The First issue of this magazine is due to be mailed out this week and the editor has been contacted by persons outside the UK who have offered to post articles from "Impressions" onto the ELP Digest, in particular the exclusive interview with Keith Emerson. Whilst the editor understands and appreciates their enthusiasm for our new project, we must point out that all articles in "Impressions" are copyright protected and reproduction of whole or part of "Impressions", whether they appear in the ELP Digest or elsewhere in printed form in the UK or overseas, will result in us considering legal action. The editor feels strongly that all those people who have paid their subscription fees should be able to enjoy reading "Impressions" with the knowledge that interviews contained within are not available anywhere else. When, on occasion, we use material from the ELP Digest, we only do so with the express permission of the item's author (example: Robert Vasseur's report from Keith Emerson's appearance at Gand Music Tech, Chicago September 1995, which will appear in the first issue). So I took it back to get a new copy. They said they didn't have any more. So I called and found out they discontinued it because of the problems. But again I see the footage from Isle Of Wight and Cal Jam and wonder where that stuff is. I am a big Moog fan and would appreciate any pictures or video information on any Moog related stuff. Thanks Bob Shocknesse [ Editor's Note: Back when the "Welcome Back" video first came out, there was a long discussion of remedies to the "bad audio" problem on these tapes. I think some copies with fixed video were re-released and the tape then seems to have gone out of print. I saw Keith and "THE NICE", open for Rick Gretch with "Family", & Alvin Lee with "TEN YEARS AFTER". It was at the Fillmore East in April of 1971. The last time I saw them was at the Garden State Arts Center in Central New Jersey in 1993. I was also fortunate to meet them backstage after the show. Being a drummer myself, I naturally had to go to Carl Palmer first. I discussed his various other groups that I was familiar with, such as The Crazy World of Arthur Brown singing "FIRE". They were all really nice people. Have a great holiday all, and please e-mail back similar ELP stories. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Dec 95 13:57:20 0000 From: "Kyle T. I am a keyboard player of many years and am considering the purchase of one of the new Hammond XB2 portable organs that have been on the market for a couple of years. I am trying to figure out if anyone knows which songs by ELP have featured this instrument?? I know that Keith has used the XB2 (or one of the other Hammond/Suzuki organs) on at least the last two ELP albums. I want that fat organ sound without having to drag around a real B3 or C3 organ. Hope you will consider putting this or some form of it in some future issue of the digest. Once again, I have enjoyed the digest tremendously, and it helps invoke fond memories of the past. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 95 16:38:56 -0800 From: Mark To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Father Christmas Lyrics Hi John, I like your ELP Home Page. Much appreciated... -Mark [ Editor's Note: The lyrics were printed on the "picture sleeve" of the original single (back in 1975) and featured in a full page ad in Billboard announcing the release of that same single. They've all been pushed back to a May release, although Rhino put out a CD-5 featuring their "Father Christmas" in time for the holidays." The "Return" box set is $80 at Colony records in NYC. Also in this issue is an article on 1960's British Psychedelia. What caught my eye was The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown" album cover on the magazine's cover. Nothing new inside. However, there is a two page article on the Nice, pages 36 and 37. Here's a bit on the infamous flag burning during "America" at The Royal Albert Hall. "'America' was the final number in the Nice's set," Andrew Oldham remembered, "and as it neared its climax, I walked on the stage. I had a cigarette lighter in one hand, and as Emerson whipped an American flag out from behind his organ, I flicked the Bic and whoosh. The flag went up in smoke, the single went up the chart (from 35 to 15 in one week)." "O'List was attacked by an enraged American as he came offstage, the Royal Albert Hall barred The Nice from ever darkening their stage again, and a persistent legend insists that Leonard Bernstein banned the single from being released in America, although, he never actually succeeded. The single was released." Karen E. Well, we've all heard the news that Rhino is taking over the ELP catalog since Victory went under. I'm not quite sure what the release schedule will be, but I have a suggestion for LOVE BEACH. I thought it was quite a neat idea that Victory revamped the IN CONCERT album adding enough new material to make it a double disc and changing the title to WORKS LIVE. Why couldn't something similar be done to LOVE BEACH? My suggestions would include changing the title and cover. An appropriate title would be MEMOIRS OF AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. The cover could be a painting of the three of them from the chest up. It would be almost reminiscent of the TRILOGY cover, but