ELP stuff MASTERMIND Euro Tour / Live CD offer Re: ELP Digest V7 #5 (Tempest) Prelude ======= A lot of news since last time. I'll try to summarize... * The Greg Lake collection 2-CD set from Rhino is now out * ELP's tour plans have shifted since the rumors started earlier this year. It now appears definite that ELP will tour Europe first and, then, South America. Read on for a report from a Carl Palmer drum clinic on why ELP won't be touring the US and Canada this year. Specific tour dates are starting to trickle in to me and I'll do my best to keep the ELP Digest and the web site up-to-date. * A King Crimson reunion appearance of sorts appears to be happening in New York City on April 26. * Keith Emerson is slated for an appearance on the Microsoft Network's Rifff Music show in mid-May. See below for details. And so it goes. My apologies to those who still have news and discussion submissions in my queue. I'll work on getting more issues out soon as people get psyched for the European and South American tours. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: BRUCETUNE@aol.com Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 08:15:59 -0400 (EDT) To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: Greg Lake's Management Looking for non-US Prog Rock or Collect Mags John: Can you put a notice on the ELP website that Greg Lake's management is looking for cool and/or important publications that cater to prog rock fans and/ or record collectors OUTSIDE THE USA. Here's little info about Rifff and to get connect to MSN if you're interested. Each week Rifff features a different artist and his/her/group's original tune. Users can "play" with the composition in two portions of our site. One is like a music video, the other is like a mixing console. The site also features an in-depth interview with the artist, part of which of is Real Audio, and on Thursday night the artist or group chats with users. I received a fax on the matter from DGM's PR people and I asked if it was ok for The Artist Shop to post it and was told yes, so here goes! The fax I received contained the following information: Original members of King Crimson reunite for Epitaph listening party at HMV Record Stores in New York City In a rare appearance the original 1969 incarnation of King Crimson will reunite on April 26 at 3 p.m. at HMV Record Stores, 86th & Lexington, in New York City for a pre-release listening party of EPITAPH, a new King Crimson double CD boxed set due out on Discipline Global Mobile on April 29. The new collection features previously unreleased and recently found studio sessions, live highlights and a complete concert by the 1969 original King Crimson line-up. The band was recently reunited for the first time since 1969 during a similar playback party in London on March 15. Now U.S. fans will be able to interact with the four original members (Robert Fripp, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles) during the HMV Record Stores event. This information is also available on The Artist Shop's bulletin board at . Also in our Discipline section we now have the DGM sampler, Sometimes God Hides, and Fripp's new album, That Which Passes. And so opens "The Greg Lake Retrospective:From The Beginning", Rhino R2 72627. Inside is a thirty five page booklet full of information and vintage photographs. The entire booklet has been written in a brief, refreshing way by Bruce Pilato. You'll find the early information about Greg and pre-Crimson bands fascinating. Of his childhood, Greg says, "We were very poor...ice used to form on the inside of my bedroom windows." Says Ken Hensley of The Gods, of his bandmate Greg Lake leaving, "He was far too talented to be kept in the background." Robert Fripp said of the first King Crimson, "You don't have to believe in God, but a musician believes in music as if it were God. And one would have to say with that band that something took place outside of the band..and the words I would use is that music leaned over and took us into it's confidence." Concerning Crimson's music, specifically "21st Century Schizoid Man", Bruce Pilato adds "He (Greg) sang the song's opening line, "Cat's foot, iron claw...", as though his life depended on it." Most of the information concerning ELP we know. However, read it! It goes on to explain Greg's solo work after ELP, the Geoff Downes collaboration, "Ride The Tiger", up to current ELP and solo work. The two Ride The Tiger tracks are "Love Under Fire" and "Money Talks". "Love" opens as a gentle ballad with a dulcet guitar in the background. Is this Greg, or Geoff? Then drums kick in, and Greg sings "Love under fire, we