In issue 4 of the elp-digest, there was a request for the lyrics of "Hang On To A Dream", originally performed by Nice - and later by ELP. The lyrics - taken from the original Nice version - are as follows (no warranty...): Hang On To A Dream (Tim Harding, Keith Emerson) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What can I say She's walking away with how she saw What can I do Still loving you It's all a dream How can we hang on to a dream How can it really be the way it seems What can I do She's still saying it's through with how it was What will I find I still can't see why she says what she does. How can we hang on to a dream How can it really be the way it seems What can I say She's walking away with how we saw What can I do She's still saying it's through It's all a dream How can we hang on to a dream How can it really be the way it seems How can we hang on to a dream Another nice masterpiece of Nice was the famous "Ars Longa Vita Brevis". The lyrics (by Lee Jackson) of this are as follows: Ars Longa Vita Brevis (Lee Jackson, Keith Emerson) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ars Longa Vita Brevis Life is too short to paint a kiss So sing a picture, paint a song Take it home and bang your gong Life is an ill-cast comedy for fools Ars Longa Vita Brevis A caption to a life of bliss A rose too beautiful to see Jumped off the bush and spoke to me Of life that's an ill-cast comedy for fools A transcription of the original Nice-version of "Hang On To A Dream", done in a hand written manner by H.-M. Dücker, was published by Schott, Germany in "Great Keyboard Solos", ED 7321, 1985. By the way, in my opinion, the piano based version done by Nice was more impressive; may be a result of the jazzy piano improvisation over an ostinato bass. The arrangement of the original Harding title shows how much Emerson intends to fuse various styles, like classical intro, melancholy paraphrase, overture and bridge parts. One never gets the impression that incompatible items are forced together - it's a perfect fusion. I hope, this info might fill some gaps. Best wishes & bye for now. Stephan ------------------------------ From: "Frank Sonnenberg" , on 11/2/99 12:10 PM: To: "ELP Digest" Subject: Orchestral Bolero John, In the November 2, 1999 issue of ELP digest, you wrote: "Editor's Note: ...The orchestral version of "Bolero" had been a rarity since, at the time, this was the only way to get it. More recently, I think it has shown up in other places. " Is this the version that is on the "Works Live" album, or is it something different? Could you please elaborate about the "other places" it has appeared? Thanks. -Frank Sonnenberg sonnenbe@worldnet.att.net [ Editor's Note: At first, I thought for certain that I had this on an official ELP CD. I was thinking it was on Return of the Manticore. But I checked and it isn't. Is it on one of the ELP Greatest Hits repackagings? Anyway, I found the version I have on CD and realized that it's on what is probably a bootleg or grey market CD that is made in Italy and claims to be an ELP rarities from the "Missing In Action" series. A closer listen leads me to believe that this is just a version recorded from the vinyl "On Tour with ELP" disc that was discussed in the last issue and put on CD. Sorry to get anyone's hopes up. If anyone knows of an "official" source on CD, please let me know so I can point people in the right direction. Hello John, I am an avid reader of the newsletter and thank you John for all your hard work !! I have seen ELP over 65 times in the USA & Canada since my high school days ( my first show Gaelic Park - Bronx NYC, early 70's) and still to this day my favourite music, which includes Yes, Genesis, Floyd amongst others. Still have the ticket stub ! I read with interest in the last issue the reference to the 1973 Radio Station Promo record " On Tour With ELP." I was lucky enough to win one from a local radio station in Toronto Q-107, and still enjoy it to this day. This is and will always probably be the only thing I ever win, but worth allot to me, like all my ELP memories. You are a link to those memories and to the future. Again thank you John, and everyone who contributes to my enjoyment, but all of us who receive this great work ! KUDOS !!!! Hope all is well in your world everyone ! It seems that many of the major concerts throughout the past few decades have been published on video. Since seeing the BRIEF ELP footage on the VH-1 special, it has once again sparked a new fire on finding out why the CA jam was never published, or if it was, where can one find a copy ? Are there copyright problems or issues with the different record labels, etc., etc. ? Do you have any information on this that you can share with the group? Thanks, and keep of the great work !!! [ Editor's Note: A chance to plug