"Pirates" itself could be called an "attempt to re-create the popularity of storybook epics" which failed...though not by me! ELP are in the overdubbing stage of their new, yet to be titled album. Keith Olsen is handling the producing chores. No song titles yet, but this time they're pulling a switch: instead of revamping a classical piece instead they've covered Bob Dylan's 'The Man in the Long Black Coat'. The album is slated for release late Spring or early Summer (May seems likely). The world tour will kick off with seven weeks in America starting on July 15; no dates are available yet. During this time the band plan on doing in-store appearances at local record stores. The tour will move on to Europe, Japan, and South America later in the year. Watch the ELP Digest for concert and in-store dates as they become available. A side note: no word yet as to whether ex-Yes guitarist Steve Howe will be opening for ELP as he hinted in my recent interview in Notes >From the Edge. I hope it comes to pass, giving them the opportunity to jam together (remember that Howe and Palmer were both in Asia, and Lake joined them for the 'Asia in Asia' Japanese tour after the departure of John Wetton). Again, I'll keep you all posted. Mike ------------------------------ To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com From: pal.gjortz@samfunnsmed.uio.no Subject: Theme on I believe in Father X-mas Hi fellow ELPophiles ! Though many find it upsetting that riffs from other works are sprinkled throughout ELP-related works, I find it fun to stumble onto the source of them. Also note that, although Keith is typically the target of these kinds of "complaints," I Believe in Father Christmas was first released (with the Lieutenant Kije reference) as a Greg Lake solo single back in 1975. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Mar 1994 22:33:53 -0500 From: pjones@saturn2.cns.ohiou.edu (Patrick Jones) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Response to Atl. Years Please forgive me if I sound ignorant or if I'm retreading worn ground, but I am new to this list and am trying to become used to what I am doing. I was reading in my intro version of the posted magazine that there was a question on the songlist on the Atlantic Years. The person wanted to know if the songs that were listed are in fact the ones on the discs. Well I must say that they are. For some silly reason, they used a different numbering system on side two than they did on side one. On side one, the separate parts of "Tarkus" and "Pictures of an Exhibition" were not counted as separate tracks. On side two, however, the different impressions of Karn Evil 9 were given separate track numbers. And rightly so I might add. I do not know if this will help, but I hope that I have been of some service. By the way, my friends (who are sometimes listeners to ELP) and I have listened to every track on this album and compared them to the ones that are on the individual albums and we can tell no difference. Like I said I hope this helps.-- Patrick Jones History Major Ohio University "I am The Ancient. I am The Land." In particular, I would like to know if Best Revenge exists on CD. Also, if there is a place in the San Francisco Bay Area that I could look for this kind of stuff, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Glenn Mandelkern [ Editor's note: Any readers who can help out here. I don't have Best Revenge on CD though I picked up "The Emerson Collection" (on Chord Records, I think) a number of years ago that has "Suite from Best Revenge" on it. Adams 7-5263" To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Classical sources in Emerson's music I have followed with interest the thread discussing Emerson's classical quotations. I don't recall anyone mentioning Prokofiev's The Love of Three Oranges or Respighi's The Pines of Rome, and I'm sure I've heard them. Keith seems to be most strongly influenced by Copland and Prokofiev. His Piano Concerto #1 and many of his film scores echo these influences in places. I was gratified to read in Keyboard magazine that even though it was not originally credited, ELP was paying royalties to the Bartok estate for the use of Allegro Barbaro on The Barbarian. Since, as far as I know, it has NEVER been credited, I hope they are doing the same for Prokofiev's estate for the use of Lt. Kije on I Believe in Father Christmas. The last I heard (mid-1992) a large symphony orchestra in Germany was planning to perform Keith's Piano Concerto in concert. At that time, Keith had been invited, but doubted he could attend because of the ELP tour. Does anyone know if this concert was held, and if so, what the reaction was? Was a recording made for release? I read with horror that Keith's playing days may be over. I hope that if he cannot play, he will at least continue to compose. It is his music that I appreciate the most! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Mar 1994 15:31:43 +0100 From: meenaghan@molbiol.ox.ac.uk To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: RE: ELP Digest V4 #3 Having a bit of trouble with the music retail business in the Oxford area in trying to find out when the new ELP album is being released. In summary, the latest tests show that Keith's arm has responded well to the surgery, that he expects to be able to perform in ~3 months, and that there is still reason to be optimistic about a US tour in the late summer. - John - ------------------------------ From: mathias@tarkus.ocis.temple.edu (mathias thallmayer) Subject: Emerson's recovery looks good.
