But it's worth the wait, I hope. There seems to be a lot of good information in this one. And, this late breaking news... I was talking to Kathie at Sundown Records (ordering my copies of the Keith Christmas CD) and she told me that Keith is being interviewed for the Westwood One radio series called "Featured Artist Thursday". And, it's scheduled to be aired NEXT THURSDAY (Dec. 7, 1995). They'll be talking to Keith, playing some of the Christmas CD, probably playing some of the Rhino 5-song ELP Christmas mini-CD, etc. I can't find a Boston-area outlet for this show but I hope you can find it in your part of the world (though it's probably only USA and Canada that get it). Gand Music will be handling the distribution of the video whichhas been produced for Emersonics by Sacred Cow Productions (didn't they do the now legendary video of "Pirates"?). The video is approximately 50 minutes long and consists of Keith discussing his surgery and physical therapy, his music and inspirations, and his long awaited autobiography. Music included is a unique version of Tarkus (with orchestrated kazoo band by Will Alexander), Close to Home/Ballade, my favorite Glorietta and a non recorded release of Green Onions. I was reading the december issue of Q-magazine the other day and frankly wasn`t really expecting to come across anything on ELP. I was happily surprised by a few advertisments though. The first advert was about the extended videoversion of The Isle Of Wight Festival.Among the previously unseen perfomances were...ELP performing Rondo! This along with the fact that the rest of the video is packed with virtually any major sixties/early seventies artists you could think of makes it a pretty essential purchase, eh? The video is called "Message to Love" and it seems to be a rather big release as the ad states that all major video stockists will have it. The price is 12.99+1.95P&P(in the UK I suppose). The name of the company behind the release is PNE Video - mail me if you need the address or credit card hotline. The second big ELP related advert was for a new ELP compilation CD! This CD is imaginatively called "The best of Emerson, Lake and Palmer" and is due out on the 13th of November, which means it is out now! According to the advert it includes 14 classic tracks. Unfortunately it seems unlikely that it will include any goodies such as previously unreleased material as there was nothing about that in the advert. Maybe there will at least be a nice little booklet detailing the history of the band with pictures and so on. It`s always good though to see something happening on the ELP front! The name of the record company issuing this material is Essential Records. In the same issue of Q I also came across some mail order company ads which contained ELP related stuff .For all of you having trouble to find the Greg Lake In Concert CD in the UK, I can say that it is available at 17.99 from a mail order company called ESPRIT. I also found an intresting advert from Spin Compact Discs. They have a 3CD box set with The Nice called Immidiate Years retailing at 21.99. If anyone needs the adresses to the companies mentioned feel free to mail me. Keep up the good work John! Bye for now. Kristoffer Gansing fr5krga@stud.hks.se [ Editor's note: It appears that these prices are in British pounds. If anyone could find out if the Isle of Wight video will be available in NTSC (the non-PAL/American TV standard), please let me (and the Digest readers) know. - John - ] ------------------------------ From: "Jean P. Nadeau" To: "'ELP Digest'" Subject: The Christmas Album Date: Sun, 19 Nov 1995 16:07:52 -0500 I received my (autographed---"Happy Xmas - Keith Emerson") copy of the Christmas Album this week. This is not your normal, run-of-the-mill progressive rock album by Keith-Emerson-the-Rock-Star. It is rather an intimate---and very special---Christmas celebration by Keith Emerson, the man with all of his God-given talents. In it, Keith salutes his mother, his son and dedicates his work to the memory of his late father, Noel Emerson. The music is both universal and mature, with something to please a very broad spectrum of musical tastes. The quality is superb (thanks, Will!). It is a work of art to be treasured for years and years to come. Happy Xmas to you too, Keith! We wish you an hopeful Christmas We wish you a brave new year All anguish, pain and sadness Leave your heart and let your road be clear... >From everyone in the family, Jean P., Fran, Pierre-Marc & Jean-Michel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Nov 1995 01:33:48 -0500 To: arnold@iii.net From: David Wilson-Holmes Subject: Keith