First, the second Hermetic Science CD, "Prophesies," is now available. It contains a very interesting bonus track: a 19-minute version of "Tarkus" for solo piano, which I performed live at the Shannon Center for the Performing Arts, Whittier, California, in 1992. A couple of the band tracks are also somewhat ELPish, especially in the vein of the band's more avant-garde early output (think "Toccata" or the instrumental sections of "Tarkus"). Interested persons can consult the Official Hermetic Science Web Site for additional information. I have been making substantial progress on the ELP book and now that the Hermetic Science CD is out, it shold go even faster. I was gratified by the amount of very useful material that Digest subscribers sent me after my post this past spring, and there are now just a few items that I'm still very much hoping to procure. These items are as follows: 1. Chris Welch review of ELP's Isle of Wight performance 2. MM and NME reviews of ELP's debut albums 3. Rolling Stone review of "Tarkus" 4. MM "Stale Salad" review of "Brain Salad Surgery" I will be most grateful to anyone who can help me track these items down. The title is 'INSIDE TRACKS: A FIRST-HAND HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC FROM THE WORLD'S GREATEST RECORD PRODUCERS AND ENGINEERS', the publisher is Spike/Avon Books, and included is an interview with producer Eddy Offord in which he talks about ELP. You can read more about the book at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0380807459/qid%3D936829995/002-3925367-2071026 Here's the blurb... Behind every classic pop record is a musical mentor whose job it is to coax the finest performance from an artist, while a technical virtuoso captures that unforgettable sound for posterity. In this book, the great record producers and engineers come out from behind the control room glass to talk about their work with popular music's most legendary performers. Bestselling author and journalist Richard Buskin interviews more than sixty producers and engineers, taking us in their own words on a multi-decade musical odyssey ranging from big band, jazz and folk to rhythm & blues, rock, pop, punk, disco, metal, alternative and every other nook and cranny that has brought exciting performances together with an experienced recording hand. We meet the people who recorded Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Paul Simon, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, and more-and find out what those sessions were really like. Here is a very personal history of popular music told from a vantage point that may be new to us, but not to the many musicians who have labored in the studio: here is how it felt to help them make history. ------------------------------ From: GRAHAM SEAMAN , on 8/28/99 8:13 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: ELP/Yes tour news from Greg Lake site and ELP/Jim Davidson news Hi All! Just to bring your attention to postings on the Greg Lake website, made on 20th August 1999. See the 'What's New' and 'Any Questions' sections. Indicates that both ELP and YES management are trying to bring everything together for spring/summer 2000 - Greg agreed to rejoin the other two to make this happen. The posting also refers to Greg's solo album and his production of an album by Jim Davidson (comedian and TV personality). Which brings me on to....two snippets of JD / ELP news. JD appeared recently on Room 101, a TV programme where celebs try to convince the main presenter to throw away various things they dislike into 'Room 101'. JD wanted to throw away Motown music (his preferred listening being stated as 70's progressive - mainly ELP who were quoted to be "a waste of electricity"). A snippet of EMO throwing the L100 about from The Manticore Video was shown - the presenter in charge stated that as this was predominantly 'nothing but acoustic feedback', Motown would not be disposed of! Lastly, I believe JD appeared on ITV's 'Des O'Connor Show' during the last few weeks, and he sang a version of an ELP song (my colleague did not catch the title, and after I had sung to her for about half-an-hour was still no wiser. However, as the mention on Greg's site of the JD speaks of his remake of 'Watching Over You', I guess it probably was that one. "Many of you are curious about the much rumored YES / ELP joint tour. The tour was originally planned for August - November 1999, and all three members of ELP were exploring the idea of reuniting for the tour ( which is something both bands had long wanted to do). Logistics and time frames could not be worked out, and the tour was prematurely announced this summer. Management for both YES and ELP are now trying to develop the tour for spring/summer 2000 ( which is ELP's 30th Anniversary) Greg Lake remains active in his solo career, but has agreed to re-join Keith and Carl for the ELP/YES tour if all the variables can be worked out to everyone's satisfaction and if he can work it in to his schedule for next year..... In it there is a several page interview with Glenn Gottlieb interviewing Rick Wakeman concerning Yes, The RETURN TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH album, and the upcoming Emerson/Wakeman tour. Apparently Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson are very good friends! In the interview Wakeman tells the story that Keith Emerson flew over from California to have dinner with Jim Davidson and Rick Wakeman. Davidson mentioned the fact that it was sickening that Emerson and Wakeman did not play together. Emerson and Wakeman said: "He's right you know!" So the plan, according to Rick Wakeman, is to come out and do a tour of "grandiose