Victory release: Works Live ** FLASH** -> ELP on KLOS (Los Angeles) radio Friday morning (12/17) ELP on KLOS, supplemental Prelude ======= A quick follow-up issue this time. Mostly to pass along the information that ELP is slated to appear on LA radio this Friday morning (West Coast readers take note). Also, the miro-reviews of the new Victory releases are coming in and I thought people might wnat to see what others are saying in case there are certain albums you might want to include in a December spending spree. And don't forget ELP on Arsenio Hall tomorrow night. It's great to see that Victory and the ELP publicists are working so hard and getting some exposure. And I have to wait until Christmas to hard the new box set! Till next time..... ELP is scheduled to be on Monday Night Football on December 27th, both according to the Victory Records blurb from David Terralavoro, and the most recent ELP newsletter. pal.gjortz@samfunnsmed.uio.no writes: >Hi, folks, > >At the ELP concert in Oslo 10 Nov 1992, Keith >included part from the norwegian composer Edvard >Grieg in one of his pieces; actually excerps from >"In the Hall of the Mountain King". At the end of EVERY ELP concert I've ever seen or heard, the last minute or so of the finale from Resphighi's "Church Windows" is played, followed by the overture from Resphighi's "The Birds." In addition, before the show on the 1992 tour, they played excerpts from Resphighi's "The Fountains of Rome" and "The Pines of Rome." Recordings of all of these popular program pieces are commonly available. I strongly suspect that "The Birds" and "Church Windows" are from a Columbia Masterworks recording, but I'm not sure. I picked up the remastered Victory releases of Welcome Back... and Brain Salad over the weekend. I gave them a test listen and thought I'd post a quick review. Welcome Back... --------------- Excellent. Although quite a bit of this album shows up on Return of the Manticore, and I have the Japanese CD release of Welcome Back... this was a good investment ($23.95 US) because the uncut version of Tarkus (vis a vis Return of..) is included. If anybody anywhere thinks that ELP was just another British synth band -- well, the live version of Tarkus will change their minds, IMHO. 8-) The recording is noiseless (vis a vis the Japanese release, which was just a CD pressing of the original [very noisy IMHO] vinyl). The Victory release is superb - kudos to the engineers ! Brain Salad Surgery ------------------- The improvements on Brain Salad are not as noticeable as Welcome Back... but it's better than the original CD on a track by track comparison. Also, there's no fade-out/in on Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression), which is quite welcome to my ears. Overall ------- If you had to buy only one of these, get Welcome Back... simply for the live Tarkus. It's among the best live performances of any band I've ever heard. Final Note ---------- It seems that in my area (Maryland, D.C.), only Brain Salad and Welcome Back... and Pictures... are available under the new Victory catalog. What I really want next is Tarkus. Of the original albums, Tarkus is the one most in need of remastering, IMHO. Well, that's it for my first post to the ELP Digest. Hope you enjoyed it -- if not, please route flames to /dev/null. ;^) Regards, --Randy Taylor ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Dec 93 10:26 GMT From: ronc@cogs.susx.ac.uk (Ron Chrisley) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Manticore ===== Date: Sat, 4 Dec 93 20:14:58 EST From: Brian=Podesta%IRD%UMASS@BANYAN.UMMED.EDU Subject: Return of Manticore // ELP News Service Info Major differences with the Atlantic Years set. The orchestra has been highlighted throughout the piece. It also seems as if Keddle Drums and Triangles were added to enhance areas. Could this be an effect of the Dolby Surround? It sounds as if they took individual tracks and repositioned them so as to highlight previously minor events. Strong reverb is apparent during sections of Greg Lake's phrases. How much of the set has been treated with Dolby Surround? I thought it was only Pictures (I don't have the set, only the promo sampler). Also, since they have a track from one of Keith's old bands (Hang on to a dream) and one of Greg's (21st cent), I assume that "Fire" is by TCWO Arthur Brown. Is that right? [ Editor's note: Yes, "Fire" is a song originally done by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. - John - ] I am disappointed, once again, with Palmer's boring drumming. If you just compare what he used to do on Gnomus with what he is doing now, you'll hear why. Ronald L. Last week our PBS affiliate here in Northeastern Ohio was running their semi-annual membership drive/telethon. During a Rolling Stones documentary, the announcer read off a list of other music specials that have been shown in the last year or so. Included in his list was Emerson, Lake and Palmer! Has anyone seen this on their PBS station? PBS affiliates don't always show the same things at the same time. Maybe this program will show up on some other stations around the country, and maybe I'll be lucky and they'll re-run it here. If they do, I might even send in a donation! :-) --------------- Bruce Mattingly Youngstown State University [ Editor's Note: It appears that some PBS stations have been showing the ELP "Welcome Back" video that is a documentary video released in conjunction with the Albert Hall CD last winter. The "Welcome Back" video was released by Strand Home Video but rumor has that they are out of business. I've only seen one copy in the Boston area since summer (and I bought for my brother for Christmas... shhh, don't tell him). It's worth seeing but beware, there's only one song that is shown in its entirety without voice over or interruption: the Black Moon video. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1993 17:21:17 0000 From: meenaghan@molbiol.ox.ac.uk To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: RE: ELP Digest V3 #19 I've just purchased a copy of the "Works Live" album. On the whole, this is obviously a more worthwhile effort than the original single album. The recording is excellent and the sound quality is consistantly high over the whole album. The highlight is undoubtedly "Tank", which I play at excruciatingly high volume, at least for the neighbours, whilst playing the Live'77 video. I've died and gone to heaven!!!! Personally, I would have given "Pictures..." a miss, and added "Pirates" and "Karn Evil 9 1st impression". I am impressed with "Abaddon's Bolero", and it sounded really exciting with the benefit of the full orchestral accompanyment. Greg's solo stuff was also worth listening to. I give it 8/10, with that couple of marks off for a poor version of "Pictures...", no "Toccata", and no "Rondo/America" medley to end. Imagine "Fanfare" in the middle of the first disc!!!!! Can't wait to finally get my hands on a copy of "Return of the Manticore". Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Keith's full recovery from surgery.
