ELP Digest Monday, 6 April 1998 Volume 8 : Issue 4 The "Mars" Edition Today's Topics: Cozy Powell Dies in Auto Accident Cozy Powell is dead Deep Purple, ELP, and Dream Theater: August 1998 Tour in August?!?! Possible tour w/Deep Purple ELP tour US-tour ELP and Deep Purple - Summer 1998 US tour with Deep Purple EQ magazine article What do ELP fans want to see from the tour? Keith plays in L.A.; also why no ELP on the BBC? Prelude ======= A quick digest due to some late breaking news. We are saddened to hear of the death of Cozy Powell whose presence in many rock bands (including his stint in Emerson, Lake & Powell) made a mark on rock music in general. On a more upbeat note, it's looking like there will be at least a small scale ELP tour this summer as ELP joins Deep Purple and Dream Theater for a "shed tour" of some venues in the Northeast US in August. At this point, I don't know how extensive the tour is going to be. But I'll get a schedule out as soon as I can. As you'll read below, one reader says a schedule is emerging on the Deep Purple site. And, in keeping with my new pledge to offer smaller, more frequent Digests, I also grabbed a few other postings from the queue to round out this hastily prepared edition. Thanks to those of you who have sent mail to feedback@reluctant.com to let me know how I can make the Digest better. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: John Arnold , on 4/6/98 10:57 PM: To: arnold@reluctant.com Subject: Cozy Powell Dies in Auto Accident I received a phone call from Will Alexander this evening. Will wanted me and other ELP fans to know that he had just heard that Cozy Powell died in an auto accident earlier today. I'm sure you'll join me and ELP fans worldwide in keeping Cozy and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. We'll miss you Cozy. - John - P.S. Though I don't have all the details or a full schedule yet, it sounds like ELP and Dream Theater will be appearing with Deep Purple for about 20 dates or so in August, 1998. I'll keep you posted as I hear more. - John - ------------------------------ From: , on 3/16/98 12:55 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Tour in August?!?! It's Deep Purple." Slated for a May 15 street date, Abandon is Deep Purple's 24th studio release since their 1968 inception. Unlike 1996's Purpendicular, which Payne called a "soft, transitional work," Abandon hearkens back to "classic, heavy Purple." Classic, except for the absence of guitarist and co-founder Richie Blackmore. Following a nine-year hiatus, Blackmore rejoined Deep Purple in 1984 for six albums, only to fly the coup again following the release of 1993's The Battle Rages On. "He quit, thank God," Payne said. "He left, much to the excitement of the rest of the guys." Deep Purple is in negotiations with Warner Bros. for Abandon's domestic release, and the album will be distributed by EMI outside of the United States. The band will embark on a shed tour in August with Dream Theatre and ELP sharing the bill. No tour dates have been announced yet. (Isaac Josephson)" -- Trond J. He said that both GL and CP have agreed to open for Deep Purple during a brief US tour this summer. KE, however, has not yet committed. The promoter said that, unless ELP gives them a firm committment soon, Deep Purple will probably replace them on the tour with Ted Nugent. If things do work out we here in Connecticut will see ELP outdoors at the Meadows Music Theater in Hartford. Thanks, Dan [ Editor's Note: I heard today from someone in the ELP camp that this tour is happening. The DP site is constantly updated (unlike some other groups', not to mention any names!) so it's worth checking their pages for tour dates. There's an excellent & informative article/interview with Keith's Emerson's technician Will Alexander in this month's EQ magazine (vol 9, issue 3. It tells about the keyboard rig on their most recent tour. Fascinating stuff! Just thought I'd pass that along! Eddie J. ------------------------------ From: Steve Hall , on 3/25/98 10:33 PM: To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Subject: What do ELP fans want to see from the tour? As a call to arms is required, a new topic, hopefuly started before the chaps release their new album and then tour with it. What do 'we' the discerning ELP Fans want to see from the tour? A digest member posted in V8#3 about the Hammond wrestling, but what about the music? Do we want a 'Full' rendition of Tarkus? Do we want a stretched rather than shrunk version of Pictures? More Moog, or more of a switch to the modern synths? Get Keith to stop playing a certain little piano solo? Get your comments comming in, and this should spark the digest back into life!!! [Sorry John for the e-mail barrage?!] Steve ------------------------------ From: CClarkpcb , on 3/14/98 10:20 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Keith plays in L.A.; also why no ELP on the BBC? Had the good fortune to catch Keith play a club gig in Los Angeles recently. Guitarist Marc Bonilla, who played on Keith's "Changing States" solo CD, and his band were the main performers, coming out first to play a series of instrumentals for half an hour or so. They were then joined by guitarist Ronnie Montrose for a few of his numbers, then singer Glenn Hughes for some of his, before Keith was introduced to loud applause and the group launched into a full length version of "Tarkus" (no vocals). Bonilla's group were highly proficient in executing the piece, and as if "Tarkus" wasn't meaty enough as a three piece, you should have heard this version which included two guitarists in the mix. It must have been a challenge to learn this complicated piece of music and the musicians were thankfully up to the task. Next the band went into "Hoedown", with halfway through a harmonica player walking out on stage, adding a solo, then disappearing for the rest of the show! Everyone then came out at once to have a go at Poco's "Whiter Shade of Pale" and a long version of the Allman Brothers classic "Dreams" featuring a tasty Keith solo. Good gig, good time, feel free to do it again Keith! Changing the subject - I have noticed the past few years some of the seminal British groups have released CD's of music they recorded for the BBC back in the late 60's and early 70's, such as Led Zeppelin, the Yardbirds, King Crimson and Yes. Does anyone know if ELP ever appeared on the BBC, or if not, why not? Just curious.
