I am just now listening to Black Moon, and must report two "quotations" that struck me from the first time I heard the album: Close To Home: quotes the famous theme from Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto (you know, the one that inspired the song "When I was young, I never needed anyone, and making love was just for fun, those days are gone" from the 70's). Also, A Blade Of Grass opens with a figure that sounds a *lot* like the opening of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" by Elton John. By the way, I would not expect ELP to pay Prokofiev for the use of one little tune in a piece! To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Hi all, I've been lurking for a few months and the combination of receiveing the digest and finding a note about ELP in tonights paper prompted me to speak up. I live in Birmingham Alabama and started listening to ELP in 1974 at an age of 14. The minute I heard BSS was my first encounter with the power of music! Anyway, I enjoy the digest and its great to be around such knowledgable fans. You could imagine my double-take when I spotted this 5 x 7 picture of ELP in the music section along side the summer concert dates. Under the picture it said: "ELP will be performing some Brain Salad Surgery on Birmingham for the first time since the mid-70's". Actually, I saw them in '77 and '78 so that statement was not totally true (as a side note I would trade both gigs to have seen them in '74 when I missed them). The date is set for Aug 4th tickets go on sale July 9th and tickets cost only $10 !!! Did anybody catch the California Jam on TV in the mid 70's with ELP ? If memory serves this concert was shown in 2 or 3 weekly installments in place of The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack. To bad we didn't have VCRs back then. Anybody ever seen a NTSC copy floating around a record fair? I am 34 and since 1974 ( 20 years) I have been loving Elp music. I have a big collection of classical and popular music, and in general I prefer instrumental music. Unfortunately, the so called "progressive rock" (Elp, old Genesis, Yes, King Crimson), the old David Bowie, Talking Heads and Zappa are over. They were serious musicians; today in the popular sector we only have industrial production of mass marketed, empty and in general stupid music, expecially in USA. It is not a case if even the last one of Elp is fragmented in many short pieces. There is not sufficient public for long instrumental, highly arranged suites like in the old masterpieces of Elp, "Selling England by the pound (Genesis), "Close to the Edge" (Yes), "In the court of the Crimson King" and "Lizard" (King Crimson) and many of the Zappa works; and there are not musicians like the old Bowie, Talking Heads or even the Pretenders. In this situation, I strongly suggest all the fans of Elp to focus on the classical music of this century, and expecially on that which has evidently influenced Emerson: mainly, Prokofiev. There are also evident strong influences of Bela Bartok, in the first album and in Brain Salad Surgery, particularly in the drum use (the Toccata); but the "Sonata for two pianos and percussion'" and the piano concertos of Bartok for me are too experimental. On the other hand, the main influence on Emerson, Prokofiev, is complex and difficult, but absolutely melodic. The Piano Concertos n 1,2,and 3, the second movement of the 5th Simphony, the Lieutenent Kije, the 5th and the 7th piano sonatas and the prelude 7 op.12 are true masterpieces. If you like Emerson, you will like that music and feel how deep is its influence on Emerson. I suggest to start with the piano concertos. I think that Emerson is a modern musical reincarnation of Prokofiev, although partially corrupted by the logic of the industrial mass marketed music production. But at the origin of the long silence of Emerson, his relatevely scarce musical production, his lamentable evolution toward short pieces there is also the stupid separation between the s.c. serious music (the classical music) and the not serious music (the modern). Because of this stupid complex, people who like highly arranged music only consider classical music, disdaining the modern music as stupid noise. Let remember the people close in this complex that the Ouverture "Tannhauser" of Wagner, the 9th of Beethoven, the first 3 piano concertos of Prokofiev, and much of the today highly accepted classical music was on the beginning discarted and criticized as"barbaric noise". Substantially, the people that today like the Tannhauser and escape in front of Karn Evil 9 is the same people that one century ago liked Bach and escaped horrified in front of the Tannhauser. That to tell you that