King Biscuit Flower Hour ItHS Review (in the press) EL--Who? [ Administrative information now appears at the end of each Digest ] Prelude ======= As in the last issue, I've "front loaded" this one with some of the more topical items of interest. First, there's a little follow up information on the Special Edition I sent out a few days ago. Then, I thought people would want to know what became of the Keyboard concert. And then I heard about a possibility of an "Isle of Wight" concert being discussed for this summer. (For newer fans, the Isle of Wight concert in 1970 was the first "big gig" by ELP who individually were then better known as former members of The Nice, King Crimson, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.) I'm gradually making way through the backlog and will continue to get these issues out to you. Now that I'm settled in with a new computer setup, things should be more responsive than they have been since I changed jobs in November. I attended the Keyboard 20th Anniversary Concert on 20 January in Anaheim and, I am sad to report, Keith Emerson did _not_ perform. He apparently had some sort of schedule change, and was at the time of the concert actually flying in from London. I heard later that he had arrived into town at around 8:30pm. Keith was scheduled to make an appearance at the NAMM show on the 21st (whether a performance or just an autograph session was unclear)...however, since the show is not open to the public I was unable to get in to check that out. Admittedly it was quite a bummer that Keith did not perform at the concert, but it was nevertheless a great show! ~~~Suzanne ------------------------------ From: bjorn-are.davidsen@s.hk.telenor.no Date: Mon, 30 Jan 1995 10:01:11 +0100 To: John E Arnold Subject: Isle of Wight IMPORTANT MESSAGE! As some of you may be aware of there are plans for a 25th anniversary of the Isle of Wight festival. According to a press notice in yesterdays Norwegian Papers this is being put together by two competing organisers. The first one is Paul King who promises to get some of the original artists (from the papers list of Hendrix, the Doors, the Who and ELP, some seem more available than others...)! The other ones are John and Ray Foulk who put emphazis on having the festival at the same site as last time! Woodstock 94 all over? I don't have the adress to this Paul King. However, if anyone has it, please make it available to us all, so we can put pressure on him getting ELP to attend! Perhaps such an invitation is what's needed for Greg and Keith to make up any unresolved tension and start progressing together again! And this may even get the Isle of Wight video (and a (double?) CD?) out in the shops. Cross your fingers folks! Hi, fellow ELPophiles ! The sunday newspapers here in Norway are telling about two competing planned follow-ups of the Isle of Wight festival, saying: "(Isle of Wight festival) which assembled over 250 000 expectatores, which heard among others Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Who and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. (One of the competing organizers) Paul King has promised to assemble some of the original artists....." (a very free translation by me !!) Well, of the mentioned artists, we all know what happened to the first two first, and the Who hasn't actually been best buddies for the last decade or more. So what about those last mentioned ????? Has anyone, especially some of our British friends, anything more on this ?? If ELP is showing up, and Keith is able, this might have a heavy influence on the vactation plans this year !! The January issue (40-60 pages) will contain "an in-depth interview with Greg Lake" where he "talks about the band's new album, In the Hot Seat, gives his assessment of Keith Emerson's arm injury, and expounds on ELP trivia down through the years". And in a later issue in 95 there will be an interview with a certain Carl Palmer. So subscribe folks to John Collinge, Editor; Progression, Dept.P, P.O. Box 7164, Lowell, MA 01852 USA A one-year subscription (four issues) in the US, Puerto Rico and Canada is $18. All other countries $23. A sample issue is $3 U.S.-Canada, $4 elsewhere. Perhaps Greg himself will help us clarify his standing on the issue of their (or his) seemingly more positive attitude toward Christianity (I guess that would be even better than having us voting on it...). However, I guess that is one of these things one seldom is talking about in those kind of interviews. Re: Does E need L or P Definitely, yes! IMOH ELP is (or has been) one of those groups where the matter of synergy has been the most obvious. I mean, what have either E, L og P done outside of ELP that can stand favorable comparison? Undoubtedly E is the most talented musician and composer in the group! However, not even Nice in their most glorious moments comes close to the five first ELP albums. I think the only thing Emerson have done solo that could have been included on their fab five albums is Mater Tenebrarum (please correct me if I have overlooked any real gems!) which would have made a great bonus track on the remastered Brain Salad Surgery. Re: Emerson the only one still hungry? It's difficult to say if E is more hungry than L or P at the moment. At least it may be they are hungering after different things! Even if Lake went around proclaiming during the BM tour that ELP's aim was to make 15 minutes concept pieces popular again, it seems he is rather comfortable with the ItHS type of music. And Carl seems happy with the Asia kind of thing. Keith, however still wants to make long (and complex, I hope) pieces, which is what I personally hunger for! BTW, Michel Foisy, I promise never again to tell the Digest that I still like ItHS, that is has grown in me and that I feel it to be rather good. However, to avoid any kind of misunderstanding let me say - as I think I have done a couple of times before - that this is not thet kind of music I would want ELP to make in the future!!! Far from it! Back to Brain Salad, please! What really happened during their break in 1975-76, besides houses burning and all that? Re: Lake and lyrics As a foreigner to the English language it took me years to really understand that Lake (and Sinfield) may not be among the greatest poets in English history. However, I think that is true for every rock poet (OK, Dylan or Cohen or sometime Waters and one or two others may be exceptions)! To me the great thing about Lake (and PS, except for that unmentionable 78 album) is their ability to convey images and emotions like no other rock lyricists. I love Gentle Giant, Yes, Gabriel and King Crimson (and have been listening to their music and lyrics) for more than twenty years and the truth is that they simply do not give me the same impression as Lake on the first five ELP albums. I mean, take Tales or Foxtrot or Larks Tongues, even if weird and wonderfull words, what is there in them to be compared to KE9, Pictures or Endless Enigma? Yes (or Jon Anderson) was - and is - not of this planet, Gabriel was (in the early seventies) too surrealistic, Crimson mostly into interesting and moving moods, while GG even if building on authors like Rabelais seldom managed to express the same intense images and feelings as Lake. But then again, I am a foreigner to English! I wouldn't say that this, or any other topic of discussion, was better, or worse, than anything else that appears in the Digest. That's part of the charm of the Digest: it's a forum to dicuss whatever it is about our heros that we want to dicuss, even if we beat it to death. ItHS was a much-anticipated (for the most part), much-postponed (at least here in the States) event; well, if you look at what Victory hasn't done for it, I guess you have to call it a non-event. Those of us who are hard-core, old-time ELP fans, or who are hard-core prog fans, were hoping for a return to the sound of old; there doesn't seem to be a concensus about whether they got it. I find it fascinating listening to their points of contention even though I don't agree with a lot of it. Those of us who are hard-core, not-so-old-time ELP fans were hoping for a number of things (I'm speculating here), more so than the old-time fans, I think. I know I was hoping for an album I could listen to more than once. With the exception of a certain number (which I won't get into here), I got my wish. Others have strongly-held, differing opinions. I also enjoy hearing their views. With an album, there aren't too, too many conclusions at which to arrive, once all the expounding is done: either you like it, or you don't, or you fall in between. The similarities in this vein are inescapable. On the other hand: > This is what this mailing list is all about, sharing new information > and personal experiences with ELP!!!! Keep them cards and letters comin'!! ItHS will settle down to a dull roar, and who knows what someone will think of next! Sla/n, Mo!
