Re: Thesis on Tarkus Prelude ======= [ ...error removed 3/21/96 - JEA ] I've made this issue's topics deal mostly with Keith's work (with ELP, the Nice, and the solo work) including his latest appearance on the CD of a band called "Tempest". Also, I am still having trouble with my Internet Service Provider. I'll probably have a new address in place in early April. For now, mail to the old "arnold@iii.net" address still seems to get to me. But since I can't reliably dial in, I've having all that mail forwarded to me here at work. (Thanks, too, to Banyan and the folks here at Coordinate.com - the Banyan Internet Division - for letting me use my work machine to get this Digest out while I decide where to set up shop for my personal stuff.) Till next time, - John - P.S. If you send mail to me at arnold@iii.net and it starts to bounce, please check the ELP Web Site for a new address. I'll make sure I post any new contact address there for easy net-wide access. ------------------------------------------------------------ [ ...error removed 3/21/96 - JEA ] ------------------------------ From: gastarit@comm.net Date: Tue, 20 Feb 96 08:57:41 -0600 Subject: Tempest (Keith Emerson guest appearance) To: arnold@iii.net While perusing the bins of a local cd store I came across a cd by a group called "Tempest". Not the same band which featured Allan Holdsworth and Jon Hiseman. The cd cover mentioned something about K. Emerson appearing on some tracks. Furthermore the caption said something like...."Celtic Rock". Anyone familiar with this ? I didn't have time to sample it...thanks Glenn ------------------------------ Date: 01 Mar 96 10:54:40 EST From: "Plotczyk, Steve" To: John E Arnold Subject: Re: Emerson on "Tempest" CD The group "Tempest" just released a new CD "Turn Of The Wheel" (MA 9007). The Label is Magna Carter 208 E. 51st St. Suite 1820 New York NY 10022. The first song "The Barrow Man" (4:55) composed by Lief Sorbye features Keith Emerson on Keyboards! Also of interest is 3's Robert Berry who Produced, Engineered, played keyboards and provided vocals. The music on this CD reminds me of Steeleye Span. The way that Keith is featured on the first song reminds me of Marc Bonilla's CD "EE Ticket" with Keith playing on the first track "White Noise". Latest ELP Fanzine is out! Dave Terralavoro's "Fanzine For The Common Man" issue #15 is out. It's chock full of good info including the History of Gregory Stuart Lake part 1 and the History of Carl Fredrick Kendal Palmer part 1. Issue #16 will be going out later this year (after the Lake anthology comes out). Back issues are also available. Interested individuals should contact: David Terralavoro 43 Spring Street Wappingers Falls NY 12590 Dave requests "no phone calls please" and is not internet connected. Steve Plotczyk ------------------------------ From: jmorman@VNET.IBM.COM Date: Sat, 2 Mar 96 11:12:26 EST To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Emerson on New Tempest CD Justed wanted to clue everybody in on some new Emerson work on the new Tempest CD "Turn of the Wheel" (Magna Carta, 208 E. 51st St. #1820 New York, NY 10022). I've followed this band for several years and this is their 5th album and their first on the Magna Carta label (which has several prog rock releases). They're a Celtic/Rock band in the spirit of Fairport Convention, but harder rocking than most, kind of like Oyster Band. Anyway the good news is they've reworked any older song of theirs called 'The Barrow Man', with Emerson providing a 1 minute 20 second intro with lead singer's spoken word intro for about 30 seconds of that time. Keith also does a solo bit after the first couple of refrains. Tasty stuff that's not to be missed, especially as Robert Berry (Three) produces the album. Evidently Magna Carta is billing themselves as a prog rock label and has 4 tribute releases (Pink Floyd, Genesis , Yes and Jethro Tull) with some other bands I've not heard of (Shadow Gallery, Magellan, Enchant, Cairo, and World Trade). To get the disc send $15.98 to the address listed above. Bye, Jim Morman ------------------------------ From: Scott Lindsey To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Emerson on Tempest album Keith Emerson makes a guest appearance on the new album "Turn of the Wheel" by Tempest on Magna Carta Records (MA-9007-2). Emerson only appears on the 1st track "The Barrow Man". Robert Berry produced the album and is responsible for keyboards and backing vocals throughout the album. The album is advertised as "Celtic Rock" and seems to fall somewhere between Oyster Band and Steeleye Span. Seeing as Magna Carta has produced Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull tribute albums, maybe there's a possibility of an ELP album. ------------------------------ From: Bjorn-Are.Davidsen@s.prosjekt98.telenor.no Date: Tue, 5 Mar 1996 22:30:16 +0100 To: John E Arnold Subject: URGENT CLARIFICATION Liv - and a lot of Americans - have had some challenges with transfer of funds for "Impressions", so here's a message of clarifications! Bjo/rn Are -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: IMPRESSIONS PAYMENT Further to my previous message regarding the new ELP magazine, "Impressions", it appears that some Americans have problems getting hold of UK Sterling. Here in England it is easy to just walk into any bank and order any currency (within reason), but I understand that is not so in the U.S.A. I have therefore decided that Americans can pay for "Impressions" in $$ as follows: $27,- if sent by International Money Orders (due to exchange and IMO charges at this end) for three issues. $25,- if sent as cash (registered post) for three issues. This works out as slightly more than L15,- which is what you were due to pay (postage included), but I have to cover any changes that may occur in the present exchange rate and also bank charges this end. I hope this is acceptable to you all and that makes it easier. I am getting a very good response to a mailshot we just did to 1000 ELP fans - the postman doesn't know what has hit him! I have no exact date at the moment on when "Impressions" will be ready, but we are not very far off. Payment should be sent to Trilogy "Impressions" 28 Stonebanks, Manor Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey KT12 2QE, ENGLAND. Liv. G. Tracks 2 and 3 are one continuous song broken into 2 tracks. Track 7 is truncated. Tracks 1 to 8 seem to be the Top Gear show. Tracks 9 to 12 are one continuous live show (with a big audience). Tracks 10 and 11 are one continuous song broken into 2 tracks. Track 10 includes a drum solo unlike track 2 and so is longer. My CD player indicates 58:44 total time. All these songs include David O'list on guitar. I got my CD from: Metro Music PO Box 10004 Silver Spring, MD 20904-0004 (301)622-2473 My cost was $24 plus $4.75 for postage. I definitely recommend this CD not only for the alternate versions of previously available material but especially for the 3 previously unavailable songs: Lumpy Gravy, Aries The Fire Eater and Sombrero Sam. Steve Plotczyk ------------------------------ Date: 19 Jan 96 13:09:47 EST From: "Plotczyk, Steve" To: John E Arnold Subject: Re: ELP Digest V6 #1 Man In The Long Black Coat Did anyone else see Joan Osborne perform "One Of Us" on Saturday Night Live with host Christopher Walken last Saturday Night (1-13-96)? I picked up her CD "Relish" and was pleasantly suprised to find a version of "Man In The Long Black Coat" also on it. I invite comparisons between this and In The Hot Seat's version. Maybe I'm too much into just ELP but I haven't run into a non-ELP album that I've liked for a long time. This one is pretty good. It's also got an interesting song about Ray Charles on it. Does anyone know of any other covers of ELP songs? Song Repair? Maybe it's just me but I enjoy the fade-out fade-in at the break between Karn Evil 9 Impression 1 Parts 1 and 2. When this was re-mastered out into a seamless continuation I felt the loss of a significant feature of the song. Another song that has a fade-out fade-in effect at the end of the song is Led Zeppelin's "Thank You". The 1st time you hear the song you think it's over but then it comes back with a little more music before it really ends. With Karn Evil 9 it comes back with a lot more music (a whole album side!). Another example of "tampering" is Tommy James And The Shondell's "Crimson And Clover". The album had the long version which included an instrumental section that was recorded separately from the rest of the song. When the instrumental section was spliced into the master tape it turned out that the tape recorder speed had drifted between the recording sessions. This caused the instrumental section to subtly slow in tempo and drop a fraction of note down. To me, this sudden change was a very enjoyable effect to listen to. But guess what? When the album was transferred to CD this "error" was corrected. When I listen to the new version it's missing that certain something that really made the song what it was for me. What's next? Is the end of "Knife Edge" going to be "corrected" by bringing it back up to normal speed? Please, re-mastering should be an improvement, not a means to undo the music. The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 cd set is outon Essential Records, EDF CD 327, GAS 0000327 EDF. It has a 7.24 minute long version of Rondo, with a drum solo. There is a brief writeup of each band on the accompanying booklet. "Emerson, Lake & Palmer were the decade's firts genuine supergroup. Its members were drawn from the ranks of three of Britain's biggest late sixties rock acts, Emerson from The Nice, Lake from King Crimson and Palmer from Atomic rooster. ELP were on of the reasons the kids had come. In short there was no way ELP could fail. They became, as far as the press and punters were concerned, one of the highlights of the festival. The track presented here, BLUE RONDO A LA TURK, which is built around the Dave Brubeck Jazz standard, proved a constant stage favorite. It is played with that combination of aggression and showmanship that became standard at an ELP show." Think snow! Karen E.
