The Carl Palmer Band really was a pleasant surprise. It was a first class performance, transmitting a lot of positive energy to the 'crowd'. 'Crowd'? Well, although De Kade - in a suburb of Amsterdam - might accomodate up to probably 500 people, the audience tonight was somewhere in between 50 and 70 spectators. After the opening - Hoedown - Carl made a nice joke of it. He walked to the front of the stage, pretending to count the audience by pointing his finger, then said: "It seems like we are having a private party tonight." Nevertheless, Palmer and his band played with tremendous power and determination and the set lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. Carl walked up to the microphone in between every piece, making a short introduction by referring to the specific ELP-album on which the piece was first recorded. So he played sort of "the best of" of every single ELP studio album that was made in the 70s. Introducing Bullfrog he asked the audience if all of us remembered that "white album" that was "not that good". Introducing Canario he imitated his pose on the Love Beach cover, inviting the audience to guess what album the next piece would be coming from. He added that Love Beach was "that worst album" that every artist is inevitably destined to make once during a career, and admitted that ELP looked "like the Bee-Gees" at that time: "lots of breast hair". Before starting Trilogy he asked us "now guess where is this coming from?", repeating that same question at the end of the piece. Introducing Toccata he remarked that Brain Salad Surgery is that once in a lifetime achievement that he is still proud of. "We did that!", Carl said. I must say that both Shaun Baxter and Dave Marks were wonderful companions of Carl. They are superb musicians on their own account. Marks e.g. did an incredibly funny and charming bass-only version of Greg's From the Beginning. The band played like a perfect match and occasionally - The Enemy God and Trilogy - they made me completely forget about the ELP original. It seems to me that Carl came full circle as a drummer: his performance tonight reminded me much more of very early ELP work with subtle and complicated acoustic drumming, rather than his back-to-basic approach during the 80s or his use of samples and synth-drums. Two major conclusions. One: I always experience a good E / L / P show as an incredible boost of energy. That was certainly the case tonight. Two: with his selection of material Carl proved to me that he was (is) just as much 33.3% of the inspiration and driving force of ELP as the other two members were (are). Perhaps - even more than we could guess. The play list was: - Hoedown - The Barbarian - The Enemy God - L.A. Nights - Shaun Baxter solo - Jazz piece (no title?) - Dave Marks solo including From the Beginning and Message in a Bottle (The Police) - Whales (?; Marks & Baxter duet) - Trilogy - Canario - Shaun Baxter full-band piece (title?) - Bullfrog - Toccata - Tarkus (Eruption & Aquatarkus) - Carmina Burana encore: - Fanfare for the Common Man (incl. Carl Palmer solo) Best regards - Nick Welman Sustainable Tourism: http://www.duurzaamtoerisme.nl Darius III Tribute: http://www.gaugamela.com --------------------------------------------- From: fam erkens [erkens.j@wolmail.nl] Sent: Saturday, November 23, 2002 6:43 AM To: ELP-DIGEST@RELUCTANT.COM Subject: carl palmer concert Hello, As agreed a short message about Carl Palmer's concert yesterday, friday evening (22-11-2002) in the Boerderij Zoetermeer The Nethelands. With my 2 cards bought in May (as you know the concert has been cancelled) and a new card for my daughter there were 500 ELP fans especially coming for Carl Palmer. I read in our most important newspaper. Carl Palmer one of the most important drummers in the last 30 years. The concert began at 21.00 o'clock and takes till 22.45 . After that about 15 minutes Fanfare of the common man with of course Carl Palmer's solo. So 2 hours. From the beginning you saw Carl likes it. After each number he is telling a short story and sometimes a joke. It seems he is still 20. With lead guitar player Shaun Baxter and bass guitar player Dave Marks. The music was rather hard. I