Poor sound quality Question about song list on "The Atlantic Years" Keith Emerson on cover of new issue of Keyboard magazine... Prelude ======= Sorry for the delay since V4 #2. As is getting usual, I've been busy with work, home, and an atrocious winter in terms of my commute (thus less "Internet play time" at work). Thanks for your patience and special thanks to those of you who sent mail asking if the Digest was still alive due to my inactivity. It's nice to know that there are people out there who liek the ELP Digest so much that they notice when it DOESN'T show up. Also, please note the last news in today's edition. The latest Keyboard magazine has an interview with he Keith where he talks about his arm, the surgery on it, and his recovery. I've summarized it in this issue and point you to the magazine for the full text. Does anyone know whether Greg's first(?) solo album called "Greg Lake" is available on CD? This is album from about 1980 or 1981. The reason I ask is because I was going throught some of my records and came across a copy of it. Although it was not the greatest album ever done by any of the guys, I really enjoyed listening to it when I was in high school (mid-late '80's) and am considering getting it on CD if I could. It's from Mussourgsky's own Pictures at an Exhibition, namely the piece entitled "The Old Castle". It is the piece after the second Promenade, the one corresponding to Greg Lake singing "Lead me from childhood fears . . .". Mussourgsky's piece is played rather slowly in G-sharp minor. In "Pictures", it is definitely sped up, played in C minor, along with the bluesy I-IV-V progression and the blues swing feel. (I'm referring to the organ part). I've often wondered what ELP would have done if they played Mussourgsky's ENTIRE Pictures at an Exhibition. One missing piece I like is the one about two Jews, Samuel Goldberg and Schmuyle. I've thought KE could have something neat by assigning two different synth voices to represent each guy. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Feb 1994 16:38:55 -0700 (MST) From: "Alan J. Listening to this on RotM, made me appreciate the tune more than on vinyl. Greg's bass line is strong, & Carl's input is flawless. I didn't care for the rest of the album, I thought "Memoirs..." was just an attempt to re-create the popularity of storybook epics, such as "Pirates", & failed. (Much the same as Yes' Relayer LP, the first side was one long tune [can't recall the name] - this to me was an attempt to create another "Close to the Edge". I never can seem to get it loud and full like so may > other pieces. I have often wondered the same thing about several ELP songs, particularly "Tiger in a Spotlight" which was on Works II but I believe was recorded at the same time as Brain Salad Surgery. Perhaps working with a new set of studio people affected the recordings. Let us hope, though, that it is really the incompetent cheapskates at Atlantic that are at fault, and that the new Victory releases will be better. However, the sound quality of "Tiger in a Spotlight" is only marginally better on ROTM, so I believe in this case at least it must be the original studio tapes. :-( I went last weekend for my first "upgrades," and can report enthusiastically that they were well worth it, even though I had to special order the die-cut coveer edition of BSS. Not only was the sound cleaner and brighter, but they reproduced the ORIGINAL ARTWORK! I bought BSS, Tarkus, and Pictures and was immensely pleased. We should all support these new Victory re-releases: they are truly for ELPers by ELPers. If your local store still has any Atlantic CDs, ask that they be returned and replaced by Victory pressings. To my untrained ear at least, "Jerusalem" on BSS was VASTLY superior on the Victory pressing compared to the Atlantic pressing. This alone was worth the upgrade to me, since I love this song. Carl was quoted in the ELP News Service mailing that that is the song he wished they'd played more in concert. Apparently they played it early on, but it was banned in Britain as--get this-- sacreligious! (What can you say about the British government?) In conclusion, I give the Victory re-release of Tarkus ****, Pictures at an Exhibition ****1/2 and the reissue of BSS **** for the standard, ***** for the die-cut. My only real quibble is the lack of track indexes in Tarkus. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Mar 94 03:05:20 CST From: jhermann@home.interaccess.com (James Hermann) To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com I have noticed on Atlantic Years that the list of songs on the back is not quite what is on the CDs. Reply-To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Mon, 07 Mar 94 09:25:59 EST From: arnold Hi! Keith's on the cover of the latest (April 1994, I think) issue of Keyboard magazine (the USA edition, anyway) with the caption: "Will Emerson ever play again?". The article is an interview with Keith where they discuss the arm surgery he had last October. For anyone who wants a complete text of the article, I'd suggest you get yourself a copy. It's a pretty good interview though not much talk about things beyond his health. Here's the synopsis I can give without violating the Keyboard copyright: * Keith had an operation on his right arm in early Oct. 1993. The surgery was deemed necessary after Keith noticed difficulty in accuracy and strength in his playing (right arm/hand). These were problems with accuracy with even "simple" arpeggios (not just the "difficult" ones. * Keith's recovery is slower than they hoped. He is up to playing 2 1/2 hours per day (with breaks in the session). Tests that were to be held shortly after the interview should determine whether the surgery helped. * When Keith talks about having to "stop playing", it's more because he doesn't want to compromise on what level of playing he expects from himself. So, it's not like he is totally unable to play, he just still can't play as well as he expets himself to play. * Apparently, the next ELP studio album is all done. He has told his management that any tour can't start until ~August and there's a chance that he won't be able to tour. * In case recovery doesn't go as far as expected in getting his playing ability back up to par, he's re-thinking other career options which include a reneweed emphasis on film scoring and he's writing and autobiography whose working title is "Pictures". * Greg and Carl have been very supportive throughout the decision to get surgery, etc. Hope this story has a happy ending in the near future! - John - ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 4 Issue 3] ************************************
