The Christmas Album Keith Emerson Christmas Album MASTERMIND Home Page Prelude ======= Hello! And Happy to you and your families. Due to the Christmas rush for me and my family, I've slipped in my "schedule" for ELP Digests again. But I'll try to keep up as a 1996 New Year's Resolution. This year is the 20th anniversary of the release of the "I Believe in Father Christmas" single. And the song still seems as poignant as ever. I even dug out the video this year and it is still a favorite after all these years. Perhaps we'll get an offical release of the video some time rather than the old version I taped off NBC's "Friday Night Videos" show a number of years ago. Highlights of this issue include Greg Lake hinting at a possible ELP tour for 1996, details of a Nice box set, and a magazine that's published the music for "I Believe in Father Christmas". - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 95 19:35:25 -0800 From: Karen Elizabeth Stober To: arnold@iii.net Subject: ELP CD- EP Hello, from karen1@chelsea.ios.com I got the "Father Xmas" ELP 5 song CD EP, and there is no live "Father Xmas" on it. It has both 1970's versions of "Father Xmas". Nothing new. The cover photo is the infamous photo in the snow. The back photo is a really old one, from the "Impressions - Live In Buffalo" cd. This morning, Greg Lake appeared by phone (from Dussledorf, Germany) on WZLX radio in Boston. Greg talked about Rhino taking over the ELP catalog of material and releasing the 5-song "Christmas" EP CD as the first part of their relationship with ELP. Greg is in Germany for Christmas with his family (visiting other members of his family). He talked about how nice Christmas is in Germany. Then, the interesting news. He mentioned that the Greg Lake career retrospective (my words, not his) CD will be out in the first half of 1996. And he said there is active discussion about a possible ELP World Tour beginning in June 1996. I know many ELP fans outside of North America will be glad to hear that he said World Tour and not just US tour! It is still early in discussions so nothing is definite but Greg said that they are exporing "a few exciting concepts" for the tour. He's hoping that more details will be known in the next few months. So, now we have something extra to look forward to in 1996! - John - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Dec 1995 18:51:52 -0500 To: arnold@iii.net From: karen1@chelsea.ios.com (Karen Elizabeth Stober) Subject: Nice Box set Hi, everybody! I'm Karen E. Stober, a new subscriber to the Digest. I'm walking on air tonight. Thanksgiving night I bought the "Songs For A Modern Church" LP. That's got to be one of the rarest ELP related albums of all time. Keith is on "My Name Is Rain". A spunky little song about how rain is good for the earth. I got it from Vinyl Vendors in Los Angeles, CA for $15. New ELP-related releases are a new five song CD-EP, which is finally out and I should get my copy within a week. I believe it's been covered in the Digest. The"Return Of" box set on Rhino is $80 at Colony Records in New York City. Greg Lake is on a "Various Artists - Christmas Wishes" cd which I should also have shortly. A two-cd various artists set, Isle Of Wight 1970, is due out end of December, early January. It has been delayed several times now. Don't know why. There will be twenty-six live tracks. ELP, Hendrix, The Doors are a few of the featured artists. A new, extended video is out. And I just bought the old one. The 1995 King Biscuit Flower Hour ELP broadcast is the same 1973/74 show they've played all along. Bruce Pilato, Greg's manager, informed me last September that Greg's retrospective cd set is due out first quarter 1996 with a solo tour being planned. I got a leeter from Bruce the Monday after Thanksgiving and, unlike Keith and Carl, Greg is not doing an orchestral ELP album. I asked if Greg needs a trumpet player, as I play the trumpet. Nope, no plans to use live horns. I would have loved to have done the solo at the end of Father Xmas. I also asked Bruce if he wanted someone to create and maintain a Greg Lake home page. Bruce said he just hired someone to do Web pages for all his artists. The Greg Lake/ Bruce Pilato home page is due any time in December 1995. I will keep you posted. To whomever asked in a prior digest, The "Best Works" cd is J!MCO Records, JICK-89169. Tracks are: Inferno (Main Title Theme) Hello, Sailor Parts 1, 2, 3 Cigarettes, Ice, Etc. If anybody has seen it, what is the music like? Have you got the new three cd Nice Box Set? It's from Charly Records,CD IMM Box 2. It's called "The Nice - The Immediate Years". Back in 1977 Charly Records released a three LP box set, "The Nice - Ars Longa Vita Brevis", Charly Records 26 76 210. Most of the new CD box set appears to be taken from the LPs. In two tracks on the new cd box set I found elements that I feel Keith used on later ELP tracks. On disc 3, track 2, "The Symphony For Group And Orchestra", I feel there are keyboard parts that would later become part of "Piano Concerto No. 1". Just listen to the cd "Impressions, Live In Buffalo, July 20, 1974", 1993 Universal TW 5 3001/2, Disc 1, Track 9. On the box set check out the times of 8:41 and especially 9:10. It ends at 12:08. On disc 3, track 6, "For Example", the bass riff is highly reminiscent of "Living Sin", especially at 1:26 on "The Return Of The Manticore", Victory 383 484 004-2, Disc 3, track 9. On the Nice box set check out the times of 2:23 to 4:16. At 4:16 the organ reminds me of "The Three Fates" from the first ELP album, Atlantic SD 19120, Side 2, #1. The Nice box set has a "nice" booklet, too. Thirty-one pages of photos, clippings and a brief history by Roger Dopson. Classic photos! I especially like the one on page twenty-nine. Keith is seated at a three-tiered church organ. In the background are pews and an oblong, stained glass church window, rosette just below the window's peaked top. Keith's left hand is on the lowest tier of the organ, and his right is embracing the middle. The hope and joy of the organ's sounds fills the church as Keith looks up at the light, at his dream, into his future. A very few weeks ago I recieved a little piece of that future. I never expected his new Christmas Album to be personally autographed. I "jumped out of my skin" when I saw "Happy Xmas Karen, Keith Emerson" on it! Troika is fun. I sent Keith a donation for his physiotherapy along with his birthday card. On it, I wrote a few lines, and closed with "My heart and home is always open to you and your family. Happy Birthday, and all my hope and love for 1996." And to all ELP fans and their families, all my hope and love for 1996, and Happy Holidays. Karen E. Stober karen1@chelsea.ios.