Noddy's Puncture ELP Tribute Band: Trilogy Prelude ======= Hi. And a belated Happy New Year. Sorry for what I think is the longest delay I've ever had between issues. I took a break over the Christmas holiday and have been catching up on my "real" work. Now, I'm finally getting the first issue of Volume 8 out. To make it easier for me to accommodate the shrinking size of the blocks of free time I have at home these days, I'm going to try to catch up by sending smaller but more frequent issues. So, I think I'm going to try to keep each issue down to about 15-25 messages per Digest. But don't worry about me flooding your mailbox. I'll try to never send more than one a week. I hope everyone finds this to be a decent compromise as I juggle my work, family, and ELP activities. You'll also notice some changes to the ELP Digest web site as I slowly but surely try to give it a more modern look and balance the "look" while keeping download times as small as possible (since I know most of us connect over modems from home). (Coming soon... a link to the ELP "web ring" of ELP-related sites.) You'll find this issues is a smattering of new topics. Don't worry if you don't see your submission to the Digest here. I'm going through all the messages and balancing the topics and discussion to try to make sure that each issue has something of interest to everyone. Thanks a lot. And I'm sure we're all hoping that 1998 will be a great year for ELP and for all of us ELP fans. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: estazz99@intonet.co.uk, on 1/12/98 10:04 AM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Impressions, Issue 5 Dear John, I would like to inform all subscribers of Impressions that Issue 5 is a bit delayed and will now come out at the end of February. I'm not sure if this subject has been discussed before, but I received a copy of the new "Live In Poland" CD a couple of weeks ago... excellent stuff ! As Bruce Pilato told me, it's supposed to be an official release only for Poland ! It was recorded on June 22nd, 1997, in Spodek, Katowice, Poland. It was ELP's first concert in Poland ever. The CD was released by Metal Mind Records, and licensed from Manticore Records. The booklet is excellent ! 16 pages, full of colored photos of the same concert, really really beautiful stuff ! It shows Keith "attacking" his Hammond L-100 organ on stage, and takes of Lake and Palmer also... Now, the song listing: - Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression - Part 2) - Touch And Go - From The Beginning - Knife Edge - Bitches Crystal - Creole Dance - Honky Tonky Train Blues - Take A Pebble - Lucky Man - Tarkus/Pictures At An Exhibition - Fanfare For The Common Man/Rondo The sound quality is excellent, like an official CD must be. And even on the pieces in common the effect of Carl on LIP not using much electronic percussion, gives a very different (and in my view better) result! And the arrangements differ significantly. LIP provides the following "unique" pieces: * KE9 First Impression pt. 2 (second half) * Touch and Go * From the Begining * Bitches Crystal * Honky Tonk Train Blues * Take a Pebble * Mass (Tarkus) * The Great Gates Of Kiev (Pictures at an Exhibition) And in common there are * KE9 First Impression pt. 2 (on LIP played in full) * Knife Edge (not much different) * Creole Dance (a bit different) * Lucky Man (different - full band arrangement on LIP) * Tarkus (LIP different arrangement, piano solo & Mass included) * Fanfare for the Common Man/Rondo (different on LIP, Orff's Camina Burana) So if/when Manticore releases the LIP-show (or a different from 1997?) there are no danger of it being superfluous after the Albert Hall CD. It's a live gig from nearly 30 years ago, so lo-fi is the word. Greg Pilato in the sleeve notes subtly suggests that Greg Lake's performance may not be the most confident - and it's true there are some horrendous bloopers on the bass. Not just from GL either - the CD is worth buying to hear Keith Emerson make a couple of gorgeous splats! The Moog - notoriously - loses tuning in seconds; it makes you realise just what a pioneering performance this was. Carl Palmer is magisterial as ever - although so young. Greg's singing is fine. But if you ever had any doubts about KE, just listen. Unquestionably the man is a genius. Everyone at IOW (except famously John Peel!) must have been utterly blown away by this performance. It is the one of the best items that have been published about ELP for the last years. * First of all, and most important, is that we are able to listen to the whole performance. I don't think they played longer than 63 minutes. The CD lasts for 68 minutes (5 minutes bonus interview