Not much to say (that can be said quickly) and I want to get this mailed out before it's any later than it already is. Of special interest to UK readers is the announcement of a Carl Palmer show tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 18). See below for details. I'd also like to thank Dave Marks (the bass player in "Palmer") for taking the time to read the reviews that have appeared in the Digest and for chiming in on the discussion. Thanks and welcome, Dave. And the early reaction to the "Bootleg" set is starting to come in. There's a wide variety of opinions on this and I encourage you to read and, if you've got an opinion, let us know. I don't have the set yet so I can't comment yet myself. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .… Just in case you haven't been to the sites recently … there's a very moving statement from Greg about September 11 at http://www.greglake.com/statemnt.html ... and also a shorter, but heartfelt, message on Carl's home page: http://www.carlpalmer.com/palmer.html Carl's in the middle of a series of October concert dates – see details at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html and be sure to read the related e-mail under "Breaking News." The winners of the "Heat of the Moment" autographed cymbal giveaway have been posted at http://www.carlpalmer.com/contest2.html … and there are a number of names familiar to ELP Digest readers among the winners. Hi everyone, Dave Marks here, the bass player for Carl Palmer's new band. I came to have a look at the digest last week, having a general nosey around and was particularly interested in the reviews of the Palmer July tour. It's definitely a double edged sword playing to a crowd of fans as devoted as the ELP crew. Although we are playing music that you love and enjoy hearing, we are doing something very different with it, and even if we were to try and perfectly replicate ELP's music, we just aren't ELP. Therefore we run the risk of people saying "Oh! I love this music, Oh! I hate what this band has done to it." Still, I found it helpful and most of the time quite pleasant reading the reviews. I can clearly see that the ELP digest is an open forum for diverse opinions, and I appreciate a balanced and insightful critique of the band's performance. It would be foolish and naive of me to expect that everyone who comes to see us will enjoy the gig, but it's important to remember that we are a young band - in terms of how long we have been together. I first played with Carl one week before the tour started, and we put the entire set together in seven days. We were plagued with problems, particularly at the Purcell room. This is a classical venue, designed for piano recitals and string quartets. It was a little impractical of the Festival organisers to put us there, as the sound is uncontrollable and when a band plays as loud as we do, a room like that is a nightmare. if you were in the audience and you thought it was hard to hear what was going on spare a thought for those of us on the stage. At least the amps were pointing at you! Quite a number of people were able to see beyond our first tour problems, and see that this band has to evolve. We have had to learn to play together with the kind of tightness, and that unquantifiable musical-ESP that only bands who play together for years can achieve. We had a week. But I don't think we did too bad. Bryan Roberts seems to think we did. To quote Mr. Roberts, "The lead guitarist had a serious charisma by-pass and the bass player looked like he was on day release from school having borrowed his dad's ill-fitting suit. Frankly, both guitarists left me cold and very uninspired. They were plain boring." To be honest I was quite entertained by this review. The very fact that the most insightful thing Mr. Roberts could find to say about me was with reference to my clothes (brown and yellow retro suit, hardly a tailor-fitted attempt at appearing Bourgeois) and my age (22 - I honestly can't believe that this is an issue people would seek to discredit me over) reassured me that this article was an attempt by a reviewer to take petty shots at irrelevant issues instead of thoughtfully trying to elaborate on the MUSIC that we played. Reviewers should be reminded that their purpose in this forum is to help those who didn't make the gig get an idea of what occurred that night. It is testament to a reviewer's ability as to how deep into the performance they can take you. As the ELP fanbase that read your review floats around the furthest peripheral edge of our show at the Purcell Room, I thank you Mr. Roberts. You got your laugh, no doubt. But anyone who seriously wanted to know about our shows would dismiss you as a clown, writing little gags for the gratification you get when your audience titters. I'm sorry that I didn't play a single note that entire night which moved you, and I can't change what you felt, but in light of how much credit you gave me for trying (i.e. none) I suddenly don't care. We're going back out on the road tomorrow. Come see us, come review us, love us or hate us, and send it to the forum - I want to understand what the fans want, what they miss, if you enjoy what I do, if my solo spot entertained you, if I'm too young or you don't like my clothes, and indeed anything else that will help me grow as a performer. In the words of Jimi Hendrix (probably), I appreciate the feedback. ELP, Tarkus, Trilogy, Pictures, WBMFTSNE, are identical.