the new "Ask Greg Lake" section on Greg's official web site: http://www.greglake.com/askgreg.html Here's a question posed to Greg and his answer... "Are there plans to release any concert films or footage from from the 73/74 Brain Salad Surgery world tour other than the "Manticore" documentary? I've heard that footage does exist. Thanks, Pat Harrington Hi Pat: There is a lot of footage out there. I think we would try to release the California Jam video next if we can get the rights. We do have a copy of the masters but it was done with ABC television in the States and that involves a lot of clearances. A few comments with regard to items featured in the last Digest: ######################################################### Subject: Smoke on the Hammond (posted by Melis Adriano) - I have a budget CD (reissued 1995) entitled 'Rock Classics - The Earthquake Album' issued by Tring International (JHD142). The original album was put together by 'Life Aid Armenia' to raise funds and awareness to help victims of the Armenian earthquake of 7/12/88. The remake of 'Smoke on the Water' is the title track on the album, and recorded by a band known as 'Rock Aid Armenia', line-up as follows: Lead Guitarists: Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Brian May (Queen) and Geoff Beauchamp Vocalists: Ian Gillan, Bryan Adams, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Paul Rodgers (The Law, ex Bad Company) Bass guitar: Chris Squire (Yes) Keyboards: Keith Emerson (ELP), Geoff Downes (Asia, ex Yes) Drums: Roger Taylor (Queen) There were several versions of the CD and video apparently - further info. can be found on the web-sites (official or otherwise) of some of the above artists. Other bands featured on the album are: FREE, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, GENESIS, WHITESNAKE, ASIA, STARSHIP, IRON MAIDEN, MIKE & THE MECHANICS, BOSTON. # Note: a websearch of this subject revealed a mention of the 'Rock Aid Armenia - Smoke on the Water' track within a KE rarities tape compiled by David Terralavoro in Vol 1 Issue 1 of the ELP Digest (co-incidentally a 'Happy Birthday KE!' issue!). Spooky or what? ########################################################## Subject: ELP Video and Information (posted by Kenneth Barratt - review by GTTysonIV) - I have recently received a copy of 'The Manticore Video' (purchased from the website). I can generally agree with GT's comments on the programme, but I find the whole thing generally just as I remember it (seen now after a 26 year break!). Just a couple of comments: The programme was first broadcast in the UK on Boxing Night 1973 as an 'Old Grey Whistle Test Special' introduced by Bob Harris. I have original clippings from the UK music press both introducing and reviewing the programme itself. The biggest difference I found was that of the 'Master of Ceremonies' who commentated at various places throughout the programme. On the original programme the voice was similar to the excellent American actor 'James Earl Jones' - (a subsequent review describing the voice as a 'smooth, chocolatey commentary'). On this new release the commentary appears to be spoken by a British actor (sounding remarkably like Patrick Allen - a stalwart of Barratt Homes advertising, and British TV and films in the 1960's). No disrespect to Patrick Allen, but the 'JEJ' commentary was the one that I had expected. Could there have been a 'remix' of the original programme produced for British and American audiences? The voices are definitely different as I recorded the programme on cassette audio tape (which I still have!). ############################################################ Subject: ELP footage on Japanese DVD (posted by David Seeley) - Recently compiling a list of possible karaoke videos for a grand family 'Millenium Karaoke' session to take place on New Year's Eve this year, my daughter Jenna obtained a list of tapes from our local Virgin Megastores in Liverpool, England. On the list was mention of a video tape 'Isle of Wight Festival 1970 - Message of Love' (cert.18, 137 mins.). The tape seems to be the same as David's DVD (featuring yours truly), and it would appear to feature the additional material mentioned as the advertisement states that it is the 'extended film version'. The tape is released in the UK by Pearson New Entertainment (Oct.1995) and is listed as catalogue number PNV 1005 (price £12.99 UK). ############################################################# Keep up the excellent work! John, Re: Smoke on the Hammond In 1989 Life Aid Records released Smoke on the Water (in radio and extended mixes), together with a version of Black Sabbath's Paranoid, all performed by a "supergroup" consisting of Emerson, as well as Geoff Downes and members of Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Yes etc. The tracks were