with ELP). * The sound is very good. Taken directly from the soundboard. * We can listen officially for the first time a live version of The Barbarian. * Fantastic 36 minutes version of Pictures, which has the mood of that recorded in Newcastle for the official release. * Take A Pebble is played beautifully * Very nice cover in brown colors with the map of the isle and photograph of the band + 6 pages booklet inside with details about the festival and ELP. * However, the best of all is to see the resurgence of the MANTICORE label, with the mithological creature inserted on the CD, which reminds me of the times of BSS and WBMFTTSTNE. I think that our dreams are going to come true and we are going to see the release of live material from the glorious days on the new manticore label (King Crimson has already done it on its own label). If you haven't this record order it right now. It has nothing to do with the King Biscuit double CD-we are tired of listening to the same live material for so many years. On the other hand, I have been reading the back issues of the digest and completely agree with those Italian people that wanted to see released in English the keyboard Japanese book with all the interviews with Emerson. Can anybody do anything about it? Elias Casado (Basque Country) ------------------------------ From: , on 1/20/98 11:00 AM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Keith in LA in January! Marc Bonilla, with special guests, Ronnie Montrose, Glenn Hughes, Steve Pocaro, and Keith Emerson. I would just like to clarify something, Glenn Hughes is one of the most amazing singers I have ever heard. My wife and I were about 2 feet from the stage at the Billboard which is one of the best clubs to see a show here in Los Angeles. Glenn Hughes who sings with such passion and heart and soul, has never ever sounded better. For all of you know it all's, that don't think Glenn Hughes is one of the premiere vocalists around, let me make this very clear ''THERE AREN'T MANY SINGERS WHO COME CLOSE TO HIM'' Marc Bonilla is a excellent guitar player and his band Joe Travers drums, Bob Birch, bass, Mike Wallace, guitar, Roth - keyboards (didnt catch his first name) were on fire, great musicans. Highlights of the evening - Cover me, Whiter Shade of Pale, I Dont Want To Live That Way Again, Tarkus, Hoedown, Rock Candy, White Nois, American Matador, some new Glenn Hughes tunes, some amazing dual guitar leads, from Mike Wallace, and Marc Bonilla. Overall I havent enjoyed myself more at a show in a very long time. I have never heard such an intense version of Tarkus, it blew me away. I just want to say this show will be very hard to top. Ronnnie Montrose is still a monster guitar player. The Hittmann's rating for this show on a 1 to 10 scale, I must give this show a 9.5. This show had great music performed by some legends and Icons of rock, and the crowd was so into the whole show, it was simply a pleasure. On the CD there was one song by Greg Lake: "From the Beginning". It was recorded in KOME studios, july 92 (time 2:33). This version is very nice, somewhat jazzy, just guitar and vocal. To be honest I prefer Greg Lake's quieter side to his straight forward rocking songs. Because of this, I found most of his solo CD's a bit disappointing (sorry rockers!). I received Greg's "Word Sculptures" book yesterday. It's an earthy terra green, like a moss in a forest, with shiny gold titling, "WORD SCULPTURES Lyrics From The Musical Life Of Greg Lake". The first edition is signed by Greg in a deep pink fountain pen. It is cleanly printed on a heavy beige stock. The frontispiece is a recent black and white photo of Greg with light white opaque tissue paper over it. Greg has written the introduction. Filling it are lyrics that we all know and appreciate. The songs run from King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man", through several solo and ELPowell songs ending with ELP's "Heart On Ice". We all know the story behind "Daddy", but what caused Greg to conjure up the images behind "21st Century Schizoid Man"? The book does not go into the stories behind the lyrics. The single color page of album covers is oversaturated with color and could use some lightening. The delicate white lettering of the "Works I" cover is very hard to read. All but three photos I've seen before. One is a recent one with Greg between two stage lights that look like wagon wheels. One page of photographs are entirely new. There are two wonderful photos on this page. One is of the original, handwritten lyrics for "Still You Turn Me On". A verse that was crossed out goes like this: "You turn your back it all goes black. And my nerves crack I wanna kill you. Oh