ELP Digest Friday, 12 Nov 1993 Volume 3 : Issue 17 The "Guaranteed to Blow Your Head Apart" Edition Today's Topics: Atlantic years "Atlantic Years" and "Return Of The Manticore" Box set and re-issues in UK? Billboard disillusioned with ELPP Now I get it "Live at the Wiltern" Return Of The Manticore ELP on TV <=== IMPORTANT!!! ELP Calendar of Events <=== IMPORTANT!!! Dual Catalogs? Re: Dual Catalogs? Re: Dual Catalogs The Emerson Collection / Manhattan Collection Prelude ======= As next week's release of the new Return of the Manticore set approaches, there has been a great increase in news and discussion. I suggest that all US-area readers pay special attention to the news (later in this issue; thanks, folks!) that ELP has a busy week next including (hold your breath) alleged appearances on the Regis and Cathy Lee show (Monday) and the Howard Stern show (Tuesday). Weird but wonderful. I'll be in France most of next week so I'm hoping that my family or Digest readers will be able to record these and share them with folks who can't see/hear for themselves. Also, the appearance of the new material in a box set only has definitely hit a nerve. It's a shame that it appears we'll have to fork over a lot of money to hear the new material and that the die-hard fans have to reinvest in yet another "Greatest Hits" to get at it. I am hoping that some of this is due to decisions at the record company level where, alas, ELP probably has less clout than in 1973. Still, there's good news that there are plans for a new album in May 1994 which should start our hopes for a summer 1994 tour. Have fun. I hope to hear the new album shortly after I get back from France! - John - P.S. We can also celebrate this edition as the ELP Digest's first edition to directly reach 300 subscribers (not counting re-distribution, ftp access, etc.). Thanks to everyone for keeping the interest level high! P.P.S. Starting with this issue, I'm putting the mail addresses, ftp access, copyright, etc., info at the end. I hope it makes it easier for you all to read. ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1993 09:34:15 -0500 From: Brian Dodds To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Atlantic years Hello.. Great to hear of the new box set, as well as the rereleases.. Too bad I went and bought them all on the old format CD :( Oh well.. Which reminds me.. Does anyone want a copy of The Atlantic Years? It's only been played .5 times (2nd disc only), and is in perfect shape.. Make an offer, I need to make room in my CD rack for the box set.. :) Thanks.. Bri.. ------------------------------ From: "Jeff Lawrence" Date: Fri, 5 Nov 93 10:57:44 EST To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: "Atlantic Years" and "Return Of The Manticore" I've got a strange question that I'm sure some people on the list are asking. Why are there two box sets out right now? I assume both are not by Atlantic. The reason I ask is that I have to opportunity to pick "The Atlantic Years" for $16 CDN (about $13 US) on CD. Since the only ablums I don't have are "Pictures" and "Tarkus", I'm not sure what is on there is worth getting 2CD's of some stuff that I already have on CD. How much of "Tarkus" and "Pictures" are on "Atlantic"? If they are both completely on there then "Atlantic" might be worth it. But then there is the fact that the re-mastered versions might be out with /without bonus-tracks. Are the re-released albums having rare tracks like the Rykodisc Bowie albums? SPIKE ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Nov 1993 14:26:27 -0500 (EST) From: FISHBOY Subject: Billboard To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com greetings, In the November 6 issue of _Billboard_ there's an article about the use of Dolby Surround system to record "Pictures" on the new boxed set, and it says they're also using it to record their next album. It also mentions that "I Believe In Father Christmas" will (of course) be pushed as a single and that they took new approaches to the stuff they rerecorded to make it sound '90s instead of 20 years old. One example they sited was doing "Hang On to a Dream" in 4/4 rather than 3/4 time. Not quite sure how that would make it sound more modern, but it should be interesting! One side not - in both this article and another little blurb I read in a paper about the boxed set, they refer to it as a 25th Anniversry box. Didn't the band form in 1970, though? That would make it 23 or 24 years, depending on whether you're talking about 1993 or '94. I'm confused. See ya, Andy Acunzo aacunzo@ccmail.sunysb.edu P.S. Something to ponder.... In acoustic performances, does Keith Emerson wrestle a grand piano? :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Nov 1993 19:23:42 -0500 (EST) From: FISHBOY Subject: disillusioned with ELP To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com, v091rusj%ubvms.bitnet@ccmail.sunysb.edu Hi everyone, Is anyone else out there as disillusioned with ELP as I am? Let me explain. When I first heard that ELP was reuniting for a new album and tour in early '92, I was really happy that they were putting out a new album to tour for, rather than just reuniting to do the reunion circuit without playing any new material. I hate when bands do that. Anyway, I got the album and saw the tour, and ELP seemed great. But then they went on an compilation-releasing spree, the likes of which I've never seen before. Within the span of a year and a half they put out _The Atlantic Years_, _Live at the Royal Albert Hall_, the _Welcome Back_ video, and now, on 11/16 they'll be releasing _The Return of the Manticore_, as well as remastered versions of all their albums. Can you say "overkill"? I knew that you could. _Royal Albert Hall_ - I have no complaints about this. _Welcome Backl_ - This video, while interesting to watch, seems very hastily put together. The discussions often have nothing to do with the songs that come before or after them, and the 14 years between ELP's breakup and reunion are magically skipped over. Contrast this with the _Yesyears_ video, and you'll see a world of difference. _The Atlantic Years_ - In and