It doesn't sound significantly better than 'In Concert'. I think that the problem is not so much with Victory Records as with the original source recording. I recall that Keith Emerson 'apologized' for the quality of 'In Concert' years ago in an interview in Keyboard Magazine. Regardless of it quality merits, I still am pleased with the release and happy that Victory decided to rerelease this live recording in the manner that ELP originally desired. I also purchased the new version of 'Brain Salad Surgery' in its limited-edition (whatever that is) digipak. Though I'm no fan of digipaks, I like how this one was put together and how it reproduces the feel of the original vinyl release. As far as sound quality, in a totally subjective A/B test with the Atlantic CD release of BSS, I felt that the Victory version sounded 'clearer' (i.e., better in my opinion) than the Atlantic's effort. I'm quite happy with it. I've been receiving the ELP Digest for the last few months but this is my first post here. I managed to pick up _Return of the Manticore_, _Love Beach_ and _Brain Salad Surgery_ (limited edition packaging) before deciding that I better save the rest of my money for Christmas presents for everyone else. A few quick impressions: 1) Love Beach -- I picked this up because it was there! As someone else mentioned, the new Victory releases are scarce as yet. (Note to those in the Boston, MA area: Lechmere in Woburn has had at least one copy of every album (except _Trilogy_ ) in the bins, while Tower and Newbury Comics in Burlington, MA has only had a few...the ELP section is overflowing, but mostly with Atlantic CDs). Well...back to Love Beach: I like this album much better now than when it was originally released, although the first four songs are still among my least favorite ELP pieces. "Memoirs..." is a truly fine composition. I've listened to this CD already more than I ever listened to the LP. 2) Brain Salad Surgery -- The packaging is truly awesome. I'm generally not a fan of "digipaks", since they tend to wear like LP covers did, but they did do a nice job with the split front cover and the mini version of the poster. The sound of the first four tracks is maybe marginally improved over the Atlantic CD, but Karn Evil 9 blew me away from the opening Hammond organ notes. The sound of the organ in the opening was much more mellow on prior releases. As others have mentioned, the elimination of the side break in the middle of the first impression is great -- IMHO, well worth the price of admission. 3) Return of the Manticore -- Since I'll eventually buy all of the Victory CD's, this will tide me over for a while. I especially like the new recordings (well, I could have done without this version of "Father Christmas", but it's not all that bad) and the unreleased tracks. It is enlightening to finally hear Gulda's Prelude & Fugue in their entirety and on their own. "Rondo" is an amazingly clean concert recording for its era ( a fine performace, too!). The biggest sonic change is in "Pirates", as has been mentioned by others...IMHO it's an improvement (not that the original was bad). I compared tracks on _The Best of ELP_ with this set. _Lucky Man_ sounded truly lifeless on _The Best..., while Trilogy was pretty close. In general, my only gripe with the Victory releases is that the longer pieces like Karn Evil 9 and Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman are given one track number, making it difficult to access the individual sections (anyone out there with a CD player that reads indexes? are there index numbers on the discs for that purpose?). I always used to complain about the Cotillion/Atlantic _Pictures..._ CD because "Nutrocker" didn't have its own track number, but from the back cover of the new CD it appears there are now 12 tracks on this disc...it would have been more consistent with the other releases to have two tracks, one for "Pictures" and the other for "Nutrocker". -- Shawn McCann ------------------------------ From: berg@boilerbob.corp.mot.com Subject: Re: Albert Hall GIF To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Thu, 16 Dec 93 18:37:56 CST HI I went looking for the Albert.Hall gif file. Basically, it seems as though Lake's singing voice is shot. When he speaks, he sounds OK, but when he sings his voice is weak and gravelly. Right before the show I was listening to the new CD version of Pete Sinfield's "Still". Lake's voice on the title cut is absolutely incredible. The difference is beyond night and day, it's closer to the difference between the Big Bang and the End Of The Universe! I hope that this is only a temporary condition. Someone should convince Lake to stop to take a vow of silence until his voice recovers. It depresses me that incredible voices like Greg Lake and Ian Anderson are gone while penny-whistle, fingernails-on-blackboard voices go on forever. -- Mathias ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1993 14:43:24 -0500 (EST) From: Shawn McCann To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: ELP on Arsenio Hall's show Last night I got home after 10:00. My wife had taped Seinfeld, so I watched it then turned to the local UHF channel that shows old Star Trek at 11:00. It was one I hadn't seen before, but nevertheless I fell promptly to sleep. The next thing I knew I was waking up to see ELP performing "Father Christmas" on Arsenio. I had totally forgotten that they were scheduled to be on, and I never watch the show...I hardly ever watch Star Trek since I have most of the series on videotape already...so it was by pure chance that I was even tuned in to the right channel...and I don't know what woke me up just in time to hear the whole song. Must've been Arsenio announcing them that did it. Anyway, it sounded to me exactly like the ROTM version. I get poor reception on that station, so I couldn't really tell if Greg was lip-synching, but if not then it was an amazing likeness to the recording, gospel choir included. So far, a much better show than Regis & Kathie Lee. Next came the interview. It was clear to me that Arsenio knew less about them than R&KL did. Arsenio didn't even pretend to be much interested in them. He asked lousy questions that didn't lead them anywhere. On the other hand, Keith didn't do himself any favors (favours?) by saying he didn't like Pearl Jam...made him seem out of touch...I have no opinions on Pearl Jam but he shouldn't have risked alienating anyone by naming names like that. Again Carl was the most interesting speaker, and had the presence of mind to say that he DID like Pearl Jam (read: you fool, Keith, you probably lost us a whole lot of sales there). I think the best show for them to appear on would be Letterman. I'm sure Paul & Band would appreciate them, and Dave is a much better host than Arsenio. -- Shawn McCann [ Editor's note: I too was confused by Keith's comment on Pearl Jam since he's not the type to bash other types of music. So, I played the tape again (this time with my brother who was seeing it for the first time). My opinion is that Keith did NOT say that he didn't like Pearl Jam but that, due to a mid-sentence interjection by Arsenio, it could seem that this is what Keith meant. Essentially, Arsenio asked about ELP's impression of the state of music today and Keith started to say that he wasn't too impressed. Then, Keith mentioned that his teenage son was into some things. At this point, Arsenio asked what his son "turned him onto" and Keith mentioned Pearl Jam. At no time is it exactly clear what Keith's opinion is but I doubt he would ever have mentioned a popular band like that in too harsh a manner. He's had plenty of time and space to slam other bands in numerous interviews and he never has. I also think that Carl sensed that it may have sounded like Keith didn't like Pearl Jam so he went out of his way to mention that he liked Pearl Jam. Kind of damage control on Carl's part. Unfortunately, Keith has never been that confortable talking on camera about generic things. He really only seems to get talkative with the press in detailed, music-oriented conversations (like the Keyboard interviews over the years). And Carl, of course, has always been the most comfortable doing the radio/TV interview and publicity stuff. Anyway, that's my impression of the Arsenio appearance. - John - ] ------------------------------ To: mathias@tarkus.ocis.temple.edu (mathias thallmayer) Cc: arnold Subject: Re: ELP on Arsenio Hall Date: Mon, 20 Dec 93 10:44:52 EST From: arnold >>> Right before the show I was listening to the new CD version of Pete >>> Sinfield's "Still". My remarks center around ELP's two recent TV appearances (Regis and Kathie Lee & Arsenio Hall). To me, they were like night and day. On Regis and Kathie Lee, the music was average and the bantering between ELP and R&KL was well, strange and disjointed. On A. Hall, the music was better (although Lake's voice still was very raspy) and the chat between host and guests was much more organized and informative. I liked Emerson's response to the question about today's music. I also don't like alot of new "rock" music (in fact, I am now heavy into country as well as rock). I think it is great to see these guys on TV and I can't wait to see them on Monday Night Football! I have yet to get the box set, but maybe Santa will bring it??? I was beginning to think I was the only one who noticed, having read the recent digests, and finding no mention of it. I also pray the condition is temporary. He sounded fine on Black Moon, but on Regis, Arsenio, and some of the new RotM cuts it is just a horrible rasping wheeze. Where it is not so noticeable is on the cuts with a lot of reverb and production. Geez, with this, on top of Emerson's surgery, it just reminds me of how old everyone (including me) is