missed a keyboard player and of course Greg Lake's voice. Some numbers: The Enemy God, Toccata, The Barbarian, Bullfrog and Canario. I wanted to take a brief moment to let you know about a problem that I've been having this fall (and going into the winter). Since the end of summer, I have noticed that some purveyors of spam (unwanted email on the internet) have sunk to occasionally spoofing an email address at reluctant.com as the return address. Over the past months, I've received spam rejection notices showing me that some people are faking email (everything from unsolicited sales to detestable porn) such that, to the unsuspecting eye, it looks like it has been sent from reluctant.com. I have been working with the company with whom I have registered the reluctant.com domain to insure that they (and the internet powers) know that this mail is not really sent by me or any authorized user of the reluctant.com domain. (This is pretty easy to tell for the trained email sleuth since the 'real' IP address from which the spam is sent is NOT an IP address that is associated with reluctant.com.) Anyway, the point of this note is to reassure you of a few things: * Neither I nor anyone who is authorized to use the reluctant.com domain or the brain-salad.com domain names has or ever will send spam. I have a 10+ year history of sending the ELP Digest only to people who have specifically asked to be added to the list. This policy will never change. * No one other than me and a few well-chosen friends who help run the ELP Digest 'behind the scenes' has ever had access to the ELP Digest mailing list and it will never be used for spam or other non-ELP Digest-related use. * No spam has ever been sent nor ever will be sent from the reluctant.com or brain-salad.com domains. I dislike spam as much as you do. (And with as many email accounts as I have, I average 1,000 spam emails every 30 days!) Thanks for listening. I just wanted to know that I care about this and am doing what I can to stop it. I also want to return the favour with my interpretation of some of the lyrics to Five Bridges which i think you was after recently. ''five bridges cross the Tyne and the city sits close by, some go north and some go south but each one seems to cry'' (the next line sounds something like) ''theres no good complaining about dirty anchors (it sounds to me like he says ''complaining'' really quickly) ( 0r ) ''theres no good coming but for dirty anchors'' theres nothing much left to breathe, and its a no good job from 9 - 5 if you do not want to leave you do not want to leave, well then you make yourself believe,\ that you got something up your sleeve won't you take a walk with me, down to the *************? quay'' ? ????? ''take me down to Northumberland Street, where Northumberland people test their feet on the pavement on a crowded afternoon, and no wants to change that, but i bet they do quite soon take me to the new town hall, with the light show on the wall all crimson, cream and blue, has your mother ever noticed, perhaps she will quite soon take me to st james park, where st james people park their feet, on a saturday, united there they stand, now everybody ''sits there'' ??? with a bottle in their hands. take me down to grey street where no grey people ever meet on grey street it's all too very calm ?? (i think) i don't suppose you've been there that don't change the ????? (Brian goes off into a whisper which is nigh impossible to decipher) it then returns back to the five bridges cross the tyne etc'' a small piece of additional information i believe St James is the home of Newcastle United and so in that verse he singing about Saturday afternoon on the football terraces. i also think that ''united there they stand'' is a clever play on the Newcastle second name ''United''. Hope this helps. also Antonio Abraham was asking in the last issue about synths. i do not know if you can easily get old of an original mini-moog which are much sought after or for that matter a modular system. i believe moog have just released a new moog synth. if however like me your just fascinated and in awe of some the beasts like keiths modular system then go to www.synthmuseum.com which