Sorry for the longest-ever delay between issues of the ELP Digest. I won't bore you with stories behind the delay. Instead, I've dug through a lot of the backlog and put as much information as I could in this issue. As luck would have it, a lot of short questions and comments were in the ELP Digest queue. So, there are a lot of small articles in the issue. Please take the time to read through them since there are some short ones that are just as interesting as the long ones. I'll make every effort to get back on a more normal schedule for the Digest. One final note: There are a number of letters in here commenting on other people's remarks about an Emerson/Wakeman project/tour/etc. for 2000. I just want to emphasize that I have absolutely no additional information about this. Nor do I have any kind of official confirmation. If I get more official word, I'll send out a Digest immediately to let you all know. The Robbin R&B club is a great gig which holds around 600 and not surprisingly it was packed to capacity. John Wetton was on form and could have handled the ELP repertoire with ease (heresy? - or a way forward). Carl looked in great shape and had clearly being enjoying the sun. The set consisted largely of 'Asia' numbers. However the highlights for the front row devotees were the three ELP numbers, namely 'Bitches Crystals', 'Hoedown' and 'Fanfare' during which Carl excelled himself. 'BC' was particularly notable for the 'spot on' piano and synth patches (courtesy of John Young) and for the 'piano' solo being played on guitar (courtesy of David Kilminster). The principal theme of 'Hoedown' was carried by unison guitar and keyboard with a particularly exciting performance by John Wetton. During 'Fanfare' Carl undertook a five minute drum solo which was every bit as good as that of the 74 tour - where does this guy get his energy? The intros were alternated between Carl and John with some amusing observations e.g. on leaving the stage to screams for a third encore "we're a non drug band now days you know!" Lastly it is worth noting that the gig was recorded and so we could all be in for a future treat. Something we haven't seen in London since the Black Moon tour in the early 90's - Keith Emerson joined Carl Palmer and John Wetton on stage at their 'Qango' (formed out of the aborted ASIA renunion) gig at the London Astoria last Friday. Qango roared into a rendition of 'Fanfare' when KE appeared from the wings to join the lads on stage and let rip with some great 'jammin'. A great shame then that he only stayed on stage for the one number - the guys had great fun with KE looking animated with a large fixed grin on his face - THIS GUY LOVES PLAYING LIVE!! The Qango gig was great fun mixing well known ASIA tracks with classic ELP tracks (Fanfare, Hoedown,Bitches Crystal). So the inevitable thought came to mind.... With John Wetton sounding as good, if not better, than he did in the heydays of ASIA in the 1980's, Palmer on shuddering form (boy he is a heavy hitter when you get close up!), and Emerson looking like he really misses the live action... why not form a new trio boys? Wetton and Palmer need the third apex to achieve their potential and KE would be just the man! Anyhow, a great night was had by all and with it came the confirmation, if any was needed, that CP and KE have alot of fire left in them yet. Regards. Hi John This is a followup to an item from David Gooding from a previous digest on the Ginger Pig Social Club featuring Lee Jackson. They came over to Bermuda in July 1999 to play a few mainly private gigs but I was able to see them at a charity gig for MS. The music was great, pretty much as David described and I also had the opportunity to chat with Lee in the break. He graciously signed my Nice CD and told me what he had been up to since the breakup of the Nice. The most amazing piece of news from Lee was that the Nice had reformed for a surprise gig at Keith Emerson's mothers 80th (I think) birthday party. Keith had a big Glen Miller type band as the main event but there was an extra set of drums & equipment in the background. After the band had finished Keith, Lee & Brian got up and did a set of old Nice numbers. Lee explained that they had discussed the numbers to do over the phone and didn't have a reheasal as such and so were a little rusty but apparently a good time was had by all. One of Keith's sons got up and was jamming with them on keyboards. Like David I can recommend the Ginger Pig Social Club as a good a night out. In The track "Cutting it fine" on the debut ASIA cd/album during the last portion of the tune where the lyrics are "...cutting it- cutting it fine" just