Just as importantly, the newly remastered (and expanded) Keith Emerson Christmas Album is out and available for ordering. See the web site for details (and a preview of the cover) or read on for the essential phone numbers. Finally, lots of comments, questions, and the announcement of an ambitious "progressive rock" family tree, photo, interview, and more project. My name is Will Alexander and I am the personal manager and producer of Keith Emerson and spend much time on the ELP/AOL board. It has come to my attention that you have recently posted an unauthorized transcription of Karn Evil 9 1st Impression which the copyright is owned by Keith Emerson. Transcriptions of ANY Keith Emerson compositions are NOT to be FREELY DISTRIBUTED as you have listed in your file descriptor. This is a violation of United States and International Copyright Laws. I have established a shareware program for such transcriptions. You and/or subscribers are responsible for a $10.00 shareware fee payable directly to Keith Emerson, c/o EmerSonics, xxxxxxxxxxxx, xxxxxxxxxxxx, xx, xxxxx (see note below). We are inviting you to join in the participation in the shareware plan. In order to avoid any complications, I would advise you to: 1) Change the distribution descriptor to Shareware $10.00 PAYABLE TO THE ABOVE ADDRESS, 2) make sure that anyone who you have distributed a transcription of any KE transcription is notified of of their financial responsibility to Mr. Emerson. If you feel that you do not want to cooperate in the participation of the shareware plan, I highly recomend that you withdraw the MIDIfile that you posted on AOL or on any othe electronic BBS. Many others are participating in the plan and have taken the responsibility in distribution of these transcriptions until the time when an authorized transcription is published and becomes available for you to buy at your local sheet music distributor. Keep up the good work, Will Alexander (MIDI Mastr @ AOL.com) [ED. NOTE: Updated 17 June 2009 - Earlier this year, it came to my attention that this address and this old 'shareware' idea are no longer in place. To retain the 'feel' of the ELP Digest archive, I left the message intact with the exception that I removed the address to prevent confusion for people reading this archive. ] ------------------------------ Date: 15 Aug 1995 12:11:01 U From: "Wood,Brent" Subject: ELP transcriptions To: "ELP Digest" Hi John, What follows is for inclusion in the next ELP digest. Recently, Mike Myers advertised through the ELP digest that I had completed transcriptions of Karn Evil 9-2nd and 3rd impression. I subsequently received many requests for them and have mailed people copies, charging only a small fee to cover my expenses (postage, envelopes and copying). I have distributed copies of the transcriptions only to further interest in Keith Emerson's music, not to make a profit (which I certainly haven't!). However, I recently received an E-mail of an AOL discussion by Will Alexander (Emerson's manager/engineer) regarding their feeling on the distribution of such transcriptions. The text follows: Will Alexander said: >Subj: Emerson Transcriptions 95-08-12 13:31:00 EDT >From: MIDI Mastr >Bootlegs are just that ...... you are just rationalizing STEALING saying >to proliferate them because they aren't available for your own immediate >gratification. But when you print it up and >distribute it to the public without the author's permission or benifit >you are stealing it just the same as if you took a gun to the local >7-11 and took the till. > >I do have a solution though........ in the same vein as shareware, why >don't you send a check for $10.00US made out to Keith Emerson for every >copy of of a transcription that you proliferate. This would be in order I >believe. In this way you actually will show your appreciation for all the >pleasure and intellectual stimulation that Keith has provided you >throughout the years. Please NO bad checks..... I'm serious about >this....... > >Send to: Keith Emerson > c/o EmerSonics > xxxxxxxxxxxxxx > xxxxxxxxxxxxx, xx xxxxx > (see note below) > >Sincerely, > >Will Alexander >Manager/Producer to Keith Emerson ( yes this is real) [ED. ] As you can see, Will Alexander (and presumably Mr. Emerson) consider the distribution of such transcriptions inappropriate and threating to their livelihood. However, they have suggested a way in which to allow such transcriptions to be distributed, by the payment of royalty fee to Mr. Emerson when such a transaction occurs. Since it seems unlikely that authorized transcriptions of these works will ever be published (as all three other transcription books are out of print), this seems like the best way to ensure the availability of such transcriptions yet still