Prelude ======= Still making progress on the ELP Home Page for WWW/Mosiac users. When announced, it will have the complete set of back issues to the ELP Digest, some GIFs, etc. Watch the Digest for an announcement of its location coming soon. "In the Hot Seat" hasn't made its way to other readers yet. We're still awaiting its release. But it appears that there's hope that the ELP appearance at the California Jam (filed during one of the post-Brain Salad Surgery tours) might make it to American cable TV. Read on! Hi John! Just some more words on The Hot Seat before I leave for a three weeks holiday. I guess Dave's opinion may be kind of typical for old fans hearing the new music for the first time, and even for some more times. Myself, I keep on liking it, after the fifth or sixth hearing! Of course I have my misgivings as spelt out in the last Digest, but I still think it is a good record! I think what ELP has done is to make a more "American" kind of music (gospel, blues a.s.o.), which may not be what we like them to do. However, I think much of the material have great live possibilities if Emo ever gets his hand in order! And Carl wakes up. I can't do anything regarding the video, but I may have a fairly high quality copy of the audio. "In Concert" used to be simulcast in stereo on WPLJ FM in New York City. I recorded the entire California Jam performance of ELP on reel-to-reel tape. It is intermixed with the performance of Black Oak Arkansas (why ABC decided to do this, I have no idea). The reason I said "may" above, is that I no longer have access to reel-to-reel equipment, and have not listened to the tape in over 15 years. Since the tape is over 20 years old, it may have severely degraded. I would be willing to send this tape, along with a high quality metal cassette to someone who was willing to make a dub for me and send back the original reel-to-reel to me. Obviously you can make a copy for yourself. If you are interested, please send me information about the equipment you will use to make the copies. If I get multiple offers, I will prioritize by: 1) Quality of equipment used 2) Willingness to make other copies for others on this mailing list at cost + small handling fee. Note that I will only send this tape to one person, and I do not have the facilities to make cassette copies. John Marvin jsm@fc.hp.com [ Editor's note: I've got the equipment (e.g., the proper kind of reel-to-reel and cassette decks) to take on this task but, at times, I'm too busy to handle a lot of requests for tape dubs. So, if anyone else wants to handle this, please let John know. Also, if anyone could commit to the tape duplication task, I could easily do the transfer from reel-to-reel and submit a 1st generation copy to John and the person(s) who want to take care of requests for copies. If this is more to your liking, please contact John and me and we'll try to work something out. I have a question regarding this. Before I go on, let me explain a few things. I am a relatively late ELP bloomer (much to the disgust and humiliation of my sisters, no doubt), but better late than never; I'm making up for lost time, though. I am also the sort who gets very odd looks from clerks at record stores because there is such an odd mix in my bag (and yes, it's all for me, not for presents): The Tales of Hoffman, and Mendelssohn's Elijah, and Chuck Magione, and ELP, and Madonna, and Enya, and Michael Crawford, and Gordon Lightfoot, and Black Sabbath, and Dan Fogelberg, and Gregorian Chant, and John Michael Talbot, and the Camelot soundtrack, and The Nylons, and Dennis Doyle, and Belinda Carlisle, and Mark Romano, etc., etc., etc. On to my question: What the (fill in the expletive of your choice) is wrong with Black Moon? It doesn't have long epics on it? It doesn't have the same "sound" as BSS or Tarkus? It's not representative of 70's prog? What? And, along the same vein, what is the problem with Love Beach? Now before ya'll end the world in flames, remember that I'm a comparative innocent, and I haven't heard but three cuts from this particular platter: Canario, For You, and Memoirs... These three are great, IMHO. I have bought double albums many times just for _one_ song and ended up well satisfied with the effort. What is going to ruin my listening pleasure here, and why? I already know about the silly cover; I don't buy albums for the cover. To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com I just recently witnessed an ironic event: a more traditional ensemble playing arrangements of ELP (as opposed to the other way around.) Anyway, the Nite Express drum and bugle corp from Cedar Rapids, Iowa performed arrangements of three ELP tunes (none in their entirety though.) Their show consisted of Changing States, Trilogy, and Pirates. Of the three, Pirates was by far the best (the trumpets doing the intro melody the way it was on _Works_ was great!) but the others had their good points. The Changing States arrangement they did started with what seemed to be mass improvisation among the pit percussion and then the marimbas introduced the line that starts the piece on the album. They played mostly the first "verse" then jumped to the fugal part and jumped to the coda. Very well played however. Their arrangement of Trilogy consisted solely of the first two verses (including the piano intro.) This was a very nice arrangement with most of the brass providing a somber harmony to the trumpets' melody. The pitched percussionists were really burning it up on the intro (first entrance of the piano on the recording.) Pirates was a sort of collage of the instrumental parts from the original...very nice. Anyway, just thought I'd let everyone know (just FYI stuff) and if you get a chance to hear them, it is definitely worth it. By the way, if anyone is unsure of what a drum and bugle corp is, e-mail me directly and I can clarify. There was a question about the values and politics of ELP in 4.9. Greg is (or at least was) an environmental activist and worked on several environmental projects including restoring a creek or two. On the album Black Moon the song "Better Days" (one of my personal favs BTW) was inspired by Greg observing a dog as the passenger in a limosine on one side of Greg's car, while a homeless person lay on the sidewalk on the other side. Greg said he was appalled by this. "Black Moon" of course is about the burning of Kuwait during the Persian Gulf War. See also Greg's first solo album, especially "Nuclear Attack", "Retribution Drive", and "For Those Who Dare". (I can provide lyrics for anyone who wishes.) Greg is a very liberal guy. I must say that Greg is my all-time favorite musician, and his politics match mine very closely. I'm listened to ELP, and Tarkus constantly during a crucial period in my formative years. I had decided to give up on christianity just months before the release of Tarkus and "Infinite Space/The Only Way" was just perfect for me. One has to assume that Keith and Carl have similar views as Greg's lyrics have always been politically or social relavant. (Unlike some other prog groups whose lyrics are almost impossible to understand. Not mentioning any three letter names.) cheers! - Mark McCarron-Fraser mfraser@rs.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jul 94 19:56 BST From: ronc@cogs.susx.ac.uk (Ron Chrisley) To: alt-music-progressive@cs.utexas.edu Cc: j.arnold@bull.com, ronc@cogs.susx.ac.uk Subject: Problems with remastered Brain Salad Surgery AGH!!! Just got the remastered BSS from Victory (digipak version). Ok, so Jerusalem does sound clearer than on the Atlantic CD. This is not on my Atlantic CD! Is there any sign that Victory are aware of this, and are exchanging defective CDs for new ones? Are there any other such anomalies that are not on the Atlantic CD? Also, there is no tracking for the sub-sections of KE9. Dumb, IMHO. (And don't go on about using it with shuffle play in a way that presevres the integrity of the piece. I thought you might like to know how much I enjoy the Digest the more I read it. There's always a lot of interesting information and discussion, and everyone is generally so decent. I also read the newsgroup alt.music.progressive. I can't believe how much time and bandwidth they waste bagging on our heroes, and for things that often have nothing to do with music. I don't follow most of the other bands, so who knows what goes on there, but, man, it's a drag, sometimes, reading the ELP threads. The really disappointing part of it is, many of them can be very well spoken and insightful when they put their minds to it. It's amazing how catty they can be, and most of them are men. It is always such a relief to get back to the Digest!!! I guess is the thick skin developed while being an ELP fan back in the 70s and 80s when reviewers from Rolling Stone, Stereo Review, Village Voice, etc. would save their most vicious attacks for bands like ELP and Yes.