before the chorus begins, you can here John Wetton whispering something (obviously overdubbed) buried beneath the main singing. It sounds like he is maybe saying "Hatchet". Clearly heard are the letters "tch" or "ch" in whatever the word- or words- he is speaking. He says it 3 times. Can ANYONE make it out? I have been very curious since the release of the album, have played it for many people and no one(some who say they hear nothing) can decipher it. For those who are adamant that ELP are atheists, I must point something out. 1.The track Jerusalem was a piece of music featured in the movie "Chariots of Fire" and is included in the soundtrack. This was not a piece of music questioning the existence of Jesus Christ. 2. If Greg Lake was an atheist, he wouldn't dare even mention the word God as he has done in some of his songs. Most notably " Lay down your guns" and "Footprints in the Snow". He even Capitalized the letter "G" in the word God. 3. Keith Emerson has been quoted as saying that he" ...would like to write some gospel music...." in Keyboard player magazine. 4. Carl Palmer, in the ELP documentary Manticore special says about Greg's getting laryngitis that it's "...an act of God, just like the rain is". I have no doubt that the early lyrics of some ELP tunes slammed Christianity, but until I hear it directly from either Greg Lake ,or his personal manager, I am going to hope that he is not an atheist. I am not willing to get into any sort of a debate over this, I am merely pointing out my own observations on the "other side" of the coin so to speak when it comes to this subject. Thanks! First, let me say what a great digest this is. Keep up the good work. Second, I'd like to mention that everyone on this side of the Atlantic was very entertained by one of your correspondents in the last issue who thoughtfully warned us that, being a music major, some of the terms he was going to use might be a bit technical for us - and then called the celeste at the start of Bitches Crystal 'a little bell intro'!!! :-) But to business: I wonder if anyone can tell me whether a great album I used to have on vinyl is available as a CD. The title is Music from Free Creek, featuring a whole host of great musicians, including Our Keith! Among other things, Keith plays a great number on the Hammond entitled Freedom Jazz Dance - archetypal Emerson with clunky (sorry to get technical here) attack and the usual virtuoso performance. Worth getting the album for this track alone, though he also plays on other tracks. Anyone got any info on this? I really love to reacquire this one - it's a treasure! May I wish you and all our friends out there a brilliant New Year 2000! In answer to Jaap Meeuwsen and his query about Greg on the BBC. There was an edition of TOTP2 (Top of the Pops 2) shown, (we think), on Christmas Eve, where the video for 'I believe in Father Christmas' was shown. Shot in the desert, it consisted of shots of Greg singing with his acoustic, bedouin Arabs in caravan's with their camels, and ended with a soldier returning from war into the arms of his young son. My daughter Jenna thought Greg looked like a girl (long hair et al!), however as she was also wrong when she thought that the video had been shot in snow...our hero's reputation is once again safe and sound! Neil Pott's floppy promo disc sounds like the free ELP single which was released on the cover of the New Musical Express on 10 November 1973. This indeed was the first time that the full track ' Brain Salad Surgery' was given an airing in the UK (thus the line...."Brain Salad Surgery - we made in for our NME"). This line could also be a reference to the mindless twaddlings of the music writer Lester Bangs which NME had previously published, pulling the band to pieces at every opportunity (does anyone remember the Feb '74 article 'Crazed Power Demons' for example?). The rest of the single comprised snippets of each of the BSS tracks as Neil described I attended the excellent ELP Convention in Birmingham a few years back and put two of these singles (together with paper BSS covers) up for auction in a glass frame - they raised £21 (UK sterling). It has been released in Brazil by Rock Symphony Records, a double CD with live tracks recorded during the 3 first editions of the Rio ArtRock Festival (96, 97 and 98). There are 4 tracks presenting Pär Lindh and his band, recorded in 1997, when they closed the festival. They played here great renditions of "Jerusalem", "Rondo" and "21st Century Schizoid Man", though these songs were not chosen for this CD (they prefered to get some originals instead). All the info about this CD can be found at