So, I'm holding off and will send one or two more issues from here at work before I cut over. Thanks for your patience. And, to those who have asked for more frequent Digests or possibly the option of a "bounce list" to get mail/news even quicker, I promise that I'll discuss those options after I'm settled into whatever new account I go with. News of a few more US shows (Las Vegas, NV and Ventura, CA) here. And I'm getting word of more Europe dates and early view of the South America tour. As mentioned below, I'm just gathering the bits and piece people send me. So, please check on the web site (http://bliss.berkeley.edu/elp) between Digests and let me know if you've heard of new or corrections to the dates listed. To keep you all from clicking on your browsers right now, I've included the list from the web site as of this morning in the first message in today's Digest. Also, as far as I know, Keith's still having his appearance on the MSN Rifff show this week. Hope all goes well with that. Till next time, - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: John Arnold Subject: Tour Dates so far... June 16 - Z93-FM show featuring ELP and Kansas, Coca-Cola Lakewood Ampitheatre, Atlanta, GA. Tickets only available from Z93. (I think listeners have to win them.) Hopefully the boys will some day acknowledge your fine efforts. There were several comments in this month's edition that I thought bear some discussion. Firstly, Greg's lack of electric guitar/lead guitar playing as of late. I don't know why Greg hasn't played electric in a while, but the band is definitely missing something without it. The lead guitar on Karn Evil 9 was tasty, well-played, and just MADE that tune. Perhaps he's just lost his lead chops (he certainly can still play that acoustic!), or perhaps this is one of those bizarre mid-life decisions that I can't fathom. I remember in the reunion video from '91, Greg said "ELP manages to rock even without electric guitar", and was quite proud of that. Well, ELP may still rock, but I for one WANT to hear some lead guitar from time to time. I long for the ELP of old that would experiment with all manner of instruments and sounds. So if Trevor Rabin is indeed slated to lay down some axework for the boys, that's fine by me. I can think of no better guitarist to accompany ELP. Secondly, there have been references to Carl's carpal tunnel syndrome, Keith's tendinitis and drinking, and other stuff which of course only proves our boys are human. I have carpal myself, and it sidelined my bass career. So I know what a drag it is--especially playing music of ELP's complexity. Could all this have something to do with the bland, homogenized, and simplistic "In The Hot Seat?" Someone wrote in ELP Digest that the boys plan on moving back in a more progressive direction, which is of course great news (they played Bitches Crystal live in '96, and it was mondo cool--a great sign). But if they're to keep their fan base (not to mention ever win any new fans again) they must tune in to what's going on "out there". Bands like Nine Inch Nails experiment with odd, dark new grooves and synth sounds and sell millions. Well, this was once ELP's domain. But as evidenced by the tepid Eurorock on "In the Hot Seat", ELP has voluntary thrown in the towel in the innovation arena. Similarly, bands like Dream Theater have stolen the young hard rock/prog rock fans. This should also be a vital part of ELP's fan base. Yet my friends who are into Dream Theater never even listen to ELP. Why? They want a darker, edgier, more guitar-based sound. Which brings us full circle. In conclusion, all I can say is I hope the boys blow our doors off with the new album in '98, and that it goes platinum. I'm rooting for them. --Jim Cirile ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 10:50:13 +0300 From: Jyrki Rautkorpi To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: ELP Digest (Pete Sinfield) Does anyone of the readers know more about Pete Sinfield? Thanks in advance, Jyrki Rautkorpi [ Editor's Note: Pete Sinfield himself contributed an entertaining review of his career in an ELP Digest back in late 1994 (see http://bliss.berkeley.edu/elp/digest/back-issues/1994/elp-digest-4.19 for the full text). Pete and Greg Lake worked together when they both in King Crimson and Pete re-surfaced with Greg as collaborator for Brain Salad Surgery, Works Vol. 1, etc. Also, Pete released a solo album on ELP's Manticore label back in the mid-1970s that is now available under the name "Stillusions". A really burning, burning question