if there was more people available to buy highly arranged modern instrumental music like that of the seventies (NOT THE NEW AGE PASTICHE) today we would have more Tarkus, Piano Concert n1, Brain Salad Surgery-like music. Emerson is great because he has broken the separation between classic and modern, "serious" and "not serious" music. This great achievement, substantially, in terms of mass success, has not survived the seventies. I strongly suggest people who like Elp to listen to the above indicated music and of course, to the music of the former group of Emerson, the Nice (expecially "The Five Bridges Suite". Bye. Exactly what is the meaning and derivation of "Brain Salad Surgery"? This question recently appeared on alt.music.progressive. I suggested that maybe the song on Works Volume 2 with the same title can be listened to closely to get some hints. But I can't understand what some of the words to that song are, so that leads me to my next question . . . 2. Is there an ftp site somewhere containing all the lyrics to Emerson, Lake, and Palmer music? Thank you for maintaining this list. Receiving it is always a welcome surprise. By the way, where are you physically located (country, city, etc.)? I don't know if there's ever been a definitive answer from ELP themselves. (Other Digest readers may feel free to offer corrections or different interpretations.) re: Brain Salad Surgery "Brain Salad Surgery" seems to be some kind of slang for oral sex. But I think it was chosen because it was obscure and sounded cool, too. My guess is that the song Brain Salad Surgery was one of the not very serious ELP songs that probably arose from jamming and getting loose in the studio. The song itself didn't seem to fit the overall mood/pacing of the album that became Brain Salad Surgery but the title remained. It also seems to fit the imagery of the Giger picture depicted on the album cover. I can't remember where I first heard this interpretation of Brain Salad Surgery but it was a long time after the album was released, like maybe 5 years ago? re: lyrics I think someone has put some ELP lyrics on the ftp site where I put copies of the ELP Digest (ftp.uwp.edu). But it's not complete, as I recall. I don't know of any source for complete ELP lyrics but I'd be interested if anyone else knows a source (even a commercial source). re: me I live and work in the 495/128 area of central/eastern Massachusetts. Since I think many of the ELP Digest readers are also not that far from here, I sometimes dream of organizing an ELP day somewhere where we could meet, show videos, etc. Maybe sometime soon I'll actually find the time to try to organize this. What the heck was Love Beach?? I mean I know it is a location by Nassau but I mean---why did ELP stoop so low to put out such crap? Let alone have Emerson stand there with a giant lump in his crotch? They have never mentioned anything about the album nor did they play (thank God) on their 1993 tour but they did play Touch and Go from ELPowell. Date: Wed, 13 Apr 94 09:56:38 -0400 From: arnold@cyclades.ma30.bull.com Jim: Thanks for subscribing. re: Love Beach Keith Emerson did explain a bit of this during one of his interviews in Keybaord magazine a number of years ago. His explanation was that Atlantic had really just stopped working with ELP and assigned people to work with ELP who had no sense of ELP, progressive rock, etc. These folks kept trying to push ELP to become more commercial and to do shorter songs with more radio appeal. He tells the tale of gathering information and showing it to Atlantic trying to prove that the ELP audience wouldn't want this and that ELP probably wasn't about to be embraced by the typical radio market as the next Beach Boys. He regrets the silly cover picture. And, as is quite evident from the final sound quality, the band almost distintegrated in the middle. Greg and Carl left the Bahamas none too happy leaving Keith to try to deliver the album to Atlantic. (An interesting trivia point is that Love Beach remains the only album I've ever seen with NO producer credit. Greg wasn't there to do it and Keith didn't want to take "credit" for it. So, essentially, a set of studio demos (some more finished than others) got sent to Atlantic and actually released. I'm pretty sure that they all regret the way it turned ou. Hope this helps. Also, I must admit that there are parts of Love Beach I like though the lyrics on side 1 are pretty silly. However, I like Canario and Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman quite a bit. - John - ------------------------------ From: nmelodyh@aol.com To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Wed, 13 Apr 94 13:57:06 EDT Subject: Best Revenge The CD