Since Issue 1 this year was out late, I'm trying to make amends by getting Issue 2 out early. News this time has emerged about the Minimoog that is/was being sold on eBay, another Palmer band venue, some news about the www.brain-salad.com web site, tribute bands, etc. Enjoy! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... As you may recall, the last ELP Digest reported on a Minimoog offered on eBay that may have belonged to Keith Emerson. Well, an informed source tells me that he doubts that the Minimoog pictured ever belonged to Keith. Shortly after that Digest was published, I got a call to tell me a little about what people may think that Minimoog is. Here's what I heard: The Minimoog pictured looks similar to the 'split' Minimoogs that were used back in the Brain Salad Surgery tour days. Back then, there were 2 Minimoogs where the keyboards were disconnected from the top panel and the keyboards were placed in drawers in a shroud that went over the larger keyboards (the modular Moog, I think). I have been assured that the Minimoog offered on eBay is not one of those since they are both accounted for. Furthermore, it appears that the serial number mentioned is from the late 70s - well after those 2 Minimoogs were used. I was also told that Keith never owned a Minimoog from that era (presumably since he already had some from the early 70s). So, based on what I've heard, it appears that the Minimoog on eBay never did belong to Keith Emerson. Hope this helps clarify the situation. - John - --------------------------------------------- From: Ford, Jeanette (SOCIAL & HOUSING SERVICES) [Jeanette.Ford@plymouth.gov.uk] Sent: Wednesday, February 26, 2003 10:15 AM To: 'elp-digest@reluctant.com' Subject: Carl Palmer Band Hi John Just a quick note to let you and the Digest all know that The Carl Palmer Band will be appearing at Powderham Castle in Exeter on 2 August 2003. This is an all day/night time gig, and the guy at the box office just happened to be an ELP fan. He enthuses that the Carl Palmer Band are a three-piece in the same format as ELP, and when he saw them recently they were brilliant. On his recommendation, I have decided to go along to see for myself.................. will send in a review if I can. Anyone else in the Exeter area, try to come along - should be well worth it! Best wishes Jeanette [ Editor's Note: According to the poster about this concert that can be seen at the carlpalmer.com web site, http://www.carlpalmer.com/statquo.html, you will notice that Status Quo is the headlining act. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: John Arnold [arnold@reluctant.com] Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 3:31 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Important notice re: www.brain-salad.com Hi. The cost of maintaining the ELP Digest and web site (http://www.brain-salad.com) has gone up dramatically over the years. Believe it or not, I have always run the ELP Digest out of my own pocket. Since I moved the web site from the free squatting at UCal Berkeley (when the machine it was on was being phased out), I have spent almost $1,000US of my own money to host the web site commercially. Now, please don't misunderstand. I am neither begging for assistance nor asking sympathy (this is what and where I want to be) but... Recently, the cost of hosting the brain-salad.com web site has gone up to the point where I'm going to move the site to a new hosting company. So, I just want to warn you that - over the next month or so - I intend to cancel my account at its current hosting company and move to another, cheaper alternative. So, if during this time, you can't seem to find www.brain-salad.com - please be patient. The ELP Digest and the web site will go on. But there may be a few days when the network tables can't seem to find it. Worst case, send me mail and ask what's going on. I've said for many many years that ELP was the best group ever (at least in my opinion). But I've sadly come to realize that they will probably never reunite. I believe Keith is probably still writing - but the chemistry is not there to urge him on. Carl is out trying to make a living. Greg went the way of most prima-donna singers - thinking he is too good for music. Every time I hear his statement that "a record is like a bank note - a promise to pay later" I have to laugh. He wants to spread his philosophy - but all we want is the music. And what great music it was. I still listen to BSS several times a week. I never grow tired of it. But sadly, the great days of Super Groups are over. I'm now stuck with the Caucasian Rap (CRap) my kids listen to. Recently, a friend and ELP Digest reader reminded me of Jordan Rudess (of Dream Theater) as a progressive rock keyboard player that's done some interesting work. This led me to update the 'Bands Influenced by ELP' page on the brain-salad.com site to include some of this information. For those looking for a more complete tie to ELP, Jordan appeared on the 'Steinway to Heaven' album (released on Magna Carta) which also featured appearances by Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, and Patrick Moraz. Anyway... while digging up the most recent links to Dream Theater, Jordan, etc. I found the following news item about a free concert by the Rudess Morgenstein Project in Boston on April 2: URL: http://www.dreamtheater.net/newsjr.htm "Free Rudess Morgenstein Project show Added on 02-27-2003 The Rudess Morgenstein Project will be appearing at the Berklee School of music's David Friend Recital Hall on Wednesday, April 2nd, at 7 PM.
