Sorry for the continued delay in clearing out my backlog of ELP Digest material. I've got enough stuff for 2 or 3 more Digests in my queue. These items are old enough that I'm sure most of the writers are getting frustrated at not seing their comments yet. Well, after a few weeks of general chaos (including a computer upgrade!), I'm going to commit some serious time this week to clear out the backlog by the end of next weekend. So, you'll be getting a few extra Digests soon and I'll apologize in advance for cluttering up your mailboxes more than usual. I'm also breaking an unwritten rule in this Digest and including a very large message that might be better suited for the Web Site. The mail message contains the lyrics some of our fellow readers have deduced from the "In the Hot Seat" album. Typically, I would just post a pointer that these are available from the readers and leave it at that. However, I'm making an exception this time to make it available while "pre-announcing" an impending improvement in the ELP Page on the WWW... After I get the ELP Digest backlog cleared out, I'm going to commit some time to a major overhaul of the ELP page and include as complete a discography as I can (including some images and pictures from various tours). Ah, the things I can justify now that I have better access to a scanner. So, stay tuned and thanks to all of you (and especially, Maureen, Mark, and Bjorn-Are) who have contributed to the information sharing effort to motivate me to keep on updating the ELP Web Page. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 1995 15:38:20 +1100 To: arnold@iii.net From: agraham@nucleus.com (Allan Graham) Subject: In The Hot Seat My name is Frank King. I'm a Canadian using Allan's machine. He thrilled me by showing me all the cool ELP stuff on Internet. I'm a major fan & saw the band perform in Vancouver and Calgary. But I must disagree with virtually every positive review of In The Hot Seat. This recording is such a disappointment that I got rid of it (at a used CD store) just a few weeks after purchase. This is about as far from an ELP recording as is possible. The first song sounds like a rip-off of schmaltz producer David Foster's mediocre theme for the 1988 Calgary winter olympic games. Another track, something about "take my heart" (I don't remember the song titles) reminded me of trashy keyboard riffs off a latter-day Chicago album. If that isn't enough to turn the stomach of any real ELP fan, then the trio may as well produce a Chipmunks album!! Since when is a wonderfully talented, gloriously pretentious band like ELP reduced to aping terrible commercial acts? Is is just because Black Moon didn't do well? If so, nobody should kid themselves; radio is so damn bad these days it'll NEVER play ELP, no matter how good the song is. Therefore, Keith, Greg and Carl should do what they want and forget about selling a million records. Critics will always hate them, radio won't play them, so they should do what they want. But if what they want is to make slop like In The Hot Seat, then count me out. I'll just haul out Pirates (the fantastic re-mix found only in the box set) and count my blessings for the band's brilliant past. ------------------------------ From: WCHALLENGE@aol.com Date: Fri, 6 Jan 1995 14:41:32 -0500 To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Re: The Great Gate(s) of Kiev In the #27 Digest Paul Giortz writes: >Has anyone on this network any (good) explenation of why ELP calls the piece >The Great Gates of Kiev, in plural, when Mussorskij himself called it >The Great Gate of Kiev, in singular, and the sketch of Victor Hartmann >was actually of one city gate to Kiev (that was never accomplished)? >Does it suit better with the lyrics - which I don't have? Well, I don't know the reasoning behind the slight change in the movement's title, but I can supply you with the lyrics, from memory, since my "ELP Anthology" songbook (out-of-print) is at home. Your mentioning a bit of the background behind the conception of Mussorgsky's original piano score is helpful. To expand: the piece was written on the occassion of the death of Modeste Mussorgsky's friend, the artist/architect Victor Hartmann (I'm going from memory here again). The form of the piece is based on an individual walking through an art gallery an viewing Hartmann's artwork. The "Promenade" captures musically the short walk between each picture in the gallery, hence, it is a repeated motif within the piece, often very short. Mussorgsky's complete score is probably twice as long as ELP's. There are other pieces (pictures) like "The Ox Carts" and "The Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks" (which was covered by Tomita on one of his albums). What is of interest is the themes of life and death which Greg Lake tried to capture in his lyrics, especially in his accoustic piece and The Great Gates of Kiev. Here are the lyrics: Come forth, from love's spire Born in life's fire, Born in life's fire. Come forth, from love's spire In the burning, all are [of our] yearning, for life to be. And in pain there will [must] be gain, New Life! Stirring in, salty streams And dark hidden seams Where the fossil sun gleams. They were, sent from [to] the gates Ride the tides of fate Ride the tides of fate. They were, sent from [to] the gates, In the burning all are [of our] yearning, For life to