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 1995 9:10:43 -0500 (EST) From: Shawn McCann To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Rhino Hi John, I was in Newbury comics in Burlington, MA last week looking around when a copy of ROTM attracted my attention. Having not seen it in the stores for quite a long time, I went over to see what they were charging for it, when I discovered that the Rhino logo has replaced Victory! And they are charging more for it than I had ever seen: This was priced at around $70. I've never seen it priced higher than $60 in the past. (I think I paid $52 or so for it on initial release.) They also had a couple of copies of the Christmas EP. When I left they only had one! Unfortunately, I never saw the ICE article that mentioned the move to Rhino, and frankly thought it was just a rumor until seeing these releases with my own eyes. It was a mere two years ago that Polygram's Bill Levenson oversaw the remastering of the entire catalog, searching through the vaults for the optimum master tapes. And we got domestic releases of _Welcome Back...(etc)_ and _Love Beach_ for the first time. And an expanded _Works Live_. And _Pictures at an Exhibition_ has intelligent track numbers, not just 2 tracks corresponding to the two sides of the LP (one of the first CDs I bought 11 years ago, I don't know if Atlantic ever fixed that problem, but it was a great source of frustration not to be able to quickly find "Nutrocker"). If you ask me, the fans did very well by Victory as far as the back catalog goes. ITHS is another story altogether, however. I don't want to dredge up old news, but are ITHS and a lack of promotion by Victory the reasons for this most recent label switch? Did Atlantic come to their senses and realize what a valuable act they had lost? Was this a clever plan by Atlantic to have another record company foot the bill for remastering the catalog of one of their artists? (surely not, but the thought crossed my mind.) Inquiring minds want to know! Anyway, the sound of the EP is fantastic. It's great to finally own a copy of Greg Lake's original version of "Father Christmas" (my favorite version). And there are 4 albums that I hadn't gotten around to picking up yet, so I'll wait until the Rhino releases appear at the local record store. I don't intend to replace any of my copies of the Victory releases, unlike the old Atlantic releases that I got rid of two years ago. -- Shawn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 95 12:19 GMT From: ronc@cogs.susx.ac.uk (Ron Chrisley) To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Thesis on Emerson's music for sale I'm selling my copy of Blair Pethel's excellent thesis on Emerson's compositional style, for $36 airmail post paid. Sometime in the 1980s, a local radio station (NYC) was playing a 24 hr marathon of Xmas music. I decided to just let my tape record whatever happened to come on. I ended up taping this song that I liked from the first moment I heard it. By now you have propably figured out that it's "Father Christmas," or I wouldn't be here. It wasn't until five or so years later, while wathcing NBCs Friday night video show, that I learned it was ELP who made this song since they were performing it acoustically. Since then I have been on a quest to replace my worn normal bias TDK version with crisp, clear, digital cd quality, but I could never seem to find it, until today. While at Tower Records I saw a compilation called "A Rock 'n' Roll Christmas." I saw the song on it and for $6.99 I though my quest had ended. What I heard later was an equally as good but slower version, sung by someone with a raspier voice and background vocals. But it had no credits in the liner notes and I don't know what year it as made or the like. In addition to being slightly faster, the version I seek has what I believe to be an orchestra and a choir. I looked through some of the ELP digest's but what I found seeemed only to confuse me more. And when I saw an EP with the same name being released I didn't know what to think. I would greatly appreciate if you could clearify this for me and put an end to my quest. [ Editor's note: There are 2 versions (actually more but on official release 2) of "I Believe in Father Christmas". The original was released in 1975 as a Greg Lake solo single. I think it's the version you heard with the orchestra and choir and it is the version that is featured in the video. Works Volume 2 features an ELP rework where Keith takes on the orchestra parts with the synths, etc. Both versions are on the new ELP "I Believe in Father Christmas" 5-song CD that was just released this year. So, you should be able to both! MIME-Version: 1.0 I see from the last digest that some of you have ordered the Keith Emerson Christmas CD and are awaiting their arrival, so this may bum you out a bit, but: I found a new, cutout (!) copy of the disc for $6.47 (!?) at Disc-O-Rama on West 4th St. in Manhattan. Don't know why it was a cutout, but they have a table of cutouts and other assorted discs just outside the store. They had several more copies, so anyone who hasn't ordered and lives nearby may want to pick one up. I'd like to say I can pick them up for people, but I'm just too busy these days.