plans" next summer(2000). Because of Rick Wakeman's health problems it may be his "swan song project". Then a live album would be culled from the tour. And after that a studio album is to follow. And I quote Rick Wakeman: "It's going to happen, because we've had so many meetings. And Keith and I are in total agreement about how it should be done. And we get on extremely well! Once again, there's no use in Keith and I getting together, and when we do come to do a record, a record company saying, 'well, we want a hit single.' Sorry guys, we're fifty. We're centenarians between us. We're not going to do the wheel chair boogie." In the interview Wakeman says that he is going to take RETURN on the road(conditions permitting) up to Easter of next year and possibly beyond. and I quote Wakeman again: "Then we're going to slot in a tour with Keith. Just to see where [it] goes from there." This then is the current news from the final issue of YES MAGAZINE. jim campaigner@usa.net James Dusewicz ------------------------------ From: "skulker1" , on 8/14/99 7:47 AM: To: Subject: Synthesizer pioneers celebrate 30 years in the Moog For what it's worth . . . Plus it's good to see Emerson and Moog working together, that's for sure!!!!! Thanks, TedO ************************************************************************** Yahoo! News Entertainment Headlines Friday August 13 8:58 PM ET Synthesizer pioneers celebrate 30 years in the Moog By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two pioneers of electronic music are marking 30 years of synthesized sound by endorsing the latest marriage of the piano and computer. Robert Moog, maker of the Moog synthesizer, and Keith Emerson, keyboardist of the progressive rock trio Emerson, Lake and Palmer, appeared together Thursday for the unveiling of a computerized interactive piano. The instrument -- the Van Koevering Interactive Piano -- was designed with Moog's help by his longtime collaborator, David Van Koevering. The demonstration of the interactive piano illustrated how far electronic music has come in the three decades since the Moog synthesizer entered the mainstream of pop music. On one side of the room sat an ungainly stack of modular circuitry and patch cables perched above a wooden keyboard -- a vintage Moog like the one Emerson first played in public in 1969 and for the solo he recorded for the band's 1970 hit ``Lucky Man,'' one of the first synthesizers on a rock album. ``It was a very temperamental instrument to use on stage,'' Emerson said, before agreeing to tickle the electronic ivory once more for old-time's sake. Several feet away stood the polished, ebony cabinet of a baby grand piano, with a touch-screen color monitor built into its music stand and a state-of-the-art computer and digital sound system tucked under the hood. Officials from Van Koevering's Iowa-based company put the instrument through its paces, showing off its ability to convincingly replicate the sounds of 128 different instruments. The digitally mastered sounds of everything from a flute to an acoustic guitar can be played from the keyboard or be produced as accompaniment, mixed, recorded or altered at the touch of the computer screen. Powered by a Pentium II microchip, it comes with software titles for composition, performance and interactive music lessons. CDs can be played and recorded from the piano, and music played at the keyboard and can be transposed as electronic sheet music and printed. Aside from its impressive range in reproducing sound, the instrument was touted for a design that makes its operation relatively simple compared with other electronic instruments on the market. ``It integrates and puts into a usable and easy-to-understand package a lot of technology that already exists,'' said Robert Margouleff, a music producer and engineer who attended the demonstration. ``You don't have to be a scientist'' to play it. Priced at $15,000, the baby grand version retails at less than a conventional baby grand piano, Van Koevering officials said. Still, professional studio musicians shouldn't worry about losing their day jobs just yet. Moog said the interactive piano is designed primarily as an educational tool and for home entertainment, at least for now. I don't have an answer for you, but I would suggest trying the phrase like this: "while St. Peter's theives debate the price of time." Perhaps you've thought about this already. The phrasing when sung delays "the price of time", but I think the poetry would put them together. In general I think the lyric is saying "I won't let religious moral codes cause me to hesitate". You may have concluded the same or something better yourself and I assume you want to get the real details of what St. Peter has to do with this and who the theives are exactly. I would like to give my personal assumption on this. For the 1973 European tour Carl still used a huge Ludwig drumkit on stage. I know this as I attended the 1973 show in Dusseldorf, Germany. This drumkit is shown in the respective tour book that I still have. ELP performed the complete Karn Evil 9 Impression 1 and Toccata during this show. Due to the well matured state of these piece the band must have well progressed with the recording sessions. The album was released way ahead of the 1974 world tour where Carl utilized the stainless steel drumkit. The Manticore Special video also shows Carl using the Ludwig drumkit during rehearsal/recording? sessions. Therefore I assume Carl used the Ludwig drumkit to record the BSS album. BTW the stainless steel drumkit weighted more than 1 ton, I don't believe anyone would move such a monster into a studio. Only Carl knows it better maybe.