of itself, there's nothing really wrong with this set, aside from the mislabelling on disc 2 and the fact that "Tarkus" is one track, as opposed to being broken up into sections. I was glad to get remastered versions of these songs, as I'm sure many of you were. _Return of the Manticore_ - Yes, I am criticizing this album before I've seen or heard it. I'm basing my complaints on the info posted in the last digest. As far as I can tell, 30-40% of this album is a complete waste. I am referring to all the tracks which were already released in state-of-the-art sound 1 year ago in _Black Moon_ and _The Atlantic Years_. ELP could have released their 40 minutes of new recordings (isn't there an unwritten rule that CDs in boxed sets are supposed to be hovering around the 70-75 minute mark) and 3 previously unreleased tracks as a single CD, but they know their fans are dying to hear this stuff, so they wrapped a boxed set around it. The rereleases - These are great in and of themselves, but I can't believe they have the gall to release them and the box on the same day. To me, this says they have no respect for their fans whatsoever. They *know* a lot of their fans are going to want these remastered CDs because some of the original ones sound terrible, and they *know* that anyone who's enough of a fan to go out and buy these remastered discs is also going to want their new rerecordings, so what they're basically saying is "Come buy our boxed set. Sure, we know you just bought 3/4 of this stuff on the remastered albums, but this is the only way you can get the new stuff, he-he-he." Geez, do they need money that badly? Yeah, Greg looks like he hasn't eaten in a few months (ooh, that was totally uncalled for. Somebody slap me. :) ) So basically, if you bought _The Atlantic Years_ last year, thinking, 'oh great, remastered ELP stuff,' and you buy _Manticore_ and the remastered CDs, as I'm sure many fans will (not me, can't afford it :( ) you'd have 3 brand spanking new remastered versions of "Tarkus," "Pirates," "The Endless Enigma," etc. Is this necessary? Of course not, it's merely a chance for them to rake in the bucks with minimal effort. In their defense, maybe they had no hand in putting together _The Atlantic Years_, but they could have worked the boxed set around it, making it a companion to it rather than including a lot of the same masterial. That way, at least it would be worth it for someone who doesn't plan to get the remastered albums. For those who do get the remastered albums, it still wouldn't be worth it, only maybe then you'd have 2 rather than 3 remastered versions of a lot of the songs. They should have done something like Led Zeppelin, who released a boxed set #2 with everything that wasn't in #1, at the same time as rereleasing the albums, enabling those who already had the first boxed set to complete their collection with *no overlap of material*, and those who didn't to buy the albums with the songs in their original sequences. Then, like I said, they could have put out the new stuff on one CD. Like they say, "C'est la vie..." Thanks for reading my tirade. Geez, only one smiley in the whole dang post. How's this?: :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Later everyone, Andy Acunzo aacunzo@ccmail.sunysb.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Nov 1993 14:37:57 -0500 (EST) From: FISHBOY Subject: Now I get it To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com, v091rusj%ubvms.bitnet@ccmail.sunysb.edu Hi everyone, I think this is my 3rd post in this digest. I'm sorry, but I just figured this out - ELP is rereleasing everything on 11/16 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of _Brain Salad Surgery_, right? (According to a list I have, BSS was released on 11/19/73.) Either that or they're celebrating 15 years of _Love Beach_! (11/15/78) Now *there's* some food for thought... :) Bye, Andy Acunzo aacunzo@ccmail.sunysb.edu P.S. Other than the fold-out special release of BSS, any word on whether the new CDs will come with all the original packaging? (I don't have CDs and records to compare, but I ran into a vinyl copy of _Trilogy_ in a store a few months ago which had this psychadelic-looking picture of a whole bunch of Keiths, Gregs, and Carls in the woods, which isn't on my CD. Other than that and the fold-out BSS, are there any other omissions from the packaging of the currently available CDs?) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Nov 93 11:55:18 -0800 From: David M. Tratt To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: "Live at the Wiltern" I found the 2CD "Live at the Wiltern" yesterday, and I must say that Backstage have done a very nice job on it (cat. no. is BKCD 035/036). It contains the whole show in excellent quality (as it should; it was broadcast after all). The sound is truly "thunderous" and the band are clearly in high spirits - a recom- mended purchase even for those who weren't there (I was). Packaging is nice enough - band photos, pic disks (albeit a little indistinct); playlist and cues are accurate; timings mostly accurate. The only bug is that the liner assigns a date of March 19, whereas the event actually took place on the 17th. But why the hell must I buy also three CDs full of old stuff I already have ? I am always pissed of if a band releases a compilation full of old material with just a few unreleased items added to get the fans interested. Okay, you may say: the other CDs contain REMASTERED material. So what ?! As I understand ALL ELP CDs are now to be released remastered, so why do I need this compilation ? My guess is that Atlantic hasn't made any new manufacturing runs recently and that all new shipments of ELP product will be on Victory. re: the worry about Victory's distribution. Victory seems to have a distribution arrangement with Polygram (a big company for those who don't know the record biz names) so getting the stuff to stores is not a problem. Phil Carson (owner of Victory) is a big name who can get attention of record companies and may even have formed Victory with some help (financial, service, or any other form) from Polygram.
