We have had to return a cheque to a subscriber in the States, as our bank will not accept it. May I therefore, for the last time (I promise!) outline the method of payment for three issues of "Impressions" for people outside the UK:- 1: Check for L15 drawn on a UK bank 2: Cash for L15 3: Cash for $25 for those of you who cannot get to a bank to get UK Sterling These are the only methods of payment that we c a n accept. Please do n o t send checks drawn in $$ on a US bank, as these will have to be returned to you! I really am sorry for any inconvenience and all the different instructions I have given previously - it is only by trial and error that we have been able to establish what our bank can and can't accept. And all banks over here are different, in that some will accept $$ checks and some won't! The bank we have our account "Trilogy" with, won't for small amounts like that! And I promise I shall not mention another word on the Digest about how to pay for "Impressions" - this is it! Thanks for your patience, everybody, and I look forward to hearing from those of you who have yet to subscribe to "Impressions"!! We are going to print next week (week starting Monday 25th)! This is most likely the Mercury re-release of material from The Nice's Elegy and Five Bridges as "Keith Emerson with the Nice." I noticed that the last copy of that I saw in a store was labeled as "Elegy and Five Bridges" on the under-wrapper insert, even though the CD is missing a few memorable tracks ("One of Those People," a non-orchestral version of "Karelia," and "Country Pie.") The Hoedown sweep was done with an envelope generator, not portamento. It actually sweeps up a couple octaves before rapidly falling back to an octave-and-a-fifth up for the sustain part. The DX7's pitch envelope is global-per-note, that is, it affects all of the operators. Therefore, you can't get the sweep-against-a-drone effect of Hoedown. Also, Hoedown is made up of sawtooth waves, which are hard to get on a DX, and it also uses a resonant filter, which the DX can't emulate very well. In general, the DX7 is a pretty poor choice for emulating analog synths. There was a huge discussion (flamewars, actually) in the USENET notes group "rec.music.synth" back in the late eighties about this. (The DX can do some of the GX-1 sounds for Fanfare pretty well, though, and is perfect for the "Minotaur" lead sound from WBMFTTSTNE's Tarkus! One sine wave... It also does a decent Hammond through the right amp and effects.) Your mirage would be a better choice for doing the Hoover, but I don't know if it has pitch envelopes. My ESQ-1 hits the nail pretty much on the head, except it doesn't have "The World's Most Dangerous" bandwidth and punch. You _could_ sample the sound on the Mirage, and with a bit of massaging and looping, it might sound pretty close. Anyone else out there interested in re-creating Keith's sounds on other synths? Hi John! Thanks so much for putting this digest together. Where else could people like us talk about ELP and share this stuff together? As the 19 year old newcomer, I have a few things that I'd like to share, if I may. First, a little on Keith's synths. The hated GX-1 Yamaha was one of the first polyphonic synths, and it was all analog (And it didn't use FM, as was mentioned by somebody, although you could try make FM sounds on it), and was introduced in late 1974. It cost 50 grand, and very few were made. The model that came after it, the CS-80, was rather well known, and cost considerably less (although it lacked triple manuals and a few hot features). Someone mentioned that KE used a Polymoog on "Benny the Bouncer", which isn't true because that came out only in '75. It was most likely either tape layering or an experimental polyphonic model which he used live. Those who are interested in synths should check out a book called "Vintage Synthesizers" by Keyboard Magazine. A great book indeed, it has a chapter on Keith Emerson and his Moog (although it's mostly technical in nature, where Bob Moog and Will Alexander discuss his modular Moog and it's present condition), as well as tons of other stuff, like the great analog tape "sampler" of the sixties, the Mellotron, that all King Crimson fans will recall. Secondly, I feel that slowly, progressive music is making a comeback. It won't kick in probably for a while, but after all the punk clears out it may wind up popular again. Several clubs in the village (NYC) are beginning to have occasional progressive nights, and it seems like some people are starting to get back into Crimson and a few other of those great groups, although we have a long way to go until we see the ELP anthology on ABC! Which brings me to my third issue... I am a filmmaker and would like to use ELP's works as music in some of my films. I would also like to use King Crimson's works (during the prosperous Lake era). I am not considering using these films to make a sizable profit, as they are assignments rather than productions, and would perhaps fetch no more than a film festival screening at best. Regardless, I would like to know whom to approach, and I'd love to give a copy of my "Works" to our three friends - if they'll have a second to watch it. Perhaps Will Alexander would be kind to advise me on this... I am also very curious as to what some of Greg