STOP THE PRESSES!!! I've received 3 or 4 (maybe more) mail messages today saying the "In the Hot Seat" has been released in the US (Canada, too, I think) and is available in stores. So, thanks to all who sent that news to me (and it was news to me). I'll look forward to emptying out the ELP queue next time, maybe. I expect people's comments about ItHS to be coming in, too. I'll try to keep up! - John - [ Administrative information is no located at the end of each Digest. ] ------------------------------------------------------------ From: bjorn-are.davidsen@s.televerket.tele.no To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com (Non Receipt Notification Requested) Subject: In The Hot Seat and other possible news, as well as some comments The Bi-Monthly Journal of Progressive Music - Progression - has in their latest issue (July-August 1994) the following on ELP: "The new studio album from Emerson, Lake & Palmer, In The Hot Seat, was released in Japan on Aug. 3, although a firm release date for the United States has not been set. A Victory spokeswoman said it probably will come out sometime in October, following aborted release dates of July 26 and Aug. 23." Then Progression reports that the Japanese edition contained as bonus - besides the Pictures version from RoTM - "an instrumental by Keith Emerson entitled 'Hammer It Out'". After giving the song titles Progression goes on to say that "Early words from sources close to the band is that Emerson is not pleased with the performance. Critics are saying it sounds too much like a Greg Lake solo album as opposed to a group effort. We shall see. Speaking of ELP, Griffin Records here in the states plans to release a video of vintage concert material this fall. No details at press time." The report on Keith being not pleased is quite new to me! After having heard In The Hot Seat about 30 times I think it is much better than I thought after hearing it two times, and as I reported on in some length in an earlier Digest. The latest newletter from David Terralavoro (his newletters and every back issue of "Fanzine for the Common Man" is HIGHLY recommendable!!!!) contains a VERY positive review of ItHS! There may of course be a point in ItHS sounding a bit like a Lake solo album, however it is MUCH BETTER than any of his other ones... To upgrade my own review I would say that of the songs I found a bit simple and/or boring, I now think that DADDY is one of Lake's best songs ever (and NOT boring) HEART ON ICE is interesting, but tend to draw out to long with too little progression of the melody. And the lyrics should have had a meeting with Occam's razor. GIVE ME A REASON TO STAY is still boring, however is the only one on the album that I plain simply can not bring myself to like, as it is far to middle-of-the-road with no progression at all whatsoever, no sir. It reminds me too much of a Greg Lake solo album... GONE TOO SOON is still a bit too poppy, but has it's good sides STREET WAR has grown on me and I like it much All other songs are more or less GEMS, especially HAND OF TRUTH (VEEEERY goood!) ONE BY ONE (greeaaaat!!!) TWIN LINE (very funny and catchy) MAN IN THE LONG BLACK COAT (perhaps the most emotional (in a positive sense) of all of ELP's pieces, even if not very much progressing) CHANGE (goood!!!) Does anyone know anything more about this Griffin Records thing - vintage videos and all?!? I just can't wait!! The ensemble that worked here in Denver (I assume a local assembly of musicians - I don't know if the circus travels with their own band) did quite a nice job of it. It was definitely keyboard intensive, with the brass jumping in on the breaks in-between sections. In my opinion, it was lifted pretty much from the ELP version (of course, lifted from Copeland). Somebody wrote in to an audiophile mag and said that one of the recent MoFi LP releases was not at all what they expected and sonicly was much like the substandard cover. It was either Tarkus or Atom Heart Mother. Well, the Tarkus LP cover is undeniably substandard; that is true (cc to MoFi on that point), and even more so is the LP cover for Atom Heart Mother. Both are rather dark and grainy. Sorry, but that is the fact of the matter. MoFi LP recordings are generally great treasures and deserve markedly better presentation. I regard this company's LP products very highly and hope they will maintain the highest standards. I would LOVE to see them increase the flow of LP material too. Lastly, if one were readily available, I would be interested in buying a previously-owned Japan LP of Tarkus. They opened for Supertramp on the Crime of the Century tour. And indeed it was the same line-up that plays on the Spartacus album. A very small venue too: The Spokane convention center across from the Opera house. Possibly 300 or so people crammed into a very small place, where the stage was on a very simple plaform of risers. Trimuvirat's stage props were the black silhouttes (sp?) statues which are shown on the inner sleeve of the album. The group showcased the entire album (in order: from start to finish); very well played! Jurgen was quite good as I recall. They don't do shows like this anymore, that's for certain! