In news letter V4 9 & 10 there's some talk about sheet music and albums. Here's some sheet music for drummers. Carl Palmer has a book called "Applied Rythms" published by Modern Drummer [06630365]. It contains lesson's by Carl and in the back some drum scores. It's mostly ASIA but includes a couple of pieces from E L P including Jerusalem. My only question after seeing the score is, HOW CAN HE PLAY SO FAST ? The second item is a list of albums that I have. Most of the readers already have them I'm sure, but It mite be helpful to new members. I have found the CD remaster's to be very good, in fact I think that Alantic has done a great job with all of their LP to CD remakes. I've been very busy lately, and haven't had much time to share any info with the subscribers, but I just saw some rumours about the new ELP release "In the Hot Seat" being cancelled in the US by glancing throught the digest. Well let me assure you that it has already been released in Japan! I forget the official release date but, I've had my copy for well over 10 days. The Japanese release also says that it contains a bonus track, not found on other releases. Since I don't have the disc in front of me, I can't give any details at the moment. They Polygram weasel said Victory has been doing VERY poorly lately with huge flops from ELP, Tin Machine, Triumph, and the most spectacular flop of all, the new Yes album. Sorry if I scared people with that "ELP album ain't comin' out" message, but that's what I heard from the same guy earlier. -- Anil ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Aug 1994 13:30:58 -0500 (CDT) From: "James J. James ------------------------------ From: GrtDeceivr@aol.com To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Sun, 21 Aug 94 17:23:12 EDT Subject: Backstage in Tokyo 1992 Reading a posting a few issues back from a reader who had met the band in Japan brought back great memories from my concert in Tokyo, Japan on Sept 16, 1992. I was going to Japan to work for a college program and then to spend time with my Uncle and his family. My visit to Japan was to last six months starting in June. I didn't learn of the Black Moon release until the week it was released which happened to be the week before my departure. I knew there had to be a tour to follow, but would the tour be in Japan while I was away from the States? While I was in Japan, I happened to be scanning newspaper when I came upon an announcement of the Japan concert dates! Even better, the Tokyo date coincided with the time I'd be living there. I contacted my uncle who said he'd get tickets for me. Getting to see ELP in concert was a dream come true. I'd only been an ELP fan for a few years then, and I thought I'd never get the chance. Sometime before the concert, my uncle said his friend was the promoter of the Japan shows and my two free tickets would be provided at the door! I didn't know where the seats would be but it sounded to good to be true. I remember talking with an old college and dreaming about going backstage and talking music with band. The dream became a reality when I received my tickets *and* backstage passes at the door! The seats were about half way back, but the auditorium was small (500 perhaps?). The show was spectacular and definitely worth three years of waiting. After the encore, I went backstage with my friend, and we made our way to the ready room to sit and wait. I had no idea what to expect. Would they come there? I spoke with Greg Lake's guitar technician at length and later, the manager. Then, with no warning, Greg Lake walked in. He walked straight up to me (there were only a few people there) and seeing my program on the table said, "Would you like me to sign that for you?" I must have said yes because it did get signed. Keith Emerson stopped by several moments later and graciously signed my program as well. I was conscious enough to remember to get out the camera I had smuggled in and get a few shots of me with KE and GL. Unfortunately, Carl didn't come back. To this day, I still find it hard to believe I was able to meet two of the people responsible for the most influential music in my life. James ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Aug 94 04:18:04 EDT From: alexm@vnet.IBM.COM To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Live at RAH In recent issues of the digest there has been some discussion of the Royal Albert Hall CD. Those of you outside of the UK may not know that the BBC actually broadcast the first RHA show live on FM stereo radio. I recorded the show, and of course there was much more to it than was included on the official CD and it was a 'warts and all' performance without the overdubs which are apparent on the CD. The full track listing is as follows; Opening Fanfare and Introduction Karn Evil 9 Tarkus (medley) Knife Edge Paper Blood Black Moon Close To Home Creole Dance >From The Beginning Still....You Turn Me On Lucky Man Honky Tonk Train Blues Romeo And Juliet Pirates Pictures At An Exhibition (inc. drum solo) Fanfare For The Common Man (medley) America, Rondo, etc. If anyone is interested in a copy of the tape let me know. I would prefer to work on a trade basis, but If you have nothing to trade I will consider copying it if you provide the tape