(There's a mention of this later on in the Digest.) So, I expect things will be heating up soon as the tour begins. (Still hoping that Ian's leg is doing well.) Unfortunately, I'm going to be away from my email in a little while and won't be able to send out a tour kick-off Digest until after the first 4 or 5 dates of the tour. However, I'll try to get another Digest out next week. Then, as soon as I'm back, I'll send out early reviews that people send me of the tour. In keeping with the tradition we've had in the ELP Digest, I'll put tour reviews, set lists, etc. in a marked section of the Digest so people who don't want to know what they're playing won't spoil their surprise. I have two tickets for the performance Sept 6th at Riverbend in Cincinnati. Since I'm moving during that time, and since a show was added in Cleve. I can not attend. What I would like to offer to the digest readers is this pair of tickets (row q) for free. I just want someone else to benefit and enjoy it. The ad states the concert will be at the LB Day Amphitheater (Salem, Ore) on Saturday, September 28. Your (or whomever sent it to you!) Schedule Netsite says the LB Day date is Friday the 27th, and The Gorge is Saturday the 28th. The Gorge advertises in the A&E and shows upcoming concerts, but not that far in the future, so I don't know when/if ELP will be at The Gorge. BTW, LB Day uses Ticket Master; the ad says tickets go on sale 9AM July 20. No prices were listed. I got the latest Digest with the Lake interview, etc. Keep up the good work! I got to meet Keith during the NAMM show in Anaheim, last January, during an Alesis dinner. I even got a pic of the two of us... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 1996 10:26:51 -0700 (PDT) From: Curt Cassingham To: John Arnold Subject: Concert Info Well, you can disregard at least *part* of my last message -- JT/ELP will be at The Gorge on Sept 27, and LB Day on Sept 28; the dates have been switched. I just bought tickets for the 28th (at $40 each!), and the Ticketmaster told me about the dates. I imagine that's safe enough to put into your Schedule. Hey, if you were at Concord Pavilion (that is, if you live in the Berkeley area) for ELP/Bonham in '92, I probably saw you! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 1996 19:57:00 -0700 From: Bill Besterman To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: Schedule Change I just purchased tickets for Tull/ELP at the Gorge at George for Friday, September 27th, 1996. They just went on sale today so I know the date is correct. I don't know what else changed to change this appearance from the 28th. [ Editor's Note: This is a good opportunity to mention that the tour dates have been updated on the web site as people have been sending me updates. I also went to TicketMaster's site and got all the dates for the tour from that. So, I think it's pretty accurate now. Thanks to everyone who provided me with the updated info. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: 19 Jul 96 11:16:49 EDT From: "Plotczyk, Steve" To: John Arnold Subject: Nice sheet music sheet music Those of you who have been hanging on to the dream of having a transcription of "Hang On To A Dream" can now have your dream fulfilled! There is a 1985 book of transcriptions from Germany that includes a "Hang On To A Dream" studio version transcription by Hans-Michael Ducker. And there is a picture of Keith Emerson with the Moog on the back cover. The book has biographical notes (including a section on Keith Emerson) in both German and English. Other transcriptions included are of pieces by Tony Banks, Warren Bernhardt, Chick Corea, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Billy Joel, Elton John, Joachim Kuhn, and Rick Wakeman (Catherine of Aragon from The Six Wives Of Henry VIII). Note that this price is much better on the pocket than the hefty $65 plus S&H for Gulda's original Prelude & Fugue sheet music as posted in ELP digest Volume 6 Issue 5. I'd also like to point out that the phone number from the original post for the source of that (V.I.P. Music Distributors) has changed to (800)272-7820. Lindamac ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jul 1996 16:15:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Shawn McCann To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: Rhino's BSS re-re-reissue I just picked up a copy of the Rhino BSS. Items of note about this release: 1) Rare photos of the band with H.R. Giger at his studio 2) Informative essay, runs from page 3 to 11, mostly about the circumstances around the recording of BSS. This is what the ROTM booklet should have been like (don't know if Rhino's ROTM has the same booklet as Victory's did, but Victory's was not up to the level of this). 3) "Karn Evil 9" has four separate track numbers, rather than one long track with indexes (how many people have CD Players that can access by index, anyway?). The first impression, like Victory's issue, does not fade out/in like the original LP, but the track number changes at "part 2" of the first impression. 4) Tagged on to the end of the disc is an interview track. Keith and Greg apparently were recorded in a studio, while Carl was interviewed by phone. I don't think the interviewer heard on the CD was the person who actually interviewed the band members. In fact, the guy does a pretty poor job of it. To my ears it sounds like he's rush-reading through a script, at sight, no preparation. But the band's input is really great. 5) The cover. Don't crack this jewel case! The front has a texture to it, like on 3D postcards. Behind this clear, ribbed (how appropriate, nudge-nudge) cover is a card with two images on it that change back and forth when you move your head. It's the front cover and the inside cover (woman with metallic hair), perfectly synched. 6) Apparently this one was remastered BY RHINO, as Bill Inglot's name appears in the credits as having done the task, along with someone named Dan Hersh. Haven't heard it at home yet. Can't wait to compare it to the Victory reissue tonight. 