www.geocities.com/rioartrockfest (soo to be www.rioartrock.com), and it can be also ordered online. Of course there's complete info about all the 4 editions of the festival, pics, reviews, etc. The info about this CD can be actually found on the "Buy CD's" link. Another band featured on this album is the Brazilian band called Quaterna Requiem. They're a very good instrumental prog rock band, leaded by a female keyboards player, Elisa Wiermann, who is also a Keith Emerson fan. Her brother, Claudio Dantas, is the drummer of the band, and he's very much influenced by Carl Palmer. Some of their songs included here are "Fanfarra" ("Fanfare") and "Triade" ("Triad"). Not too hard to notice from the songs names that they're an ELP-influenced band. I highly recommend this CD not only to ELP fans all over the world, but also to any prog rock fan. This album will draw lots of comparisons to that all time classic Hammond B-3 band, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and fans of that group, as well as prog lovers in general, will definitely rejoice at this album! Now let's get to import news! Starting with imports that are soon to be released which you'll find at : ATOMIC ROOSTER-LIVE AND RAW 70/71 8 track collection of very 'raw' recordings. The first four were recorded at Paris theatre, London in 1970 & feature John Du Cann, Vincent Crane & Carl Palmer. The last four were recorded at the same venue in 1971 after the departure of Palmer & feature Paul Hammond on drums. These are the only live recordings of the first incarnation of Atomic Rooster. Includes 16 page full color booklet with informative sleeve notes & rare photographs. We're back with part 2 of the newsletter. Again, these are recent import releases which you'll find at : KING CRIMSON-IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON 24 bit digitally remastered Japanese reissue of the legendary British prog group's 1970 & second album on a gold CD & in a miniaturized gatefold LP sleeve limited to the initial pressing only. Eight tracks. Features Greg Lake on vocals. I want to make a comment on the Japanese remasters of the King Crimson Wake of Poseidon, Lizard and Islands. The only difference between the Japanese releases and the recent US releases is that the Japanese releases are on gold CD's (plus and obi strip and probably a Japanese booklet, of course). But both the US and Japanese releases have the same Fripp remastering and the same limited edition mini-LP sleeve. So unless you specifically want gold discs, you'd do just as well to get the much less expensive US releases which you'll find at . Recently released are the following four remastered CD's from the Manticore catalog (these come in gem boxes, not in mini-LP sleeves). BANCO-BANCO J Japanese reissue of the veteran Italian prog rock act's 19 75 debut album. Digitally remastered using 20 bit K2 Super Coding technology. PFM-PHOTOS OF GHOSTS J Digitally remastered using K2 technology, this is a Japanese reissue of the Italian progressive rock band's 1973 album.2000 release. PFM-WORLD BECAME THE WORLD J Japanese reissue of 1974 album from Italian prog rock band. Digitally remastered using K2 technology. 6 tracks. SINFIELD,PETE-STILL J Japanese reissue of the former King Crimson member's solo debut, originally released on the Manticore label in 1973. DigDigitally remastered using K2 technology. I noticed Santi Cerezo's question about the 'Rondo' [CD]. The official "Welcome Back my Friends" live album was compilated from two concerts: Anaheim, CA, February 1974 and Tulsa, OK, some date later same year. The Anaheim concert had been broadcasted live on radio. It is not clear which parts of "Welcome Back" are Anaheim and which are Tulsa. As Anaheim was broadcasted, many recordings from that concert made it into the bootleg circuit. On Rondo the first four tracks are from Anaheim, 1974. The fifth track, Rondo, was recorded in another year and another place - ELP didn't even perform Rondo during the 1974 tour (Pictures was the encore then, not Rondo). I'm pretty sure the 'Rondo' version [...] is the same as the 'Rondo' on Return of the Manticore. That means it was recorded in London, December 1970. On 'Return of the Manticore' the recording is edited and the percussion solo is omitted. On the [Rondo CD] the persussion solo is there, but the beginning and end of 'Rondo' are missing. Combining the two recordings would restore the original live version. When animated the Tarkus tanklike movement really fits the music. I've been wondering how to put a bug in Emos' promotion team about just such a game. Anyway, anybody wants to see pictures of the models feel free to contact me by E-mail.
