Prelude ======= Two big (and important) updates... 1. Due to the network problems I'd been having as a result of my office move, I did not receive the mail that would have allowed me to properly credit the "web find" of the Chrysalis site which claims that Tull has cancelled their fall European tour. This was first spotted by "ace" ELP Digest readers and fans extraordinare Karen and Paolo. Their (original) mail to me bounced due to the network glitch while the follow-up from Joe and Steve didn't. My apologies to Paolo and Karen for me not giving credit where credit is due. 2. And there seems to be good news so far on the tour front. It could be that the Chrysalis web site that I referred to in the last issue may not be correct, at least with respect to the US tour. Bruce Pilato (Greg's manager) tells me that, although he hasn't personally talked to anyone in the Tull camp, he has heard that Ian Anderson is still hoping to be able to begin the US tour on time. So, I'm still hoping for the best! - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 13:46:10 -0400 From: John Arnold To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: ELP Digest reader near Boston seeks ride to Tull/ELP show... Hi. If you're near Boston and planning on attending the Tull/ELP show at Great Woods, please read on... An ELP Digest reader (fender@ccs.neu.edu) has tickets to the show but no ride. If there's a chance that you'd have 2 spare seats in your car getting to/from the show, please send Brian mail at fender@ccs.neu.edu and see if you can help him out. Or, if you know of anyone who offers transportation that he could contact, please let him know, too. I've been to Great Woods a number of times but can't recall seeing buses from Boston or Providence there. But maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for any help you can give a fellow ELP Digest reader. - John - ------------------------------ From: Fergusondj@aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 21:35:21 -0400 To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: ELP/Jethro Tull Tour I read your 6/18/96 update in the ELP home page about the Jethro Tull fall tour being cancelled. Thought you might like to know that the June 16th edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer is advertising that tickets for the 8/31/96 Jethro Tull/ELP concert at the E Centre in Camden, NJ will be on sale beginning Saturday, June 22nd. fergusondj@aol.com [ Editor's Note: As mentioned in the "prelude", there are many indication that the US tour is still on! This is good news for those of us fortunate enough to be near one of the tour stops. Pliny's account of the manticore's voice, in particular, struck me as interesting: "Ctesias writes that in the same country [apparently Ethiopia, but possibly India] is born the creature that he calls the _mantichora_ which has a triple row of teeth meeting like the teeth of a comb, the face and ears of a human being, grey eyes, a blood-red colour, a lion's body, inflicting stings with its tail in the manner of a scorpion, with a voice like the sound of a pan-pipe blended with a trumpet, of great speed, with a special appetite for human flesh." Gaius Plinius Secondus, called Pliny the Elder, Natural History, Loeb Classic Library, Book VIII, XXX (75), translated by H. Rackham. Pliny the Elder lived from AD 23 until AD 79. He died from suffocation by toxic fumes from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that took place on August 23/24, when he commanded his ship nearer for a better look. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, incidentally, traces the manticore back to a misreading of Aristotle, who took the word from Old Persian for "man-eater". My guess is that the manticore was a baboon: they are vicious and move fast, have lots of teeth, a face that is more human-like than most animals', a long tail--and a bright red backside. Any other theories? Do we suppose K.E. the schoolboy was forced to read Pliny? Although some of his synthesizer sounds might be described as somewhere between a pan-pipe and a trumpet, the track "manticore" on Tarkus does not, I think, use any such sounds. Anyway, does anybody know who Ctesias was? ELP is my favorite group and music that influenced them or is influenced by them is of great interest to me. And a recent arrival to my sonic input is worth sharing with potential listeners. The German band Triumvirat has already been discussed in previous digest issues but I thought I would add my share to the discussion. I very much enjoy hearing all of the Triumvirat albums. I can hear strong influences from the Nice, King Crimson, ELP and Yes. They are considered a classical-based progressive rock band and were formed around a keyboard/bass/drums type of structure. Hammond B-3 organ and Moog synthesizers are prominently featured. Like ELP, early albums exhibit a concept-piece approach but in latter albums exhibit an effort to make radio-play pop singles. Interestingly, like Keith Emerson, keyboardist Jurgen Fritz also went into movie soundtrack work after the breakup of the band. This is a quick chronological summary of studio albums: 1972 Mediterranean tales 1974 Illusions on a double dimple 1975 Spartacus 1976 Old loves die hard 1977 Pompeii 1979 A la carte 1980 Russian roulette The last 2 are not available on CD. The 3rd is sometimes referred to by people as Spar-Tarkus. CDs of the first 5 seem to be drying up lately. Triumvirat has a home page run by Russ Shaw <75337.3537@compuserve.com>. The new URL address is: http://www.accessone.com/~elias/tvat Additional information can be found there and Russ is a good source for rarities and other information. Re sheet music, I'll vouch for Brent Wood's transcriptions. They're awfully good and will keep you busy for awhile. Which leads me to my main issue. John, have you ever considered a very simple poll of your 200+ subscribers to get a feel for the make-up of the readers? I'd contemplate simple stuff like age, sex, locale, occupation and whether-or-not you're a musician. It might be interesting to see if there's any particular demographic that we all have in common. Since I suggested it, I'll go first: 40, male, atlanta georgia usa, commercial insurance broker, past-professional keyboardist (decided to get into a profession where I could make enought money to afford the equipment!). It might be >>> interesting to see if there's any particular Well, the subscriber list is over 900 now so having the time to do a complete poll would be tough. (Especially since I barely have time to do the ELP Digest and web site now!). But it's always nice to hear about the people who read the ELP Digest. So, if people want to send along short descriptions of themselves and why it is that they gravitated to become ELP fans, I'll trickle those into Digests. My initial guess at ELP Digest subscriber demographics with no scientific basis but based on reading all the "subscribe messages" over the years: about 95% male about 80% US with heavy densities in the Northeast (NY/Boston area) and California areas but pretty much all of the country represented good representation from a variety of South American, European, and Asian countries as well as my North American neighbors: Canada and Mexico. Initially the list was mostly high-tech folks (since they're the ones who had Internet access) but now it's much more evenly spread across a number of professions I'd guess that at least 50% are musicians. It seems that the musicianship demonstrated in ELP has always led to a high number of musicians among their fans. Thanks for asking. I'll put this follow-up with your note in a future ELP Digest. - John - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jun 1996 20:22:15 -0200 From: Filipe Coury To: arnold@dartmouth.banyan.com Subject: http://bliss.berkeley.e.../emerson/fingerings.txt Hello again! I've engineered plenty of studio recordings of drum sets, and the "acoustics" of the voice sounds like it came through perhaps the snare mike. Will Alexander?):- Is there a reason for there being no performance dates scheduled for the state of Texas in general & the city of Dallas (viz. the Starplex?) in particular? This specific venue seems always to feature on the itinerary for most of the major touring bands (including the Moody Blues, Alice Cooper & Kiss in the very near future, for example), so why not for ELP? Especially frustrating for me particularly, is that recently I moved here from Boston, MA, where ELP is scheduled to play at Gt. Woods (identical to the Starplex!) in nearby Mansfield! Maybe I should have waited six months! Such is life, but now it seems as if my only course of action may be to drive for six hours up to Little Rock, AR, if I wish to see them perform (!), unless of course they can be encouraged (please) to add Dallas to their tour schedule ... Hoping to see the band (here?) soon. Good luck with the tour & let us hope that it happens, despite everything!
