Here in the Northeast US (but more north and more east than last week's blackout), the summer vacation season is almost ending and things are starting to crank up for the annual race to the new year. As you'll see, I've been busy and should be busy this fall. A number of Digest readers have also been busy reading the newly released 'Pictures of an Exhibitionist' (Keith's long-awaited autobiography). I'm hoping to get a copy soon and I've also been enthralled reading Martyn Hanson's book about The Nice (Hang On To A Dream). So, I'll try to write a review of each once I've read them all. (So far, I can tell you that I'm really enjoying Martyn's book because it's such a rich story of all the members of The Nice. Though I think I know a lot about ELP, I didn't really know much of the story behind the story of The Nice and hearing it told from the points of view of everyone from Lee, Brian, and David to the behind the scenes stories from roadie/assistant/you name it Bazz Ward is just mesmerising. Carl's got info about a new contest and some new drum clinics posted on his site. And, of course, the Digest readers chime in a review of a Carl Palmer drum clinic, questions, comments, and answers about videos, whether Keith's sons may be in the music business, and another tribute band makes itself known. And, of course, there's the vitriol we haven't heard in a while since some music magazine has thought it necessary to list their idea of the worst artists in music history. (For those of us who read The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, and other similar magazines in the mid to late 70s, one of their 'top picks' will come as no surprise to us.) Read on and enjoy! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... As you will read below, Keith's autobiography Pictures of an Exhibitionist is finally available on his Web site - the link is http://www.keithemerson.com/autobio.html - and be sure to read on for more information about the site! Greg's Web site is also attracting attention - there's news posted at http://greglake.com/newsite/html/awards.htm about an award the site has won. Other news is posted at http://greglake.com/newsite/index.asp Carl's site has extended the "Working Live" contest until September 1 - read about it at http://www.carlpalmer.com/snare.html Plus, there are tour date and drum clinic additions at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html Enjoy! ========================= Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: John Arnold Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2003 11:25 AM To: elp-digest Subject: News about the keithemerson.com web site... As I mentioned in the last ELP Digest, there was a brief 'outage' (no relation to last week's blackout in parts of the US) of the keithemerson.com site over the weekend. This was caused by the move of keithemerson.com from one hosting location to another. Now that the move has been completed, I want to let you in on some additional information about the site move... After a few moments of serendipity over the last month, I want you to know that I'm going to be administering the keithemerson.com web site and helping Keith get his online store back online! As a long-time ELP fan, I'm sure you can understand how exciting this is for me to be helping link Keith with his fans. I am planning to use this opportunity to get more frequent updates onto the web site and to make sure that all of the fans know what's going on with Keith's various projects. So, if you've felt less than satisfied with the information that's been on Keith's web site over the past year, please give it another chance. It will still take a little more time to get our "system" in place for regular updates, etc. But we ARE working on it and Keith DOES care about making sure his fans know what's going on. One of the reasons he's letting me work with the site is because he knows that I care about these things and that I'll help get things back on track. One of the first things I will be doing over the coming weeks is adding a contact point for keithemerson.com (In the past, I've received a number of emails from people asking how to contact the site with questions about it. So I know this is one area that needs to be addressed.) I'm still working on the details of what that email address will be. Since I'm trying to handle my ELP Digest 'work' separately from my 'keithemerson.com' work, I'd request that you do the same. If you have a question or suggestion for the keithemerson.com site, please use the contact point that will be listed on that web site. ELP Digest stuff can continue to come to me at the various addresses found on www.brain-salad.com. Perhaps more importantly, I want to assure you that, despite this new involvement, the ELP Digest will remain unchanged. It will continue to provide a way for fans to get know what's going on and share your views with other fans. The ELP Digest will remain free. It will continue to provide unbiased news, information, and discussion about Keith, Greg, and Carl. I truly believe that this opportunity will improve both the keithemerson.com web site AND the ELP Digest. So, I hope you'll continue to place your trust in me and to support the ELP Digest. Thanks to everyone who has helped and continues to help. I really appreciate it. