I hope you'll put up with the temporary overuse of your mailbox space. But I think it will definitely be worth it once we're back to a more "immediate" Digest. I am trying to download the back issues.for tips on the music and a little less on the words and times of "bubba" lake. I can't wait for the list of keith's borrowing. It is a fact that I heard keiths "pictures" FIRST before I heard the real one. same with brandenbuger (the nice). or "rondo" that one turned me on to brubeck. the copland, all of it shows that he had to learn music like the rest of us. All great artists/players do covers. His versons sound a lot better than that disco beethoven song somebody did. Now tarkus, I don't have big hands but if you look at all the parts in the stuff Keith has played he must have hands like Eubie Blake... I can play tarkus till the cows come home, with the fingering I use (why doesn't somebody ask the man himself? or even one of his kids?) this fingering is consistent with the fingering I use on all the bass parts for most of tarkus the main bass rif (left hand) is 5 2 1 4 1 2 4 1 2 4 for the first one that starts on F(F,Bb,Eb,Bb,Ab,Eb,Bb,Fb,Cb,Gb). When he does the riff starting on C, I use 5 3 1 5 1 2 5 12 4 (C,F,Bb,F,Eb,Bb,F,Cb,F,Db) and when he does it starting on E I use 5 3 1 5 1 3 5 1 2 4 (E,A,D,A,G,D,A,E,B,F). But lets not forget the repeating left hand from the manticore. the 9/8 thing (C,F,G,Eb,Ab,Bb,F,Bb,C) the only way I could keep this going with all the climbs, breaks and stuff going on is to use 5 2 1 4 2 1 5 2 1. one can also use 5 3 1 4 1 2 4 1 2 4 for all three!! well I think we should keep a running list of all the different fingerings----bob [ Editor's note: That Emerson quote list will be in the NEXT issue (finally!) Also, I think compiling all the fingerings used for Tarkus and the ostinatos is a fine idea. If some reader wants to gather all of the fingerings that people have talked about and send me a file, I'll put it on the Web site. And perhaps someone who's watched really closely can tell us what fingering Keith uses. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 May 1995 09:34:38 +0200 (GMT) From: Simon Griffiths To: John E Arnold Subject: Re: ELP Digest V5 #13 (ELP at the Circus) Re: > Date: 27 Mar 1995 19:02:39 U > From: "Brian OSullivan" > Subject: ELP at the circus > To: "John Arnold" > > ELP at the circus > I took my son to Ringling Bros. circus over the weekend & was pleasantly > surprised to hear the band play an ELP-inspired version of "Hoedown" early in > the show. Was also at the more recent Mann and Tower shows over the last few years. The "3" show had to have some of the worst music I had heard, but was suprised at the encore, I think it was Fanfare for the Common Man and America ??? I just remember mostly KE equipment constantly breaking down ( 3 times ???), which kept stopping the show. At the Mann show, I think I remember equipment failure during Knife Edge, and them having to retart song in middle. Anyway in most cases their shows are the best. EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER NEWSLETTER MAY 1995 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instead of releasing the following news on this newsletter in issue # 14 of Fanzine For the Common Man, I have decided to issue a newsletter keeping the news "new". Issue # 14 is definitely going to be late due to all of the newsletters I have been doing (which includes compiling, writing, sorting, printing and mailing) and I am waiting for some more info regarding the completion of the KEITH EMERSON bio and other articles. I would estimate a mid June release. (Please, if you have ordered that issue and it does not arrive around that time, write me with a self addressed stamped envelope. Postage gets very expensive. ) Issue # 14 for US/Canada costs $ 3.50 and everywhere else $ 4.50. THE NEWS........ * ELP will not tour says their management. In two recent interviews Keith Emerson when asked "What about ELP" said, "I'm not sure when the next ELP project will begin." (EMERSON IN SOUND ON SOUND, May 1995 interview to Gordon Reid). Carl Palmer said "We've all got our outside projects that we like to get involved with" (The writer said Palmer is doing a project with LEVEL 42's Mark King and former ULTRAVOX leader Midge Ure - PAISTE NEWS # 2, early 1995 interview by Jerry McCulley). Greg Lake and his manager are on a deadline trying to get a June release from a 1981 GL concert (no more details known). * KEITH EMERSON is very busy. In the interview mentioned above he said "I'm also negotiating with SONY CLASSICAL in France to record an orchestrated ELP CD which would be a collection of our pieces performed by an orchestra, with me conducting. In addition there's a chance of resurrecting some unreleased material by THE NICE, and I'm even contemplating writing and recording some new material using the original members of that band. (Lee Jackson and Brian Davison have already formed a band - DT). There's also the possibility of writing and recording the soundtrack for the next Brad Pitt film, and there's some music I did for an American TV series ("Iron Man" cartoon??? - DT) which I'm thinking about releasing on CD. I'm also in the process of completing an autobiography which will come complete with a CD of previously unreleased material. When I think about it, there's an awful lot going on at the moment." (Martyn Hanson spoke to someone at the company that distributes Emerson's CD and they said that Carl Palmer's unreleased Percussion Concerto from 1975 is planned to be included on the orchestrated ELP CD) (Forrest WIlliard has been tracking down latest Emerson news and has told me an unreleased Emerson concerto may see release also and his soundtracks are going to be released in the US on CD. Both of these reports are from a conversation with Craig at Diamond Needle Enterprises.) Also, Emo will not be doing that Marvel Comics movie soundtrack mentioned a couple of newsletter ago. It was to have been "The X-Men" (confirmed by Mike Marks of Marvel Comics and Lisa Zambrano now of A&M Records.) * CORRECTION!!! That Greg Lake newsletter I mentioned in (some) April newsletters was a misunderstanding. Mary Ann Burns was collecting names for Greg Lake's manager. There are no plans to do a newsletter. I, too, hope it