getting. There must have been an incredible push to get this new boxed set out to let Lake actually record in such a condition. I wonder if RotM will be ELP's epitaph. I read in the Feb '92 issue that the lyrics from "Mass" were 'The weaver in the web that he made.' This was enlightening to me, since *I* grew up thinking it was 'Though weaker than the weapon he made' which would be in keeping with the anti-war sentiment running through ELP music from "Lucky Man" to "Battlefield" to "Karn Evil 9 - Third Impression." There are a number of ELP lyrics I have been unable to transcribe, and my feeble efforts seem to be better than some I've seen. I've looked for ELP lyrics in the Lyrics Archive, but there aren't many and they seem to have mistakes in them. Could we make it a group project to make up a complete set of accurate lyrics? I'd be glad to upload what I have, and them perhaps those of you with better ears (and sheet music) can correct them? Also, I was disappointed that there are no more ELP GIFs available. On listening, I determined that it is in fact the Oct. 2, '92 Royal Albert Hall (London) show which was broadcast live by the BBC. The sound is therefore great. Packaging is good (band photos & pic disks); cues and timings are accurate; track listing is mostly accurate. The only bad note is that the show is incomplete. Disk 1 starts with the fading in of the Tarkus intro - we lose the Karn Evil 9 segment. The applause during the pause which Carl puts into his solo segues straight into the applause before the "Fanfare" encore - so we lose the concluding sequence of "Pictures". It's done neatly enough, but it would have been preferable if it hadn't been done at all. I know these bits were performed, and there is plenty of room left on the CDs to carry them, so I guess the recorder just screwed up. Did anyone get Victory re-issues for Christmas? I got the 2-CD _Works Live_, and I'm very happy with it. I can't compare the sound quality of it to the Atlantic CD _In Concert_, because I never owned that. I bought a used LP of _In Concert_ years ago, but it sounded so hissy that I almost never listened to it. So, needless to say, _WL_ is a huge improvement. The seven "new" tracks are "Watching Over You" (3:59), "Maple Leaf Rag" (1:13), "Fanfare for the Common Man" (10:55), "Show Me the Way to Go Home" (4:20), "Abaddon's Bolero" (6:03), "Closer to Believing" (5:29), and "Tank" (12:38). All are quite good, especially the first three. The packaging is the same as with the LP: the picture of the road crew from the LP sleeve is re-printed here (albeit much smaller), and the list of tour personnel is also here. I also bought _WBMFttStNE_ on CD. I had suffered for years with only as much of this as I could fit on one 90-minute tape, which I copied from a friend's scratchy LP version. I don't really recall everything about the LP packaging, but I think that it's all here. A picture of the band on stage, a great big 'E', an 'L', and a 'P' - on the LPs each letter occupied a space as large as the LP sleeve (remember, this was a triple LP, so there were 3 foldouts - 6 sides to fill with art, etc.), and a detailed tracklist with writing credits. And another note - the CDs are indexed, so that track 4 on disc 1, "Tarkus", is broken into 7 indexed sections. As for the sound quality, I'd say it's quite good, but as I said, I don't have an original copy to compare to. Regardless, it's certainly worth getting just for the performance - prime ELP. There are a few strange noises while Emerson is talking, just prior to "Jermey Bender/The Sheriff". Many issues ago, someone said that a roadie was setting up some equipment on stage at that point, so I just attribute those noises to that. I guess they could've got rid of 'em, but there probably wouldn't have been much point. (Unless they had also somehow deleted that "get crazy!" scream some guy in the audience lets out during "Lucky Man." I hate that.) The only thing I don't like about these reissues is the 2-CD jewel box. It's the size of a single CD box, which is nice, but the little ring that holds the CD in by the hub is of a different design. You can't just push on the center and expect the CD to drop out, you've gotta pull the CD out by its edges, bending the disk slightly in the process. Minor point, I know. Can anyone comment on the liner notes for the other various Victory re-issues (esp. _Works Volume 1_ - does it have lyrics?). I've heard that the re-issue of _Trilogy_ isn't up to the par of the other re-issues. That's good news for me, because that was one of the few ELP CDs I already owned (I had everything on LP & cassette). And is there a more up-to-date version of the discography than the one on cs.uwp.edu? That one is a couple of years old now. --/\/\\/\/()()|) ObCDPlayer: _Black Moon_ - ELP ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 4 Issue 1] ************************************