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. - John - Here's the announcement that will be put on the keithemerson.com site in the next few days: The official Keith Emerson web site, keithemerson.com, is under new management. The new arrangement between Keith and Linkage Systems Corporation will allow the site to provide regular updates to Keith's Activities, including official news about the newly released autobiography ('Pictures of an Exhibitionist'), tour dates, etc. Soon, the online Keith Emerson store will also come back to life, giving fans a trusted source of hard-to-find products and the occasional one-of-a-kind collectibles from Keith's personal collection. For Emerson/ELP fans, this means that keithemerson.com will once again become THE source for official news about Keith's work. The rejuvenated web site will include regular updates with "news from Keith" and other features that are in the planning stages. Though the Linkage Systems name may be new to Emerson fans, its connection to Emerson and ELP is not. Linkage Systems is a software company founded by John Arnold, a co-founder of the ELP Digest in 1991. The ELP Digest was the Internet's first ELP email newsletter and provided the Internet's first ELP web site (now located at www.brain-salad.com). The ELP Digest is and will remain a free, independent, fan-based vehicle for fans of ELP (the band and the individual members) to share their enthusiasm and enjoyment of the music of Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer. John and his company are mixing business with pleasure as they work directly with Keith to re-instill fan confidence and interest in the keithemerson.com web site and to link Keith with his fans. Thanks to everyone who has helped with the transition of the site to its new home and special thanks to the fans for their patience and continued support. Please visit the keithemerson.com site soon and let us know how to make it a better Internet destination for fans around the world! --------------------------------------------- From: Eriko Yatabe-Waldock Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 10:37 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Keith's autobiography John I received Keith's autobiography yesterday and finished it at 4am! Not much about ELP itself, but it is about Keith Emerson's life so far, and that is what I wanted to read. It is very honest and very true to his feeling. I could understand very well that his mother was not happy about certain places. Yes, it is a bit shocking - it is like finding out that your very idol goes to bathroom!! It is funny and entertaining, and makes you think about your own life - you do not now what is waiting around the corner. His relationship with his parents throughout the book is much more educating than purchasing one of those books by so-called counselors and phychologists. Eriko Yatabe-Waldock --------------------------------------------- From: Eriko Yatabe-Waldock Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2003 2:20 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Keith's autobiography I just want to add something to my previous post on Keith's book. I said that there was not much about ELP, but there are many pages attributed to ELP and the Nice! In his ever active and interesting life, it is that they are just two stages of his life (although very significant!). And I found it more interesting to read about his childhood and his relationship with his parents throughout the book. Maybe most ELP fans knew all these things in the book? But as I was just a 4th grader when Keith was doing something naughty in Japan (well everywhere should I say), it sure was shocking and yet entertaining! Eriko Yatabe-Waldock --------------------------------------------- From: John Hughes Sent: Thursday, August 07, 2003 3:22 AM To: ELP-digest Subject: Re: Pictures of an exhibitionist This isn't so much of a review, but to let you know that the book is now out. I picked up a copy at Helter Skelter yesterday. I was personally disappointed that it didn't touch on ELP activity post 1978 except for a one page summary which mentions Keith's solo work in 4 lines! While no reader is ever going to be satisfied with a biography, I thought this was either a hint that we'll get a second volume about post 1978 work, or - despite his solo work as a film scorer, the ventures with ELPowell and 3, the "reformation" of the Nice, the tours in the '90's with ELP, he isn't interested in these matters, or he simply can't talk about them for legal matters. Greg doesn't come out of it too well - IMO - and the hedonistic excesses (drugs, girls and general rock star pranks) get generous coverage. Despite all that, it was a damn interesting read and I'm sure most listers will enjoy it too. Cheers, John --------------------------------------------- From: Tom Ace Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 1:55 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Emerson's autobiography I read Keith Emerson's _Pictures of an Exhibitionist_ this weekend. I can't say just how accurate all the accounts are (I wasn't there), but I get the impression Emerson was trying to tell the story as it was. For this, I give him a lot of credit. As he says in the foreword, it's "sometimes too caustic and too graphic", but life can be like that. Emerson is uninhibited about sharing his opinions of bandmates, other musicians, critics, and so on. I liked the discussions of the music itself, the accounts of how various songs originated--I wouldn't have minded if even more of the book had been devoted to the music. He could have used a good editor. The writing style is bombastic at times (imagine that). And it's painful to see names of composers and works misspelled, it's sort of like hearing wrong notes played. But that's all secondary, it's nice that he wrote the book at all. In the foreword, Emerson says he hopes the story isn't over and that he looks forward "to furthering an active life in music." I liked