produced by Gary Langan and Geoff Downes. The group was a collectively known as "Rock Aid Armenia". All proceeds went towards funding long term after care and counselling projects in earthquake affected Armenia. A CD single was released, as well as a Rock Aid Armenia video through Virgin Vision. In 1990 a compilation album was released by Rock Aid Armenia called "The Earthquake Album". It contained tracks by ELP, Yes, Deep Purple etc, again released under Life Aid Records. Also someone commented "You can't take pictures at the Hall of Fame... They say it ruins the displays." As a photographer, this is a crock of you know what. The flourensent lighting in the place will do more damage than anything. Photo flash, especially the kind available today does nothing to RUIN a display. Years ago there was concern about photoflash ruining the fabrics of quilts and other textile displays at various museums and shows. At the JP Getty Museum in California, the only thing they have in LOW lighting is the rare hand printed books and bibles that are over 600 years old. I 'm sure NOTHING in the RRHofFame compares to their rarity and value. They probably don't want any pictures taken in fear that someone will redistribute them in another forum (internet?) First off, in Karn Evil 9 1st impression, why skip all of the vocal parts of part one that are vocally relative to part two (from Step inside...Hello!....to the break leading into part two)???? 2nd.....Bitches Crystal (allthough it sounds better than greg lake's 97/98 version on Then and Now, Disc 2.....) the vocals were good, but the begining after the piano solo was messed up....call me old fassioned, but the little bell intro is kewl! and lastly......Tarkus.......by far the best tune played on there other than Hoedown and Karn Evil 9..........but it misses something that set off the song very nicely in the 1st place........THE LYRICS!!!!! they only sang the last line of lyrics in the song......I think they should have used more.... so now I am done criticizng the ELP tribute CD, but all in all, it wasnt such a bad buy...for listening, it rocks.....for people who [were born to or just like to] criticize/compare (to origonal) there is a lot there Jason ------------------------------ From: "Avi Schwab" , on 6/10/99 9:56 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Encores, Legends, & Paradox Hi ELP'ers, Well, I just got the ELP tribute album, Encores, Legends, & Paradox, and I have to say, the new kids did a pretty good job... EXCEPT!!!! I could not stand their rendition of the Sheriff. They absolutely destroyed the song. Most of the other songs on the album kept with the general theme and sound of the original, but the Sheriff was so different that it lost all meaning. Buy the CD and find out what I mean. The rest of the CD was pretty good, especially Hoedown. One other thing, what were those three wierd animal-people??? On another note, I can't wait for the Wakeman-Emerson tour! Avi Schwab ------------------------------ From: "Jean-Pierre Nadeau" , on 6/25/99 12:05 AM: To: Subject: wish list Hello John, To be sure, I would love to see Greg Lake return to ELP and that would be my first choice any day of the week. However, I've been listening to The Power of 3 nonstop for the last week. Songs like "Talkin "bout" and "Desde la vida" are dynamite and I'd gladly pay my money anytime to buy EBP CDs and concert tickets. Robert Berry would be a good choice for many reasons. He has a fantastic voice. He's a very good musician. He's a good composer -- who has the instinct for coming up with excellent progressive material with commercial appeal (which is good news since money coming in for the band spells longevity). And last, but not least, like Berry himself once said, ELP has fire in its blood. Well, so has Robert Berry! I would also like Emerson, Wetton & Palmer... but it would definitely be my last choice. In the last few years, I have seen two or three appearances by Pete Towshend on the Letterman show. What struck me immediately was the energy and and excitement this guy has as a showman. Something about his stage presence and performance really got to me in a way that I have not felt since I first saw (you know who...) Keith Emerson! Recently I began wondering what Keith and Pete might do together. Think about it: they're about the same age, both incorrigible rockers, both have composed lengthy works (e.g. The Who's rock opera Tommy), both played in trios for a long time. Pete sings and plays guitar, so we need only find a drummer; let's assume that Carl is available for the project. Keith can always play bass on the foot pedals :-) Then we need a name for the band: EPT (Emerson Palmer & Townshend) CKP (Carl Keith & Pete) Who's Nice? The Why And at the end of Rondo, Pete could smash his guitar over the wailing L-100...