Lake's beliefs are, if that's OK. I understand this may be none of our business, but has he ever cared to comment on that (as someone like Pete Townsend would) ? His lyrics are not that easy to understand, and I hesitate to think of him as an atheist-we were, after all, "meant to be here"! Of course, this has probably been touched off here at one point, and in that case I apologize! Regardless of whether he believes in God or what, though, Greg gives me a religious experience whenever he sings and plays his acoustic, and he's truly God gifted - watch the ripe tomato! That's all that really matters. Anyway, thanks for the forum and keep up the excellent work! I can't wait to recieve every copy! However, it's really a shame that our three heroes haven't yet stopped by and dropped a line or two at least once!!! - George. P.S. There is a good full color shot of Greg with his 8 string bass that someone has requested. It's in the ELP compilation transcription book (I bought the last one in the store!). I have this, but don't have a scanner! Sorry! [ Editor's Note: The best contacts I know of for "business-related" issues of ELP which, I think, would include the rights to use their music in films are Keith's manager (Will Alexander: MIDIMastr@aol.com) and Greg's manager (Bruce Pilato: BruceTune@aol.com). Well being a DX owner programer myself, I worked up an approximation of Keith's Modular Moog sound used in the intro. The sound is done by using pitch envelopes which the DX and many other synths have. I have already privately Emailed Bob the parameters but I thought that other Digester's may be interested. One of these days I will work on the patch for the Roland D50, but the concept is the same for those who want to try. D50 owners should keep in mind that when in the Dual mode the D50 has two pitch envelopes, one for the lower tone and one for the upper. Hi , John, I'm writing to from Germany and Jim already told You about me, I think. Things are not going well for ELP and that is the reason I would like to tell some concert-experiences I made in 1992. Perhaps it is just the right time to keep the flame alive. I hope You will put it into the digest. OK, in 1992 I went to three concerts. It started in Cologne, continued in Essen(where I live) and at the end of November we went on a pilgrimage to Frankfurt. ELP had to cancel the concert in Frankfurt twice, because of Keith's kind of influenza and Greg's cold (voice was gone; that was the reason they had to play the Munich gig halfway instrumental). So that gave us the opportunity to see them again. It was unbelievable travelling to Frankfurt and seeing them for the third time and believe me, it sent shivers up and down my spine(not only mine). The whole thing started with a speech of Fritz Rau (THE concert promoter in Germany). He told us that the Congress-Hall in Frankfurt is sacred ground. He saw ELP at the "Isle of White Festival" and invited them to Germany. And their first concert was in Frankfurt. And than he praised the opportunity that we were allowed to see three so fantastic musicians. You can imagine that we were overwhelmed by his words. There was an old man(about 60) who just expressed what we felt about ELP, who had an understanding, not destroying criticism. The concert started with "Tarkus", not with Karn Evil. That was different to the two concerts before. And we were all fascinated. Beside me there was a couple with their son and they wanted to show him what they loved so much and what they saw in the early 70's. That was a great experience for me. During that evening we were a great family. But let me tell what was different to the two concerts I've seen before. The feeling that every ELP concert is a bit different to the others started with "Honky Tonk Train Blues". At the end of that piece Keith went into an improvisation. Greg sat in front of the drum-kit (as usual) and than the piece had to come to an end. But Keith ducked behind the grand piano and laughed at us and didn't stop. (I'm just having a look into the dictionary) Yes, he strumed a tune on the grand piano and Greg and Carl became nervous, because they tried to look at Keith in order to get the right timing to stop. Keith went on and so had Greg and Carl. That lasted several minutes and finally Keith showed up and they stopped playing. I know it is different to explain and I hope You feel the unique feeling about that. That showed us that they are real musicians and not kind of puppets. The other unique thing was that Keith broke the organ to pieces. It was great. The organ got through the two shows before but that was to much. Keith rode on it and tore off the top. He threw the top away and after that the whole organ. It splintert to pieces and Keith looked a little bit surprised. But that didn't last very long. He jumped right onto the grand piano and played the Toccata(don't know the right word) upside down? The stage technician put the organ sound into his synthesizer and everything was OK. That was my ELP experience and I would like to share it with other fans. I would have written this letter earlier, but I have this PC since 6 months and didn't know about this great ELP-Homepage. ------------------------------ Digest, mailing address, and administrative stuff to: arnold@iii.net ==\ \ => The same for now...
