Those of us close enough to a stop on the Ringo tour or the 'Palmer' tour are looking forward to that. We've also got details on the first round of releases from an 'official bootleg' series of CDs from Sanctuary Records. Read on, MacDuff. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites ... I love this band! Journey of the Dunadan is so silly that I can't listen to it. It's reminiscent of the Stonehenge number in "This is Spinal Tap". However, I love Chronometree, On to Evermore and Perelandra. Couple of things struck me - that Tony Banks recalls Tony Hart, the prim, prissy kind old uncle artist on BBC kids' TV, and that Genesis, like many prog rock acts, had mega image problems, which come out in their appallingly bad pop videos. The band had two of the most fatally boring people in rock music (Banks and Rutherford), and desperately needed the am dram antics of Gabriel and the Mockney blokeishness of Collins to raise the band's profile. (But it was great to see the early footage of Genesis in action, and good to have Tony Smith contributing - too often these docus feature only the bands and journos.) --------------------------------------------- From: Martin Kornick [m kornick@prefaceinc.com] Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2001 4:50 PM To: 'ELP-digest@reluctant.com' Subject: TARKUS in SPOCK'S BEARD Video! I just got the new SPOCK'S BEARD video "The Making of V" and it has a hilarious segment with Neal & Al dancing with their kids to TARKUS! It's great to see such a tribute to ELP in this video, and how the next generation of Prog "SPOCK'S BEARD" are bringing up their kids on ELP & Prog as well! There's also a short discussion on Greg Lake's lyrics to TARKUS in the video. This is really a GREAT video, and welcome addition to the SPOCK'S BEARD V CD, which is easily among the best progressive rock CDs to be produced in years! SPOCK'S BEARD is a great band if you have not heard them yet. You can buy the video at http://www.spockbeard.com & http://radiantrecords.com It was also reported in Classic Rock magazine that Carl Palmer went to see SPOCK'S BEARD live at their London Gig last October. Having heard the Sanctuary reissues when loaned them by a friend I can inform you that the last Castle reissues bearing the logo "remastered from the original master tapes" are essentially(?) the same thing. The latest Sanctuary discs have fold out sleeves but the sound is the same. The Castle versions also came as "Picture" discs bearing the album cover pic on the cd itself. I think that someone should lay that studio version of Pictures to rest. First it was on the box set, then In the Hot Seat and now on the Pictures reissue by Sanctuary. ENOUGH GUYS. I can really recommend "Here Comes the Nice" a 3 cd set from Sanctuary that has all the original immediate albums plus some great unreleased live stuff from 5 Bridges and a live concert with Davy O'List. I got the King Biscuit Live ELP double cd and it contains some of the WBMFTSNE, but it sounds much better. Hey guys what is all this talk of remixed ELP?? The Sanctuary versions are not remixed, they sound the same as the Castle ones which were just clearer. --------------------------------------------- From: Prott, Bernd, VMLV8 [bernd.prott@lfk.eads.net] Sent: Monday, June 18, 2001 11:02 AM To: 'elp-digest@reluctant.com' Subject: Some comments on Vol 11 issue 5 Hello, Jim McManus wrote in the last issue >>> "Lets have a poll of the worst elp album, track, cover. >>> Personally I would nominate all of Love Beach for all three >>> awards and be honest there are some clunkers in the back >>> catalogue" I must confess, I'm honestly feed up with such inquiries. I couldn't care less about its results. What would it yield, that ELP fans who listen to an ELP album "officially" ranked as bull are stupid, or what? Please let's get down to earth. Every great band who produced music over the last 30 years (e.g. Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Yes and of course ELP) made albums that are killers (still today) and some that they are not so proud of. That's natural for me and the ELP book gives good insights under which circumstances the different ELP albums were produced. But please let this be history, now it is everybody personal decision to keep the ones s(he) likes or throw them away. I also like some ELP albums more like others and this will be the case with every single ELP fan. If we really want a poll, why not ask for those ELP shows that still lack to be officially released. Many fans collect private recordings of ELP shows. If you check-out tape trader pages there are more than 200 different ELP shows to be found, most of them not even relased as commercial boots (which I don't like as they are a rip-off). The only problem is, if you have nothing to trade, you will not get a copy of someone elses tapes (tape-trading is a money-free activity). Even if the quality is sometimes pretty bad, many tapes prove again and again that ELP were a killer Live act. Some people ask for the California Jam to be released, I would prefer 74 shows from the European leg (Dusseldorf, Rotterdam, Frankfurt, London). IMHO the May74 tour in Europe still is ELP at its all-time best performancewise. Also many 77 and 78 shows with or without orchestra are nothing but great and would do ELP better justice than the Works Live CD or the Montreal video. Keith himself confessed, that New York Madison Square Garden was the very best performance with the orchestra. Dear Keith, if you have the tapes in your vault, get it released pleeeeeeeease. Someone stated later in the digest that ELP are sitting on a goldmine. This