hope to have the new studio album out sometime in October. We'll see... Bye for now, -Damien- (Please send *all mail* to 5545135@mcimail.com) [ Editor's note: Too bad you didn't have one of those portable DAT machines when Keith ripped into the piano at the bar. I'd love to hear what he played! - John - ] ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 3 Issue 3] ************************************
