First show was on March 24 1993, Wednesday, here in Rio de Janeiro, 9:30 PM. The place: Canecao. US$ 14 tickets for a standing place, right near the stage. US$ 50 tickets for comfortable seats, but pretty far from the action. The place was not big enough and was entirely crowded. Hot weather in Rio almost made the band melt. Air conditioned wasn't powerful enough for all the multitude. Thanks to ELP Digest, I knew in advance all they would play. Remarkable show. The musicians seemed to be amazed to see everybody singing all the lyrics with Lake. My voice was gone after the show. And my ears whistling and whistling. Next morning I woke up at 7 AM and rushed to Sao Paulo (some 300 miles away from Rio) by motorbike to see the shows on the 25th and 26th of March. The Thursday show was just like the Wednesday one. I took some powerful binoculars to the place and kept studying Emerson's keyboard technique. Exasperating, magic, unreal! On Friday, after having rested more, the band was much more concentrated and soft. Emerson was more precise and fast than before. And even relaxed and distracted: when he started the "accoustic" piano presentation where he was supposed to play Close to Home, he came up with eight or more phrases of the wonderful Dream Runner (from his Best Revenge solo CD). When he noticed he was playing the wrong tune he just smiled and quickly switched to Close to Home. When they came back for the encore, during the Hammond murder scene, Emerson played a few bars of (who could wonder?) Mickey Mouse Theme from Disneyland. After the show I could have the honour to get their autographs. Very nice and friendly guys, those 3. - C.A.T. ------------------------------ From: CHRISTOPHER CHARLES GERBI Subject: General Response To: j.arnold@bull.com Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1993 23:11:28 -0400 (EDT) Forwarded message: > From ccgerbi Sun Apr 11 23:05:11 1993 > From: CHRISTOPHER CHARLES GERBI > Message-Id: <199304120305.AA15642@amhux3.amherst.edu> > Subject: General Response > To: ccgerbi@unix.amherst.edu > Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1993 23:05:09 -0400 (EDT) > X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL17] > Content-Type: text > Content-Length: 1540 > > Hello! I bought my copies at Tower Records in London on a vacation trip there. I think that Tower Records in Burlington, Mass. (USA) had a copy of the "Welcome Back My Friends..." CD (2 discs; ~$32, I think) a few weeks ago. It's got surprisingly good sounds for a live recording from the 70s. And, yes, there are many of us would are interested in transcriptions. Especially of Karn Evil 9. There I found a friend of mine who told me that he chatted with Keith Emerson the day before, in the hotel! He went to the hotel to try to meet someone of them. He could easily enter the hall, and get to the pool. Nobody was on his way, and guess who was on the pool? Keith Emerson! They kept talking for about one hour, about keyboards and progressive rock. He discovered that Emerson had never heard about Triumvirat, a progressive rock group which he likes a lot (I had already heard about them, but I don't know any songs). The most funny was that, when he was going out, a security man came and said, "You were not supposed to be here! Go out!", and he said, "But I'm going out!" and he spent a lot of time discussing with him! When Yes come to Brazil, it will be MY turn!! It was a pardody of ELP's Lucky Man. I thought that you would need to buy a copy! It had great lyrics; e.g. instead of the lyrics about "he got up and died", it went "So they poached him and he fried! Date: Wed, 28 Apr 93 10:59:25 -0400 From: arnold@cyclades.ma30.bull.com Hi! With many thanks to Carlos (cat@icad.puc-rio.br), I have received uuencoded GIFs of autographs by Keith, Greg, and Carl. These files are pretty large and I am interested in knowing how many people would like them. If there's a huge number, I'll post them as special issues of ELP Digest, otherwise, I'll send them out individually to those who ask for them. So, pleae let me know. And, yes, once I get a chance to take a breath this summer, I'll set up the ELP ftp site with back issues, these GIFs, etc. Keep that email coming! - John - ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 3 Issue 8] ************************************