emerges > someday. - John - ] John, one minor correction. California Jam was produced by Dick Clark for his In Concert series on ABC (it wasn't a Don Kirshner Rock Concert). My wife and I were there and, believe it or not, we left before ELP came on. ELP was our main reason for being there several things contributed to our decision to leave. - We missed several acts while we waited in line to be frisked before entering. Finally the line swept through a fence that had suddenly "fallen over". - We had to sit so far back that we were behind the rear speakers (the ones that were pointed forward). The close speakers (pointed away) and and the far speakers (pointed toward us) sounded equally loud but the sound arrived at different times (i.e., the sound stunk). - With binoculars, we could just make out the colors of the shirts of the performers. We stayed through Seals & Croft, Black Oak Arkansas and Black Sabbath and took off before Deep Purple came on. Fortunately Dick Clark got several month's worth of In Concerts out of the show and we were able to see the whole thing up close on TV. I think there's also a Black Sabbath video from that concert. I haven't rented it but I've noticed it at the video rental place. Keep up the good work! G. Whetmore very much proves! Bjo/rn Are WORKS 3 LIVE AT THE SIX BELLS PUB, CHIDDINGLY" MAY 13TH 1995 Keith Emerson called it his local pub for over 20 years and he played there on several occasions, including 1986 with ELPowell and 1988 with 3! So it was to this very place that Works 3 and their many fans payed a visit to see where the great man himself lived for so many years and to once again fill the Six Bells pub with great ELP music! And who better to do it, than the 3 lads from Portsmouth - Frank Askew, Chris da Silva and Lawrence Ellis! They opened the set with TARKUS - Eruption, Stones of Years and Aquatarkus! Works 3 were in good form and the accoustics in the Six Bells were excellent! They then swept into a very good version of PAPER BLOOD, complete with segments from Norway's great composer, Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King"! HOEDOWN was next, Chris da Silva in good form and always a very popular piece with the audience! This piece included extracts from "Turkey in the Straw" by Steven Foster. FROM THE BEGINNING had been changed considerable since their last concert, they had made it funky and made use of all their instruments, which was very effective and a nice improvement on their earlier version. KNIFE EDGE included excerpts from "French Suite No. 1 in D Minor" by J.S. Bach and was performed very well. They finished the first half with 2 pieces from the classics - ROMEO & JULIET and JERUSALEM, the latter with the audience singing along at full force! After a few refreshments and time to talk and reflect, Works 3 came on to a blistering second half, which started off with FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN, inc. Blues Variation, Joybringer (Jupiter from Jaws), Beethoven's 9th - 4th Movement and right at the end 5 notes of Jupiter Suite by Holst! This piece really did get the audience going and created an atmosphere which reminded me a bit of Royal Albert Hall, October 1992, albeit on a smaller scale! NUTROCKER was next, played magnificently and Phil Forster, as ususal, in charge of the audience participation! STILL YOU TURN ME ON quieted things down a bit, with Lawrence in very good form, before LUCKY MAN, with the entire Six Bells Pub singing in unison! Then Frank, Chris and Lawrence played PETER GUNN, and with a new twist, went straight into 21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN, which was new to their set. This piece was excellent and demonstrated fully what power and skills Work 3 is capable of! Undoubtedly one of the best songs of the evening. During this piece, Lawrence used a special microphone to create the vocal effects of the original song! This song also included Frank's drum solo of the evening, performed with blistering fast paradiddles, flam ratamacues and excellent backsticking and also with a reference to The Percussion Concerto from Toccata! All performed with ultimate skills, which would have made Carl Palmer proud! PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION was next, including Promenade, The Gnome, Promenade vocal, The Sage, The Hut of Baba Yaga and Great Gates of Kiev - a very powerfull piece, which Work 3 has got down to a fine art! The Encore started with SAILORS TALE (King Crimson), leading into another new song of their set for the evening, BLACK MOON, which was very powerfull! They then went straight into a favourite of mine, TOUCH & GO, which was a nice arrangement and very well done. This song included excerpts from Vaughan Williams' Greensleeves. The last piece of the evening was also new to Works 3's set - KARN EVIL 9, 3RD MPRESSION! I waited with keen anticipation for this and was not disappointed! It was performed brilliantly, went down well with the audience and again demonstrated what an excellent band Works 3 is!! After the show, the landlord of The SIx Bells did not hesitate to invite Works 3 back to play in the pub again this autumn! But first we will all invade Birmingham on September 9th for the first ever ELP CONVENTION, where again Works 3 will perform the music of ELP! The Six Bells gig gave us a taste of what's to come and with more musical pieces at rehearsal stage, which will be added to the set for the Convention, I can only say that all who come to the Convention are in for a REAL, REAL trat!! Than you for all your hard work Frank Askew, Chris da Silva and Lawrence Ellis!! And as to the Convention - well, I'll be there, I'll be there - I WILL BE THERE!! And so will a lot of other people!! Liv G. Whetmore May 23rd , 1995 P.S.: As an answer to Terry Kroetsch, who asks whether anyone has done covers of ELP songs, let me just say one word - WORKS 3!!! I know it's along way to come, but I hope Terry and a lot of other people in the USA and other places in the world will consider coming to the Convention in September - it is going to be well worth for everybody! The organisation is going very well, we have a lot of bookings, inc. one from New Zealand and one from New York and we are now aslo very hopefull that at least one of the members of ELP will be there!