but I love you." Now that could be an interesting writing trigger for a Writer's Workbench exercise. The other photo is captioned "One of the unusual methods Greg Lake and Pete Sinfield used to write songs together involved drawing cutout words randomly and trying to arrange them into song lyrics.". Shown is a mug with a seagull design on it and spoon handle sticking out of it. No telling what's inside. A candle lit, burning brightly. It lights the way of the envelope of words, spilling its light as the words spill from the envelope. The words on the wood grain of the table are illegible because they are so small. Would that there was more of this. Maybe in a future edition? Let your imagination go with the images in these lyrics. Above all, have fun. Read them, sing them, remember the pleasure we've all had listening to them and think of the pleasure of what is yet to come. "In closing, the words contained in this book are not just the storylines to my music, they are often the images and events that changed my life. For me, music and lyrics have been my ultimate form of expression. I hope you enjoy reading them, as much as I have enjoyed creating them. - Greg Lake, March 1997". They were interviewing one Bill Dunne. Bill, it transpired, was retiring from his business of repairing musical instruments for the rich and famous. "So" asked the presenter, "you will have been kept busy by the likes of Pete Townsend and Richie Blackmore?" "Oh yes" replied Bill "I did a lot of work for them, but my most frequent customer was one Keith Emerson form the inappropriately named Nice, I would repair his Hammond organ one day only for him to return the next day with it wrecked again. I got so fed up in the end I used to refuse to repair it in the end, it was so disheartening." The interview was much longer and I got the impression from the tone of voice that Keith was not Bill's favorite customer. The question is therefore, does Bills retirement and refusal to continue repairing Keith's Hammond explain the dearth of ELP UK concerts? By my reckoning, ELP have performed only 8 concerts in the UK in the last 23 years, all in 1992. Regards .....Graham ------------------------------ Subject: Mussorgsky, Pictures From: , on 1/19/98 10:38 PM: To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Hi there, I just saw a documentary on Mussorgsky's "Pictures". It comprehended a thorough analysis of the entire piece. They didn't just talk about the differences between the western music and the typical Russian style, as depicted in "Pictures", but discussed the entire piece. All parts where easily explained. They even showed some of the original paintings Pictures was written about. They all originated from an exhibition of a friend of Mussorgsky, called Hartman. When they showed the drawing of "The Hut of Baba Yaga" I was surprised. I should have known it, because in earlier years I had read some Russian fairy tales. Baba Yaga was the evil witch in most Rusian fairy tales and she used to life in a hut on chickenlegs. Yep, a simple house standing on the beautiful legs of....chickens. They explained that Mussorgsky actually wanted to compose a piece on Baba Yage herself as opposite of "The Great Gates...", which of course is a heroic piece and is full of the "Good". Hence there only was a painting of the hut of Baba Yaga, he had to cope with it. So he put a lot of "Evil" in it (which I think, makes the piece outstanding). Another interesting fact was that the entire pianopiece, that's what it was, of half an hour was composed in just 20 days. The first full orchestration was made 50 years later, by a Frenchman (Ravel). Which is a little bit strange, because Mussorgsky never had been a big fan of western composer and their binding rules of "how to compose decent music". They shortly mentioned ELP as well. They didn't gave a judgement about any arrangements at all. So, now info on that. The whole story was told sitting at a grand piano. It was rather impressive to see the (classical) pianist perform parts of "Pictures" during the interview. He mentioned something about the piano being the only instrument abstract enough to play "Pictures" on. His remarks on that matter combined with the fact that there is a lot of rhytm in "Pictures" may explain why, IMO, the ELP version is just perfect. I am not a music-historian, I just got this info from that program. The show was a Dutch television production so very little chance somebody outside the Netherlands will ever see it. But hopefully there are more TV-stations that want to make documentaries on Mussorgsky. So next times you here "Pictures" and you arrive at "The Hut of Baba Yaga", think of a house on chickenlegs !