is absolutely true. Why don't they release an official live anthology, chronological, complete shows that represent the different periods. ELP can easily fill a 30 CD box and I would rush out to buy it. Carl Palmer once had the idea of an official ELP bootleg collection. Deep Purple and others have done it. Even this would be acceptable depending on the quality. I believe that there must be many tapes in ELP's archives which have much better quality. But I would prefer complete shows not fragments or mixes. I also don't want to see ELP in wheelchairs on stage playing pieces from the good old days, but a farewell from stage in great style would be something I would vote for with all my heart. Let the Show be with us. (I'd been hoping it would be the July 1974 show I saw.) The New Haven show will be part of a box set of other bootleg material. Two box sets of previously unreleased live material are scheduled to come out in August. After having received Carl's Anthology "Do Ya Wanna Play, Carl?" yesterday, I've played and enjoyed it twice, so far. Its a really great collection from Carl's days both before, during and after both incarnations of ELP! Go get it - ya wanna play it again and again! Here's some reflections on the unreleased pieces on the 2 CD: The Concerto is great fun, and a lot better than I feared, though I wonder how seriously they took it at that time. It seems somewhat inconsistent (both productionwise and compositionally), there seems to be some sound problem (high background noise) and it ends rather abruptly, or perhaps undramatically is the word. For someone used to Keith's rather aggressive finales, this one seems more like a whimper than a bang. "The Pancha Suite" is also better than I thought, from comments on the sound (which is far from perfect, though a lot better than your common bootleg). It's a great jam/workout, however, though put up as by "ELP" it seems a lot more like a Palmer/Back Door venture. "March Militaire" is also fun. This Schubert piece is perhaps not played as perfect as a well rehearsed orchestra should have, still well worth the effort! And the final tune "Shawnee" (by Barone) which Carl plays with the Buddy Rich orchestra, is really amusing, with audience (or band members?) comments and a nice drum solo. The sound is a typical home recording, though it preserves the spontaniety and does not disturb the (at least mine) enjoyment of it. Though, hopefully the ELP Archive set will consistently have a lot better sound! Bjorn Are --------------------------------------------- From: Neil Potts [neil@ringwood12.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 5:31 PM To: ELP Digest Subject: Do you wanna play, Carl John Have just bought Carl's anthology and I can only say it's BRILLIANT!!. This is one of the albums I've been waiting for, and by far the better anthology released by ELP (come on Keith get your finger out!). From the previously unreleased material to the stuff we know and love it is just a pleasure from beginning to end. The percussion concerto is a modern classical piece in which Carl shows his prowess on tuned percussion as well as drums. There are two more previously unreleased tracks on CD1, The "Pancha suite" which Carl says he recorded not long after "Bullfrog". The other track being Schuberts "March Militaire" which sounds like the old "Hooked on classics" recordings. CD 2 has tracks from the past two from The Craig, one of which sounds very like The Who. There follows one from The Chants then one from Atomic Rooster. This is when Carl really starts to show his amazing drumming that made ELP such a powerhouse. Two tracks are included from PM which are, sorry to say just straight rock, i remember buying this on vinyl and my dissapointment in the quality of the music. Two tracks from Mike Oldfield with Carl on percussion are good but I'm biased as I also like Mike Oldfield. Three tracks from Asia including my personal favourite "Time Again". Two Tracks from "3" which I must say was a very underrated band. They really did make some good music and the tracks included here, "Dasda La Vida" and "Eight Miles High". It's a pity they didn't make a bigger go of it. There then follows Qangos version of "Hoedown". It's just like ELP bowling along at a great rate with excellent guitar and keyboard work. I saw them live in the North East and were just a brilliant collection of musicians. Yet again a great pity they couldn't have gone on to better things. Last of all is a great bootleg recording of the Buddy Rich orchestra at Ronnie Scott's club. It starts with Buddy inviting Carl up on stage to play. Lots of wise cracks and laughter, but then bursting into rousing Jazz tune called "Shawnee". On the whole it is a great album and I reccomend this to any ELP fan to add to their collections and they won't be dissapointed. HI, Just thought I'd pass on something that I heard recently. Here in the UK we have a snooker based quiz show called "Big Break". This show is hosted by a comedian called Jim Davidson. Jim is a big fan of ELP and apparently is a big mate of Keith Emerson (Keith has even provided music for one of his series and Jim uses ELP's music in some of his shows). A couple of weeks ago on Big Break, Jim was interviewing a female contestant from Nottingham. When he heard she was from Nottingham Jim's reply was "I'm helping to organize a big concert in Nottingham. It features my favourite band Emerson Lake & Palmer. So get yourself along there and see some proper musicians playing proper Music". I haven't been able to find out any more but Jim definitely said this. Does anybody else now anything about it?.