has loads of pictures of modular moogs. i also attach some pictures that i saved off the site. There are also a couple of keith pictures. i'm a singer songwriter/ guitarist and i can play a little keyboard more for effect but i have never been able to get over wanting to be able to play like keith or just to be able to play on one the modular systems. i have an old 70's korg synth and that makes amazing sounds so just to have a crack on the beast would be well fantastic. i don't play or write professionally though i did have a band in the nineties and we used to play my songs at venues in london, anyway i digress somewhat. Finally it was interesting to read the reviews on the nice gigs, i couldn't get to the gigs and i'm half and half as to whether i would have wanted to, considering some of the reviews on the keith section. don't get me wrong i'd love to see the Nice and yes keith could include some elp material but what about including five bridges, or some of it, if the orchestral bit is too much for keith on the synths. (he managed with Pirates) i've just recieved the ''live at the albert hall'' video ( i went to one of the nights there - in fact the one and only time i've ever seen them i was only 15 when they split up around 78 and had to wait until 92). i also watched my Works Montreal video which i received recently and which graeat to see. i have to agree with an earlier comment about the quality but then again it looks like it was TV recording and not recorded for ELP's use, for future release as was obviously the Albert hall video. one thing puzzles me though and that is that being such a fan of keiths i want to how he plays certain pieces and when it gets to those bits the camera is either at hand height or it goes on to greg or carl so you can't see it. i also recently updated my cd collection to include Love Beach which i had not heard for a long while and Emerson plays Emerson which i am slowly working my way through - it's alot of piano to take in all at once. cheers for now phil kelly --------------------------------------------- From: Geoff Goostrey [geoff.goostrey@barclays.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2002 1:27 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Turn Up The Volume 2 & Giger Whilst browsing in HMV on Oxford Street I jokingly picked up a DVD with a picture of a naked women on the front and said to my girlfriend - 'I think I'll buy this one'. I was about to put it back, but turned it over first, to read the letters ELP! Looking at it closer it turned out to be a compilation DVD called 'Turn Up The Volume 2' and included a track called, 'ELP - Peace on Earth'. Lot's of other heavy bands on this DVD including Anthrax, Kiss and Skid Row etc. see the Amazon link below - although it doesn't say much - but it shows the cover. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005A3NO/ref=sr_aps_dvd_1_1/026-9955382-0879656 Naturally I did buy it! It includes a textual discography and a filmed interview with all three, made in 1993 where the band say they will tour in June next year ('94). It also includes a short piece of live footage of the band recording I believe in Father Christmas (I guess that's where the title of 'Peace on Earth' comes from) and a very short excerpt of Lucky Man from a Live performance of the time (1993), also. There isn't much more which is a great shame, but I guess we're used to that! Also I notice that someone is auctioning off a series of Giger BSS posters on Amazon. Search all products for ELP and Giger. I just bid the starting price of £3.99 and, as the only bidder won. There are at least three more waiting to be auctioned. I think that you'd be well advised to stay away from the MemoryMoog. It was released long after Bob was done with Moog Music, and it had a very poor reliability rating. There were numerous problems, all reportedly fixed in the MemoryMoog Plus, but that was plagued with its own set of problems. If you're looking for a synth that can really capture the essence of the Moog sound, and a whole host of others, I'd strongly recommend anything in the Kurzweil K2x00 line. Probably the deepest synthesizer ever made, in terms of programmability, and