stand in the flame. Now and forever, after the rain..." "Money Talks" is an early, very electric version of "Paper Blood". Heavy drums with reverb. A harder edge than the ELP version. Keyboard stabs. When asked about his contributions, Greg says ""But most of all", Lake adds, "I'm fortunate enough to have been able to give something to music fans worldwide that they can really enjoy. I did it back then and, I hope, I'll do it for many years to come."" There are extensive notes about each track. I've listed title, source of recording, and artist(s). CD I 1. "The Court Of The Crimson King" (Including "The Return Of The Fire Witch" & "The Dance Of The Puppets") from In The Court Of The Crimson King, King Crimson 2. "Heart On Ice" from In The Hot Seat, Emerson, Lake & Palmer I found only one error in the booklet. On page 19 is a photograph that is titled ELP(1973). Wrong! I have that photograph on the cover of my 1972 Japan Tour program. It's from 1971 or 1972. They all look so young, and those bellbottoms... Greg wraps up the album in an eloquent manner. "I have always tried to make music that comes from the heart. Otherwise there is no point in it at all. Whether it was the intensity of my work with early King Crimson, the richly textured classic music of ELP, or a soulful acoustic ballad, I've tried to keep the music genuine and with a spirit capable of moving people's emotions. If you can do that, then you've really accomplished something." Thank you, Greg. From the beginning... and on to the future! Karen E. During this party, which was for the European manager of FAN ASYLUM, Julia, while everyone was pissed I grabbed ROTM and let rip on the cd player with ELP's best. Sally suddenly joined me in choosing the tracks saying that she hadn't heard ELP in years. As we were inflicting ELP on the G'N'R soaked mass that were at the party, Sally nonchaltly mentioned that Keith Emerson had given her piano lessons during the '70s when she was a teenager and refused to comment on my request for Greg Lake info. I read in the current issue of Impressions that ELP have recorded a new version of the Karelia Suite but and that the guitar parts had been worked out but not recorded because they couldn't get Trevor Rabin into the studio. If the guitar parts are already worked out why can't Greg play them? He seems to play less and less guitar with ELP nowdays and just sticks with bass and vocals. Does anyone on the list know why that is? Also Greg produced all of ELP's greatest works so why don't they let the guy produce their output now? I think we should get a petition together on the Digest list to insist that Greg is reinstated as producer on all future ELP projects. Here's hoping! Very popular, entire shops full of pens for sale, "Get A Pen", etc.. Got everywhere Greg told me about personally, including two days at The Palace At Versailles, thanks Greg! That's some "cozy little Chateau in the Woods" the King and Queen of France had. Got to all the places Greg sang about in "Parisian Walkways", like Champs-Elycees, St. Michel. Ask for water in France and I got a pitcher of Boujelais instead... In France, there is no such thing as "No Dogs Allowed" or "No Smoking". Dogs and their calling cards are everywhere. I never saw so many kinds of dogs in my life. There are "Tobacc" signs everywhere. Even a Brassierie (sidewalk cafe) has a wall of tobacco products for sale. The only "non fumeur" (no smoking) sign I saw was in the breakfast room at the hotel I statyed in, in Paris. No wonder Greg collects pens, brings his dogs to the studio and smokes, he's being very French. ELP and prog rock is hard to find in Paris. I did find one store in The Sorbonne that had an entire section just for Progressive Rock. Got a couple of French and Swedish Prog cds, French versions of John Wetton, Yes and Buggles records, and the European edition of "The Best Of ELP" with the alternate cover of floating hourglass'. I can't remember the name of the store, but I can get it for anyone who is interested. Email me. Virgin Megastore at the Louvre Carousel had Japanese imports of ELP albums for sale. From The Beginning:The Greg Lake Retrospective Hits Streets April 15. -- Rhino Records salutes one of rock's most noted singer/songwriter/musicians with FROM THE BEGINNING: THE GREG LAKE RETROSPECTIVE. This first-ever collection of the best group and solo work by the famed ELP member hits the streets on April 15. The 32 tracks span a quarter-century (1969-1994) and more than 12 albums, and include tracks from his days with King Crimson which have never before been released on a compilation. Many of the tracks on THE GREG LAKE