Due to the need to get some of this information out quickly, I'm sending this "the old way". Note that there's been a show added in Amsterdam. Due to this, one fan is trying to sell his tickets to the Dortmund show. Another reader would like to meet other Digest readers at the Las Vegas show. And there are a few reports that the Ventura shows have been cancelled (though this remains unconfirmed so check with the venue before changing any plans). All the details are below. Finally, I'm starting to ask that you send ELP Digest mail to my new e-mail accounts that are set up for this purpose. ELP Digest administration, new subscriptions, address changes, etc. should be sent to: elp-digest-request@reluctant.com Submissions for the ELP Digest should be sent to: elp-digest@reluctant.com Though these new e-mail addresses look like addresses for an automated system, I can assure you that I will personally read each one. I know it will take a while to get used to the new addresses but try to change any aliases, etc. that you have set up for me to use the new addresses. Thanks. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jun 97 11:35:43 CST From: "Sjoerd van den Berg" To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: ELP in the Netherlands !!! All things happened so fast. First I'm thrilled about the tour in general. When the first dates came in I was even more excited. And then at the highlight they also plannes Amsterdam. The result of this is as follows: I had just ordered tickest for Dortmund (as you could all have read in the last Digest) when the news of a concert in Amsterdam came out. I got hold of tickets for Amsterdan, but it was not possible for me and the organisation to cancel my tickets for Dortmund. And as a student I can't afford two concerts :-( So I have got two tickest for the "Out in the Green"-festival in Dortmund on July 5th, featuring ELP, Fpreigner, Art Garfunkel and Barclay James Harvest. I have found them very interesting and informative. In fact, I found out about the concert I will be attending from the digest I am going to the Emerson, Lake and Palmer concert in Las Vegas on June 12. I wondered if anyone from the digest or the web-site (or you!) might be there? I'd love to meet some fellow ELP fans, since most of my friends aren't too interested in ELP. If anyone is going to be there, they can e-mail me, and we'll meet up, have a few beers, and wax nostalgic about the "ol' days" when progressive rock was "cool". To: Subject: Re: Subject: Burning for Buddy Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 23:01:17 +0200 Hi Dan and fellow Digest readers. In answer to your question regarding Carl Palmer's absence on the Buddy Rich Memorials I may have an answer: As far as I know Carl was never invited to perform on these tribute concerts. The main reason for these could be that Carl Palmer has a longtime conflict with the main sponsor of the event, cymbal manufacturer Zildjian. The exact reasons for the conflict are beyond my knowledge, but I remember Carl once mentioned in an interview that he vowed never to touch or use anything with the name Zildjian on it. --I doubt if the Zildjian company has sleepless nights about this, but i think i can imagine Carl's point...-- Coincidence or not, all the appearing (or at very least most of them) drummers are longtime Zildjian users. As some of us may know, Carl has used the Swiss cymbal make Paiste for as long as the early ELP years. So, maybe even if he was invited to play, he would probably turn down the offer anyway, because of the waving Zildjian flags all over the place... I know for a fact that Carl once performed (as a youngster) in Buddy Rich's bigband, and they once were even sort of friends. The word "friend" should be used lightly, when used with regard to good ol' Buddy, since he was known not only for his unique technical drum talent but even more for his notorious agression... In interviews Buddy has stated many times that if a musician in his band would make a mistake he would not hesitate to respond with a "pay attention motherf****r" or similar statements. Not an easy guy to get along with, it seems. The fact that Buddy Rich never told Carl he was any good or any bad as a drummer should be taken as a compliment for Carl, as Buddy had very little good to say about "rock-drummers". I hope this sheds some light on why Carl Palmer never appeared (and most likely never will...) on the Buddy Rich Memorial concerts. Think of the apocalyptic images of Karn Evil 9, and think of what is depicted on the cover and denoted by the title... As for deliberate catalog numbers, the Yes album "90125" was originally meant to be called "Yes (90125)" -- an eponymous album representing a new start for the group, and the cat. # to distinguish it fromthe 1969 "Yes" album. Of course, the catalog number took on a life of its own, and nobody calls it "Yes." The live-album followup was "9012Live" and had catalog # 90126.... ----------------------------------------------- John Nash nash@chem.wisc.edu ----------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 17:29:54 -0700 (PDT) From: "www.eskimo.com/~telical/" To: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Subject: ELP ITEMS for sale ELP ITEMS for sale I have a copy of the ELP Video "Welcome Back My Friends." It includes footage/recordings of ELP performing Pictures at an Exhibition, Rondo and one other track. If memory serves this would in fact be ELP's debut public performance. I just got the John Wetton biography, and it is excellent. I just acquired the program from the 1969 Isle Of Wight Music Festival, where The Nice and King Crimson appeared. It is in extremely fragile condition so I wont be making copies of it. Bob Dylan headlines the program, followed by The Nice. A black and white photo I haven't seen before of the three graces most of the page. Each band gets a brief writeup. "Since their first appearance The Nice have strode onto international distinction. Keith Emerson has been hailed as the "best organist in rock"; Brian Davison compared with Ginger Baker; bass-player Lee Jackson binds together the two. One of the first bands to quote broadly from the classics, jazz and rock, they built a huge following during their residency at the Marquee Club. The band is equally at home in the concert hall and this autumn they will be appearing in New York's Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. A new album, "NICE" (Immediate), is being released to coincide with the Festival." King Crimson is in the back, they have a half-page, most of it filled with a common black and white group photograph. Pete Sinfield is not listed with the band. Does anybody know what "IT" is? "I remember reading in "IT" a few months ago, of a new group wanting to do gigs cheaply for nice audiences. The name was King Crimson. The idea was nice and we'd heard of their ability, but through lack of time and insight I didn't make any moves to hear them. I regret it considerably and now apologise to friends. Since then things have gone pretty rapidly for them, appearances at Lyceum, "amazing thing" via John Peel and regularly at the Marquee can't be bad. The music is strong and unified, coupled with a tremendous appreciation for each other's ability. They are undoubtedly incredibly competent." Have a jubilant June all, Karen E.
