ELP Digest Monday, July 24 1995 Volume 5 : Issue 17 The "It Smiles Especially For You" Edition Today's Topics: Greg Lake "Live" King Biscuit CD is out! Keith Emerson musical quote list sorted by Composer Sources for ELP music and a few tablatures from the net... More about the ELP sheet music books Re: Drumming Hello from a new reader (but long-time fan) Prelude ======= Hi. As promised, I'm finally running Steve Plotczyk's ELP quotes list. I think you'll be astounded at its completeness; I was! But first, some ego gratification and the news of the release of the Greg Lake "live" CD from King Biscuit Records. And then even more about music. It's a bigger issue than expected but I think you'll find it one of the most info-packed we've ever done. And, today's edition name is in honor of my son who is 3 years old today. Happy Birthday, Kenneth! - John - P.S. My apologies in advance if the size of this makes your mailer break it into multiple pieces. ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 22:15:18 -0400 From: John E Arnold To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Greg Lake "Live" King Biscuit CD is out! Hi! This weekend, I was able to get a copy of the newest ELP-related CD: "King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents GREG LAKE In Concert". I found it at Newbury Comics (a Boston area alternative music store; http://www.newbury.com). This concert contains MUCH more music than was originally broadcast on "King Biscuit". Here's the track list: 1. Medley: (a) Fanfare for the Common Man (b) Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression, Part 2) 2. Nuclear Attack 3. The Lie 4. Retribution Drive 5. Lucky Man 6. Parisienne Walkways (from Gary Moore's "Back on the Streets" LP) 7. You Really Got a Hold On Me (yes, a cover of the Miracles hit!) 8. Love You Too Much 9. 21st Century Schizoid Man 10. In the Court of the Crimson King. The Greg Lake band is Greg Lake (vocals, guitars), Gary Moore (lead guitar, vocals), Tommy Eyre (keyboards, vocals), Ted McKenna (Drums), Tristram Margetts (bass). And here's the part I got the biggest thrill from.... on the back of the CD booklet... "Special Thanks: Bill Levenson, Stewart Young, Brian Emerson at Part Rock Mgt., Steve Barnett at Hard To Handle Mgt., Barry Ehrmand and everyone at King Biscuit Records/MMS, Randy Acker, John Arnold, Mary Ann Burns, Gary Moore, Tommy Eyre, Ted McKenna, Tristram Margetts and of course, the many family, friends and fans throughout the years." Yowza! I'm pretty sure Randy Acker is an ELP Digest reader who supplied the photos used on the cover and back cover of the booklet and Mary Ann is the one who got Greg's management in touch with the Digest to help find pictures. And to have my name mentioned on a real CD is simply unbelievable. Thanks to Mary Ann and Randy! One more thing. It says... Correspondence: Greg Lake c/o Pilato Entertainment Group 277 Alexander St., Suite 813 Rochester, NY 14607 'nuff said. Why not find a copy for yourself. It's really a very good recording of Greg and his "1st solo tour" band. - John - ------------------------------ Date: 05 Jun 95 14:24:12 EDT From: "Plotczyk, Steve" To: John E Arnold Subject: Keith Emerson musical quote list sorted by Composer Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach Quote: 2 & 3 Part Inventions #1 in C Song: Take A Pebble - Last I checked, you can STILL get it--go to your local music store and have them order it from HARRIS-TELLER, a Chicago music warehouse that supplies practically all music stores. The other two books are Tarkus, which contains everything on the album; it's been out of print since the early 1980s. The third is the "ELP anthology," a misnomer because it only contains SOME of their best (in addition to a good portion of Love Beach). It has Pirates, Still You Turn Me On, The Fugue from Endless Enigma, Love Beach, Officer and Gentleman Suite, and The Great Gates of Kiev. It, too is out of print, and unavailable. The complete score to KE's Piano Concerto is available from Theodore Presser Publ. in Bryn Mawr, PA (zip 19010). Also, a doctoral dissertation on KE (by Blair Woodruff Pethel) is available from UMI in Ann Arbor, MI. I just did my Music Theory Master's Thesis on Tarkus, and am hoping the same folks will publish it (it's pending approval from KE or whomever owns the rights to Tarkus). KE has also had bits and pieces published over the years in KEYBOARD; check your local library. I have done some transcription work (caveat: "actual pitches and rhythms may vary"), and was HOPING that someone else in cyberspace had done some of their own (hopefully accurate) transcription work. I think we all would like to have a large library of ELP music, wouldn't we? I'd be happy to trade what I've got, except the thesis (but I DON'T want to xerox any legit. ELP music). -Tarkusmoog@aol.com ********** hope this helps! What "happened" was the invention of the drum machine, which enabled non-drummers to create drum parts more cheaply than live drummers in a studio. As a result, drum parts in popular music became simpler, and live drummers began adapting their styles to sound more and more like drum machines. We hear the results in pop music today. (Drum machines have been used for other types of more complex music too, but they started out very simple.) Great to see such enthusiasm for a group that formed such an important part of my youth. I bought ELP1 in 1970 & used to go to sleep to the unearthly strains of Lucky Man's moog solo. As a new approach to music, I don't think they were equalled and the LP remains my favourite. I saw them here in Sheffield 3 times and spoke to Emerson twice. At the time (as a hero-worshipper) I collected every cutting I could find & still have thre bulging scrapbooks. I soon discovered the Nice & realise where Rondo came from (their encore in '71). If anyone knows of any unreleased Nice stuff I'd love to hear. I've lent my Nice scrapbook to a chap producing a double CD "Best of the Nice" to be released soon. I gather there will be rare stuff on that. His budget was spent when he heard about my scrapbook, so he's paying me with an acetate of an unreleased "Brandenberger" 45!!!! To be brutally frank, I think they lost momentum after Trilogy and Emerson seemed hooked on his Yamaha when I always preferred the Hammond, but you can't expect him to stand still. Love Beach featured what must be the worst cover of all time! If anyone wants to raid my archives with questions, I'm happy to oblige.