Emersons Christmas Album Hi John, I know that in the past that detractors of both Keith and the rest of the band have tended to slag them for their rather mechanical approach to composition and performance; despite all of their collective virtuosty skills and powerhouse performances I guess this is still relatively true (pardon me if I am wrong). With the exception of Greg's compositions which are contrary to this Keith has written (in my opinion anyhow) few soul bearing compositions with the exception of his Piano Concerto No 1. However getting to the point track 7 on his Christmas Album: Glorietta is a truly moving piece, I have NEVER heard Keith play (and compose) with such depth as this one. It sends tingles down my spine when I listen to it. I do realise of course that it is dedicated to his mother but is there something else here that has made him write on such a level. Thanks again, I really do enjoy your Digest, and BTW if there are any avid exponents of E.L.P. within Australia I would love to hear from you. Regards, David. ------------------------------ From: Bjorn-Are.Davidsen@s.prosjekt98.telenor.no Date: Mon, 18 Sep 1995 15:00:21 +0200 To: John E Arnold Subject: MULTIPLE SUBJECTS Having been away for several days (e.g. visiting Birmingham and London), I found a lot of subjects to comment on from the latest Digests (V5 #22 & 23): Re: AOL Will Alexander wrote in V5#23 : > I realize that a lot of you don't get on the AOL board like you should. To enligthen our (at least mine) blissfull state of ignorance, please elaborate on what this is, why we should get on board and how we might do it! [ Editor's note: AOL is America On-Line ] TW, I heartily agrre with your interpretation of the credits for KE9 and have never doubted that it's Lake singing. Anyone still in doubt should listen carefully to the "I'll be there part" in the first half of 1 impression. When Lake sings "To beg and Borrow", it's Lake, as in the rest of that impression. Re: ELP CONVENTION It's great to see that we're getting reports that fast on the convention! As one of the 350 I second most of the positive comments by ELPFAN in V5#23. BTW, who are you ("ELPFAN"?) and did I meet you? I met a lot of others, and I think the only negative thing about the Convention was that it was just too many to talk to :-) and a bit too little space for talking and at the same time being aware of what was going on (some delays in the program meant that one had to be a bit on the alert not to miss e.g. the start of Noddy's Puncture). Among those I had the fortune to talk (a bit) to was Liv Whetmore, Carlos Alberto Teixeira (from Brazil), David Bentley (who still hadn't gotten over my thesis from last autumn, I think, on "In The Hot Seat growing on you" - well it's stopped growing now, and has become somewhat whitered, even on me) and Per Lindh (who together with David and a few others showed some of the Emo playing style on organ), as well as the Norwegians, Swedes and a German couple. And some others which I didn't catch the name of, as we were too busy on topics like ELP, Wakeman and the reforming of 1972-74 Yes, at the local MacDonalds.. Even if I agree with ELPFAN on most issues, I think perhaps Works 3 was at least as good as NP. To me NP was like watching a young Keith (from the Nice period!) doing ELP stuff and basically showing off. A "lifetime experience", yes indeed, however, Works 3 gave some other lifetime experiences, like witnessing the whole of Karn Evil 9 live, with the audience joining in as computers! For some strange reason NP reminded me of a concert I attended with Uriah Heep back in '74 (at that time only the "minor superbands" made it to Norway), with Ken Hensley also showing off on keyboards. BTW, I'm looking forward to showing my kids the picture of Noddy in his car on NP's drum set, as well as the Noddy doll on top of the keyboard stack. Re: ELP MAGAZINE - A MUST! As part of the Norwegian delegation I also had the fortune to sit in for Tor Angar Bakken at the Scandinavian fan Club stand. Now, Tor is one of the greatest ELP fans I know, and a marvel at making ELP items. He's editing the Scandinavian Newsletter which really is a kind pf ELP memorabila magazine. Each issues has more than 50 pages (usually) and the later ones mostly in English (I promise). Tor has a seemingly inexhausible collection of ELP news clippings, interviews and so on (like e.g. bad news on Emo's financial situation, providing reason for why he's selling most of his keyboard and stage cloths), and has people like me sending articles (often updated versions of Digest stuff) and comments. There was really a great interest for