ELP SHOW WILL BE ACOUSTIC !! Happy Birthday, Keith Emerson! Editor's Prelude: As is our custom, we send our annual "anniversary" edition out on Keith Emerson's birthday (November 2). Two years ago, 11/2/1991, (as Jim Smith points out in his contribution to today's edition) the ELP Digest was started as a means of getting about 10 ELP fans connected on the Internet. Since then, we have publicized our existence and now number more than 250. It's great to share information so quickly and freely. (For instance, check out the ELP Unplugged-style gig in New York City in 2 weeks courtesy of Damien!) I love putting the Digest together every few weeks and am pleased that it's been able to continuously share news, opinions, and discussion of ELP. Thanks for all of you! Now read on and prepare your credit cards for the season that brings you the digital remasters of the complete ELP catalog! Well, the fact is that along with the box set being released on the 16th, the rest of the ELP catalog is being rereleased on cd. Everything that has currently been available in this country is being remastered on disc, as well as a few imports: Welcome back and Love Beach in specific. The works live album is being reissued with a few surprises, 7 unissued live, but unspecified performances. A limited edition Brain Salad album will also be made available which in cludes a poster and, I believe, a cd cover that folds out like the original vinyl cover. But wait, there's more...the box set will have the songs that were discussed issues agoas well as some other stuff--> Touch and go (rerecorded) Hang On To A Dream (rercorded) 21st Century Schizoid Man Fire (a carl Palmer tune, rerecorded) Pix At Exhibition (rerecorded, in Dolby Surround Sound no less) I believe in father xmas and the following older, but unreleased recordings--> Rondo (live) Bo Diddley Prelude and Fugue wow...Now the bad part. The box will cost 57.99; the 3 two-cd sets 23.99; the limited edition Brain Salad 15.99 and everything else is 11.99 This is ELP month!! :-) Paul Madison - Tower Records, Los Angeles - Buyer shostako@netcom.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 93 23:46:45 -0700 From: shostako@netcom.com (paul madison) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Re: ELP Digest V3 #15 [...] I happened to attend a concert here that billed Greg Lake and his new band. IIt was a little predictable: they played Lucky Man, Still..., and In The Beginning as well as a short instrumental piece which I wasn't familiar with. Greg Lake's voice sounded better without having to compete with E and P, but the set was dynamically and emotionally static, sort of a new age Lake. He was promoting the new box set, but didn't make any references to his solo future. I'll be in touch as soon as I get my hands on some new discs...:-) shostako@netcom.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 93 23:19:53 -0700 From: shostako@netcom.com (paul madison) To: J.Arnold@bull.com Subject: concerning Lake solo show Yes, this was very recent...At a recent outdoor show sponsored by LA station KLSX, it was announced that Lake had gotten together with some studio musicians and that they were playing together for the first time together that day (last Sunday, the 10th). Lake didn't mention any solo plans, but indicated that their short set was prepared solely for the purpose of that one show. However, Greg Lake doesn't live near LA, does he? I wonder what could have induced him to play there. I suppose it's possible that he was town to conduct business with his label, but... Personally, I would prefer to hear more from Keith Emerson, but the possibility seems probable (solo work that is). Please post the bit about Lake's show to the newsletter, perhaps others have seen similar performances? Incidentally, where do you live? Have you seen ELP perform often? I personally have only seen them once - during their last tour. shostako@netcom.com ------------------------------ From: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca (Anil Prasad) Subject: CARL PALMER QUITS ELP! "It blends all their repetoire, but it works because putting different tracks together shows them off in a different light." The set opens with 40 minutes of new music - actually rerecordings of songs from their musical pasts outside of elp: The Nice's "Hang On To A Dream" King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" Crazy World Of Arthur Brown's "Fire" and continues with new recordings of