Although it may be hard for you to believe, I've been very busy behind-the-scenes with upcoming changes to the ELP Digest and web site. This will probably be the last ELP Digest from this account. I think I've got just about everything moved to my machine at home (where the domain name, address, etc. won't change) and I'm hoping the next issue will be sent from there. This change will make it easier to send ELP Digest materials since I'll have an elp-digest and elp-digest-request account, etc. Once that's in place, I'll take a poll and see if people want me to send out more frequent digests, allow a "non-digest" mode, etc. Also, I want to warn you that the ELP Digest site is preparing for some gradual re-design to make it more modern and easier to navigate. You'll see some of these change in a little while. To accomplish this, there will be times when the ELP web site might look odd or be unreachable. These should be very intermittent problems and should only occur late at night (Eastern Time - US) when I "push" the design changes to the server. More news about this will appear on the site as the work progresses. Because I've been starting to re-design the web site with new tools (rather than the old hand-edited approach that I've used since the beginning), it's taken me a while to get the 1997 tour list updated on the site. For the next few weeks, I'd suggest that you follow the links to Keith Emerson's or Greg Lake's sites where they've been updating the tour information, too. I think this will be an exciting summer of ELP activity and hope these new designs will help makeit easier for us to stay in touch with all the ELP news and discussion we want. The following are the phone numbers for the promoters and/or ticket orders for the Eastern Europe gigs: Budapest (promoter): 35 (1) 269 1177) Katowice (promoter): +48 (32) 511780 Prague (ticket agent): +420 (2) 2481 4020 Prague concert is at an indoor venue with reserved seating; so is Katowice, as far as I know, with a capacity of 8000; Luxembourg is at an ice skating rink and without reserved seating; all German concerts are held outdoors and without seats, according to the local promoter. The July 12 gig in Ulm is not taking place, even though it's listed on Greg Lake's Website. I have confirmed this with the German promoter. There are 8 gigs in Spain pencilled in between July 17-27, but I'm sure someone else will post you the exact list (mine is not complete yet). The Kassel gig is as part of a 2-evening event, Tangerine Dream playing on June 27 and ELP on June 28. Entry costs: 45 DM for Tangerine Dream, 55DM for ELP, or 77DM for both, and tickets for both concerts can be ordered on the number which was published in the previous issue of ELP Digest . A warning to anyone who's planning to come to Germany for the Kassel gig: you must book your accommodation NOW, as all hotels in town are almost fully booked up for that weekend, because of Documenta X which opens the week before. The telephone number for the tourist information in Kassel (who will at least try to find you a hotel in or near town) is: +49 (561) 707 7163. It might already be too late by the time the next issue comes out, but you can try anyway... Acoording to that listing, the dates referred to in ELP DIGEST #9/97, seems to be accurate as far as Europe goes, although it's stated that dates may be subject to change. So in conclusion; that list seems to be pretty official, and that works for me. 2) Lars Steinar Ansnes asked if there is any chance of an ELP show in Oslo/Norway; Sorry, according to the above mentioned tour list, the chances are a little less than slim, at least for the moment. Ticket sales will start in Holland on Saturday June 7th, early morning. In 1992 EL&P sold out the Gongresgebouw in The Hague (2000-2500 seats) twice. Although the Paradiso hosted many great names in rock (Nirwana, Stones), it belongs more or less to the club circuit and has a capacity of 800-1000 spectators. Expectations are the EL&P concert will sell out within less than an hour. (It's like putting a whale in a fish bowl.) The prog rock special in the February issue of MOJO, then in April they had "Keith Emerson remembers The Moog" and previously they have had Carl Palmer remembering his days with Arthur Brown. Q Magazine had a whole page with some hilarious stuff from an ELP roadie sometime last year. And of course there's Record Collector who has gone on about "the prog revival" for over a year now and who reguraly features some info on ELP. Check out the last issue(May) of Record Collector with a "prog special" which has an excellent report on the King Crimson event (the British one, which apparently Peter Sinfield attended). The Epitaph box-set apparently consists of four CD's although the third and fourth CD are only available through mail-order, since