(Trilogy has a bonus live track). BSS sounds to me very like the Yellow Submarine remastered CD by the Beatles. Not the music, even though Greg now Plays for Ringo, but in the case of the Beatles music the remastering was done from not the final mixes but a generation before. Hence on the Beatles CD some of the finishing touches such as phasing were missing. BSS sounds like this, some of the keyboard parts seem to be missing, such as little touches of harpsichord or piano in places. All in all BSS sounds very different indeed. The jury is still out as to whether it sounds better, but it is worth getting for an obsessive like me. I am waiting with baited breath for the Manticore Bootleg series. A.N.C --------------------------------------------- From: Sooner [sooner77@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, August 24, 2001 6:52 PM To: ELP Digest Subject: BSS on Sanctuary Alastair Cox's comments about Sanctuary perhaps using a DVD-Audio mix for their new version of "Brain Salad Surgery" were of great interest. When I listened to their version again I noticed that Emerson's parts on the songs "Brain Salad Surgery" and "When the Apple Blossoms..." were on an equal footing with the rhythm section (I know, referring to Lake and Palmer as simply a rhythm section doesn't do them justice) and vocal as opposed to the album proper where they generally take a back seat to the bass, percussion, and vocal. I do not own a DVD-Audio player but have noticed here in the USA that Rhino released a DVD-Audio version of BSS with the addition of "Lucky Man" as opposed to the two aforementioned songs. Alastair is right in stating that they are not true bonus tracks per se. I wanted to correct a statement I made about the end of part 1 of the "First Impression" being different on Sanctuary's BSS. I should have said that the end of part 2 sounds different to me with a piano note instead of the organ. The bridge between parts 1 and 2 doesn't fade out/back in as it did between sides of the vinyl album but that was already true of the Rhino CD version which is the one I'm using as a comparison. Since my original post I've noticed that the first few lines of Lake's vocal at the beginning of "Benny the Bouncer" are also markedly different. Steve Hammonds, the label manager of Sanctuary Records, has previously contributed here. Perhaps he would shed some light on this? If their new BSS is indeed a stereo mixdown of a DVD-Audio master, was that intentional? I find it appropriate that someone named Hammonds manages ELP's current UK label. I cannot express the disappointment I felt when I heard these CDs. I preordered the 2 sets and received them last week. To say that the quality of sound is awful is an understatement. Remember how those bad old vinyl bootlegs used to sound? Well Sanctuary have managed to recapture that sound perfectly. Tape drop outs, tape wow and flutter and they all sound like they were recorded on a cassette player from the back of the hall. I cannot believe that a band such as ELP don't have better quality tapes of their live concerts and how can a "proper" record label produce such rubbish??? I can only see ELP obsessives wanting these, I love ELP but have sold these CDs as I can't stand the quality (OK I know it said Bootleg series and I know they were cheap) Come on ELP, treat your fans with respect and give them some quality live recordings, PLEASE!! --------------------------------------------- From: Alastair Cox [Alasova@btinternet.com] Sent: Saturday, September 01, 2001 4:16 AM To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Sanctuary remasters Love Beach, Works 1, Works 2 This reissue is great. The sound on this one is better than the previous versions, even the first few songs sound good. The bonus tracks are also fun with EL and P racing through versions of the album tracks. The last demo is a bit disappointing as it is 8 minutes long, but the first 4 minutes are talking that is quiet and masked by Emo's synth tinkling so you can't hear what is being said. This is one now worth getting. Works 1 and 2 are remastered slightly louder than the Castle versions but the sound is the same. They include bonus live tracks but these are the same very poor quality sound that is found on the Manticore Bootleg series. If you have the Castle or Victory versions don't bother with these. --------------------------------------------- From: TONYSWARB@aol.com Sent: Monday, September 03, 2001 2:36 PM To: elp-digest-web@reluctant.com Subject: Manticore ELP Bootleg series Sirs, Since hearing about the release of these CD Box sets, I have waited with great anticipation. Today was release day (in the U.K. at least), so I headed down to HMV to pick up my pre-ordered sets. What a disappointment!!!!! I was back at HMV a couple of hours later for a refund, something I would have thought unthinkable with ELP. Why? Well, although musically ELP are superb (damn near note for note perfect), the quality totally ruined my day. I think I'm right in saying that most (if not all) recordings are made by someone holding a microphone in the general direction of the stage (indeed you can hear their voices in many places), and recorded onto a portable cassette recorder. Maybe I was expecting too much, but when the recordings were hyped as 'digitally remastered' I expected better sound than AM radio broadcast!! I felt compelled to let people (i.e. 