RETROSPECTIVE make their U.S. CD debut. The two-disc set will have a suggested retail price of $29.98 and will also be available from RhinoDirect at 1-800-432-0020. Lake was actively involved in compiling the set, which includes the best of his work with seminal progressive groups King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (both of which he cofounded). Also featured is the cream of Greg's solo work from his two 1980s Chrysalis Records solo LPs; a blistering live version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" with Gary Moore on guitar; as well as two previously unreleased solo tracks: "Love Under Fire" and "Money Talks." Longtime friend and personal manager Bruce Pilato wrote the extensive linernotes, which include numerous quotes and entertaining insider stories placed alongside many archival photographs in the expansive 36-page booklet. Keyboardist Keith Emerson, guitarist/vocalist Greg Lake, and drummer Carl Palmer joined forces in 1970 and became one of the first and most popular of the "supergroups" that dominated rock in that decade. ELP recently toured the U.S. in the summer and fall of `96 with Jethro Tull for the first time in three years. The band played to packed houses and standing ovations from fans who have remained loyal since the 1970s. This was the best 5 dollars I have ever spent in my life! Carl Palmer was bright cheery, and seemed very happy to be here. The clinic lasted about 2 hours and Carl played 2 very hot solos and a quick snare solo. Some news comes from tonight's clinic. The first and foremost is ELP WIL be touring this summer! rehearsals start in May and the tour begins in June. They will play Spain, Germany, several stops in Europe and then South America and Mexico. NO U.S. dates will on the tour, and as Carl explained, "We will not play the States this year as we have new music for '98 and we wouldn't be able to get back in if we played this year". He also told the crowd of about 100 that they have 10 or 15 minutes of new music and will be working on more in the near future. Carl also spoke of his surgery 18 months ago for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and complained once that his hand hurt. He was asked about the famous stainless steel drum set and explained that Ringo Starr is still in possession of them but they will be moved soon to the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in Cleveland, Ohio to be displayed with Greg's guitar. He gave no real time table for that to happen but did allow that the plans had been in the making for some time. He was asked who made the drums (this will clear up some previous questions in newsletters) They were made by British Steel from 1/2" stainless and part of the reason for the weight was a simple fact that British Steel used half inch stainless rather than 1/4" just to, as he put it, "do Carl a good turn". He signed autographs until the last of us left and then went on to his motel. I hope the '98 tour happens! Harry T. Since you have a YES link on the ELP web page, how about putting the TRIUMVIRAT link http://www.accessone.com/~elias/tvat on the ELP web page? The number of TATW TRIUMVIRAT digest readers and web visitors increases dramatically each month now with the fine enhancements over the past year. ELP/ELPowell/Three/Keith Emerson are discussed regularly each month. The links there go to all ELP/individual pages/vendors/etc. Triumvirat was the only consistant group that sounded like ELP and had the same fans during the 1970's. It would be a shame for younger ELP fans to never hear of the earlier TRIUMVIRAT albums now on CD and at select lp stores. The group even admits to being influenced by the NICE and Jurgen Fritz emulating the style of Keith Emerson as a classically trained progressive keyboardist. You would be helping the cause of getting at least a reunion CD album if not a concert tour by the former members through your support by putting in a link. The former members are amazed at the renewed interest on the web site, especially by USA fans. All Triumvirat Video is urgently being sought be myself and the web author. I enclosed the stuff in November and said, "no I want RTV Communications", figuring I've been cheated out by it closing. A week ago, after a year and a half, I actually got a refund from LYRA PRODUCTIONS/AMERICA, INC 5300 NW 33RD AVE Suite 113 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309 They said that they bought out RTV Communications and I got lost in the shuffle. From an ELP/Emerson solo fan in St. Louis, MO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FROM: Toohey, Joseph DATE: 03/10/97 15:44 