Thanks for doing a great job with the ELP digest! Two things! First thing: Rhino has released the ELP CDs in Canada. Saw them last week at HMV. Rhino hasn't done anything to the disks. They are the same as the remastered Victory CDs. No extra tracks like Rhino is know for doing. The only exception is Works Vol. 1 now has white cover like Vol. 2, instead of the original black cover. Is this supposed to make it a collector's item? If you own the remastered Victory, don't bother with the Rhino CDs. Second thing: For some time, many people have been saying what a great album Keith Emerson's Changing States was. I have been disappointed with it since I bought it. It's mediocre compared to other solo albums, even ITHS. Four of the tracks were rerecorded with ELP on Black Moon with superior results. I guess if this album had come out before Black Moon, I would probably like it. So, the CD is FOR SALE. Anybody out there who can't find a copy in the record stores, email me and let me know, it's reasonably priced. The interview was conducted by morning personalities Mason & Sheehan. They are a couple of clowns but they seem to really respect guys like Keith. It sounded like they had a small live audience. There were also other guests that would come and go. Tommy Shaw of Styx was there when Keith arrived. He stuck around for some of Keith's interview. It was actually broadcast on the morning of 4/16 (Tuesday). I was on my way to work when Keith arrived. Things started out with Mason commenting on Keith's shirt - saying that it looked like a bird dropped some...stuff on it. Keith laughed and said he has a pet bird (I think he said parrot). It's name is Smokey. Keith joked that it can sing "Lucky Man" and that he is teaching it the moog solo. Mason joked that Greg better watch out. Keith said that the band would then be called Emerson, Smokey, & Palmer - ESP! I think it was at this point that the ELP recording of "From the Beginning" was played. After that, Tommy Shaw started to strum it on an acoustic guitar that he had brought. Keith whistled the moog solo. It sounded great!! Keith said that ELP will be touring with Jethro Tull beginning in August. He said that he toured with them with the Nice and that he admires Ian Anderson. He said that he just got a fax of the tour dates himself. His surgery was performed 2 years ago. His hand looks like it was bitten by a shark but he thinks he will be in shape to tour. He hopes his autobiography will be out in time for the tour. However, Greg may get really mad at him because he is holding nothing back in the book. It did not sound like new material was being planned for release. However, Rhino is going to re-release BSS with 3-D artwork and interviews with the band. Mason & Sheehan asked how the band formed. Keith told the story of how he was looking for a bassist who could sing. He wanted Greg or Chris Squire. He approached Squire first but Chris did not feel comfortable with lead vocals. At this point, Keith joked about how band names were always being misprinted on concert posters (because someone passed up a poster of the nignt the Nice and King Crimson played together at the Fillmore). Keith said that the Nice were once billed as the Mice. Gary Farr & the T-Bones were billed as Gary Fartbones. Keith spoke of Carl and his band Atomic Rooster as well as Arthur Brown. Apparently, Carl was buying up lots of property in the Canary Islands but he is not doing that anymore. Mason & Sheehan joked that they are pals of Greg's and that they would tell him of Keith's upcoming book. Mason & Sheehan shared an important award with Greg for a concert that they put on for an organization that helps families who have had children abducted. The organization is named after Sarah Ann Wood, a local girl who was abducted and killed. It was a really tragic story that apparently touched Greg and prompted him to write the song Daddy. The concert was taped in Albany and broadcast locally in December of 1994. I was not sure how many people were aware of all this so I thought I would include this just in case. He played ELP songs in that concert. He was backed by an area band that was quite good. They closed the show with Father Christmas - complete with choir and falling snow! It was magnificent. The TV station that broadcast the concert did a whole half hour interview with Greg the morning of the broadcast (it was a Sunday). After Keith came Pamela Anderson's photographer. Keith stuck around for a while. His son was with him. Somehow the conversation led to a mention of Salt Lake city. Keith said they once got arrested there for skinny dipping in a pool after a concert. Keith volunteered his son to help in some of Pamela's photo sessions. Eventually, Mason remarked that Keith had dropped out of the conversation because he was engrossed in a book of Pamela's pictures. Overall, it was a very interesting and informative interview. I was not sure who else would hear it so I thought I would summarize it for you to the best of my ability. ELP forever!!!! See you at the concerts!!! I have seen it here in the San Francisco Bay Area and know the company making this unit is headquartered in Los Gatos, a town 50 miles south of San Francisco. I don't know how widespread this device is either nationally or internationally. This device has a touch sensitive screen running Windows and speakers. It originally had many popular titles of sheet music. Its main selling points are its ability to listen first to the sheet music and optionally transpose it to any key beforehand. You then buy the sheet music it prints. Recently they added the MIDI file capabilties. Since ELP sheet music is so hard to find, I decided to just on a whim try the "Artist" heading and enter "Emerson". Lo and behold came up "Emerson, Lake & Palmer--Fanfare for the Common Man". It is available as a MIDI file. I bought it right away, on a 3.5" disk, only $9.95 and later played it through my 16-bit sound card on my PC. My general rating: 85%. I was very happy to hear most of the solo done (I thought they would have cut off the long middle part of the song with the thumping E bass). My disappointments were that a few riffs were simplified and I seem to recall part of the song was trimmed. But otherwise it was pretty good.
