Oh, what a Humpty Man he was!" Reminds me of when Greg was on the Mark and Brian show, and they played a commercial for "Emerson, Lake, and Papal (?)", where the pope was a part of the group. They played a snippet of "Lucky Man," with "the Pope" singing REALLY off-key. ...well, I thought it was funny. --Jeremy "I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings." I'd rather have pictures of the band -- 3's live band especialy -- than autographs, cos I haven't really seen pics of them. Scott -- Guessing problems only to deceive the mention (Yes) [ Editor's note: Look ahead in this Digest. I've started arrangements and planning for me to put the ELP Digest back issues and other stuff in this ftp site. I'll put a message in the ELP Digest when it's all set. But there is already some ELP stuff there. So, check it out if you're interested. I essentially traced a printed copy of the logo, so it's pretty accurate. elp is the bitmap, and elpmask is a mask bitmap. Just same 'em in files elp and elpmask. Then use them to set the root cursor. On HP-UX X11, I do: xsetroot -cursor elp elpmask to set up the root cursor. They're attached. Date: Mon, 10 May 93 22:24:53 -0400 From: arnold@cyclades.ma30.bull.com Hi! Just a few things today. 1. I've gotten permission to establish the ELP DIgest back issues and GIFs (mentioned in V3 #8) in the music-associated ftp archives at ftp.uwp.edu. (Thanks to Scott McMahan for the pointer!) Rather than send out the flood of request I received for the ELP autograph GIFs, I'll put my energy into setting up the ftp site. If, after the ftp archive is set up, people have trouble getting the autographs, I'll mail them out on a special case basis. (I am assuming that most of the ELP Digest readers can get ftp stuff but I'm willing to pass along some of the stuff to people with ftp access.) 2. Scott McMahan (in his message telling me about the ftp site) asked if anyone knows of pictures from the 3 tour (Emerson and Palmer's abnd that included Robert Berry on bass/guitar/vocals. I don't recall a tour book since it was mostly a tour of small clubs (e.g., the Paradise in Boston). If anyone has any pictures that could be scanned in, we can share those via the ftp site, too. 3. Since I'm guessing that many of the ELP Digest readers are software types (industry, university, etc.), I'll ask: are any of you are going to ICSE (the International Conference on Software Engineering) in Baltimore next week? I'll be there Tuesday through Friday and would love to meet the people behind the mail messages. So, if you'll be there, please let me know. Till next time, - John - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 93 12:10:41 +0100 From: "Pete Cole" To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: Emerson question (ELP Digest) Anybody got any ideas about what it is that Emerson says on the Five Bridges album by the Nice, at the end of the 'Pathetique' Symphony No 6 3rd Movement ... this has been puzzling me for many years. I though that he might be telling the audience to shut-up, which seems pretty unlikely ... ! ------------------------------ To: arnold Subject: ELP "in the news" Date: Wed, 12 May 93 18:40:48 -0400 From: arnold 2 items seen recently: ================= >From TV Guide (March 20, 1993, "Ask TV Guide"): Question: What is the music used in the commercials for The Beef Industry Council? Answer: That familiar symphonic interlude, entitled "Hoedown", comes from the ballet suite "Rodeo" by American composer Aaron Copland. It's available on recordings by several orchestras, and even received a rousing rock treatment by '70s art rockers Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ================= >From "Roland Users Group" a publication of Roland US (a musical equipment manufacturer), Volume 11, #1, p. 5: "Welcome, my friends, to the show that never ends." For Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer, it's a show that just keeps getting better and better. One of rock's true supergroups, ELP set the standard for progressive rock sophistication and arena spectacle in the early seventies. From their melodious multi-platinum hits such as "Lucky Man" and "From the Beginning," to the bombastic excitement of their albums Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery, ELP took rock to new levels of musicality and expression. Reunited in 1991 after a 15-year hiatus, ELP recorded Black Moon, and also released the brilliant Emerson, Lake & Palmer Live at the Royal Albert Hall, which documents their triumphant 1992 world tour. Of their return to the performing life, vocalist/bassist/guitarist Greg Lake says, "We realize that you can't be away for 15 years and expect people to pick up where you left off. But frankly, the response has been quite moving. That's the reason for this live album. We wanted to give something back to the people who've stuck with us along the way." On this tour, ELP has stuck with Roland as well, in a big way. According to keyboard technician Allan Pollard, Keith Emerson uses the JD-800 Programmable Synthesizer extensively, along with another favorite module, the D-550 LA Synthesizer Module. Percussion tech Garry Hodgeson also informs us that Carl Palmer uses the R-8 Human Rhythm Composer to add to his incredible palette of drum sounds. Both report that Emerson is tremendously excited about the new JD-990 SuperJD Synthesizer as well. We can hardly wait for what ELP has in store for us in the next 20 years! ================= ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 3 Issue 9] ************************************