TO: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com SUBJECT: Emerging bands influenced by ELP, NICE&ELP CDs John, I've been reading the web page and digest for well over a year now. On the Web page-Emerging bands influenced by ELP, the MONOLITH group has not gone to an existing page for quite a few months now. This was a band with no label and said send $6 check to Bill Hamer (group leader) addressed as Monolith Cassette I received a 30 minute cassete with 3 rock Bill Hamer singles type songs, and a long progressive P.O. Box 2001 Apocalypse Concept piece. I really enjoyed Clifton,NJ 07015 the music and suggest that most ELP fans would like this tape. You might want to remove the link unless MONOLITH has moved to some other web page. As far as Par Lindh link CDs, "Gothic Impressions" is great. The track of "Nigh on Bare Mountain" is fantastic and I'd swear it was Keith playing if I didn't actually see the insert credits. Par Lindh's "Rondo" is great sound but quite a short length for the price (yes I got it anyway even though the track "Rondo" sounds exaclty like NICE or ELP or THREE or ELPowell). ELP fans will like the sound but be unhappy with the short amount of time on the CD. Par Lindh's "Bilbo" CD is for ELP fans that also like new age (Yanni, Suzanne Ciani, Windham Hill Artists, John Tesh etc.). It has long playing time and I was satisfied with it because I enjoy most keyboard oriented groups, rock, progressive, and new age. Bill Berends usually comments about his group Mastermind in the digest, which is another emerging ELP influence link. Fourtunately I didn't buy the volumes in order. ELP fans will like VOL I reissued with two new tracks, VOL III, and VOL IV. Even though there is no keyboard, the synth strings/guitars,etc., sound at many times like Keith's synth keyboards, & the drums are virtuoso in the style of Palmer, Powell, Bruford, etc, and the instruments even sound better when there are vocals on the various tracks. Fortunately I bought Vol II last and do not like hardly any of the heavy metal tracks, loud electric guitars; not much vocals on this CD. No offense to Bill Berrends, but I'm glad that VOLS III & IV went back to the sound of VOL I. If I would have purchased VOL II first, I certainly would not have tried the other three volumes. Most of these CDs were from MMMusic.com on the "where to but Mastermind CDs" link or CDNow.com. By the way, I hear that THREAD was promoted at ELP/TULL concerts through MMMusic.com. I purchased it through MMMusic.com and must say its the best prog CD of 1996. The music is like ELP/KANSAS/TRIUVIRAT/TULL/THREE/ELPowell/etc. with fantastic vocals, keyboards, drums. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this CD. Has anyone else tried the other emerging ELP influenced band link CDs by other groups? How was the sound? ***************************************************************************** **** The following answers a lot of questions in my original E-mail below *** *** Best Works tracks were listed and discussed in ELP Digest V4.18 *** *********************************************************************** BEST WORKS COLLECTION / KEITH EMERSON / One CD - Not the best Quality *** Manhattan Collection has shorter Prelude to Candice as on MurdeRock Is Prelude 24 (Bach) something different, another title somewhere else? Stores can order it for around $38 lowest price that I've seen. It is only one import CD? Is there anything on it that is not on "Inferno","Honky","Best Revenge", "XMAS" "Changing States", "Night Hawks", "Murderock", "Manhattan Collection", "La Chiesa"? **Track listing researched above after this question was asked** I am pretty sure that the 4 Emerson tracks on Manhattan Collection are all from other albums, but the rest of the music on that CD is quite good also. Finally I stumbled upon WPMusic.com on the internet which has "Murderock" CD for $19.17, and a bunch of NICE & ELP selections at various prices. *** out of $19.17 stock, no more available except high Japanese price *** What is ELP's "Cut the Organ" 2CD expensive Import? ***WPMusic.com response: This is a 2 CD live recording at Hammersmith Odeon in 1972. Songs include: hoedown, tarkus, the endless enigma, alan freeman theme, the sheriff, take a pebble, lucky man, piano improvisation, pictures at an exhibition, nut rocker, rondo. It was never released in the USA.