Are you certain that ELP will be on Monday Night Football on September 20? In Dave Terralavoro's newsletter (a followup to the recent issue of his fanzine) that I received a few nights ago, it said to expect ELP on Monday Night Football on *December 27*. Did Jim Smith have updated information? I can only surmise that David had his >>> facts wrong, or ELP was there but didn't get televised. >>> my apologies to those who watched to see ELP and didn't see them. No problem, Jim. However, another Digest reader reports that he has read that ELP will be on Monday Night Football on December 27, 1993. So maybe there was a misunderstanding sometime during your conversation with David. Anyway, one interesting tidbit is that I taped Monday Night Football too (just in case). And although there was no ELP, there was a "music feature" at the beginning: a video montage scene of the two teams playing was done to the music of Vanessa Williams. So, my guess is that ABC has introduced this "popular music over football film" concept as an intro to each week's game. Thus, my guess is that if/when ELP is featured, there will be this kind of treatment: low-key, ELP music over football film. And if the other report is true (about a Dec. 27 date) combined with the rumored ELP remake of "I Believe in Father Christmas", then maybe (just maybe) that's what this talk is all about. I can picture it now. "... the Christmas you get you deserve..." as a quarterback is thrown to the ground. What delightful imagery! Thanks for the update. I'm sure we'd all rather have taped it (and now erase it) rather that missing the chance. Unfortunately, there was no quick and easy way to confirm your report in time to NOT send it out. My apologies, too, to anyone who was inconvenienced by this small false alarm. - John - [ Editor's note: There was also a Frito-Lay (snack food company) ad in this Sunday's newspaper that mentioned watching Monday Night Football all season for special musical themes from your facorite Polydor artists. The bands listed weren't in alphabetical order and ELP was mentioned second to last (and Vanessa Williams was mentioned 4th). This would seem to corroborate the story that ELP will be featured on Dec. 27. So there's still hope. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Sep 93 15:01:58 -0400 From: barrett@astro.cs.umass.edu (Daniel Barrett) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Re: ELP Digest V3 #14 >The "Where You've Been In Time" Edition You're getting more subtle! To recall, it appeared to have been an American made film, however I only saw the ending credits and wasn't smart enough to pull a copy of TV Guide to investigate. I am very new to this Internet conversing, so bear with me... I did FTP over and checked out the August Digest...there was a reference to the "1 P.M." album...I purchased this album lo, those many years ago when the prospect of no more ELP albums became a harsh reality for me. Not only because of Palmer's presence, however, but because another favorite musician of mine was there, John Nitzinger, a very good rock composer/guitarist. I was fascinated with the idea of his songs with Palmer providing the percussion but I was disappointed immediately by the fact that neither of these 2 favorites of mine seemed to have much to do with the finished product. Nitzinger only CO-wrote ONE song, and there wasn't much that Carl could do with the music that was there beyond keep time and stay awake. I was so upset that I gave the album away...in retrospect, I wish I had kept it, as I haven't found anything with John Nitzinger's name on it since. His 3 solo albums are quite good, by the way, and he also wrote some songs for BLOODROCK (their few GOOD songs). Anyway, I have not seen or heard anything about this album since then until I read it in that Digest, and I might even buy the darned thing on CD if it ever came out, purely for historical (hysterical?) purposes. Certainly not for the music... Hope this has been of interest...look forward to hearing from anyone who shares my love for these 3 wonderful musicians. -TOM- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Sep 93 12:04:00 pdt From: Jim Smith To: J.Arnold@bull.com Subject: ELP on King Biscuit Monday night John: I subscribe to the radio-concerts mailing list ( radio-concerts-request@cs.albany.edu ), and this just came in: ================================================================ King Biscuit Flower Hour (DIR Radio Network, weekly, 60 minutes, check local stations) Note: Date given is first day of week show normally runs. Gibraltar is an Internet mailing list/Digest dedicated to discussion of progressive rock, especially newer ProgRock bands. If you're intereted, here's the contact information they put at the end of each issue: >>> ************************************************************************** >>> * Submissions & Subscriptions: gib@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu * >>> * * >>> * Archives: * >>> * FTP: ftp.uwp.edu (131.210.1.4) under /pub/music/lists/gibraltar * >>> * Server: gibraltar-server@maestro.mitre.org (write 'help' in msg body.) * >>> ************************************************************************** So, anyway, here's an extract of someone's letter about a definition of Progressive Rock. >>> ------------------------------ From: brendah@netcom.com (Brenda Holloway) Subject: Dave Stewart defines Prog-rock [Taken from the October 1993 issue of Keyboard Magazine's letters column, where Dave Stewart of Hatfield & The North, National Health, and Stewart/ Gaskin explains what prog rock is... and what it isn't.] Prog rock, in its most positive form, grew out of '60s and '70s musicians desire to extend the boundaries of rock music by introducing new harmonic, melodic, sonic, rhythmic, lyrical and structural ideas. People were bored with pop cliches and two-minute, three-chord (or was it the other way round?) songs about _lurve_, and so began to compose pieces of symphonic scope and duration. Though vocals were still present, the idea of "the song" became less important, and lengthy instrumentals ruled the earth. Two of the most important hallmarks of prog rock were complexity and originality. The latter must be qualified by the admission that many of the compositional ideas had been around in classical music for hundreds of years, but to hear them applied to rock instruments was novel and exciting. For a brief period, a genuine period of exploration governed the style, and groups like Soft Machine (on their first four albums) and Magma came out with some breathtaking stuff. But true and undiluted originality rarely achieves popularity in its own lifetime, and the public and media came to favor the watered-down, song-based work of Yes, Genesis, etc. Though these bands contained some excellent musicians, their collective impurity of compositional thought and their readiness to blatantly recycle light classical bits and pieces signalled the end of the great progressive experiment, and the genre collapsed into counter- revolutionary codswallop, pretentious lyrics, and redundant guitar solos. We have reached a point where the word "progressive" itself is in danger of becoming a nonsense. I would suggest we reserve its use to describe the bands of yesteryear and their latter-day imitators, and think of a new word to describe the exploratory rock music of the '90s, whatever that may be. Dave Stewart London, England [And this from another letter in the same issue] The master himself, Keith Emerson, was asked that very question in a recent interview. His reply: "It is music that does progress. It takes an idea and develops it, rather than just repeat it. Pop songs are about repetition and riffs and simplicity. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down [and] the other way around, and explores its potential." Who better to define progressive rock than Mr. Emerson? Liv G. Occasionally, people's email addresses stop working on my mailing list. I try very hard to dig out your original subscribing mail and make sure I've gotten it right. But, sometimes, I can't get mail to you either. I never intentionally drop someone from the mailing list without mail from them asking to be dropped. So, if you stop getting the Digest, please send me mail asking what's up. I will respond (usually within minutes). If that doesn't work, please try to find a friend with another email access path to me. In the case of broken mailers, networks, etc. this may be necessary.