allow Mr. Emerson to received the compensation to which he is entitled. Consequently, I will be requiring such a payment before I will fill any future requests for my transcriptions, and will be happy to forward such payments to Will Alexander. In addition, I strongly encourage any of you who have previously received copies of my transcriptions to send the necessary payment to the above address. In this way we may be able to ensure access to high-quality transcriptions and still reward the creator of the original works. In order for the system to work it requires your participation. I should emphasize that my transcriptions have not been authorized by Mr. Emerson and company, but am pursuing further discussion with Will Alexander on this matter. Brent Wood P.S. Yes, I have completed a transcriptions of Karn Evil 9 - 1st impression, as well as the solos from Tarkus, but am holding distribution until I hear more from Will Alexander. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Aug 95 06:51:28 0800 From: Jonas Sen To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Piano Problems Mr. Emerson might find this web site interesting, as I understand that he suffers from occupational problems related to his piano playing: http://rvik.ismennt.is/~jssen/musmed.html Yours sincerely, -Jonas Sen ------------------------------ From: Bjorn-Are.Davidsen@s.prosjekt98.telenor.no Date: Wed, 18 Oct 1995 19:53:39 +0100 To: John E Arnold Subject: CONVENTION and NEWS SERVICE This just ticked in by snail from Liv. Re: KEITH and KEYBOARD It was interesting to read Bjorn Are's comments on Keith Emerson/ELP and Keyboard and I totally agree with him that Works Vloume 1 should have been included in the Top 20, not only because of Pirates and Fanfare, but also because of the great Piano COncerto No 1!!! I must say, though, that I do feel that Keyboard is the one magazine that has always supported Keith and Keith is in fact the one artist who has been featured on their front cover more times than any other artist!! I enjoyed reading the article on him in the October issue of Keyboard - would have been nice for fans to have another transcription in there as well, though!! The bottom line is this - there aren't many magazines that write about ELP and Keith Emerson (the recent Record Collector article was well overdue - it was the first time ever that ELP has been featured in that magazine!), with the exception of Keyboard who quite regularely slip a KE article or interview in and I am very gratefull to Keyboard for that!! Re: ELP NEWSLETETR/NEWS SERVICE The next project to come from the people who organised the ELP Convention, is an ELP Newsletter/News Service. We are getting it arranged at the moment and we are hoping to release the first issue early 1996. I have been appointed Editor and although it is too early to give too many details about it at this stage, I can tell you that it will contain interviews, News section, Competition, reviews, various articles, photos etc. On this note, I am KEENLY seeking a lucky person who was able to attend the Keith Emerson seminar/lecture in Chicago recently, to write a small report AND include 1 or 2 photos of Keith there! This report and a photo would be included in the first issue of our newsletter, the person writing it will of course be credited and will receive the first issue of the newsletter free of charge! I finally yanked my turntable from my brother and decided to dig up some old albums. I haven't heard Welcome Back My friends for a long long time. And you know something>? It's still an awesome phenomenal work. No artists today seem to have that kind of depth. Toccata was a scorcher. And I didn't even know that Lake was quoting Epitath from In the Court of the Crimson King (Tarkus/Battlefield). Is the CD version of this work better? I'd love to hear aquatarkus on CD While I'm at it I have a few questions.... What's the relationship between Fripp, another of my favorites, and Emerson? What do they think of each other's work. I know Fripp has a little disdain for giantism (of the ELP variety). In addition besides classical music what does Emerson like to listen to? Why did Lake only record one album with K.Crimson? [ Editor's note: Actually, he sings on a few songs on the 2nd KC album. ] Is UK (Alaska, Presto Vivace) an ELP ripoff or what? What is the relationship between ELP and the Italian band PFM? What became of PFM? And what is the band BANCO all about? I also own Free Creek of which Emerson has a few tracks? Where can I get an Emerson discography? And do classical musicians respect Emerson? I once heard an arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition on classical radio and the announcer credited Emerson with it. Has anyone heard about it? What