be. There's no end to my life, No beginning to my death: Death is life. The bracketed portions were sections that Greg changed in later recordings (such as from In Concert/Works Live) or where the written songbook lyrics seemed to possibly err. By the way, I am very sure the the "Stirring in, salty streams . . . fossil sun gleams" section is a quote from a literary source. I thought it was from Samuel Taylor Coleridge but I couldn't find it recently where I thought it would be (Kubla Kahn). Does anyone know if this is a quote or not? P.S. For years my friend and I agonized over the lyric: "My life's course is guided, decided by _____ ______." A few years ago we thought we figured it out: "limits strong." Now that I received ITHS for Christmas, I finally know the real lyric: "limits drawn." Boy, talk about your anticlimax. At least on "Black Moon" there was "Farewell to Arms", which featured (IMO) a fantastic Emerson synth solo. Just try to name something of that stature on ITHS. I think that Lake's biggest problem lately is that he writes songs with definite themes, or at least themes that have already become cliche'. I mean, listen to "Daddy" (ick!) after listening to "Karn Evil 9" or "Tarkus" and you definitely see this. Also it seems that Keith has been sequencing (rather than playing live) the synth / keyboard parts on most of the songs. ELP has turned from a rock band into a pop group. This is most disheartening. I wish they could get their act together and write something else like "A Time and a Place" that really rocks... C'mon Keith! Thanks for the help and keep > up the good work with ELP Digest!!! The song BSS was recorded as a promo for the BSS album and was issued on a flexi disc given away with a late '73/early '74 issue of the UK's New Musical Express, shortly before ELP became 'untouchable' by that paper's musical philosophy. I still have the flexi, but it's really no different to what appears on Works V2. It's appearance on that album, along with all the B-sides, etc. seemed a potent sign at the time that ELP had run sadly short of ideas... Hope this helps, Dave [ Editor's Note: Well, I always thought that Works Vol. 2 was a kind of "housecleaning" of stuff left over from various studio days. I think of "Brain Salad Surgery" (the song) more of a first demo of the then-brand-new PolyMoog. Keith got one of the first of these, as I recall reading at the time, and this song evolved as a kind of "work out" for the new instrument. It's hard to imagine at times but it's amazing that albums like BSS were recorded in an era when most of the synths Keith used could only generate one note at a time. Ah, the days of watching Keith slide various drawers of MiniMoogs out of his touring setup to cover all the sounds. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jan 95 11:05:29 PST From: Tim Holmes To: Craig Koukol Cc: John E Arnold Subject: RE: ELP Digest V5 #1 > >Date: Wed, 14 Dec 1994 14:02:27 -0600 (CST) >From: Craig Koukol >Subject: Brain Salad >To: arnold@iii.net > >Hi John. It came in a 7" copy of the BSS album cover and contained the track in question followed by snippets off tracks of the album, culminating in the "last bit" off Benny the Bouncer. You can usually find copies of this around record fairs in the UK, I use to have a couple but not having seen them for a few years they may have gone the way of the dustman... ELP didn't include it on the album as they didn't want people to think that it was the reason for the name of the album, which it wasn't. My brother played me his 8-track tape of "Welcome back my friends..." to show me there were more skilled rock keyboardists than Elton John, and I was hooked immediately. A couple of years later I played some of the tracks from that album for a friend who was also hooked immediately, and went right out and started buying all their albums (this was about a year before Works 1 came out). The Japanese version of IN THE HOT SEAT includes the lyrics to all of the songs. Mo and I have transcribed the lyrics for those of you who don't have them. (Mo's sister acquired Japanese copies of ItHS while in Japan at the time of the US release.) In a dedicated effort to get the lyrics right, Mo and I listened to the CD and tried to correct for the versions that Greg actually sang. Notice that on _Black Moon_ and _Works I_, the printed lyrics do not match the sung lyrics exactly. This is true on most albums. So if there are mistakes, we humbly apologize. In a couple of places, it's hard to hear just what's being sung. In "Hand Of Truth," it sounds to me like Greg sings 'We have the power, we can make any change' twice. The lyrics print this line as 'a change' every time. On "One By One," the lyric sheet shows 'Out of this cocoon' every time; listening to it I hear 'Out of the cocoon' the first two times and 'Out of this cocoon' only on the last chorus. In "Thin Line," I hear Greg sing 'It's a pretty thin line between love and hate' atleast twice. Again the lyrics show 'It's a thin line' every time. I'm guessing that Greg made a few tiny changes during the recordings. Also, some of the lyrics seem to be changed to fit the meter of the songs. (Which points to lyrics first, tune second, composing.) December The snow lay on the ground She was coming home from school one night From the other side of town It was getting late, there was something wrong Then I heard