reading that. I didn't find a US source for the book (as I write this, Amazon still says it's not released). I ordered it from the publisher in London, they take orders on the web at www.blake.co.uk . Last Sunday I went to see Carl Palmer give a two-hour lesson on what is possible on a drumkit at the Purcell Room at the South Bank Centre in London. He demonstrated, and discussed with the 300-plus audience, snare drum techniques, finger control, double bass drum, various rudiments, grooves (yes, grooves - even if most of the music he is known for doesn't 'groove' in the conventional sense, doesn't mean he can't do it), cymbal playing, backsticking etc etc - he was witty, informative, and above all entertaining. He talked about his influences, ranging from Krupa and Rich to a Scottish pipe drummer called Jim Kilpatrick, about practising, about the operations he had on each hand for carpal tunnel syndrome, and of course about ELP. He is leading a drive to issue a DVD set along similar lines to the recent Zep release, with lots of previously unseen footage - can't wait! I took my 8 year old godson (there were an encouraging number of young people in the audience, including - shock horror - girls) who didn't know Palmer from Joe Schmo, and he loved it - he's started learning to play drums at school and now he knows just what can be done. It was great to see a guy who has earned enormous rewards from music (if not the respect from critics but he doesn't seem to give a damn about that, quite rightly) putting something back as an educator, and very obviously having a great time doing it. Earlier that day he'd also given 30 people a group masterclass. Of course he gets paid, and is sponsored by Paiste, but he doesn't have to do it. I know a number of other musicians do this kind of thing, too. As a very average occasional drummer it was eye-opening, despite having seen and heard him play many times (most recently with his current band). Anyone else had the good luck to catch a Palmer clinic? What did you think? Keep up the good work with the Digest! Best regards Tony Wawryk =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: dbento Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 2:10 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Greg Lake's singing on "Manoeuvres" album Greetings to all, Recently I've heard again (after so many years) Greg Lake's "Manoeuvres" album and I've found very good moments in it. I was surprised to notice in "It's You, You've Gotta Believe" some keyboard lines that reminded me Keith Emerson's own ones. Perhaps we ought to think that a great artist can't play for so many years with another great one without an everlasting exchange. Anyway, I was really amazed with Greg's singing on "Haunted". I've always heard that he was a baritone (here and there tenor was mentioned), but he sings a real low D note about 1 minute and 12 seconds after the beginning of "Haunted". If that is as low as I think (the lowest D for the human voice), then I wonder if in fact he's rather a bass singer with very good high notes than a baritone (or tenor). We must remember that later his voice got even lower. If someone into male's voice classification (acquainted with its very tricky frontier cases) could give us a word, I'd be really happy to hear. I am almost sure that near ELP's final break Keith said somewhere something like "Greg has a beautiful voice and he can sing whatever he wants". I suppose he was quite fair and right. Hope to see them shaking the Earth together again, with earthquake Carl. Take care you all! This was sent to your2cents@blender.com: "12th Worst Article in Music History? Thanks again for another issue of Blender, filled with wit and wonderfull stories! And it really shook the belly button to see your extended concept article on "The 50 Worst Artists in Music History". Parts of it, however, may deserve a nomination for "The 50 Worst Articles in Music History". While I really appreciate that Emerson, Lake and Palmer are mentioned (they rarely are, these days), I think one twenty five or more years post punk perhaps should avoid to perpetuate the old prog and prejudice position? Still, this may mean that people again start listening to ELP-music, and others who dare do the difficult and unexpected. If for nothing else, one may then solidarise oneself with Kenny G. Wee's sufferings in listening to something as bad (per definition of course) as a "prog-rock concept album". Take care, however, so you don't commit the unforgiveable sin of enjoying ELP's music. So I ordered it, and when it arrived, in a spiffing little card box, it turned out to be the Reworks triple cd set repackaged. Brain Salad perjury is on the invisible hands music label catalogue number ihcd 23. cheers, John [ Editor's Note: For further clarification, I have the 3-CD set called Re-works and my copy is copyright nmc music but the packaging is listed as catalog number Pilot145. It may be an acquired taste but I like it. I know there are people who love to listen for classical/etc. quotes that Keith throws in. Well, I don't know enough classical music to be good at that. But I love trying to figure out where the samples used in these tracks come from. The music is very interesting to me and trying to figure out how they did it and where the samples/loops come from is very entertaining. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: Eriko Yatabe-Waldock Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 11:03 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Hermagedon DVD Hi John from the now lighted New York (we were one of the luckiest ones that regained the power after 4 hours)!