'Fans') know what they're letting themselves in for, as £70 for the set is a considerable amount of money to pay. Surely, there must be better quality recordings in existence that the band could work on? (I admit to owning a copy of 'Smashing the Piano' Bootleg from 1975, which has variable quality, but all of it is much better than the new releases, albeit it was recorded in 1975) Do you think I'm being unfair here? I am an ELP fanatic, owning virtually everything they've released, and being a fan from day one, but I feel let down. I don't really know how to ask this, but I am going to try as best I can. I have recently been diagnosed with severe tennis elbow in both arms. This was caused by my last job and the work I did at that job. To make a long story short, my being a drummer is probably going to come to an end, because this injury is incurable, and can only be treated with so much. Surgery is risky, and all one can do is take pain killers and anti inflammatory drugs. I am at a loss to say what this is doing to me as a musician having played for the past 37 years, and 27 years of this being heavily into ELP. ( I emphasize on the word heavily). I am asking with all of my might if there are ANY ELP musicians who receive this Journal if any one of you, a Bassist/Singer and a Keyboardsman, would please out of the kindness of your heart be willing to perform with me the Karn Evil 9 3rd impression piece of music, as my "Last Hurrah"? It has been my dream of a lifetime to perform this one single tune by Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and I have never been able to find any musicians who are either willing to, or who can perform this most incredible prophetic piece. I recorded with two musicians, a keyboardsman, and bassist/singer in Barberton Ohio in a recording studio in 1998, and we did 5 tunes: Pirates, Tarkus, KE 9 1st impression (in its entirety), Hoedown and Jerusalem. The only tune worth mentioning in my opinion is Pirates, because it was mixed better than the others. I was playing on a very small drumkit, but I made it sound as best I could with what the studio had to offer, as I had to travel from Grand Rapids to Barberton. I used my own Paiste cymbals, however. This could be used as a testimony to my performing if anyone would like to hear it. We only rehearsed one time each-each song or piece before recording it. Please, if anyone is willing to do this, would you please let me know? I have everything Carl used at the time that tune was recorded as far as the drumset is concerned, as I have constructed a replica of his stainless steel kit which I have constructed with Ludwig's (wooden drums), and had my bass drum custom made to his exact dimensions 20x28. All drums are Ludwig's. They have been finished in Chrome Drum cover material, and the open shells lacquered with Chrome to give it the same look, minus the animal engravings and lugs. The snare is the Ludwig Super sensitive 61/2x14 chrome. My cymbals are the same sizes and models he used as well by Paiste, 2002, (with the exception of the ride which is a 3000 series from the 80's) so I have that great 13" Sound Edge High Hat sound Carl had. I can provide photographs of the set up if requested. I am pleading with anyone who knows anyone who might be willing to do this tune to please either write the Digest, or you may contact me via email. So far, my drumming has not suffered, but I am sure it is only a matter if time. Thank you very much for reading this, and I hope and pray I will hear from someone. Bootlegs? Jeez, they're not kidding! The King Crimson "Epitaph" bootlegs sound like HI-FI test records by comparison. At least in the KC releases, they gave an important historical insight into what the original Crimson sounded like. It's hard to believe that a band of ELP's stature and history haven't got some live tapes of a decent sonic quality in "The Manticore Vaults". The recent re-release of Trilogy, for instance, includes a bonus live recording of Hoedown that sounds pretty damn good (does anybody know where it's recorded by the way? the sleeve notes don't say anything about it) so there must be some good stuff lying around. What I'd like to see is a decent live retrospective in the same vein as KC's "The Great Deceiver". In the meantime, I'm going back to listen the PAAE and WBMFTTSTNE until something better turns up. On a different subject, RE: the recent BSS re-issue. The vocals on Jerusalem sound like a completely different take to me. What does anybody else think? The rest of the "remix" sucks though. (i.e. KE's keyboard parts too low in the mix). The result is that I upgrade my views several degrees, for the following reasons: 1: The price is incredibly cheap! I didn't even have to pay Norwegian custom charges;-)! 2: The sound is incredibly good for being so bad! Though a bit thin and somewhat noisy in parts, the audience sometimes overwhelming the music, there being no mix nor any separation, the experience of listening to these 70's audience tapes (the New Haven one is soundboard, though) is incredible. By the way these recordings are made, for the first time in my life I realise just how overwhelming an experience ELP live must have been. The way Greg's voice "thunders and resonates" from the walls in "Take a Pebble", the Stereo og Quad effects, the overpowering keyboards etc, is very much lost on "Welcome Back" and "Works live" as these do not capture the "audience acoustics" (though with all that entails). 