Fripp didn't consider them to be of sufficient sound quality to be on general release. Greg says that "I suppose that ELP is a bit pretentious" but also makes some interesting statements on the tour and upcoming album. He talks about Keith's arm operation and on the subject if they'll tour Britain he says "I hope so!". Greg also comments that the next ELP album will be "conceptual". It almost sounds too good to be true. Let's really hope for continued publicity for prog rock and ELP, who most likely have noticed the renewed interest in progressive rock and will take the opportunity to record some great new material! Emersons music and its influence on the musical scenes Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 01:54:05 +0200 Dear Mr. Arnold, for everybody who is interested in the music of ELP my thesis "Keith Emerson's music and its influence on the musical scenes of the following time", which is written in German, will now be available. It deals with the topics that are summarised by Prof. Dr. E. Kreft in his expert opinion: "Proceeding from a biography and the beginnings of "progressive rock" the author analyses selected works of Keith Emerson. He concentrates on the one hand on "large conceptional compositions" and on the other hand on central elements and phenomena (rhythm, "classical compositional techniques", adaptation and improvisation). The emphasis leads to the approach to establish K. Emersons influence on the musical scene of the following time. The author tries very successfully and with a professional application of analytical methods to discover new ideas in a large musical genre for which there are still hardly any analytical methods nowadays. On the basis of a wide range of secondary literature, which are mainly interviews and specialist journals, the author develops a comprehensive image of a musician and composer who can be placed "between the worlds", he is considered a rock musician who is also concerned with jazz and "classical music". The thesis is a very successful attempt to approach the different positions of classical and popular music and to come to a new view on modern world music". The thesis includes 100 pages. A great number of notes as well as schemes, an adaptional list an a detailed list on literature are added. Because of copyright reasons the interview of Keith Emerson, to which is often reffered in the thesis, cannot be made available. The thesis offers a wide range of information for both ELP fans and professional musicologists. The bound thesis can be optained under e-mail: brandh@uni-muenster.de for the price of DM 42, C.E.D., postage included. I'm interested that you dub it "Eurorock". To a younger friend of mine brought up in the post-punk era, ELP's image and sound is geared to an "American" market! I must admit I have to agree with him - I can't really see anything "Euro" about In the Hot Seat. >Similarly, bands like Dream Theater have stolen the young hard rock/prog rock >fans. This should also be a vital part of ELP's fan base. Yet my friends who >are into Dream Theater never even listen to ELP. Why? They want a darker, >edgier, more guitar-based sound. Which brings us full circle. Isn't the ubiquity of the "guitar-based sound" part of the legacy of New Wave? Keyboards fought their way in to rock towards the end of the 60's, and were expelled again 10 years later. THE distinguishing feature of ELP was that it was not guitar-based. What distinguished it from everything else for me when I heard the first album was that it even messed around with 19th-century concert piano sound. Is there any video at all from The Nice?? If the music was made to be taken to the stage (as was clear from the ELP tours, especially BSS, and the Welcome Back video), then I hope you all can put something together to show the FULL talent of the group (which transcended the outstanding music alone) - something to demonstrate the full impact of an ELP concert, complete with the power of both music and visuals. We need that, desperately. By the way, does anyone know what exactly was going toward and at the end of "America" on Elegy (or KE with The Nice), when it sounded like cables were being snapped??? However, we must also remember that ELP doesn't own the copyright to the California Jam video and probably some others. I welcome the enthusiasm as it helps everyone understand that there is a demand for products like these. And, if enough people offer to put their money "on the table" for REAL products rather than bootlegs, I'm hoping that we'll see real releases of some of these performances some day. Thanks for writing and showing that there is a continued interest in these things. - John - ] [ Editor's Note 2: I think the sound at the end of "America" is the slapping around of the springs inside the reverb unit in the Hammond.