the news A TV flash by 9 o'clock They'd found her socks and shoes Daddy, come and bring me home I didn't know which way to turn I was shaking like a leaf I got into my car and drove Searching every street Has anybody seen her Have you found my little girl She's all I have, all I possess To me, she means the world I can hear her calling Daddy, come and bring me home Daddy, Daddy, come and bring me home Daddy, when you gonna bring me home As time went by each silent night We knew all hope was gone We knew the light had flickered From the eyes that once had shone They caught a man in a bar one night He confessed to what he'd done He'd laid her body out in some dark wood Just didn't know which one Daddy, Daddy, come and bring me home Daddy, Daddy, come and bring me home I just couldn't leave her out there Lying on her own 'Cause she belongs to me And I belong to her I know she rests in Heaven With the angels on her throne But now I hear her calling Daddy, Daddy, come and bring me home Daddy, come and bring me home Daddy, Daddy, come and bring me home Daddy, Daddy, come and bring me home ONE BY ONE (Emerson/Lake/Olsen) Watch as the demons dance They move like a spider Look in the devil's eyes As he goes for the kill In the valley of truth The shadow is just getting wider While the fingers are freezing The potion is starting to chill Still we all walk on, one by one A spectre is screaming There's fire in the heat of the city The neon is burning The walls are starting to crack Even under the ground The subway is littered with pity Just look over your shoulder You'll notice a knife in your back Still we all walk on, one by one Out of this cocoon Reachin' for the moon, we pray Though our dreams are made of sand There's fate in every hand we play We're searchin' for the flame Where in Heaven's name Will light be found again So when will the falcon rise I'm starting to wonder His talons are sharp as a dagger He's looking for blood 'Til we carry the word of light We'll be hidden by thunder 'Til we open the door of our being We'll drown in the flood Still we all walk on, one by one Out of this cocoon Reachin' for the moon, we pray Though our dreams are made of sand There's fate in every hand we play We're searchin' for the flame Where in heaven's name Will light be found again Out of this cocoon Reachin' for the moon, we pray Though our dreams are made of sand There's fate in every hand we play We're searchin' for the flame Where in heaven's name Will light be found We're searchin' for the flame Where in heaven's name Will light be found again HEART ON ICE (Lake/Olsen) Just take my heart, put it on ice 'Cause I don't think I could stand another blow Just one more tumble of the dice Though it's slipping through my hands Can't let go And when the hard rain falls Whatever you may say There's no hiding in this jungle You just can't run away And I'm sorry when I fell from grace Unable to conceal Only passion is a fool to chase The loneliness I feel Just take my heart into the night It no longer needs to see the light of day Heaven knows I cannot fight As the edges of my soul get chipped away Walking down this street The gutter runs with tears And I would sell my heart To cross the bridge of compromise But you cannot walk on broken glass 'Cause every step you take Is just one cut deeper than the last One more heart you break Just take my heart, put it on ice Your love is a fire, a burning hurricane We can never cross the river of good-byes While desire hides in the darkness Searching for the flame There were so many days And still I wonder why I will never mend these broken wings No matter how I try I thought we had it all, but now it seems We just flickered like a candle In the cathedral of our dreams Just take my heart put it on ice Your love is a fire, a burning hurricane We can never cross the river of good-byes While desire hides in the darkness Searching for the flame Just take my heart put it on ice You love is a fire, a burning hurricane We can never cross the river of good-byes While desire hides in the darkness Searching for the flame THIN LINE (Wray/Olsen/Emerson) Precious power, woman to man Cold blue steel in the palm of your hand Shots to ask If he wanted to dance He had a face like a mask Somebody said From the Bible he'd quote There was dust on the man In the long black coat There are no mistakes in life some people say It's true, sometimes, you can see it that way But people don't live or die, people just float She went with the man in the long black coat Preacher was a-talkin' There was sermon he gave He said every man's conscience Is vile and depraved You cannot depend on it To be your guide When it's you Who must keep it satisfied It ain't easy to swallow It sticks in the throat She gave her heart to the man In the long black coat There's smoke on the water It's been there since June Tree trunks uprooted 'Neath the high crescent moon Feel the pulse and vibration The rumbling force Somebody is out there Beating on a dead horse She never said nothin' There was nothin' she wrote She'd gone with the man In a long black coat There are no mistakes in life some people say It's true, sometimes, you can see it that way But people don't live or die, people just float She went with the man in the long black coat CHANGE (Wray/Emerson/Olsen) A missed step by the river's edge A chosen word but it took too long Your