facing the opposite direction and they would be dressed in World War I British military uniforms. I'd keep all of side 2 (which is 'Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman') and 'Canario' from side 1. Everything else would have to go. In it's place should be some new works, preferably longer, extended pieces which would maintain the theme of war throughout the album. Didn't I read somewhere that ELP had planned longer works for IN THE HOTSEAT, but were vetoed by the powers that be at Victory? Maybe here is a good opportunity to bring those out. Personally I have always loved 'Memoirs...' and would really like to see it in an appropriate setting. I read somewhere that Keith had fought Atlantic tooth and nail to get them to drop what he considered a dreadful title and cover. He even went as far as to do his own market survey which clearly demonstrated that ELP fans would react negatively to an ELP album titled LOVE BEACH. But Atlantic wouldn't listen. I am personally of the opinion that the album wasn't a total loss and that with the right care it could be given a new life. Besides, I'd love to hear 'Memoirs...' in concert someday. Anyone else have any opinions or feedback on this? Gary ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Dec 1995 17:13:18 +0000 To: arnold@iii.net From: fsteama@macline.co.uk (Mike Goode/Smiljka Surla) Subject: UK availability/return of the anorak I have searched high and low in London for the new Christmas EP. Does anybody know if it has been released in the UK? I guess the answer must be negative, otherwise bearing in mind that I'm writing this on Dec 27th, they have missed the boat somewhat! The next question must therefore be - why hasn't it been released here? The shops do have the current compilation album though. It is exactly the same as a CD I purchased in Hong Kong exactly a year ago! Called 'The Best of Emerson, Lake and Palmer', the 'Hong Kong' version has a more sober cover (in cream and brown to match the original Manticore labels) with no pics of the band and very little info aside from a track listing. It does not appear to be a Japanese release - as an educated guess, I would say that it came from the US... The label is Victory (with a 'Chronicles' logo evident as well) and the catalogue number is 383 480 036-2. How come this hasn't been mentioned in The Digest before? This all brings me neatly on to the subject of an ELP discography. Has anybody ever compiled a definitive list of all official releases? I would be very interested to see a list which included (for example) info on the various labels that ELP have appeared on throughout the world; cover variations; promo versions; format info (what was released on 8-track or what is available on mini-disc for example) etc etc. A bit anorak* maybe, but valuable information nonetheless. Why? Well, over the years, I have picked up a number of odd ELP releases and I would love to see where they fit in the grand scheme of things. For example, I have a couple of Russian vinyl albums, an Italian three-LP boxed set, some great Japanese CD's (some with different cover designs), some amazing early vinyl versions as thick as dinner plates, 8-track cartridges and so on. If no list exists, maybe subscribers could email me with their oddities and I will compile something. Best wishes to subscribers for '96 Mike Goode *Anorak is a bit of UK slang for somebody who displays geekish tendancies verging on the obsessive towards a specialist subject or area. It is not meant to be a term of endearment! Is there a US version? [ Editor's Note: See a note earlier in this Digest for another request for an ELP discography. I'd love some help in getting one developed and put on the web site. And I can provide some info about the exact initial release dates of the ELP Atlantic albums since it was printed on the back of a "radio release" LP that I got a number of years ago. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Dec 1995 22:36:50 -0500 To: arnold@iii.net From: mikeb@mich.com (Michael Beck) Subject: ELP Video Dear John: In the late 70's, I saw a theatrical release of the film made of ELP's Montreal Olympic stadium "works" concert. I just discovered the ELP web site this week and was sad to read of Keith Emerson's problem with his right hand. (not to mention his divorce and, apparent, financial problems) All this after a seemingly successful tour and recreation of the group. Do you know if Keith's physical problems caused there to be no solo piano piece on "In the Hot Seat"? It was sort of a tradition for him to play solo at some point on all their albums, and I missed it.... [ Editor's Note: The arm problem was probably a factor. But the good news is that there actually is a brief (less than 3 minute) solo piano piece on the Japanese import version of "In the Hot Seat". It's not listed on the disk itself but it's there as an extra track (after "Pictures"). It's worth checking out. - John - ] On another, somewhat sad note, Alison Steele,"The Night Bird" on WNEW-FM radio in NYC throughout the '70's recently passed away. I credit her with introducing me and probably most of the NYC area to ELP. She used to start many of her nights by playing "The Barbarian." She also appeared on stage to introduce them when they played Madison Square Garden in 1977 with the full orchestra.