and return postage. The show just about fills a C 100 tape. There is a small space at the end of side 1 (after Lucky Man) and the very end of the Fanfare medley is missing. Another item which may not have made it to general release outside of the UK is the Black Moon CD single. It is a three track effort featuring the single and album versions of the title song, and the previously unreleased bonus track, Blade of Grass. This last is only 2m 12s long and would probably fit into the gap at the end of side 1 of the live recording. If not, you may want to add this to the next digest. One more item of note. If A&E is truely bringing back ABC's Inconcert they have a performance of Rick Wakeman doing "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" that is very much better than the CD. The narration is drammatic (sometimes overly so), and the solos are much hotter! Watch for it! ELP fans! I recently picked up Lake's first solo album, "Greg". Of course I bought it on vinyl when it was new, but I haven't listened to it for sometime. If you're a Lake freak this cd is a must. There are some weak spots, but the disc contains a few tunes that are worth having. The album was recorded with Gary Moore and his band. It's a very rock and roll album. Which is a little surprising as, about the same time, Lake told Asia that he would not join them unless they did more progressive music, as that's where their audience was. It's hard to know who plays what on this album, or his second solo "Manourves". The other musicians are all credited at once: guitars:Gary Moore, Steve Lukather, Dean Parks, Snuffy Walden keyboards: Tommy Eyre, Bill Cuomo, Greg Matheson bass: Tristram Margetts, David Hungate drums: Ted McKenna, Michael Giles, Jode Leigh, Jeff Porcaro saxophone: Clarence Clemmons bagpipes: Willie Cochrane, David Milner Nuclear Attack (G. Moore) 4:31 A blistering rock and roll indictment of the nuclear arms race. Still effective if a little dated. (There are still plenty of nukes out there, so maybe not too dated.) :-0 Love You Too Much (B. Dylan/T. Benyon/G. Lake) 3:56 A Dylan song that Lake credits himself with revising. Tedious rock and roll. It Hurts (G. Lake) 4:30 First "my baby left me" tune. Some accoustic guitar at the beginning sounds like Lake. This one features a nifty guitar solo at the end. It may even be Lake playing the solo, but it could just be one of the studio musicians mimicing Lake's style. One of the better tunes on the CD. Black and Blue (G. Lake) 3:58 Another "my baby left me" tune. This one is forgetable. Retribution Drive (G. Lake/T. Benyon/T. Eyre) 5:04 The best, and longest, tune on the album. Solid lyrics urging political activism. This is a another rock and roll tune with just the slightest nod towards prog-rock. Storm clouds panic, and rage outside And if you ignor them, they'll find where you hide None of our problems, will lie on their side Lost in a landscape, only the lonely survive just to stay alive The Long Goodbye (T. Eyre/G. Lake/T. Benyon) 3:59 Still another "my baby left me" tune. This one sucks. The Lie (G. Lake/T. Eyre/T. Benyon) 4:45 Yet another "my baby left me" tune. This one is a solid rocker with good lyrics. Someone (T. Eyre/G. Lake/T. Benyon) 4:11 In concert Greg said that this was a Tommy Eyre tune, though on the album Lake and Tony Benyon are listed as co-authors. This song features Clarence Clemmons (of the E-Street Band) on sax. It's a sultry jazz/ blues tune replete with disturbing lyrics. I like this one a lot! Someone's got a lover and someone's got a gun Someone's havin' nightmares while others havin' fun . . . Someone's on the rooftop trying hard to jump Really needs a long drop so his heart can pump . . . Someone's takin' tablets to see them through the night Someone's got a suntan from an endless flight Let Me Love You Once Before You Go (S. Dorff/M. A. Leiken) 4:18 Don't even listen to this one. It's a sappy Steve Dorff/Molly Leiken tune. Really terrible. For Those Who Dare (G. Lake/T. Benyon) 3:51 Overtly political lyrics, could be taken as support for guerilla insurgents. My guess is that this is about the FMLN or maybe IRA. This is NOT a rock and roll tune. It features military snare drums and bagpipes. This is a good song, one of my favorites on this CD. Hands are damp muscles cramp skill explodes with practised timing And there's freedom for those who dare Liberation for those who care Victory for those who dare Overall, don't expect an ELP-like album here. If you listen to tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, and 10 you have a short, but decent album. If anyone is interested, I'll review "Manouvres" in a future issue. I'll be there I'll be there I will be there! - Mark McCarron-Fraser [ Editor's note: I'd just like to say that I like "Let Me Love You Once". Also, I think "For Those Who Dare" may just as likely be in the vein of the lyrics of "Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman". That is, not necessarily about a particular group but more the British spirit that carried the British through World Wars I and II, the Falklands, etc. I think the motto of the British Special Forces is something like "Who Dares, Wins" and I think there references to this kind of thinking in many Lake and Sinfield lyrics.