7) Minor point: The font used on the spine of the jewel case differs from the other reissues. However, it's used consistently throughout the booklet and on the back cover. Call me weird if you must, but I just had to have this when I saw it, although I also have the special Victory version with the die-cast replica of the original album's cover and poster (which, by the way, is missing from this one), and still have a Japanese vinyl pressing, and also most of the album is on ROTM. Maybe "sucker" is the right term for someone like me? Somehow, though, I don't think I'll be the only one in this situation. -- Shawn ------------------------------ Date: 24 Jul 96 10:00:49 EDT From: "Plotczyk, Steve" To: John Arnold Subject: Re: America: The BBC Sessions CD America: The BBC Sessions CD Good news for fans of the Nice! Track 3 quotes "I'll See You In My Dreams" on piano at the start. Track 5 quotes "Rondo a' la Turk", "America" and "Norwegian Wood" on piano at the end and does not have horns. Track 4 has Roy Harper on vocals. Track 6 is a studio version without the orchestra and the lyrics are more distinct on this version. The 1st and 5th bridge are not part of it and the 3rd bridge has a "church organ" feel with different piano solos. Track 7 is a studio version. Track 8 has some great piano/organ interaction in it. The vocals on tracks 2 and 9 are distinctly different from the regular versions. Track 10 has an unusual intro and I would make a comparison of what has been done here with "Get To You" to what was done to "My Back Pages". It also is split into a piano 1st part leading into an organ 2nd part. The "Take A Pebble" ostinato can be found embedded in the piano part too! A full liner page of Nice info is included but I wonder about the mention that the American flag was OFTEN burned at the performances of "America". I really like tracks 4, 5 and 8. I'm not sure what Keith is doing of which you disapprove! Do you mean his music should become "safer". I rather like it that as late as 1989 he managed to continue writing in a hard-edged style on the Inferno soundtrack. Seemed harmonically as adventurous as ever. The more of that the merrier! > > But when I discovered the Griffin reissue of "Changing States" >(disappointing that so much of it turned out to be early versions of "Black >Moon" stuff but worth it for the orchestral "Bolero" and "Summertime" >alone), I decided to give some of the "Hot Seat" songs another chance, >basically to fill out a cassette for the car. > > After a bit, it occurred to me: Why not mix them a bit? > I believe that the Changing States track was in its original version here(?). It contains a section not in the Black Moon version, but which is referred to in the opening chords. Its removal in the Black Moon version means that the opening is never developed, which gives the piece a less satisfactory form. Whenever Emerson writes in a style which is not just lots of interesting themes strung together one after the other, he is writing better, and should be encouraged! If you remove bits of tracks which have been well thought out formally, that doesn't improve them, so I would have thought it would be better NOT to cut from one snippet to another. -- Peter Wilton ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 1996 00:13:19 -0400 (EDT) To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com From: bblanton@ash-uky.campus.mci.net (Beth Blanton and Jim Morman) Subject: Gary Moore's Career Diane Chin asked about Gary Moore and what he's been up to since the Greg Lake's 1st album and tour. I had only heard of Gary from the Lake album (what a scorching bit on Nuclear Attack!) until last year. I write for a music magazine that covers world, folk, roots and Celtic music (as well as anything else that they happen to send for review). Last year I received the new album by Gary Moore. I don't recall title of the album and I've since lent it to my nephew in an ill-fated attempt to prove there is better guitar work than Metallica (no, it didn't work and I still haven't gotten the disc back yet). It seems that Gary has turned back to his original love: the blues. After making two or three studio albums of original and traditional blues material for electric guitar, this latest album is a live set. And boy is it hot!!! Recorded during a British show, it has some absolutely blistering solos. If I remember the promo material correctly he played with some hard rock band for a while before going solo. Anyway, if I dig up the promo stuff or get my CD back (ha, ha) I'll let you know more. You may check out your local record store since I recall seeing the live CD at a local Camelot. As mentioned a while back, the first 5 albums have been reissued in the UK by Castle Communications. They all have stickers on them advertising that they are digitally remastered and have faithfully restored artwork. Hmmmm...is it not true that the 'old' Victory issues were remasters? Does anyone know if these are the same remasters or CC's own attempt at remastering? And as to the artwork, there seem to be a number of differences between these new issues and the Victory ones. As it is possible that Victory got it wrong and that CC has corrected it, I'd be really interested to know which of the following variations is closest to the original packaging for the albums: - The first album now has a very green cover with pink writing and no band picture inside. - Tarkus now has color inside artwork instead of the black and white of the Victory CD. - Pictures...now has empty frames on the outer artwork and the inside is the same as Victory but in color. - Trilogy also seems to have changed color and does not include the woodland scene with multiple ELPs. - BSS seems to show more of the original artwork than before. This is most noticeable at the bottom where the ELP logo is now completely in the picture. Have a nice day...