the sound is stunning. There's a gazillion free programs available on the web for them also. For what you would pay for an 18 year-old MemoryMoog, you could easily get a K2500, which is only 1 iteration old. To get an idea of how incredible they sound (and I've owned everything from my first Arp 2600, through a Prophet-10, to a K200VPR that is now part of my rack) listen to Pink Floyd's PULSE album. EVERY synth on that tour was a K2000, and they used 4 of them. You can hear some very distinctively Moog-ish sounds, and all the other stuff is amazing as well. ..Joe --------------------------------------------- From: Julian Chancellor [chancellor@jazzfree.com] Sent: Friday, November 22, 2002 2:11 PM To: John Arnold, ELP Digest Subject: A good year For me this has been a good year for acquisition of ELP or E solo recordings, thanks in part to Sanctuary Records and in part to Amazon.co.uk. I have bought Emerson Plays Emerson (easily the highlight of the year, and for me on a level with the early ELP albums), Inferno, Live at the Isle of Wight, Live in Poland and the Bootlegs Vol.3. Apart from the first one, there is nothing new for the real ELP professionals, but for those of us who have never even seen an ELP bootleg before, we must count ourselves fortunate. Live in Poland is for me more interesting than the Now part of Then and Now, including as it does an interesting version of (part of) Tarkus with a piano based Stones of Years, a precursor perhaps to the jazz piano Tarkus played by Keith on the Live at the Stables Radio show earlier this year. I would like to put in a good word for the Bootlegs Vol 3. While I agree with earlier correspondents that the first CD is a waste of everybody's time, being a mish-mash of previously officially released material, the two Albert Hall CDs are very worthwhile. They are more complete than either the official album or the video. And, as recently pointed out in the digest by Nigel Geden, the Wiltern Theatre show is breathtaking. The recording quality is really good (a completely different story to the earlier bootlegs for obvious reasons), the playing is first class and the atmosphere electric. It's not expensive for what you get. Any doubters should buy it. Now all I need is Changing States / Cream of Emerson Soup (Amazon let me down here), and (yet another plea) any sheet music except the black books. Can anyone help? Please?? Thanks again for the excellent Digest which I always look forward to and enjoy. JUST A FEW WORDS FROM LONDON ENGLAND ON A COLD AND WET NIGHT IN THE EARLY HOURS OF 1ST DECEMBER 2002, IT NOW OVER 2 MONTHS SINCE THE 4 LIVE NICE CONCERTS IN OCTOBER. I WAS LUCKY TO SEE 2 OF THE SHOWS, NEWCASTLE AND LONDON. AFTER TALKING TO LEE JACKSON AT THE BACKSTAGE DOOR IN NEWCASTLE AND THE HELTER SKELTER BOOK SHOP IN LONDON IT LOOKS LIKELY THAT THIS SHOW WILL HIT THE ROAD ONCE AGAIN NEXT YEAR. LEE GAVE UP HIS DAY JOB IN ENGLAND TO GO ON THE SHORT TOUR. AND HIS NEW LADY IN HIS LIFE WHO CAME DOWN TO LONDON FOR THE BOOK SIGNING IS HAPPY FOR HIM. AFTER HANDING LEE A FEW PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE TOUR INCLUDING ONE WITH 2 GUYS FROM HIS FIRST SKIFFLE BAND HE SMILED AND HANDED THE PICTURES TO HIS GOOD LADY FOR SAFE KEEPING. I THEN GAVE HIM A 26 PAGE COPY OF THE NICE CONCERT REVIEWS FROM THE DIGEST VOL. 12 NO 11. AT FIRST, HE HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THE ELP DIGEST OR ITS CONTENTS. I TOLD HIM TO SIGN UP. BUT, LEE DOESN'T HAVE A COMPUTER. SO, IF ANY ONE KNOWS HIS HOME ADDRESS PLEASE SEND HIM UPDATE ISSUES! I ALSO ASKED HIM ABOUT A LIVE VIDEO FILMING OF THE TOUR. BUT, HE TOLD ME THIS WAS DROPPED BECAUSE THE FILM COMPANY WANTED TOTAL CONTROL OF THE VIDEO AND MUSIC SOUNDTRACK. SO, INSTEAD ALL 4 SHOWS WHERE RECORDED ON AUDIO TAPE BY THE BAND AND THESE TAPES WILL BE USED FOR A LIVE CD LATER ON NEXT YEAR. WHILE AT THE BOOK SHOP SIGNING A GERMAN HIPPY GUY ASKED ME WHY THE NICE AT THE BBC SESSION CD IS MISSING (THE SECOND RECORDING FROM THE 28/JAN/68) I TOLD HIM THAT THIS TAPE IS MISSING AND IS LOST FOR EVER BUT GUESS WHAT OUT OF HIS POCKET HE PRODUCED A 34 YEAR OLD CASSETTE TAPE WITH INTROS BY LEE JACKSON AND JOHN PEEL. TRACKS: DADDY WHERE DID I COME FROM / FOR NO ONE / LA ARESA DIA CONTE / THE CRY OF EUGENE BUT MISSING SHE BELONG TO ME. I ASKED THE GUY IF HE HAD ANY EXTRA COPIES AND FROM HIS OTHER POCKET HE SAID YES SO I EXCHANGED IT FOR A 'NICE" CONCERT PROGRAMME FROM THE CURRENT TOUR FOR IT AND GOT A GEM OF AN ITEM. A WEEK LATER AT A HOTEL BAR IN LONDON AFTER JOHN ENTWISTLE'S MEMORIAL SERVICE, I WAS SPEAKING TO BILLY NICHOLLS (SEE PAGE 49 THE NICE BOOK). HE SAID THAT HIS VOCALS WHERE NEVER CREDITED ON THE FIRST NICE ALBUM. SO I TOLD HIM ABOUT THE BOOK AND IS NOW HAPPY TO BE CREDITED FOR HIS HARD WORK. However, if Carl and Keith are up to reuniting, maybe they should give some thought to it. There are people out there that'd be interested in their musical dynamism. Maybe there could be new sidemen or a new singer? Of course, the name of the band would be in debate...maybe just go with "Emerson + Palmer?" However....no matter how you cut it, I think that "On My Way Home," and "Desde La Vida" from the 3 album in 1987, shows that Keith and Carl can generate some memorable moments on their own. During a scene in which a psychopathic young kidnapper/rapist is shown in the cellar of his home "preparing" his 16 year old female victim, the somewhat regularly utilized, "Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression, Part 2" was playing, interestingly in the form of a 33 1/3 LP being played on an old self-contained phonograph. In a later scene, where the rapist has left the victim alone in the cellar during which time she is able to free herself by tearing the duct tape binding on a protruding nail, "Stones of Years" from "Tarkus" is being played on the same old phonograph. The ELP featured music ends shortly after the start of "Iconoclast" when the victim, while attempting her escape, accidentally kicks a can of paint off a shelf and on to the phonograph interrupting "Iconoclast" and alerting the kidnapper to her escape attempt. I'm not sure I've ever heard anything from "Tarkus" used on network TV before. At any rate, if the show's music editor reads the ELP Digest he/she may wish to identify himself/herself so as to receive the combined accolades of the ELP faithful. It's nearly Christmas so I thought I'd peruse the ELP Digest for ideas to 'hint' for presents - it worked last year and for my birthday. And I read: 'With regards to the Moog synth, I have what I find makes a pretty good equivalent, in my Roland Jupiter 6 ' 'Harumph, Harumph,' I thought - that'll never do: Well, we all want to sound like Emo - and I'm sure we'd all bargain away all non-functional body parts for his modular Moog and a tenth of his keyboard ability. It ain't going to happen but in the spirit of self indulgence, I thought I'd offer a few ideas for fellow Bedroom Warriors. There are a plethora of cheap and cheerful multi timbral General MIDI modules and they can generally be picked up for next to nothing on eBay - My favourite is the Korg 05RW because as well as doing all of the guitars, drums, pads and assorted symphonic lovelies, it's possible to dump a complete set of Organ patches that offer everything from a hammond to a Farfisa to a Vox Continental to a dozen church and cathedral organs. So, with two of these beasts hooked up to an old AppleMac, and a delve on to the internet for some of those delicious ELP MIDI files, it's possible to do a half decent playalong ELP live from the Royal City Hall, My Bedroom. (Sorry, Emo, I know it's your copyright but it's such a temptation...) Not expensive - £50 each for the two modules, £35 for an old Mac LC475, a tenner for a second hand MIDI interface and a lump of shareware/freeware sequencer. Now, all of the above sounds pretty darned good and if you can get hold of a mike, a bit of reverb and some smoky tonsils but, if you want caviar and not lumpfish roe, here's the icing to put on the cake. I read somewhere that despite all of the hype, most of Emo's favourite patches from the modular could be replicated on a Minimoog. So I tried it. And they can. So, in the spirit of pure research, I worked out what else needed to be done to the Minimoog and paid Tony Allgood (The absolute undisputed synth doctor in the UK) to do the following: Take one Minimoog - preferably