3: The performances are incredibly energetic! Listening to the various versions of e.g. Hoedown, Toccata and Jerusalem shows how different ELP played from night to night. This is not about "improvising", its more to do with energy and speed and various other factors making the result so different from the "Welcome Back"-version, which some think is "how ELP played these songs live". The truth is that while the songs may be the same, the performances differ amazingly, even in pieces with few improvisational elements 4: The improvisations are incredibly mind blowing! Just listen to the various solos in Stones of Years, Aquatarkus (AMAZINGLY different versions!) and piano solos!!!!! And Pictures from Buffalo!!!!!! And the humour in the music!!! I was familiar with most of these boots, still, due to the fact that the sound seems a bit improved and I hadn't heard the '74 Wichita concert before, all this really proved beyond doubt to me what GREAT a group ELP was! Moral of the story: The Original Bootlegs are a MUST to all and any serious ELP fan! And keep up releasing such (drool, drool, drool...)! At the same time this has even more whetted my appetite for High Fi Sounding Performances, well mixed and separated! So get the tapes which went into making various TV-shows (Belgium 71, Tokyo 72, Manticore 73, California Jam 74 etc), not to mention the Full Newcastle City Hall March '71 Concert, and any other possibly existing on good tapes! I have the book that was published by Warner Bros. Publications in 1977 and distributed by IMP. It's absolutely great. However, I'm sure Keith has recorded a lot more of his music in writing. Do you know of any other publications with good piano scores? It's called "On Tour with Emerson Lake & Palmer". I do not know of the orchestral "Abadon's Bolero" being released on anything else of ELP's, so that cut may still be in the rarities vault. I also have a 2 disc vinyl bootleg recorded at Long Beach Arena back in 1972, from the "Trilogy" tour. I'd be interested in knowing how rare that is. I have been searching in vain lately for these photos - Any ideas? David Carswell [ Editor's Note: I remember these pictures. They were taken at a concert in Boston where they actually had to stop the show so they could put out a small fire in the Hammond that gets abused during the encore. I don't have a copy. But if someone knows where I can get them, I'll gladly put them on the ELP Digest site (assuming I can get permission). I think they were on the www.keithemerson.com site for quite a while. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: Willy Rotolo [willy_rotolo@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, September 07, 2001 7:09 PM To: digest-mailer@reluctant.com Subject: doubt dear ELP digest: I'm writing you because in the CD "live at the royal Albert hall", track n°6 from Victory Music is called "Creole Dance" but in the CD set "the return of the manticore" the same song is called "hammer it out" I'd like to know which is the real name of the song and his author. Originally it was said the would re-issue most titles and they would be remixed and some include bonus tracks. There web-site only shows Brain Salad w/bonus and said to be a different mix, Trilogy w/bonus and Welcome Back. They were put on May 21, 2001. Are the other titles out? If so which ones? How many will they do? Which are remixed in anyway? Which have bonus tracks? As a completest and long time fanatic, I collect any note that may be different. On Brain Salad you can hear a different vocal take on Benny The Bouncer. Trilogy to me sounds the same but you do get the bonus track Hoedown live. Please e-mail me directly. Any information is appreciated and even if you can refer me to someone that can give me the 100 percent facts. I see people write about titles being out and others saying no way were more than 3 released. Have a great day!! I understand Sanctuary are to release the ELP back catalogue in early 2002 as replica LP miniatures. Would they include the bonus tracks that are on the current issue of remasters? Would they include the bonus tracks that are scheduled for import releases such as Live At the Royal Albert Hall? Would all these bonus tracks be available as a separate release? This would be good if the extra tracks on the Return Of the Manticore Box set were also included. Will the replica LP miniatures include any of the new liner note books in the current set of back catalogue issues? Love the Bootleg Series, excellent release there. regards Lawrence Moseley moseleylawrence@hotmail.com --------------------------------------------- From: BSbrega@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2001 6:00 PM To: elp-digest-web@reluctant.com Subject: Hammond Settings Hi, I am a long time fan. Well...from the beginning! I am wondering whether there is any info available on specific Hammond drawbar settings used by Mr. Emerson. Or is this stuff top secret? I have a QS8, but would prefer to know the actual Hammond settings, if possible. Hello John. This might be of interest of some of the E.L.P. fans out there. I am the drummer of an E.L.P. tribute-band from Norway called "The Barbarians". We play mainly the early stuff and we try to bring the incredible music of E.L.P. back to life again. The band has the same build up as E.L.P. with Bass, Organ and Drums. As we do not have vocals, we play most the instrumental stuff and take excerpts from songs like Tarkus, Karn Evil 9, The Barbarian and the coolest parts of "Pictures". If anyone is interested in hearing some "new versions" of the good old ones, the can contact me by e-mail to get some clips. Thank You.