Dear J. This is the type of store that carries lots of CD's, especially imports. I saw one that was made in Italy of a 1972 concert. It had about 10 tunes. The back of the CD had Emerson kneeled over an organ. I think Tarkus and Jerusalem were on this. The words Emerson, Lake and Palmer were written in yellow against a black background. This was $25.99. The other CD I saw was ELP--Live at the Wiltern. I remember how badly I wanted to go to this concert in Los Angeles, about 400 miles south of where I live but had too many prior commitments as well as lack of cash. At least I was able to see them in San Francisco. Several rock stations carried this L.A. concert nationwide. As I remember, ELP was going to be the first band to try out this new addition to Dolby Surround Sound that could be carried through radio transmissions. This CD did have a heavy price tag--$47.99. Also, I saw several copies of a new version of Tarkus for $25.99. I don't remember the exact name of the process, but it is supposed to be like a mint condition CD for picky audiophiles. Again, I'm out of cash, it's April 14, one day before the worst day of the year. Maybe some other die-hard ELP fans can use their tax refunds to buy one or more of these. One last thing--my last ELP News Service letter said something like ELP is planning on releasing more sheet music. I really hope they go through with it. Although I know it is probably wishful thinking, I'd give anything if they transcribed "The Three Fates". But if they're going to do recent stuff, I'd really like to see "Changing States" written out. Glenn M. gmandel@megatest.com ------------------------------ To: arnold Subject: re: ELP tour status... I got forwarded some old copies of the ELP digest. Someone asked about Lake's voice and I don't recall an answer given. My guess is that his cig smoking has caught up to him. On the WBack video that came out last year he always seems to have on "cupped" in his hand. I have nothing against smoking--just an observation. I disagree with one reader's comment that his voice sounds good on Black Moon. It sounds like he went through puberty again. I saw them in concert in 2/93 in Minneaoplis and he always would take the easy way out on high notes and it did sound raspy. Thanks again for the Love Beach response I asked for last week. I can't understand even fans liking that album!! I am a die-hard fan and find that album simply repulsive! I spent my later teens making parody about that album it was so bad. As this is my first entry in the ELP Digest I am not sure what topics have been covered so far (due to what has been labeled "security reasons" we don't have any FTP access at my working place). However, I was fortunate to listen to a tape some days ago with unreleased material by various members of ELP. All was very good, both in sound quality, composition and playing. Does anyone out there now about more such material? What I heard was the following: A) Two big-band jazz tunes performed by Emerson and Palmer in 1972 with a big band, really heavy stuff with Emo on moog really jazzing it B) Unreleased Emerson instrumental with incredible keyboard from around 1989. Rumors have it that ELP (which means L and P) did not want that kind of "complex music" on the Black Moon album C) A different and much better version of "Changing States" with an almost Gentle Giant'esq way of changing the states between instruments, melody lines and harmonies. Discarded from Black Moon for the same reasons as above. I have also heard that their new album will contain this kind of complex music as all three members now seem to have discovered that that is what the fans love. By the way I have just read in a news magazine on CD's that the version of Pirates on "Return of the M" was a different one from that on Works 1 - and a much better one in" every aspect", except for a one tenth of a second slip. Finally: I have tried to type down all vide and audio recordings with ELP from concerts, interviews a.s.o. Some of the news: his hand is getting better; he's been working on an autobiography that will hopefully be finished soon; the new ELP album should be finished in about a month and will be very different from Black Moon; he had a very embarrassing meeting with Bob Dylan years ago (embarrassing because Dylan had no clue who he was); and he talked about his meeting with Ginistera about the recording of Toccata. Music: Live recording of Rondo with the Nice; a Charlie Parker big band number (Au Pravie?) with a great piano break; a fantastic song based on his soundtrack to "The Church". This was with Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee) and might be released on a solo album when the autobiography comes out.