they must ask?" Gently asked Bob Fripp of the audience at the King Crimson Epitaph Listening Party, April 26, at HMV in New York City. In reply, Bob got "What is life?" "Why don't you guys get together and tour?" "Because", answered Bob quietly, "We have a band already around called King Crimson. Each iteration of the band is unto itself, unique. Can you imagine the confusion of having five King Crimsons? I would be in all five at once." With each answer, Bob smiled and gently looked each questioner in the eye. Bob is a very eloquent, quiet and gentle man, warmly received by the audience. Met with thunderous applause by the hundreds of fans packed into HMV, Bob led the band, followed by Michael Giles, Ian McDonald and Greg Lake. The cd was playing loudly. It was for sale and many had it later autographed. Where was the missing member? Bob replied, "Pete Sinfield has been laid very low by illness recently or he would have attended this event." All four remembered their time with King Crimson fondly. Of the meteoric rise of King Crimson, it was Ian or Mike who said "It just boggled my mind, how one week we were in a club playing to only fifty people, and the next week there were over a thousand to see us." "Why did it take nearly thirty years to put this cd out?" asked a fan in the audience. Bob explained about the legalities and technical issues about putting this cd together. "...The technology to do it has only existed for fourteen to sixteen months." He went on to explain how some of the original tapes were stolen from the studio and have never been found. Bootlegs have helped restore the audience applause between songs. To conserve tape, much of the audience was not recorded. Even if you have the bootlegs, by all means buy this cd. They've done a wonderful job at restoration, especially on the clarity of Greg's vocals. Epitaph, DGM 9607, is a two volume, two cd box set. Included is a sixty page full color booklet and an order form for volumes three and four. The track list is: Volume 1 BBC Radio Sessions 1. 21st Century Schizoid Man 2. In The Court Of The Crimson King 3. Get Thy Bearings 4. Epitaph Fillmore East, New York, 21 November 1969 5. A Man, A City 6. Epitaph 7. 21st Century Schizoid Man 8. Mantra 9. Travel Weary Capricorn 10.Improv - Travel Bleary Capricorn 11.Mars Volume 2 Fillmore West, San Francisco, 15 December 1969 1. In The Court Of The Crimson King 2. Drop In 3. A Man, A City 4. Epitaph 5. 21st Century Schizoid Man 6. Mars A lengthy autograph session followed . Many had "In The Court Of The Crimson King" signed. For each fan, Bob would draw a comic-strip balloon from the mouth and write a little something in it, then autograph it. I had my 7.5" reel-to-reel of the album signed. Both Bob and Ian were amazed and unaware that a reel-to-reel version had ever existed. I said they were very, very rare. So, in my little balloon, Bob wrote "I'm Rare!", and signed it. Many wonderful words were exchanged. We greatly thank the staff of HMV for not enforcing the "No unauthorized photography" rule. An Epitaph is for an ending of a sort, but as one fan put it, "You'll soon be at thirty years, what's next for King Crimson?" The audience replied, "Another thirty!!!" with a deafening cheer. I saw the Celtic rock band Tempest recently at a Newport, KY show and again the following night at Dayton, OH. I had the opportunity to speak with Lief Sorbye, the lead singer and mandolinist, and guitarist Robby Wullenjohn about various subjects. They are going into the studio in May for their new album. Robert Berry (Three) is again producing and playing keyboards. No indication of Keith Emerson on this particular album. Lief said that their previous album 'Turn of the Wheel' was to have the keyboardist Ken Hensley (I think that's right) from Uriah Heep (help me out folks if I'm wrong about that), but once they saw that Berry was such a good player, they canned that idea. Berry suggested that put a heavy-weight support cameo on the album and called up Keith to see if he'd help with a track or two. The band never actually met Keith. It was all done via phone. Keith couldn't come to the studio since his girlfriend was planning a big birthday bash for his 50th. So he recorded the intro and solo bit for 'The Barrow Man' in a nearby studio and sent the tapes to Tempest. Lief said Keith was quite a gentleman and great to work with (long distance of course!). Anyway, just wanted to pass that along to folks. Go out and catch Tempest, great live show, great progressive Celtic rock and a band worth supporting!