is the group mastermind like? I live in Rio de Janeiro and I joined the Net 2 days before I come to spend my holidays in England. It's a pity I won't be able to attend the big event of the 9th, I will be back home by then. But I am sure you will tell me everything about it later, in the digest. I downloaded all the issues of ELP Digest 5, which I plan to read carefully later on. I met ELP in Rio in March 94, when they had their Brazilian debut. I was working for the English speaking community newspaper "Rio Life" at that time and I had the opportunity of taking part of the press conference in Sheraton Hotel. Greg and I had a little chat after that and he was very pleasant to talk to. I gave him the phone number of Neville Thorley, a friend of mine who was also born in Bournemouth, for a few things Greg wanted to check in Rio. I hope Brazil will be included in the next world tours from now on. I would like to have an interview with ELP for my new publication "The Umbrella". Since "Rio Life" closed down "The Umbrella" has been the English and American communities darling in Rio de Janeiro. I wish people would stop talking about Greg's weight and payed more attention to his musical talents. When Luciano Pavarotti was in Rio nobody said "Hey, here comes the fatso Pavarotti!" but I read in local newspapers "Greg Lake is very fat but he still sings a hell of a lot". I have no records of Greg promising he would be a "Top Model" and I think his diet should be his and his family's concern. If people were worried about Greg's health that would be fine but when they mention his weight, they're only thinking about his looks. I wonder if those guys who tease so much are all handsome, fit and perfect. Let's talk about Greg's work and leave his private life for himself for Christ sake. As Mr Lake is the big subject, I would like to ask if his solo albums are available as CDs and, if so, how I could purchase them (including this new one that's coming out soon). I have looked for them in stores in N.Y. and London and never found any. Please send messages to my e-mail address, I am not sure how my Internet access will behave back home in Brazil, in case you reply through the digest. E-mail has been ok but some of my friends there have been having problems accessing Netscape. Cheers! With the ELP digest find, I feel as though I have been released from a desert island. Please add me to your subscrier list. I may be able to offer some help for any questions particularly in the bands early years. As a huge Nice fan, it was with some trepidation that I travelled all the way to Plymouth, England to the first ELP concert ever. Such was the impact that I rushed back (hitch-hiking) to London for the London debut at Walthamstow Polytechnic before catching the first "concert hall" show at Croydon's Fairfield Halls two days later. This venue was always one of Keith's favorites I believe - being the site of the Nice fairwell concert and the recording site of the last sanctioned Nice album-the 5 Bridges Suite. A question was posed in the digest in October 94 which I did not seee an answetr to, the question was concerning the venue of the 1971 fimed concert that included Knife Edge etc - this was recorded at The Lyceum, London one night. Or the impossibility of a further advance after the BSS excel? This question is very intriguing to me: after all, I think it is very important to (at least) really understand why a spectacular group as ELP suffered such a decadence, while some groups get older with some pride. More specifically, the book will trace the lineage of the genre from 1967 with the formation of The Nice to Yes, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, UK, Asia, GTR, Three, ABWH and so on... The focus of this book is more on LINEAGE - not categorizing a particular band or musician. The family tree of The Nice, Yes and King Crimson in particular is among the richest in rock - this is where I will focus. The concept of the book is patterned after the great family tree drawings of Pete Frame - but in a more readable fashion, (not just a collection of facts). Exclusive interviews are under way with most of the artists involved - recent notables include John Wetton and Robert Berry. Several more are scheduled over the coming weeks (including a few "surprises" from the forgotten past). Through these interviews and my own extensive research, I hope to produce the most complete source of information on classic "prog rock" available from one source. Finally, I also hope to include never before published photographs from the entire span of these artists careers. This is where you can help: I need support from fans who have taken photos over the years who are willing to make them available for use in the book.
