First things first. Happy Birthday, Keith! It's certainly been a great year for Keith so far. Emerson Plays Emerson was released followed by the recent short tour by The Nice. Let's hope that the rest of the year and 2003 keep sees a continuation of the energy and momentum we've seen so far. Second things second. Exactly 11 years before Vol. 12 # 13, there was Vol. 1 #1. I just went back to the archives (available to all on the www.brain-salad.com site) and re-read the first ELP Digest. And guess what. That short issue touched on some familiar themes: a comment about hoping for the eventual release of the California Jam on video, people trying to track down various CDs, and people interested in rarities tapes. So, here I am 11 years later and I'm reporting to a lot more people with information from a lot more people about the Cal Jam concert, questions about new/re-release CDs, and people wondering if there will ever be tapes/CDs of the recent Nice shows. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Still, there's a lot of good information here about a 3-CD set (!!!) of remixes of ELP stuff. (Though even I am wondering what a CD full of Fanfare remixes must sound like. Hmmm...). News from another fan about a web site where you can see his photos from one of the Nice shows. More questions/answers about lyrics, etc. Enjoy! And thanks for being a part of the ELP Digest experience. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .… The only new item to report this issue is on Carl’s site, where there is news of upcoming CD releases and also a "blast from the past" picture that will bring back memories for all of us! All are welcome to join by sending an email to: the-nice-subscribe@yahoogroups.com I took over as listowner in 1999, when an earlier Nice list was scuttled by its owner - seemingly due to frustration because reunion rumors had come to naught. I'm wondering, since I'm finally reconciled to the reality that the fabled Cal Jam footage will not be commercially released until I've long been parking my teeth in a glass of water every night, if the Powers That Be have at least had the foresight to have transferred the master tape to a digital medium for preservation? Any way we could find out? I understand the "de facto" master now is a 3/4" U-Matic videocassette (the erstwhile industry broadcast standard, after open reel, during the seventies )? That tape itself is pretty old...and I'd wager there aren't too many machines left that will play one of those gems! I've just gotten my hands on the new Grand Funk "Live 1971" CD... it's awesome! The fact that their record company would've kept those old multitrack tapes for over thirty years tells me that there have to be ELP concert tapes in existence. Why the Suits are sitting on this is beyond me. Greg Lake himself alluded to the recent discovery of 16-track tapes of ELP’s Mar y Sol performance from 1972. As surprisingly good as the bootleg Long Beach recording is from that same tour...can we imagine what newly mixed multitrack tapes of that show would sound like? Any new information on the above speculation would be most welcome! --------------------------------------------- From: chris tarrant [christarrant@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 4:16 PM To: elp-digest-web@reluctant.com Subject: I Missed the Gigs Hi, Being a fan of ELP since the beginning & before that the Nice, I am a little pissed off I missed the Nice Gigs, I only found out about them about a week ago. Also lyrics question again opening verse of the first song from Memoirs of an officer etc what does greg sing anybody?? walking past the river after recent rain ?????? ancient Stones all shining ? ?????????????????????? how long before next heroes day etc Editor's Note: [ Here are the lyrics to the first part of Memoirs as they appear in one of the ELP Sheet Music books. Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman (Suite) Prologue words by Pete Sinfield music by Keith Emerson copyright 1978, 1981 Palm Beach International Recordings Ltd. Walking through the city after recent rain Heard ancient stones all shining murmur, "Where are they?" How long before next hero's day And the splendid show of drum and gun? Walking by the river one September eve, Saw questions rise in circles on that old dark stream. Where now are those who dared to dream? They would leave one jewel in England's hand. Gone to sleep, they lie in flowered graves For the visitors and guidebook saved. But come the trumpet-shattered dawn Will the spirit they shared be reborn? Comrades in arms, May they rise, fight, and shine again, Till "Who goes there?" Will be answered with "Friend" again. Once, there stood a man Alone, sword in his hand, In the face of the teeth and flame, And it was all in England's name. ] --------------------------------------------- From: Richard Banham [richard.banham@ntlworld.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 3:19 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: ELP remixes Hi I was not at the Nice shows that you reviewed and so I have not heard the new dance remix intro music that many people have referred to but the latest issue of Classic Rock magazine in the UK carries an advert for a CD of ELP remixes by "today's artists". They remind me of when I was a teen, although a little after their great popularity, still my favorite group. It happens I was also playing piano when I was that age, and I'm planning to buy a Moog Synth and try to catch up with keyboards (I'm also an electrical engineer...) I'd like to know if it is possible, in your knowledge, to come across some music scores from ELP. I mean, the tough keyboard scores, not only the lyric booklets that can be found in any music store. Another question: a part from the minimoog, is there any other synth model one can buy? I mean, a "bigger" one, or is the mini also modular. Can you help me? I mean in detail showing the different LP issues from the first Cotillion edition of the first album and through the re-issues on vinyl for the albums up to Love Beach? I am sure ELP fans remember the band for being signed by Manticore and for their brilliant international charts (how can you forget "Celebration" and "The World Became the World"?). We presently have a great collaboration with Peter Hammill for the new CD/DVD of PFM. The new recording will be presented in a live "Celebration" show - Milan on November 11th -, and a big comeback concert to London is planned for winter/spring 2003. Email me for any further information!! Thanks. All the best, Corrado Canonici World Concert Management Ltd, London (PFM management) PFM Web site: www.pfmpfm.it Management site: www.worldconcertmanagement.org PRESS RELEASE Peter Hammill writes lyrics (and sings!!) for the legendary Italian prog-rock band PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) The former Van Der Graff Generator singer Peter Hammill wrote lyrics on a bonus track – called “Sea of Memory” - for the forthcoming DVD/CD by PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) due to be released for Sony this November. The DVD/CD was recorded live on the band’s highly successful 2002 Japan tour. PFM is Italy’s most popular prog-rock band ever, attaining great international acclaim since being signed in the ‘70s by Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s record label Manticore. Their Manticore albums “The world became the world”, Photos of ghosts”, “PFM live in the USA” soared up the charts both in the UK and in the States (Billboard). The new recordings will be presented in the concert “Celebration Day” in Milan, November 11th 2002: this concert will also feature Peter Hammill singing “Sea of Memory” (the new piece) with PFM. The former PFM founding member Mauro Pagani (violin/flute/vocals) will also play with the band - for the first time after 25 years!! This year saw the band embarking on a world tour including Japan and Central America. The Japan dates sold wildly over expectations: PFM sold out every evening, and new dates had to be added. Their recent Central American dates sold out as well. Plans are developing for UK dates in the very near future - together with tours of Italy, the US and one more Japan tour in 2003. A big comeback concert in London is planned for the beginning of 2003, also featuring Peter Hammill!!
