ELP Jokes Re: RE: ELP Digest V4 #14 (re: sheet music) Triumvirat Info (requested in a previous issue of the Digest) ELP Digest stuff (more on sheet music) Hot Seat UK Release Date (Sept. 26) [ ELP Digest administative info is now located at the end of each Digest. ] Prelude ======= Yowza. I go on business trips for 2 of the last 3 weeks and my ELP mailbox is pretty well full. This will be the first of 2 or 3 issues of the ELP Digest that empty out the backlog. Sorry about the delay. I'm just about ready to move my ELP mail from my "work" e-mail account to my "own" e-mail account. I'll send a notice when the e-mail address changes. Also, I'm sorry that the notice of the "In the Hot Seat" UK release date is not more timely. (See the last note in this edition... it was Sept. 26). It's not that I didn't think it was important. But, I was busy with work and managed to fly back from a trip just in time for my daughter's birthday on Sept. 25 and then had to leave town again before I got an issue out. Just a long-winded way of saying that I'm trying to to discriminate "importance" of news on any kind of geographical boundary. I try to treat news as news and, as a truly international publication now, I am trying very hard not to consider North American news as more worthy of a "special edition" than other parts of the world. Sorry for the delay. See the show, - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Sep 94 10:14:32 PDT From: mfraser@rs.com (Mark McCarron-Fraser) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Guilty Cc: mark@uunet.uu.net Dear ELP fans - Oh my! I didn't mean to upset anyone with my review of Lake's "Greg". Let's be clear here. Any review is naturally the opinion only of the reveiwer. Hopefully the reviewer is familiar with the body of work of the artist in question and preferably a fan. (I don't care what heavy metal fans thinks of ELP, Renaissance, and so on.) So while some of my comments were critical, let me state catagorically, ANYTHING BY ELP OR ANY COMBINATION THEREOF IS INFINITLY BETTER THAN MAINSTREAM SCHLOCK. Also, I should fess up to having a bias against "silly love songs". I mean I like a few, but oldies really irratate me. I'm working on a review of "Manoeuvres", Lake's second solo effort. Personally, I think Manoeuvres is more uneven than Greg, but the good songs are better than the best songs on Greg. I think we'll need to start a letter writting campaign to Chrysallis to get them to release it! (I need to replace my phonograph turntable ;-) so I can listen to all of "Manoeuvres", I only taped part of it.) Just in case anyone should think that my comments on Greg are mean spirited, making me guilty of "doing the nasty critics work for them", I'm writting only for the Digest. Only ELP fans will see this. If I were writing for the mainstream press my review would be very different. - Mark [ Editor's note: I know I didn't take offense at the review. We all have opinions; that's no surprise. I like to read about what others like, don't like, etc. For instance, over the years it's become obvious that some ELP fans really like things like "Pirates" and other wished that ELP had stayed a bit closer to the direction started in "Karn Evil 9". I like both and have always enjoyed what others had to say about what does and doesn't work for them. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Sep 94 10:48:07 PDT From: swilcox@netmgrtst.tti.com (Steven Wilcox) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: KE9 Sheet Music Count me in, I'd love a copy ------------------------------ From: CJack486SX@aol.com To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Thu, 15 Sep 94 18:17:56 EDT Subject: ELP "Hot Seat" CD >From all the mail I've read, I'd like to know just where I can find the new "Hot Seat" CD in the Seattle, Washington area. One guy said he read it in newsletter called Progression which was distributed at Yesfest East. I think he said there was an interview. Another person said they heard this from two associates of Emerson. If I find out any more details I'll let you know! Thanks very much for this fine issue of ELP Digest. Gee, I never expected to find such a quality document on one band. It's obvious I am part of an already successful following. Does an NTSC VHS video exist of Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends? If so, how's the audio & video quality? Thanks again for a great read!! The first album, "Mediterranean Tales," was never released in the US. It came out in 1972 in Germany on Harvest 1C 062-29 441. The band was: Hans Pape - bass, vocals Hans Bathelt - drums Hans-Jurgen Fritz - keyboards, vocals Side one was a long piece, "Across the Waters" and the other side had three songs. Next was the band's 1973 US debut, "Illusions On A Double Dimple," which was clearly their finest work. Helmut Kollen replaced Hans Pape beginning on this album and Fritz dropped the Hans. I saw the band play in 1974 at the Shrine Auditorium. They were third billed below top billed Jefferson Starship and Fleetwood Mac (neither of which I like). Triumvirat opened with "Across the Waters" and followed with the entire "Illusions" album played in order, perfectly duplicating the record. No encore and they were gone. They didn't talk at all. Kollen never spoke English. In 1975, in support of the "Spartacus" album, they were to play at the Santa Monica Civic in support of Mahogany Rush (not the better known Rush). The show got cancelled at the last minute as Kollen had problems with his draft status and he couldn't leave West Germany. (I have a internal Capitol memo regarding this LP if anyone wants to send it to me, E-mail me your address. It's no big deal, so don't expect much). In 1976 Helmut Kollen was replaced by Baryy Palmer on vocals and Dick Frangenberg on "Old Loves Die Hard." This was the last decent Triumvirat album, IMHO. Note that the German EMI-Electrola C 062-29 622 album cover is completely different from the US version. No mouse, no picture. Just artwork and individual head shots of the band members. In 1977, Helmut Kollen died (May 3rd) and there was a posthumously released Helmut Kollen solo album which wasn't too good, but Jurgen Fritz plays keyboards on the album and he produced it. The album was released in German on EMI Electrola 1C 064-32 465 and is called "You Won't See Me" and has a weak cover version of The Beatles song of the same name. The next two Triumvirat albums were "Pompeii" in 1977 with a new drummer and bassist and in 1978 they released "a la carte" which was so bad that no one is "credited" on the album, except for songwriting credits. If they put out any more albums, I didn't care at that point. Hope this helps you out. *********************************************************** Sent via Earth Spirit Online - The Environmental Network - Los Angeles, CA 24hrs - 14.4 kbd, v.32 bis - GUI for MAC/Windows - (310) 264-4785 for more information send e-mail to: info@earthspirit.org *********************************************************** ------------------------------ From: A3D3@aol.com To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Mon, 19 Sep 94 13:56:23 EDT Subject: ELP Digest stuff -->[ Editor's note: Count me in!