ELPowell's "Touch and Go", "I Believe in Father Christmas" and the first studio recording of Pictures at an Exhibition recorded in Dolby Surround! In addition, Levinson went to the vaults for some unreleased old stuff: "Rondo" recorded live in December 1970 "Bo Diddley" a studio outtake "Prelude and Fugue" from October 1971. ELP signed 10,000 cards that are randomly inserted into the sets and the packaging is said to be elaborate. In addition to upgrading their old catalog and releasing WBMFTTSTNE, Victory is restoring *In Concert* to its original length and title *Works Live*. "It was delivered as a double album" Levinson explains, "but Atlantic decided to make it a single. We've restored it to a 92-minute two-CD set, with a whole LP of unissued live performances. There's an orchestral 'Bolero' with the band, plus 'Fanfare for the Common Man' 'Tank" and a bunch of other things." I hope Victory can have all of this ready by the 16th of November - these companies don't have a great track record for meeting their own release dates BUT with Christmas right around the corner the pressure to be timely is on. FM's format is more free-form, but is mostly made up of college alternative music. Since the genre of music I listen to is mostly along the lines of ELP, Yes, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra ... etc... that is what I play on my FM show. I am looking to somehow get in contact with any of the members of ELP (or anyone else in that genre of music) to do an interview with in person or (more realistically) by phone to be aired at the radio station. And Happy 2nd anniversary, elp-digest! I remember when this digest was just beginning, it was just a small group of us discussing ELP and other topics. There was a rumor that ELP had re-united, and hopes that maybe an album and tour would come out of that. It has been an eventful two years, and the band seems to be doing pretty well. And now the digest has over 250 readers. In his latest ELP newsletter, David Terralavoro gave the track listings for ELP's 4 CD boxed set, "Return of the Manticore," scheduled for release on November 16th, as follows: DISC 1 Touch and Go Hang on to a Dream 21st Century Schizoid Man Fire Pictures at an Exhibition I Believe in Father Christmas DISC 2 Tarkus >From the Beginning Take a Pebble (From "Welcome Back My Friends...") Knife Edge Paper Blood Hoedown Rondo (Previously unreleased, live 1970) DISC 3 The Barbarian Still You Turn Me On The Endless Enigma C'est La Vie The Enemy God Bo Diddley (from 1975 - according to a reliable/anonymous source) Bitches Crystal A Time and a Place Living Sin DISC 4 Jerusalem Fanfare for the Common Man Black Moon Watching Over You Piano Concerto No. 1 For You Prelude and Fugue (previously unreleased - no year known) Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman Pirates Affairs of the Heart All of the songs are digitally remastered and a 36 page booklet with liner notes written by Chris Welch is said to be included. I just have to wonder why the overlap with The Atlantic Years. Oh well. One other item of interest from David's newsletter: Keith Emerson has written an autobiography called "Off the Shelf." It was planned to be released in October, but was not released. A 10 song CD will be included with the book, with "Abaddon's Bolero" and other Emerson material. - Jim Smith smithj@sr.hp.com ------------------------------ Date: 02 Nov 93 11:03:03 EST From: Damien DeSimone <71221.2364@CompuServe.COM> To: John Arnold Subject: ELP AT BENEFIT SHOW IN NEW YORK!! They are priced at $100, $40, $30, and $25 (I think). Also on the bill with ELP is Southside Johnny and I believe one other act. I also heard that ELP might be performing an UNPLUGGED-type set, but I didn't confirm this! I can't believe this is going to happen and I'll be in Paris. Thus, I won't even be tempted to try to get tickets and go down to NYC for the day. I hope this event is captured on tape (video and audio would be nice). And to think, when I got my chance to ask ELP a question on WBCN radio here in Boston, I asked them if they'd consider doing and Unplugged-type show and shamelessly told them how great they sounded the time I saw them play "Show Me the Way to Go Home" on piano, drums, and bass. At the time, Greg Lake sounded like he'd never thought about and mentioned something about problems with the bass parts. (Come on, the guy played an acoustic bass-ish thing on "Watching Over You".) And now, it's come to this.