*** What is NICE "Collection" CD Import? *** Still don't know the answer *** What is NICE "Colour Me Pop" CD Import? *** See Digest Back issue V6.05 for full track listings/information *** What is NICE "Immediate Years" 3CD expensive Import? *** It's the BOX SET talked about in several back issues recently *** I have all the original NICE lps that I bought in late '60s/early 70's. Is this all just stuff released under other names? (except ELP "Cut Organ"?) *** No, Colour Me Pop, America-BBC Sessions, Cut the Organ, are not previous releases, see Digest Back issues, Box Set is essentially all old stuff*** There is no difference between NICE-America BBC Sessions CD and import with just plain NICE BBC Sessions CD except the price. *** see ELP Digest V6.18 for tracks/info *** From an ELP/Emerson solo fan in St. Louis, MO. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Apr 1997 21:09:40 -0400 To: bberends@mosquito.com, rberends@k2nesoft.com From: Bill Berends Subject: MASTERMIND Euro Tour / Live CD offer MASTERMIND News Release - April 9, 1997 Re: European Tour Dates / Limited Edition Live In Tokyo CD Greetings friends! Mastermind is going to Europe in May/June to perform at several festivals and clubs in England, Holland, and Germany! At the end of this message are dates and places for our European shows. As you may know we just played in Japan in January which was a wonderful experience as well! But going to Europe is a different ball of wax than Japan and in order to generate some tour support we have agreed to let Cyclops/GFT (our European label) press a Special Limited Edition CD of MASTERMIND LIVE IN TOKYO. This offer is first being extended to the people on this mailing list. More info and a look at the cover can be had on our WWW site at: =20 http://www.mosquito.com/~bberends/mastermind/bootleg.html The following is the text content from that page: Cyclops Club presents: MASTERMIND LIVE IN TOKYO Special Limited Edition Compact Disc This Limited Edition pressing was recorded live at ON AIR WEST in Tokyo, Japan on January 23, 1997. Only 1,000 copies will be pressed by Cyclops/GFT of the UK and sold directly to the end user in an effort to bolster the band's touring budget and help Mastermind travel to far away places to play. Perhaps even to your home town one day. This disc will NOT be sold through usual dealers or retail outlets and will only be made available exclusively by mail order from the Cyclops Club catalog, from the band itself (by mail order and at live shows), and by special arrangement 200 copies are being made available in Japan directly though the concert promoter, Poseidon Productions. We cannot forget our Japanese fans! The album is a high quality bootleg style recording from a blend of house mixing console output and ambient room mics. The album runs 69:12 minutes in length and features works from all four Mastermind studio albums recorded 100% live (unlike most live albums) during the band's recent trip to Japan. We chose this concert not because it is the best Mastermind performance ever, nor is it the best live recording ever made, but it marks the special occasion of our Japanese debut and Poseidon's first progressive rock concert in Tokyo. It's a bit raw, but it's ballsy as hell! Although a Mastermind Live album has yet to be released, this is NOT an "official" release from the band and should be looked upon as an authorized bootleg of sorts. Accordingly, no promos will be given out, no review copies given away, no DJ freebies, nothing. This Special Limited Edition release is for dedicated Mastermind fans and collectors *only* and must be purchased by anyone and everyone who would like to own a copy of this rare one time only pressing. As we all know, progressive rock is not supported by large music corporations or the US government, so it is therefore necessary to generate tour support in other creative ways. In the coming months Mastermind will embark on its first trip to Europe and this disc will help subsidize some of the expenses involved. We ask you for your help in bringing the music to the people and hope you will order a copy today.=20 Ordering information and track listing is provided below, but order SOON because the price will surely rise as supplies dwindle. We hope some of you will *order now* to help with up front expenses of our European tour (such as airfare - 5 different flights must be booked to make it happen). All orders received before May 1st will get personally autographed copies! You will sleep better at night knowing you did your part to help advance progressive rock around the world. Help keep live progressive music alive, order today! Track Listing: MASTERMIND Live In Tokyo A Cyclops Club Special Limited Collectors Edition CD 1. Child of Technology (5:44)=20 2. Haven't heard that one, but I do have the Tull tribute album where Keith plays "Living in the Past." Tempest does a track on that CD as well.