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Oct 1994 12:06:08 -0500 (CDT) From: GAGLIANIW@VMS.CSD.MU.EDU Subject: elp news in Milw Sentinel To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Greetings fellow ELP fans! A short piece in the Milwaukee Sentinel, dated 10-13-94: The rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer is donating profits from its new song "Daddy" to a rescue center for mising children. Greg Lake said he was inspired by a TV report on the center established by Robert Wood, whose daughter, Sara Anne, was kidnapped and killed last year. "I saw it on 'America's Most Wanted' TV program," Lake said Wednesday. "The story wasn't so much about Sara Wood but more about her father, who despite his grief and suffering, he set up this foundation." "As the father of a young daughter myself, it struck home and I thought maybe I could do something myself." "Daddy" is on the rock band's new album, "In the Hot Seat," due in stores next week. Also , Lake will give the center $5000. There you go -- great job, Greg. BTW, this is my first message to the group. Will post more in the near future. They weren't mentioned for the reason I expected, though... It seems the group is donating all royalties from the song "Daddy" off the new album "In the Hot Seat" to the Sarah Jane Wood Rescue Home for orphaned/ runaway/abused children. Greg Lake personally kicked off the fund raising with a $5,000 check! So lets all go out and buy the album (as if we needed an excuse) and support a good cause! +--------------------+ | Peter C.S. Whetmore: Hello again! Now that "In The Hot Seat" has been released in Europe and I am the proud owner of the CD, I would just like to say that the overall sound quality is superb and a big improvement from my promo cassette! And to put the record straight - even THIN LINE sounds much better now and there is some nice keyboard work by Keith on there which I'm actually beginning to really enjoy! The backing singers are another story, though - I still think they are out of place and totally unnecessary!! But hey - apart from that, what a nice improvement!! I would like to back Bjorn Are in what he mentioned in an earlier digest, abour buying the new album for relatives and friends as presents! We want it to sell well, so all diehard ELP fans out there please bear that in mind when buying Xmas presents!! Thank you!! Liv G. [ Editor's note: I think there's a lot of value in recognizing the high level of interest this group has in ELP sheet music! So, here it is. ] I am very interested in any ELP sheet music obtainable. We have a band working out of Allentown PA that features ELP, Asia, Yes, Genesis, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan and other progressive music (mostly from the 60's and 70's). We do play a few 80,s and 90's pieces that we feel are worthy of being placed in a show with the other matrerial, but very few. The object of the band is to improve musicianship and to perform approximately once a month for fun and pleasure. We also play and or intend to play some progressive jazz: J.L. Ponty, Return to forever etc... Plucking this type of music out by ear, note for note, is painful at times when putting a four hour show together. Even easy piano transcriptions help. I do have one ELP book (contains Take a Pebble, Trilogy ...). I also sent for Dan Barretts transcription. Please keep me in mind for anything that becomes available. I would love to get my hands on Pirates, Tarkus and anything of that nature. Thanks! On Tuesday October 25 1994, Greg Lake will be in Litchfield New York to personally donate $5,000 at the Foundation's headquarters. ADDITIONAL CD IN STORES: Perusing 'Record Town', I came across a CD put out by Polygram which has Pictures (live - 1971) as well as Jerusalem, Hoedown, Toccata and Lucky Man. The picture on the front is from '77 Works tour, of ELP standing in Chicago's Soldier Field Stadium. It looked a little chincy - the price tag $7.99, not at all bad for a CD, but you have to wonder if and where any quality has degraded. I went to the store yesterday to look for the new ELP CD and no one seemed to know ANYTHING! What's the deal? I'm going to call Warner Bros., who I understand is the new distributor. Anyway, while I was looking through the ELP selection, I ran across an Emerson CD I hadn't seen before. A Japanese import and rather overpriced at $32, but hey, I was desperate..... Here is the track list: BEST WORKS COLLECTION / KEITH EMERSON Inferno ........................ 2:55 Hello Sailor parts 1,2,3 ....... 8:36 Cigarettes, Ice, etc. .......... 2:50 Prelude 24 (Bach) .............. 2:21 Playing for Keeps .............. 4:19 Wha' Dya Mean .................. 5:00 Candice ........................ 3:36 Petites Litanies de Jesus (Gabriel Groulez) ........... 4:15 Taxi Ride ...................... 2:11 The Church (main Theme) ........ 3:56 Variatios [sic] on "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (trad) ... 6:10 Dream Runner ................... 2:38 Elisa's Story .................. 1:07 Green Ice ...................... 6:05 The liner notes are all in Japanese, so unless I can find a Japanese student willing to translate, I can't tell you much more (except that in Japanese, "etc.", "24", and "EL&P" are "etc.", "24", and "EL&P" respectively). Overall I was rather disappointed. The sound quality was not very good (not up to "The Emerson Collection" standards) and of course several tracks are the same as on "The Emerson Collection." In addition to "Inferno," "Hello Sailor," Playing for Keeps," and "Candice," "Dream Runner" is the same as "The Dreamer," and "Elisa's Story" is a variation on "Inferno." "Cigarettes" is a nice jazzy piece, and "Green Ice" is reminiscent of "L.A. Nights" off side three of "Works Vol. One." "Prelude 24" was a bit new-agey for my taste. Perhaps my favorites were "Taxi Ride" and "Variations," although I could hear very little reference to "O Little Town of Bethlehem"! For those of you who have been DYING for a reason to join the BMG Compact Disc Club, here it is: I just got the latest flyer, and they have expanded their selection from ELP. They always carried the Atlantic "Brain Salad Surgery," and "The Atlantic Years" when it came out. Now they have the following Victory releases: 207171 Return of the Manticore 105672 Emerson, Lake, and Palmer 105673 Tarkus 105674 Pictures at an Exhibition 105675 Trilogy 105676 Brain Salad Surgery 205678 Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends 205684 Works Volume One 105687 Works Volume Two 105688 Live at the Royal Albert Hall No mention of "Black Moon" or "In the Hot Seat."