the Newsletter on the convention, with a lot of people signing for copies, after having seen it. Anyone interested (you should be :-)) may send an IRC to Tor Ansgar Bakken P.O.Box 15, Oppsal 0619 Oslo Norway. Tor will provide you with info on how to get (and pay...) for the present issue (a convention special issue) and back issues. He also got copies of my "A Time and a Place" very, very. very comprehensive listing of all kinds of ELP and related bands tapes, videos and CD's, including unofficial ones (to make things clear, I'm not dealing in any of this, however, I've made a long, long list for collectors to show what's avaialble out there, somewhere)! Hopefully ELP will make some of this matereial official in remastered and high quality versions (like the great Emerson demos CD which one could buy at the convention)! Let's find ways to put pressure on them! Nadeau" To: "'arnold@iii.net'" Subject: Changing States Date: Wed, 20 Sep 1995 22:00:58 -0400 I recently acquired Keith Emerson's Changing States. I had ordered from an outfit from Spokane, WA, who maintain a site on the Internet, AB CDs. As I ordered, I was under the impression that I was to get an American edition of the CD. Not so: I received the original British edition, for... $ 10.00 (plus about $ 4.00 postage & handling). I was shocked as my local CD store was asking $ 45.00 Cdn plus taxes for exactly the same. I also discovered they list another Keith recording: Elegy and Five Bridges. I ordered, it is B/O, but I should get it some day. I assume it is quite rare as I didn't see that title listed anywhere else. From a conversation with Alan Gillis, a fellow Digest subscriber, I learned that those were compositions dating back to The Nice. Anyway, they list it at about $ 11.00. A steal. AB CDs say they're affiliated with several CD stores for the purpose of offering used CDs to their customers. It may serve sometime... I think you should include this in the ELP Digest so other readers can avail themselves of the deal. AB CDs' URL is: http://www.iea.com/~abcds/. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Sep 95 10:37:42 CST From: "Sjoerd van den Berg" To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Re: ELP, Welcome Back video (Digest V5 #22) Subject: ELP, Welcome Back video This is my first entree to the digest and I want to say that I am very pleased with your work. Keep it up. I am 19 years old student from the Netherlands and am a ELP-fan for the last two years now. I have never had the fortune to see them performing live...:-( I hopefully have a satisfying answer to Martin Boyd's question: > Is the video "Welcome Back" of the Black Moon 92-93 tour available on > PAL format? I saw it in the USA on NTSC format but back here in Australia > nobody seems to know anything about it. A few years ago, when I had just "discovered" ELP I saw the video in a musicshop here in the Netherlands. It was in PAL format. Recently I have been trying to find it, but it is unfortunately very hard to find anything of ELP here. I do not know wether it is available in Australia as well, but I do hope so. The major trick is to get away from overtly ELP paradigms when listening to "Tragic Symphony" (and I guess their other albums). Critics in Gibraltar and Progression have overstated the similarities and thus unfortunately created a false expectation. My disappointment stemmed from them not making a new Brain Salad Surgery, which really is an unfair demand on anyone. Mastermind is no ELP clone, however they are quite good in their own right! I think something of the same may be said for Triumvirat, after all, even if they are really ELP clones (or trying). If one by some strange whim of fate manages to rid oneself of the ELP connotations, their albums get a LOT better. However, that's not easy :-) Re: King Kong of Keyboards I'm not sure if this has been stated clearly in the Digest, however the September issue of Keyboard (which finally reached Norway last week) has an interesting reader's poll. The same and certain keyboardist was placed as # in the categories: * Best Rock Keyboardist * Overall Best Keyboardist * Most Influential player the last 20 years As Keyboard pointed out two years ago. "Keith has got this place in his pocket from day one". And even if Return of the Manticore was not on the list of the Top Three Best Keyboard albums last 20 years, it was the only one which got honorable mention. Well, Alberto Ginastera was an Argentine composer, born in Buenos Aires on April 11, 1916; I believe he died in 1983. "Dance Creole" is based on the "Suite de Danzas Criollas", which was composed in New York City in 1946.