a late one with the stable oscillators. Add an extra LFO, put a couple of switches on it for oscillator sync and sync sweep. Finally put a first envelope inverter switch on it. And it sounded like pure audio syrup coming out of the speakers - yum-yum Now, here's the clever bit. Plug one end of a Kenton Electronics Pro Solo MIDI box into the S Trig and CV inputs of the Minimoog and the other end into either a MIDI keyboard or the output of your MIDI sequencer. The result is bloody mind blowing - I thought that singing along to my old favourites on played a couple of 05R/Ws was stunning but imagine hooking in a Minimoog and being able to mess about with the patches in real time. (and when you can't play them with Emersonesque speed or accuracy, being able to let the computer do it for you while you twiddle the knobs) I lost half a week just playing with it. And the other half grinning like a silly idiot Now, before everyone leaps up and down and screams that there aren't enough Minimoogs to go round: It works with any old analogue monosynth with CV and gate or trig or S trig. There are still quite a few MS20s about and they will do quite a lot (although alas through a 12Db/Oct filter...bah) And old analogue monosynths are always coming up on eBay ... Go, on. Pete Sinfield's web site, http://www.songsouponsea.com, has the lyrics to many ELP songs. My question is how much, if any, of these lyrics were written by Greg Lake? "Pirates," for example, appears on Pete's web page without any attribution to Greg. I didn't check them all but this leaves the impression he wrote them alone. I thought the lyrics in ELP tunes were a collaboration between Lake/Sinfield. From what I can gather, there are three versions of the song. Two of them I have, that on Works Volume 1, and that on the Manticore boxed set. I am looking for the version that is accompanied by a symphony and a tremendous choir. Would you know where I can get this, or who I can contact to get it? Thank you very much for your time. Hi folks, Can someone definitively tell me if there is a difference between these two items? Re-Works: Brain Salad Perjury [BOX SET] http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000793WO/ref=pd_sim_pm_dp/202-0106143-5811015 Re-Works [BOX SET] http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006NSOF/ref=pd_sim_pm_dp/202-0106143-5811015 I'm confused because I saw the latter item, released on Burning Airlines records in Paris a few days ago. It was in a box, and did NOT look like the first item. I didn't buy it because I have the other one on order already. I am curious to know if anyone ever got the ELPowell CD version I have, with the bonus tracks in the back cover and in the CD seal, BUT NOT IN THE CD!!!!! A fraud! I bought that CD in 1992, I guess. Some years after I was in a store and I felt like testing, God knows why, another CD apparently like mine, and amazingly that one had the tracks "The Loco-motion" and "Vacant Possession", not only in the paper, but also in sound:):) Of course, I bought it with a big smile. At home I compared the two CDs. They were both printed in USA, and there were NO VISUAL DIFFERENCES between them. Same catalog codes, same dates, same inner details, same CD seal, both promising the bonus tracks. Well, there was only a visual difference, the CD without the bonus tracks, though it had their names in its seal, it had a physical silver aspect toward the center of the disc. The CD with the tracks had a transparent aspect in the equivalent place. I don't think the first CD had any malfunction. Hence, anyone ever experienced such thing or knows why is that? for the memory of Cozy Powell, a hell of a drumer which made with Emerson and Lake a hell of a record, just unforgettable Long live ELP: forget the differences and reunite. Music is stronger that way. And we'll be happier. I have not seen it since. I am trying to learn Eruption. Could anyone who still has the Tarkus book share just the Eruption sheet music with me. I have the Black Book and would gladly trade a tune. I don't think this is necessarily piracy since I can't buy the darn books anywhere anyway. If someone could help out I would really appreciate it.
